The chiral condensate in neutron matter

We calculate the chiral condensate in neutron matter at zero temperature based on nuclear forces derived within chiral effective field theory. Two-, three- and four-nucleon interactions are included consistently to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) of the chiral expansion. We find that the interaction contributions lead to a modest increase of the condensate, thus impeding the restoration of chiral symmetry in dense matter and making a chiral phase transition in neutron-rich matter unlikely for densities that are not significantly higher than nuclear saturation density.

Quark mass dependence of the X(3872) binding energy

We explore the quark-mass dependence of the pole position of the X(3872) state within the molecular picture. The calculations are performed within the framework of a nonrelativistic Faddeev-type three-body equation for the $D\bar{D}π$ system in the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ channel. The $πD$ interaction is parametrised via a $D^*$ pole, and a three-body force is included to render the equations well defined. Its strength is adjusted such that the X(3872) appears as a $D\bar{D}^*$ bound state 0.5 MeV below the neutral threshold. We find that the trajectory of the X(3872) depends strongly on the assumed quark-mass dependence of the short-range interactions which can be determined in future lattice QCD calculations. At the same time we are able to provide nontrivial information on the chiral extrapolation in the $X$ channel.

High-resolution measurement of the time-modulated orbital electron capture and of the $β^+$ decay of hydrogen-like $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions

The periodic time modulations, found recently in the two-body orbital electron-capture (EC) decay of both, hydrogen-like $^{140}$Pr$^{58+}$ and $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions, with periods near to 7s and amplitudes of about 20%, were re-investigated for the case of $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ by using a 245 MHz resonator cavity with a much improved sensitivity and time resolution. We observed that the exponential EC decay is modulated with a period $T = 7.11(11)$s, in accordance with a modulation period $T = 7.12(11)$ s as obtained from simultaneous observations with a capacitive pick-up, employed also in the previous experiments. The modulation amplitudes amount to $a_R = 0.107(24)$ and $a_P = 0.134(27)$ for the 245 MHz resonator and the capacitive pick-up, respectively. These new results corroborate for both detectors {\it exactly} our previous findings of modulation periods near to 7s, though with {\it distinctly smaller} amplitudes. Also the three-body $β^+$ decays have been analyzed. For a supposed modulation period near to 7s we found an amplitude $a = 0.027(27)$, compatible with $a = 0$ and in agreement with the preliminary result $a = 0.030(30)$ of our previous experiment. These observations could point at weak interaction as origin of the observed 7s-modulation of the EC decay. Furthermore, the data suggest that interference terms occur in the two-body EC decay, although the neutrinos are not directly observed.

Two-Proton Radioactivity with 2p halo in light mass nuclei A$=$18$-$34

Two-proton radioactivity with 2p halo is reported theoretically in light mass nuclei A $=$ 18-34. We predict $^{19}$Mg, $^{22}$Si, $^{26}$S, $^{30}$Ar and $^{34}$Ca as promising candidates of ground state 2p-radioactivity with S$_{2p}$ $<$ 0 and S$_{p}$ $>$ 0. Observation of extended tail of spatial charge density distribution, larger charge radius and study of proton single particle states, Fermi energy and the wave functions indicate 2p halo like structure which supports direct 2p emission. The Coulomb and centrifugal barriers in experimentally identified 2p unbound $^{22}$Si show a quasi-bound state that ensures enough life time for such experimental probes. Our predictions are in good accord with experimental and other theoretical data available so far.

Quest for consistent modelling of statistical decay of the compound nucleus

A statistical model description of heavy ion induced fusion-fission reactions is presented where shell effects, collective enhancement of level density, tilting away effect of compound nuclear spin and dissipation are included. It is shown that the inclusion of all these effects provides a consistent picture of fission where fission hindrance is required to explain the experimental values of both pre-scission neutron multiplicities and evaporation residue cross-sections in contrast to some of the earlier works where a fission hindrance is required for pre-scission neutrons but a fission enhancement for evaporation residue cross-sections.

Total and differential cross sections of $η$-production in proton-deuteron fusion for excess energies between $Q_η=13\;\text{MeV}$ and $Q_η=81\;\text{MeV}$

New data on both total and differential cross sections of the production of $η$ mesons in proton-deuteron fusion to ${}^3\text{He}\,η$ in the excess energy region $13.6\;\text{MeV}\leq Q_η\leq 80.9\;\text{MeV}$ are presented. These data have been obtained with the WASA-at-COSY detector setup located at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, using a proton beam at 15 different beam momenta between $p_p = 1.60\;\text{GeV}/c$ and $p_p = 1.74\;\text{GeV}/c$. While significant structure of the total cross section is observed in the energy region $20\;\text{MeV}\lesssim Q_η\lesssim 60\;\text{MeV}$, a previously reported sharp variation around $Q_η\approx 50\;\text{MeV}$ cannot be confirmed. Angular distributions show the typical forward-peaking that was reported elsewhere. For the first time, it is possible to study the development of these angular distributions with rising excess energy over a large interval.

Rapid cooling of the compact star in Cassiopea A as a phase transition in dense QCD

We present a model of the compact star in Cassiopea A that accounts for its unusually fast cooling behavior. This feature is interpreted as an enhancement in the neutrino emission triggered by a transition from a fully gapped, two-flavor, color-superconducting phase to a crystalline phase or an alternative gapless, color-superconducting phase. By fine-tuning a single parameter -- the temperature of this transition -- a specific cooling scenario can be selected that fits the Cas A data. Such a scenario requires a massive $M\sim 2M_{\odot}$ star and is, therefore, distinctive from models invoking canonical 1.4 $M_{\odot}$ mass star with nucleonic pairing alone.

Stellar Core Collapse with Hadron-Quark Phase Transition

Hadronic matter undergoes a deconfinement transition to quark matter at high temperature and/or high density. It would be realized in collapsing cores of massive stars. In the framework of MIT bag model, the ambiguities of the interaction are encapsulated in the bag constant. Some progenitor stars that invoke the core collapses explode as supernovae, and other ones become black holes. The fates of core collapses are investigated for various cases. Equations of state including the hadron-quark phase transition are constructed for the cases of the bag constant B=90, 150 and 250 MeV fm^{-3}. To describe the mixed phase, the Gibbs condition is used. Adopting the equations of state with different bag constants, the core collapse simulations are performed for the progenitor models with 15 and 40Msolar. If the bag constant is small as B=90 MeV fm^{-3}, an interval between the bounce and black hole formation is shortened drastically for the model with 40Msolar and the second bounce revives the shock wave leading to explosion for the model with 15Msolar.

Solar neutrino physics: Sensitivity to light dark matter particles

Neutrinos are produced in several neutrino nuclear reactions of the proton-proton chain and carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycle that take place at different radius of the Sun's core. Hence, measurements of solar neutrino fluxes provide a precise determination of the local temperature. The accumulation of non-annihilating light dark matter particles (with masses between 5 GeV and 16 GeV in the Sun produces a change in the local solar structure, namely, a decrease in the central temperature of a few percent. This variation depends on the properties of the dark matter particles, such as the mass of the particle and its spin-independent scattering cross-section on baryon-nuclei, specifically, the scattering with helium, oxygen, and nitrogen among other heavy elements. This temperature effect can be measured in almost all solar neutrino fluxes. In particular, by comparing the neutrino fluxes generated by stellar models with current observations, namely 8B neutrino fluxes, we find that non-annihilating dark matter particles with a mass smaller than 10 GeV and a spin-independent scattering cross-section with heavy baryon-nuclei larger than 3 x 10^{-37} cm^-2 produce a variation in the 8B neutrino fluxes that would be in conflict with current measurements.

Hybrid stars in the light of the massive pulsar PSR J1614-2230

We perform a systematic study of hybrid star configurations using several parametrizations of a relativistic mean-field hadronic EoS and the NJL model for three-flavor quark matter. For the hadronic phase we use the stiff GM1 and TM1 parametrizations, as well as the very stiff NL3 model. In the NJL Lagrangian we include scalar, vector and 't Hooft interactions. The vector coupling constant $g_v$ is treated as a free parameter. We also consider that there is a split between the deconfinement and the chiral phase transitions which is controlled by changing the conventional value of the vacuum pressure $- Ω_0$ in the NJL thermodynamic potential by $- (Ω_0 + δΩ_0)$, being $δΩ_0$ a free parameter. We find that, as we increase the value of $δΩ_0$, hybrid stars have a larger maximum mass but are less stable, i.e. hybrid configurations are stable within a smaller range of central densities. For large enough $δΩ_0$, stable hybrid configurations are not possible at all. The effect of increasing the coupling constant $g_v$ is very similar. We show that stable hybrid configurations with a maximum mass larger than the observed mass of the pulsar PSR J1614-2230 are possible for a large region of the parameter space of $g_v$ and $δΩ_0$ provided the hadronic equation of state contains nucleons only. When the baryon octet is included in the hadronic phase, only a very small region of the parameter space allows to explain the mass of PSR J1614-2230. We compare our results with previous calculations of hybrid stars within the NJL model. We show that it is possible to obtain stable hybrid configurations also in the case $δΩ_0=0$ that corresponds to the conventional NJL model for which the pressure and density vanish at zero temperature and chemical potential.

Constraining the Symmetry Parameters of the Nuclear Interaction

One of the major uncertainties in the dense matter equation of state has been the nuclear symmetry energy. The density dependence of the symmetry energy is important in nuclear astrophysics, as it controls the neutronization of matter in core-collapse supernovae, the radii of neutron stars and the thicknesses of their crusts, the rate of cooling of neutron stars, and the properties of nuclei involved in r-process nucleosynthesis. We show that fits of nuclear masses to experimental masses, combined with other experimental information from neutron skins, heavy ion collisions, giant dipole resonances and dipole polarizabilities, lead to stringent constraints on parameters that describe the symmetry energy near the nuclear saturation density. These constraints are remarkably consistent with inferences from theoretical calculations of pure neutron matter, and, furthermore, with astrophysical observations of neutron stars. The concordance of experimental, theoretical and observational analyses suggests that the symmetry parameters S_v and L are in the range 29.0 - 32.7 MeV and 40.5 - 61.9 MeV, respectively, and that the neutron star radius, for a 1.4 M_sun star, is in the narrow window 10.7 km < R < 13.1 km (90% confidence). We can also set tight limits to the size of neutron star crusts and the fractional moment of inertia they contain, as well as the overall moment of inertia and quadrupole polarizability of 1.4 M_sun stars. Our results also have implications for the disk mass and ejected mass of compact mergers involving neutron stars.

Equation of state and neutron star properties constrained by nuclear physics and observation

Microscopic calculations of neutron matter based on nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory, combined with the recent observation of a 1.97 +- 0.04 M_sun neutron star, constrain the equation of state of neutron-rich matter at sub- and supranuclear densities. We discuss in detail the allowed equations of state and the impact of our results on the structure of neutron stars, the crust-core transition density, and the nuclear symmetry energy. In particular, we show that the predicted range for neutron star radii is robust. For use in astrophysical simulations, we provide detailed numerical tables for a representative set of equations of state consistent with these constraints.

A new equation of state for neutron star matter with nuclei in the crust and hyperons in the core

The equation of state for neutron stars in a wide-density range at zero temperature is constructed. The chiral quark-meson coupling model within relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation is adopted for uniform nuclear matter. The coupling constants are determined so as to reproduce the experimental data of atomic nuclei and hypernuclei. In the crust region, nuclei are taken into account within the Thomas-Fermi calculation. All octet baryons are considered in the core region, while only $Ξ^{-}$ appears in neutron stars. The resultant maximum mass of neutron stars is $1.95M_\odot$, which is consistent with the constraint from the recently observed massive pulsar, PSR J1614-2230.

Approximate relativistic bound states of a particle in Yukawa field with Coulomb tensor interaction

We obtain the approximate relativistic bound state of a spin-1/2 particle in the field of the Yukawa potential and a Coulomb-like tensor interaction with arbitrary spin-orbit coupling number k under the spin and pseudospin (p-spin) symmetries. The asymptotic iteration method is used to obtain energy eigenvalues and corresponding wave functions in their closed forms. Our numerical results show that the tensor interaction removes degeneracies between the spin and p-spin doublets and creates new degenerate doublets for various strengths of tensor coupling.

Volume Fluctuation and Autocorrelation Effects in the Moment Analysis of Net-proton Multiplicity Distributions in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Moments (Variance ($σ^2$), Skewness($S$), Kurtosis($κ$)) of multiplicity distributions of conserved quantities, such as net-baryon,net-charge and net-strangeness, are predicted to be sensitive to the correlation length of the system and connected to the thermodynamic susceptibilities computed in Lattice QCD and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model. In this paper, we present several measurement artifacts that could lead to volume fluctuation and auto-correlation effects in the moment analysis of net-proton multiplicity distributions in heavy-ion collisions using the UrQMD model. We discuss methods to overcome these artifacts so that the extracted moments could be used to obtain physical conclusions. In addition we present methods to properly estimate the statistical errors in moment analysis.

Chiral Hadronic Mean Field Model including Quark Degrees of Freedom

In an approach inspired by Polyakov loop extended NJL models, we present a nonlinear hadronic SU(3) sigma-omega mean field model augmented by quark degrees of freedom. By introducing the effective Polyakov loop related scalar field Φand an associated effective potential, the model includes all known hadronic degrees of freedom at low temperatures and densities as well as a quark phase at high temperatures and densities. Hadrons in the model exhibit a finite volume in order to suppress baryons at high T and μ. This ensures that the right asymptotic degrees of freedom are attained for the description of strongly interacting matter and allows to study the QCD phase diagram in a wide range of temperatures and chemical potentials. Therefore, with this model it is possible to study the phase transition of chiral restoration and deconfinement. In this paper, the impact of quarks on the resulting phase diagram is shown. The results from the chiral model are compared to recent data from lattice QCD.

α-Decay in Ultra-Intense Laser Fields

We investigate the α-decay of a spherical nucleus under the influence of an ultra-intense laser field for the case when the radius vector joining the center-of-masses of the α-particle and the daughter is aligned with the direction of the external field. The time-independent part of the α-daughter interaction is taken from elastic scattering compilations whereas the time-varying part describes the interaction between the decaying system with the laser field. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved numerically by appealing to a modified scheme of the Crank-Nicolson type where an additional first-order time derivative appears compared to the field-free case. The tunneling probability of the α-cluster, and derived quantities (decay rate, total flux) is determined for various laser intensities and frequencies for either continous waves or few-cycle pulses of envelope function F(t)=1. We show that in the latter case pulse sequences containing an odd number of half-cycles determine an enhancement of the tunneling probability compared to the field-free case and the continuous wave case. The present study is carried out taking as example the alpha decaying nucleus $^{106}$Te.

Bulk viscosity coefficients due to phonons in superfluid neutron stars

We calculate the three bulk viscosity coefficients as arising from the collisions among phonons in superfluid neutron stars. We use effective field theory techniques to extract the allowed phonon collisional processes, written as a function of the equation of state of the system. The solution of the dynamical evolution of the phonon number density allows us to calculate the bulk viscosity coefficients as function of the phonon collisional rate and the phonon dispersion law, which depends on the neutron pairing gap. Our method of computation is rather general, and could be used for different superfluid systems, provided they share the same underlying symmetries. We find that the behavior with temperature of the bulk viscosity coefficients is dominated by the contributions coming from the collinear regime of the $2\leftrightarrow3$ phonon processes. For typical star radial pulsation frequencies of $ω\sim 10^{4} s^{-1}$, we obtain that the bulk viscosity coefficients at densities $n \gtrsim 4n_0$ are within 10% from its static value for $T \lesssim 10^9 K$ and for the case of strong neutron superfluidity in the core with a maximum value of the $^3P_2$ gap above 1 MeV, while, otherwise, the static solution is not a valid approximation to the bulk viscosity coefficients. Compared to previous results from Urca and modified Urca reactions, we conclude that at $T\sim 10^9$K phonon collisions give the leading contribution to the bulk viscosities in the core of the neutron stars, except for $n \sim 2n_0$ when the opening of the Urca processes takes place.
