Reply to the comment on "Exact Expression for Radiation of an Accelerated Charge in Classical Electrodynamics"

Flaws and ambiguities are pointed out upon examining the comment attempting to solve a problem as raised recently --- the currently accepted formulation of electromagnetic radiation of an accelerated charge violates the principle of conservation of energy. This problem is not solved by the comment, due to a misunderstanding in the meaning of the total radiated power crossing a sphere. An experiment is suggested to determine whether on not the currently accepted formulation is valid.

Orbitron. Part II. Magnetic levitation

This paper devoted to proof the existence of stable quasi-periodic motions of the magnetic dipole that is under the action of the external magnetic field and homogeneous field of gravity. For proof this we used the group-theoretic methods of Hamiltonian mechanics, viz energy-momentum method. Numerical simulation shows the possibility of realization of stable motions with physically reasonable parameters of the system.

Photon in a cavity -- a Gedankenexperiment

The inertial and gravitational mass of electromagnetic radiation (i.e., a photon distribution) in a cavity with reflecting walls has been treated by many authors for over a century. After many contending discussions, a consensus has emerged that the mass of such a photon distribution is equal to its total energy divided by the square of the speed of light. Nevertheless, questions remain unsettled on the interaction of the photons with the walls of the box. In order to understand some of the details of this interaction, a simple case of a single photon with an energy $E_ν= h\,ν$ bouncing up and down in a static cavity with perfectly reflecting walls in a constant gravitational field $\vec{g}$, constant in space and time, is studied and its contribution to the weight of the box is determined as a temporal average.

The distribution of the electric current in a watt-balance coil

In the watt balance experiments, separate measurements of the magnetic and electromotive forces in a coil in a magnetic field enable a virtual comparison between mechanical and electric powers to be carried out, which lead to an accurate measurement of the Planck constant. This paper investigates the three-dimensional nature of the coil-field interaction and describes the balance operation by a continuous three-dimensional model.

Impact of a body against a rigid wall. Problem involving non-smooth and history dependent energy dissipation mechanism

We study the impact of a body against a rigid wall. The body consists of a rigid block and a viscoelastic rod described by the fractional Zener model. Translatory motion of a body is influenced by the dry friction, described by the set-valued Coulomb friction law. The problem is treated analytically by the use of the Laplace transform method and solutions are obtained in a convolution form. These solutions are compared with the ones obtained by using the numerical method.

N-tupling the capacity of each polarization state in radio links by using electromagnetic vorticity

The congestion of the radio frequency bands imposes serious limitations on the capacity and capability of modern wireless information infrastructures. One approach to enable frequency re-use is to exploit other physical conserved quantities of the electromagnetic fields, such as the orbital angular momentum (OAM) in addition to linear momentum, which is exploited in present-day telecommunications. Whereas in the optical regime the increase of channel capacity by using OAM states was demonstrated recently, the receiving antennas in commercial radio links have a much smaller extent than the transmitted beam, making the signal reception and characterization of the OAM state demanding. Moreover, radio data transmission with more than two channels per polarization state at the same frequency for radio links is known to be notoriously difficult to realize even with multiport techniques, long antenna baselines and digital post-processing. Here we report results from an outdoor, proof of concept experiment where the physical properties of OAM states were used to transfer information, using far-field multiplexing/demultiplexing of three coexisting collinear, vertically polarized and mutually independent OAM radio beams, opening new perspectives in wireless telecommunications.

Analytical quantitative description of wide plate U-free bend process of intelligent control

According to flexure theory of plate, on the premise of plane deformation assumption, an analytic model of U-free bend theory is proposed in this paper, which considered the harden, anisotropy and elastic deformation of material. Then the theoretical analysis on U-free bending of wide plate is made, the change rules of bending force with bending stroke and formula of target angularity are obtained, the various factors affecting bending force and rebound are analyzed. Furthermore, theoretical calculation and experiment and simulation results are compared, which provided theoretical basis for identifying parameters of the wide plate U-free bending intelligent control as well as determining variables of the input layer and output layer of prediction model.

Student Variability in Learning Advanced Physics

Learning of advanced physics, requires a combination of empirical, conceptual and theoretical understanding. Students use a combination of these approaches to learn new material. Each student has different prior knowledge and will master new material at a different pace. However, conventional classroom teaching usually does not accommodate the different learning paces of students. To both, study and address this issue, we developed an iterative Online Learning Machine (iOLM), which provides new learning content to each student based on their individual learning pace and tracks their progress individually. The iOLM learning module was implemented using server side web software (php) to supplement the undergraduate course in electromagnetic waves for majors in physics in their second year. This approach follows the hybrid online learning model. Students had to complete a section of the course using iOLM, which was only presented online. The data obtained for this class showed a wide spread of learning paces, ranging from 0.1 to 0.5, where 1 is the maximum pace allowed by iOLM and 0 the lowest. The mean was mu=0.25, with a standard deviation of sigma=0.12. While the pretest showed a positive correlation between the student's pace and performance, the postest had zero correlation, indicating that giving more time and content to weaker students allows them to catch up.

An Analytical Prediction of the Bifurcation Scheme of a Clarinet-Like Instrument: Effects of Resonator Losses

The understanding of the relationship between excitation parameters andoscillation regimes is a classical topic concerning bowed stringinstruments. The paper aims to study the case of reed woodwinds and attemptsto find consequences on the ease of playing. In the minimum model of clarinet-like instruments, three parameters areconsidered: i) the mouth pressure, ii) the reed opening at rest, iii) thelength of the resonator \ assumed to be cylindrical. Recently asupplementary parameter was added: the loss parameter of the resonator(using the \textquotedblleft Raman model\textquotedblright, that considersresonator losses to be independent of frequency). This allowed explainingthe extinction of sound when the mouth pressure becomes very large. Thepresent paper presents an extension of the paper by Dalmont et al (JASA,2005), searching for a diagram of oscillation regimes with respect to thereed opening and the loss parameter. An alternative method is used, whichallows easier generalization and simplifies the calculation. The emphasis is done on the emergencebifurcation: for very strong losses, it can be inverse, similarly to theextinction one for weak losses. The main part of the calculations areanalytical, giving clear dependence of the parameters. An attempt to deducemusical consequences for the player is given.

Shock Waves in Falling Coupled Harmonic Oscillators

Shock waves propagate in falling coupled harmonic oscillators. The bottom end of coupled harmonic oscillators does not fall downwards until a shock wave reaches the bottom end. The exact solution can be expressed by the Fourier series expansion, and an approximate solution can be expressed by the integral of the Airy function. The width of the shock wave increases slowly in accordance with a power law.

Violation of Fundamental Thermodynamic Law or Invalid Microstate Densities?

It is often incorrectly assumed that the number of microstates Ω(E,V,N,...) available to an isolated system can have arbitrary dependence on the extensive variables E,V,N, .... However, this is not the case for natural systems which can reach thermodynamic equilibrium since restrictions exist arising from the underlying equilibrium axioms of independence and \it{a priori} equal probability of microstate, and the fundamental constants of Nature. Here we derive a concise formula specifying the condition on Ω which must be met for real systems. Models which do not respect this condition will present inconsistencies when treated under equilibrium thermodynamic formalism. This has relevance to a number of recent models in which negative heat capacity and violation of fundamental thermodynamic law have been reported. Natural quantum systems obey the axioms and abide by the fundamental constants, and thus natural systems, in the absence of infinite range forces, can, in principle, attain thermodynamic equilibrium.

What is a Singularity in Geometrized Newtonian Gravitation?

I discuss singular spacetimes in the context of the geometrized formulation of Newtonian gravitation. I argue first that geodesic incompleteness is a natural criterion for when a model of geometrized Newtonian gravitation is singular, and then I show that singularities in this sense arise naturally in classical physics by stating and proving a classical version of the Raychaudhuri-Komar singularity theorem.

Locally equilibrated stress recovery for goal oriented error estimation in the extended finite element method

Goal oriented error estimation and adaptive procedures are essential for the accurate and efficient evaluation of numerical simulations that involve complex domains. By locally improving the approximation quality we can solve expensive problems which could result intractable otherwise. Here, we present an error estimation technique for enriched finite element approximations that is based on an equilibrated recovery technique, which considers the stress intensity factor as the quantity of interest. The locally equilibrated superconvergent patch recovery is used to obtain enhanced stress fields for the primal and dual problems defined to evaluate the error estimate.

Sensitivity studies of heat transfer: forced convection across a cylindrical pipe and duct flow

We consider two common heat transfer processes and perform a through sensitivity study of the variables involved. We derive and discuss analytical formulas for the heat transfer coefficient in function of film velocity, air temperature and pipe diameter. The according plots relate to a qualitative analysis of the multi-variable function $h$, according to functional optimization. For each process, we provide with graphs and tables of the parameters of interest, such as the Reynolds number. This method of study and the specific values can constitute a useful reference for didactic purposes.

One-step iterative reconstruction of conductivity inclusion via the concept of topological derivative

We consider an inverse problem of location identification of small conductivity inhomogeneity inside a conductor via boundary measurements which occurs in the EIT (Electrical Impedance Tomography). For this purpose, we derive topological derivative by applying the asymptotic formula for steady state voltage potentials in the existence of conductivity inclusion of small diameter. Using this derivative, we design only one-step iterative location search algorithm of small conductivity inhomogeneity completely embedded in the homogeneous domain by solving an adjoint problem. Numerical experiments presented for showing the feasibility of proposed algorithm.
