Drag Forces, Neutral Wind and Electric Conductivity Changes in the Ionospheric E Region

The neutrals in the Earth environment are in fact free and subjected to drag forces (by ions). In this study we show that drag or friction forces in the ionosphere-thermosphere system initiate changes in the plasma flow, neutral wind, and the conductivity, as well. Ions and electrons embedded in neutral wind field of velocity u acquire drifts perpendicular both to the initial neutral wind velocity and to the ambient magnetic field producing a perpendicular electric current. This perpendicular electric current is defined by a conductivity derived previously and the polarization electric field u x B. Self-consistently, the free neutrals acquires an additional neutral velocity component perpendicular to the initial neutral wind velocity u. The Pedersen and Hall currents wane within a specific time inversely proportional to neutral-ion collision frequency. These findings are relevant to a better understanding of electric current generation, distribution and closure in weakly ionized plasmas where charged particles (plasma) and neutrals are not bound (free) as the ionosphere and thermosphere in the Earth environment, the solar atmosphere-chromosphere region and even dusty plasmas. The theoretical results supposedly address to recent observations of meso-scale neutral wind rotation in the vicinity of auroral arcs (Kosch et al, 2010).

Global cold curve. New representation for zero-temperature isotherm in whole density range

Non-standard representation for so-called "cold curve" of matter (i.e. isotherm $T = 0$) is proposed as Global Cold Curve (GCC). The main point is that chemical potential of substance, $μ$, plays role of ruling parameter in basic GCC-dependence of internal energy under compression, $U = U(μ)$, in contrast to the standard form $U = U(ρ)$. This substitution changes radically low-density ("gaseous") part of GCC. Namely: ($i$) - physically meaningless part of standard cold curve $(U(ρ)$ at $T \rightarrow 0)$ disappears totally from new version of GCC. This deleted part corresponded to absolutely thermodynamically unstable states in standard representation $U(ρ)$; ($ii$) - new gaseous branch of cold curve, $U = U(μ)$, comes in GCC. It describes in simple, schematic way thermodynamics of whole gas-like plasma in low-temperature limit (Iosilevskiy: arXiv:0902.3708) as combination of all ionization and dissociation processes available for equilibrium plasma at finite temperature. This gaseous branch corresponds to thermodynamically stable and metastable states only. The only quantities that display themselves as meaningful details of new gaseous zero-temperature isotherm are combination of binding energies for all complexes (atomic, molecular and ionic) in their ground states, together with sublimation energy of gas-crystal phase transition ("energy scale" of material). Gaseous branch of GCC conjugate naturally with corresponding branch (cold curve) of condensed phase. New GCC form, $U = U(μ)$, no more contains meaningless part of traditional form $U(ρ)$ between gaseous and crystalline spinodals. The simple schematic structure ("ionization stairs"), which is typical for new form of cold curve in ultra-low densities, appears again as "composition stairs" in ultra-high densities in typical conditions of interiors in compact stars (P.Haensel et al.)

When omnigeneity fails

A generic non-symmetric magnetic field does not confine magnetized charged particles for long times due to secular magnetic drifts. Stellarator magnetic fields should be omnigeneous (that is, designed such that the secular drifts vanish), but perfect omnigeneity is technically impossible. There always are small deviations from omnigeneity that necessarily have large gradients. The amplification of the energy flux caused by a deviation of size $ε$ is calculated and it is shown that the scaling with $ε$ of the amplification factor can be as large as linear. In opposition to common wisdom, most of the transport is not due to particles trapped in ripple wells, but to the perturbed motion of particles trapped in the omnigeneous magnetic wells around their bounce points.

Ignition and Burn in a Small Magnetized Fuel Target

LASNEX calculations of a small magnetized target show high gain at a velocity significantly lower than needed for unmagnetized targets. Its cryogenic fuel layer appears to be raised to an equilibrium ignition temperature of about 2 keV by the radiation from the burning magnetized fuel.

The Quasilinear Premise for the Modeling of Plasma Turbulence

The quasilinear premise is a hypothesis for the modeling of plasma turbulence in which the turbulent fluctuations are represented by a superposition of randomly-phased linear wave modes, and energy is transferred among these wave modes via nonlinear interactions. We define specifically what constitutes the quasilinear premise, and present a range of theoretical arguments in support of the relevance of linear wave properties even in a strongly turbulent plasma. We review evidence both in support of and in conflict with the quasilinear premise from numerical simulations and measurements of plasma turbulence in the solar wind. Although the question of the validity of the quasilinear premise remains to be settled, we suggest that the evidence largely supports the value of the quasilinear premise in modeling plasma turbulence and that its usefulness may also be judged by the insights gained from such an approach, with the ultimate goal to develop the capability to predict the evolution of any turbulent plasma system, including the spectrum of turbulent fluctuations, their dissipation, and the resulting plasma heating.

Channeling of Electrons in a Crossed Laser Field

In this article a new analytical description of the effective interaction potential for a charged particle in the field of two interfering laser beams is presented. The potential dependence on the lasers intensities, orientation and parameters of the particle entering the considered system is analyzed. It is shown for the case of arbitrary lasers crossing angle that for different values of projectile velocity the attracting potential becomes a scattering one so that the channel axes and borders interchange each other. In addition the projectile radiation spectral distribution is given and general estimations on the expected beam radiation yield are outlined.

Influence of flavor oscillations on neutrino beam instabilities

We consider the collective neutrino plasma interactions, and study the electron plasma instabilities produced by a nearly mono-energetic neutrino beam in a plasma. We describe the mutual influence of neutrino flavor oscillations and electron plasma waves. We show that the neutrino flavor oscillations are not only perturbed by electron plasmas waves, but also contribute to the dispersion relation and the growth rates of neutrino beam instabilities.

Hollow screw like drill in plasma using an intense Laguerre Gaussian laser

With the development of ultra intense laser technology, MeV ions from the laser foil interaction have been obtained by different mechanisms, such as target normal sheath acceleration, radiation pressure acceleration, collisionless shock acceleration, breakout afterburner, and a combination of different mechanisms. These energetic ion beams can be applied in fast ignition for inertial confinement fusion, medical therapy, and proton imaging. However, these ions are mainly accelerated in the laser propagation direction, and the ion acceleration in an azimuthal orientation is scarcely mentioned. Here, a doughnut Laguerre Gaussian LG laser is used for the first time to study the laser plasma interaction in the relativistic intensity regime in three dimensional particle in cell simulations. Studies have shown that a novel rotation of the plasma is produced from the hollow screw like drill of a LG mode laser. The angular momentum of the protons in the longitudinal direction produced by the LG laser is remarkably enhanced compared with that produced by the usual laser pulses, such as linearly and circularly polarized gaussian pulses. Moreover, the particles, including electrons and ions, can be trapped and uniformly compressed in the dark central minimum of the doughnut LG pulse. Such hollow structured LG laser may be used to investigate some difficult problems, such as screw like drilling in the inertial confinement fusion, laser driven particle accelerations, and pulsars in the astrophysical environment.

Relativistic electron Wigner crystal formation in a cavity for electron acceleration

It is known that a gas of electrons in a uniform neutralizing background can crystallize and form a lattice if the electron density is less than a critical value. This crystallization may have two- or three-dimensional structure. Since the wake field potential in the highly-nonlinear-broken-wave regime (bubble regime) has the form of a cavity where the background electrons are evacuated from and only the positively charged ions remain, it is suited for crystallization of trapped and accelerated electron bunches. However, in this case, the crystal is moving relativistically and shows new three-dimensional structures that we call relativistic Wigner crystals. We analyze these structures using a relativistic Hamiltonian approach. We also check for stability and phase transitions of the relativistic Wigner crystals.

Self Diffusion of Yukawa system in presence of external magnetic field

Diffusion of dust particles is one of the most significant transport processes of strongly coupled dusty plasma that reflect the nature of inter particle interaction and characterize thermodynamics of the system. In this paper the effect of magnetic field on diffusion of dust particles in strongly coupled dusty plasma is investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations. Self- diffusion coefficients of Yukawa systems are obtained for a wide range of plasma parameters and magnetic field strength using Green- Kubo expression which is based on integrated velocity autocorrelation function (VACF). It is assumed that dust particles interact with each other by modified Yukawa (i.e. screened Coulomb) potential. The study gives interesting results of dust particle diffusion in magnetized plasma.

Caracterización de austenita expandida generada por cementación iónica de aceros inoxidables. Estudio de la estabilidad frente a la irradiación con haces de iones ligeros energéticos

This thesis was focused on the surface modification with plasma discharge. Austenitic AISI 316L stainless steel sample was carburised under different experimental conditions and mechanical properties have been studied (thickness, lattice parameter, elemental composition, hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance). After that, steel substrates have been nitrided or carburised in order to analyse their stability under ion bombardment using a plasma focus device. Helium and deuterium were the gases used in 0, 1, 5, and 10 discharges. Optical and X-ray characterisations were used. Finally, using magnetron sputtering nitrided/carburised samples were coated with an AlN thin film in order to study their stability under long treatments at high temperatures.

A New Scheme for High-Intensity Laser-Driven Electron Acceleration in a Plasma

We propose a new approach to high-intensity laser-driven electron acceleration in a plasma. Here, we demonstrate that a plasma wave generated by a stimulated forward-scattering of an incident laser pulse can be in a longest acceleration phase with an incident laser wave. This is why the plasma wave has the maximum amplification coefficient which is determined by the breakdown (overturn) electric field in which the acceleration of injected relativistic beam electrons occurs. We estimate qualitatively the acceleration parameters of relativistic electrons in the field of a plasma wave generated at the stimulated forward scattering of a high-intensity laser pulse in a plasma.

On a non-linear sigma model of knotted relaxed states far from thermodynamic equilibrium in plasma physics and beyond

We show that a Faddeev-Niemi non-linear sigma model describes in the long wavelength limit a wide class of steady-state, knotted physical systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium which are stable against perturbations of temperature and interact weakly with the external world. In these systems temperature gradients are negligible, inertial effects are negligible in comparison with diffusion effects, entropy is mainly produced through Joule and-or viscous heating, the macroscopic state is described by specifying a unit vector at each point, and the Gauss linking number of this unit vector is lower than a threshold. In fluids and plasmas, the model describes filamentary structures which adjust themselves in order to offer minimum resistance to the medium embedding them and to the electric currents (if any) flowing across them; in the latter case, Gauss linking number is related to magnetic helicity. Both n and the relative velocity of the filament with respect to the medium are approximately Double Beltrami vector fields. We derive a stability criterion for a double helix. Moreover, a similar discussion describes the recently discovered writing process of skyrmions in a magnetic film with the help of a beam of polarised electrons. We derive a lower bound on the value of beam current required to write a skyrmion.

Research Into a Neon Spectral Line Profile of Dusty Plasma

Ordered dusty structures influence plasma conditions. This influence can be revealed, when plasma spectral characteristics change, as dusty particles are injected. For example, a variation in the atomic temperature leads to a variation in the profiles of spectral lines. We studied the profile of a 585 nm neon spectral line in the dusty structures. The structures levitated in a positive column of a glow discharge at a pressure of 50-150 Pa and with a current of 1-9 mA. We scanned the profile with the use of a Fabry-Perot interferometer, by changing the air pressure between the interferometer mirrors. To process the data, a special algorithm was developed. The algorithm is resistant to a noise and a scanning speed instability. We have found an upper bound of the impact of dusty structures on the profile width. The appearance of macroparticles changes the atomic plasma temperature less than by 10 K.

Beam quality requirements for the Ion-Channel Laser

In this paper, we determine the electron beam quality requirements to obtain exponential radiation amplification in the ion-channel laser, where a relativistic electron beam wiggles in a focusing ion-channel that can be created in a wakefield accelerator. The beam energy and wiggler parameter spreads should be limited. Those spread limits are functions of the Pierce parameter, which is calculated here without neglecting the radiation diffraction. Two dimensional and three dimensional simulations of the self-consistent ion-channel laser confirm our theoretical predictions.

Mimetic Methods for Lagrangian Relaxation of Magnetic Fields

We present a new code that performs a relaxation of a magnetic field towards a force-free state (Beltrami field) using a Lagrangian numerical scheme. Beltrami fields are of interest for the dynamics of many technical and astrophysical plasmas as they are the lowest energy states that the magnetic field can reach. The numerical method strictly preserves the magnetic flux and the topology of magnetic field lines. In contrast to other implementations we use mimetic operators for the spatial derivatives in order to improve accuracy for high distortions of the grid. Compared with schemes using direct derivatives we find that the final state of the simulation approximates a force-free state with a significantly higher accuracy. We implement the scheme in a code which runs on graphical processing units (GPU), which leads to an enhanced computing speed compared to previous relaxation codes.
