Reducing the spectral index in F-term hybrid inflation

We consider a class of well motivated supersymmetric models of F-term hybrid inflation (FHI) which can be linked to the supersymmetric grand unification. The predicted scalar spectral index n_s cannot be smaller than 0.97 and can exceed unity including corrections from minimal supergravity, if the number of e-foldings corresponding to the pivot scale k_*=0.002/Mpc is around 50. These results are marginally consistent with the fitting of the three-year Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe data by the standard power-law cosmological model with cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. However, n_s can be reduced by applying two mechanisms: (i) The utilization of a quasi-canonical Kahler potential with a convenient choice of a sign and (ii) the restriction of the number of e-foldings that k_* suffered during FHI. In the case (i), we investigate the possible reduction of n_s without generating maxima and minima of the potential on the inflationary path. In the case (ii), the additional e-foldings required for solving the horizon and flatness problems can be generated by a subsequent stage of fast-roll [slow-roll] modular inflation realized by a string modulus which does [does not] acquire effective mass before the onset of modular inflation.

The High Density Region of QCD from an Effective Model

We study the high density region of QCD within an effective model obtained in the frame of the hopping parameter expansion and choosing Polyakov-type loops as the main dynamical variables representing the fermionic matter. This model still shows the so-called sign problem, a difficulty peculiar to non-zero chemical potential, but it permits the development of algorithms which ensure a good overlap of the simulated Monte Carlo ensemble with the true one. We review the main features of the model and present results concerning the dependence of various observables on the chemical potential and on the temperature, in particular of the charge density and the Polykov loop susceptibility, which may be used to characterize the various phases expected at high baryonic density. In this way, we obtain information about the phase structure of the model and the corresponding phase transitions and cross over regions, which can be considered as hints about the behaviour of non-zero density QCD.

New Higgs physics from the lattice

We report the first results from our comprehensive lattice tool set to explore non-perturbative aspects of Higgs physics in the Standard Model. We demonstrate in Higgs-Yukawa models that Higgs mass lower bounds and upper bounds can be determined in lattice simulations when triviality requires the necessity of a finite cutoff to maintain non-zero interactions. The vacuum instability problem is investigated and the lattice approach is compared with the traditional renormalization group procedure which sets similar goals to correlate lower and upper Higgs mass bounds with the scale of new physics. A novel feature of our lattice simulations is the use of Ginsparg-Wilson fermions to represent the effects of Top quark loops in Higgs dynamics. The need for chiral lattice fermions is discussed and the approach is extended to full Top-Higgs-QCD dynamics. We also report results from our large $N_F$ analysis of Top-Higgs Yukawa models to gain analytic insight and to verify our new lattice tool set which is deployed in the simulations. The role of non-perturbative lattice studies to investigate heavy Higgs particle scenarios is illustrated in extensions of the Standard Model.

On the effects of conformal degrees of freedom inside a neutron star

In this paper a neutron star with an inner core which undergoes a phase transition, which is characterized by conformal degrees of freedom on the phase boundary, is considered. Typical cases of such a phase transition are e.g. quantum Hall effect, superconductivity and superfluidity. Assuming the mechanical stability of this system the effects induced by the conformal degrees of freedom on the phase boundary will be analyzed. We will see that the inclusion of conformal degrees of freedom is not always consistent with the staticity of the phase boundary. Indeed also in the case of mechanical equilibrium there may be the tendency of one phase to swallow the other. Such a shift of the phase boundary would not imply any compression or decompression of the core. By solving the Israel junction conditions for the conformal matter, we have found the range of physical parameters which can guarantee a stable equilibrium of the phase boundary of the neutron star. The relevant parameters turn out to be not only the density difference but also the difference of the slope of the density profiles of the two phases. The values of the parameters which guarantee the stability turn out to be in a phenomenologically reasonable range. For the parameter values where the the phase boundary tends to move, a possible astrophysical consequence related to sudden small changes of the moment of inertia of the star is briefly discussed.

CP violation in chargino production in e+e- collisions

We present the analysis of CP-violating effects in non-diagonal chargino pair production in e+e- collisions. These effects appear only at the one-loop level. We show that CP-odd asymmetries in chargino production are sensitive to the phases of mu and A_t parameters and can be of the order of a few %.

$D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons in hot and dense matter

The $D$ and $\bar {D}$ mesons are studied in hot dense matter within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach taking, as bare interaction, a broken SU(4) s-wave Tomozawa-Weinberg interaction supplemented by an attractive isoscalar-scalar term. The in-medium solution at finite temperature incorporates Pauli blocking effects, baryon mean-field bindings, and $π$ and open-charm meson self-energies. In the $DN$ sector, the $Λ_c$ and $Σ_c$ resonances remain close to their free-space position while acquiring a remarkable width. As a result, the $D$ meson spectral density shows a single pronounced peak close to the free mass that broadens with increasing density specially towards lower energies. The low-density theorem is not a good approximation for the repulsive $\bar D$ self-energy close to saturation density. We discuss the implications for the $J/Ψ$ suppression at CBM (FAIR).

On a possible origin of a resonance-like structure in the two-photon invariant mass spectrum of the reaction pp->ppgg

We show that the resonance-like structure found by the \emph{CELSIUS-WASA Collaboration} in the two-photon invariant mass spectrum of the reaction $pp \to pp γγ$ is rather a signature of the $NN$-decoupled dibaryon resonance $d^\star_1$(1956) that is produced in the radiative process $pp \to γd^\star_1$ and then undergoes radiative decay into two protons $d^\star_1 \to pp γ$. It is found that a contribution of the dibaryon mechanism $pp \to γd^\star_1 \to pp γγ$ of the reaction $pp \to pp γγ$ to the invariant mass spectrum of its photon pairs can reasonably well reproduce the experimentally observed spectrum in the vicinity of the resonance-like structure.

Heavy Flavour Production in Deep--Inelastic Scattering - Two--Loop Massive Operator Matrix Elements and Beyond

We calculate the O($\eps$)--term of the two--loop massive operator matrix elements for twist 2--operators, which contribute to the heavy flavour Wilson coefficients in unpolarized deep--inelastic scattering in the asymptotic limit $Q^2 \gg m^2.$ Our calculation was performed in Mellin space using Mellin--Barnes integrals and generalized hypergeometric functions. The O($\eps$)--term contributes in the renormalization at 3--loop order.

Use and misuse of ChPT in the heavy-light systems

We discuss the range of validity of ChPT when applied to the systems of heavy-light mesons. Having in mind the recent experimental evidence according to which the heavy-light scalar and axial states are closer to the ground states than anticipated, we revisited the prediction for the chiral behavior of the B-Bbar mixing amplitude and examined the impact of nearness of the positive parity states. We conclude that the standard ChPT expressions with Nf=3 light flavours are not useful in guiding the extrapolation of hadronic quantities computed on the lattice. Instead those derived in HMChPT with Nf=2, i.e., including only the pion loops, are still adequate as long as they are applied to the pions lighter than 350 MeV, or the quarks lighter than a third of the physical strange quark mass.

What we have learned so far from 3-fluid hydrodynamics

Available data on heavy-ion collisions at AGS and SPS energies are analyzed using a 3-fluid dynamical model within a purely hadronic scenario. We investigate the problems met in reproducing these data within this scheme. In particular, we try to indicate those data which could point towards the occurrence of a phase transition into the quark-gluon phase. We also discuss the success of the model in reproducing the transverse-mass spectra of various hadrons. We argue that the simultaneous reproduction of the inverse-slope parameters of all considered particles may imply that these particles belong to the same hydrodynamic flow at the instant of their freeze-out rather than that it signals the onset of a phase transition.

H and A Discrimination using Linear Polarization of Photons at the PLC

First realistic estimate of the usefulness of the Photon Linear Collider with linearly polarized photons as analyzer of the CP-parity of Higgs bosons is presented. MSSM Higgs bosons H and A with 300 GeV mass, for the model parameters corresponding to the so called "LHC wedge" region, are considered. When switching from circular to linear photon polarization a significant increase in heavy quark production background, which is no longer suppressed by helicity conservation, and decrease of the Higgs boson production cross sections by a factor of two is expected. Nevertheless, after three years of Photon Linear Collider running heavy scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons in MSSM can be distinguished at a 4.5 sigma level.

Bottom Baryon Decays in Non-relativistic Quark Model

The reactions $Σ_b^* \to Λ_b π$, $Σ_b \to Λ_b π$, and $Ξ_b^* \to Ξ_b π$ are studied in the $^3P_0$ non-relativistic quark model with all the model parameters fixed in the sector of light quarks. The theoretical predictions for the decay widths $Γ_{Σ_b^* \to Λ_b π}$ and $Γ_{Σ_b \to Λ_b π}$ are consistent with the experimental data of the CDF Collaboration. Using as an input the recent mass of $Ξ_b$ and the theoretical predictions mass of $Ξ_b^{*}$, a narrow decay width about 1 MeV is predicted for the bottom baryon $Ξ_b^*$. The work suggests that the $^3P_0$ quark dynamics is of independence of environments where heavy quarks may or may not be a component of baryons.

An attempt to control a manmade nuclear fusion

A detailed simple model is applied to study a high temperature hydrogen plasma ball. It is assumed that the ions and delocalized electrons are distributed randomly throughout the charged plasma ball (extra/missing charge is assumed to be found in a thin layer on the surface of a ball). The energy of the microscopic electrostatic field around the ions is taken into account and calculated. It is shown in the framework of the model that charged hydrogen plasma ball can be stable as a metastable state, when subjected to external (atmospheric) pressure. Equilibrium radius of a ball, the barrier and the enthalpy of the equilibrium ball are calculated. It looks like the charged plasma ball in a metastable equilibrium should be used to conduct controllable nuclear fusion. Changes in the electric charge can be used to control the volume of a plasma ball.

Eta and Eta' physics

This talk describes the reasons why $η$ and $η^\prime$ decays are an interesting topic of study for both theory and experiment. The main part discusses the results of the recent calculation of $η\to3π$ at two-loop order in ChPT. Some puzzling aspects of the results compared to earlier dispersive calculations are highlighted. I also like to remind the reader of the use of $η$ and $η^\prime$ decays for studying the anomaly.

Mach cone shock waves at RHIC

Energy and momentum lost by hard jets propagating through hot and dense nuclear matter have to be redistributed in the medium. It has been conjectured that collective sound modes are excited. Those lead to Mach cone nuclear shock waves in the nuclear medium that are shown to account for three and four particle angular correlation structures of hadrons with a (semi-)hard trigger hadron in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC.

Factorization Approach for Top Mass Reconstruction at High Energies

Using effective theories for jets and heavy quarks it is possible to prove that the double differential top-antitop invariant mass distribution for the process $e^+e^-\to t\bar t$ in the resonance region for c.m. energies $Q$ much larger than the top mass can factorized into perturbatively computable hard coefficients and jet functions and a non-perturbative soft function. For invariant mass prescriptions based on hemispheres defined with respect to the thrust axis the soft function can be extracted from massless jet event shape distributions. This approach allows in principle for top mass determinations without uncertainties from hadronization using the reconstruction method and to quantify the top mass scheme dependence of the measured top quark mass value.
