Magnet traveling through a conducting pipe: a variation on the analytical approach

We present an analytical study of magnetic damping. In particular, we investigate the dynamics of a cylindrical neodymium magnet as it moves through a conducting tube. Owing to the very high degree of uniformity of the magnetization for neodymium magnets, we are able to provide completely analytical results for the EMF generated in the pipe, and the consequent retarding force. Our analytical expressions are shown to have excellent agreement with experimental observations.

It should be Einstein-Laub Equations inside Matter

In a recent article [1], Mansuripur has claimed that inside the matter, conventional Lorentz Force law should be abandoned in favor of a more general expression of the electromagnetic force density such as the one discovered by A. Einstein and J.Laub in 1908. The main focus of the claim of Mansuripur is based on special theory of relativity. According to [1], Lorentz force law is incompatible with special theory of relativity. In this article, we have focused in favor of Einstein-Laub equations (Force law; associated stress tensor, momentum density, Poynting vector etc) from quite different point of views. Especially we have tried to include previously and recently reported experimental observations, Abraham, Minkowski and Nelson controversy, Quantum Electrodynamics and most importantly the significance of associated stress tensors to judge the problem from a broader and engineering point of view. At the end of the day, considering all the issues, we have found that only Einstein-Laub equations can predict the actual total force inside the matter and probably consistent with all other laws of Electrodynamics.

The center of mass and center of charge of the electron

If the assumption that the center of mass(CM) and the center of charge(CC) of the electron are two different points was stated 100 years ago, our conceptual ideas about elementary particles would be different. This assumption is only compatible with a relativistic description. It suggests, from the classical point of view, that the angular momentum of the electron has to have a unique value. In the free motion, the CC follows a helix at the speed of light. The spin with respect to CC and to CM satisfy two different dynamical equations which shows that Dirac spin operator in the quantum case satisfies the same dynamical equation as the classical spin with respect to the CC. This means, among other things, that the addition of the three Dirac's spin operators of the three quarks can never give rise to the spin of the proton, so that the proton spin crisis could be related to this incompleteness in the addition of the quark's angular momenta. Some other effects related to spinning particles like the concept of gyromagnetic ratio, a classical description of tunneling and the formation of bound pairs of electrons, are analized.

Radiation reaction on a classical charged particle: a modified form of the equation of motion

We present and numerically solve a modified form of the equation of motion for a charged particle under the influence of an external force, taking into account the radiation reaction. This covariant equation is integrodifferential, as Dirac-Röhrlich's, but has several technical improvements. First, the equation has the form of the second Newton law, with acceleration isolated on the left hand side, and the force depending only on positions and velocities: thus, the equation is linear in the highest derivative. Second, the total four-force is by construction perpendicular to the four-velocity. And third, if the external force vanishes for all future times, the total force and the acceleration automatically vanish at present time. We show the advantages of this equation by solving it numerically for several examples of external force.

Absolute clock synchronisation and special relativity paradoxes

Solving special relativity paradoxes requires rigorous analysis of event timing, due to relative simultaneity in consequence of the Lorentz transformation. Since clock synchronisation is a convention in special theory of relativity, instead of the Einstein's procedure one may choose such that offers absolute simultaneity. We present in short the corresponding formalism in one spatial dimension. We show that paradoxes do not arise with this choice of synchronisation and descriptions of these issues are exceptionally simple and consistent for both observers involved.

Electromotive Force: A Guide for the Perplexed

The concept of electromotive force (emf) may be introduced in various ways in an undergraduate course of theoretical electromagnetism. The multitude of alternate expressions for the emf is often the source of confusion to the student. We summarize the main ideas, adopting a pedagogical logic that proceeds from the general to the specific. The emf of a "circuit" is first defined in the most general terms. The expressions for the emf of some familiar electrodynamical systems are then derived in a rather straightforward manner. A diversity of physical situations is thus unified within a common theoretical framework.

Analysis of the circular track experiment measuring the one-way speed of light

All experiments attempting to verify the invariance of speed of light directly are based on two-way speed measurement. The challenge in one-way speed measurement, the requirement of spatially separated synchronised clocks, can be possibly circumvented by measuring the speed of light travelling in a closed path. An apparent violation of the invariance principle has been recently reported in the first experiment attempting to measure the one-way speed of light utilising this concept. This experiment is reanalysed here. It is found that the results of the experiment can be explained within the framework of relativity, without requiring any violation of the invariance principle.

Micro-origin of Macro-strength: Friction

This paper presents an analytical study about the behavior of arbitrary shaped and sized non-cohesive two-dimensional granular materials. Several mechanical properties and relations are unraveled by connecting micro and macro scales in an explicit fashion that, at the same time, provides the basis of an analytical-theoretical framework for the development of new multi-scale techniques. Furthermore, the work herein presented is based on three main ideas that are developed and connected progressively; namely, the obtention of explicit expressions that enable us to relate micro-scale parameters, such as contact forces and fabric, to stress as a macro (continuum) physical property. Then, with these powerful tools, physical connections and relations between the mentioned micro-parameters and macro-constitutive parameters, in specific, Mohr-Coulomb's mobilized internal friction angle, are established. Finally, a non-linear optimization problem, which includes physical constraints at the contact point level, is proposed and solved in order to find the limit (maximum) internal friction angle in terms of the aforementioned micro-parameters. Thus, throughout this theoretical study, some important features about strength, anisotropy, contact buckling, and non-uniqueness of systems of contact forces are extracted, allowing us to have a deeper insight, as well as, a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of such complex-to-model materials.

The double-padlock problem: is secure classical information transmission possible without key exchange?

The idealized Kish-Sethuraman (KS) cipher is theoretically known to offer perfect security through a classical information channel. However, realization of the protocol is hitherto an open problem, as the required mathematical operators have not been identified in the previous literature. A mechanical analogy of this protocol can be seen as sending a message in a box using two padlocks; one locked by the Sender and the other locked by the Receiver, so that theoretically the message remains secure at all times. We seek a mathematical representation of this process, considering that it would be very unusual if there was a physical process with no mathematical description and indeed we find a solution within a four dimensional Clifford algebra. The significance of finding a mathematical description that describes the protocol, is that it is a possible step toward a physical realization having benefits in increased security with reduced complexity.

Radiation Reaction Force on a Particle

The Abrahamn Lorentz radiation reaction force term, with da/dt, derived in text books is shown to be incomplete. We show that, with the addition of a term, the classical radiation reaction force can be generalized to the relativistic force expression. This addition is the Poynting Robertson term, seen mostly in astrophysics and usually missing from texts in electromagnetism. With this term added, it takes into account the rate of change of mass dm/dt of the particle and makes the generalization to the relativisitic formula for force very straight forward.

Bringing simulation to implementation: Presentation of a global approach in the design of passive solar buildings under humid tropical climates

In early 1995, a DSM pilot initiative has been launched in the French islands of Guadeloupe and Reunion through a partnership between several public and private partners (the French Public Utility EDF, the University of Reunion Island, low cost housing companies, architects, energy consultants, etc...) to set up standards to improve thermal design of new residential buildings in tropical climates. This partnership led to defining optimized bio-climatic urban planning and architectural designs featuring the use of passive cooling architectural principles (solar shading, natural ventilation) and components, as well as energy efficient systems and technologies. The design and sizing of each architectural component on internal thermal comfort in building has been assessed with a validated thermal and airflow building simulation software (CODYRUN). These technical specifications have been edited in a reference document which has been used to build over 300 new pilot dwellings through the years 1996-1998 in Reunion Island and in Guadeloupe. An experimental monitoring has been made in these first ECODOM dwellings in 1998 and 1999. It will result in experimental validation of impact of the passive cooling strategies on thermal comfort of occupants leading to modify specifications if necessary. The paper present all the methodology used for the elaboration of ECODOM, from the simulations to the experimental results. This follow up is important, as the setting up of the ECODOM standard will be the first step towards the setting up of thermal regulations in the French overseas territories, by the year 2002.

Energy loss by the arbitrary moving charged particle in classical electrodynamics

The energy-impulse flow of electromagnetic field, produced by the arbitrary moving charged particle, through the sphere of large radius is calculated. The result formulae are used in problem of radiation produced by hyperbolically moving particle and the problem of the synchrotron radiation energy loss. The energy-impulse radiated by a moving charged particle is shown to be not an invariant 4-tensor, for this reason calculation methods based on change of reference frame are not correct.

Domino Magnification

The conditions are investigated under which a row of increasing dominoes is able to keep tumbling over. The analysis is restricted to the simplest case of frictionless dominoes that only can topple not slide. The model is scale invariant, i.e. dominoes and distance grow in size at a fixed rate, while keeping the aspect ratios of the dominoes constant. The maximal growth rate for which a domino effect exist is determined as a function of the mutual separation.

Double scale analysis of periodic solutions of some non linear vibrating systems

We consider {\it small solutions} of a vibrating system with smooth non-linearities for which we provide an approximate solution by using a double scale analysis; a rigorous proof of convergence of a double scale expansion is included; for the forced response, a stability result is needed in order to prove convergence in a neighbourhood of a primary resonance.

Minimalist's Electromagnetism - Different Axioms and Different Insight

That the speed of light is a universal constant is a logical consequence of Maxwell's equations. Here we show the converse is also true. Electromagnetism (EM) and electrodynamics (ED), in all details, can be derived from two simple assumptions: i) the speed of light is a universal constant and, ii) the common observations that there are the so-called charged particles that interact with each other. Conventional EM and ED are observation based. The proposed alternative spares all those observational foundations, only to reintroduce them as theoretically derived and empiricism-free laws of Nature. There are merits to simplicity. For instance, when one learns that Poisson's equation emerges as a corollary of the formalism, one immediately concludes that Coulomb's $1/r^2$ law of force is exact. Or, if it turns out that $\nabla.\mathbf{B}=0$ follows from the theory, then non-existence of (at least classical) magnetic monopoles will be an exact law of Nature. The list is longer than the these two examples.

Certification of projection-based reduced order modelling in computational homogenisation by the Constitutive Relation Error

In this paper, we propose upper and lower error bounding techniques for reduced order modelling applied to the computational homogenisation of random composites. The upper bound relies on the construction of a reduced model for the stress field. Upon ensuring that the reduced stress satisfies the equilibrium in the finite element sense, the desired bounding property is obtained. The lower bound is obtained by defining a hierarchical enriched reduced model for the displacement. We show that the sharpness of both error estimates can be seamlessly controlled by adapting the parameters of the corresponding reduced order model.

On the macroscopic verifications of Klein's theorem and the proof of $E_0=mc^2$

Alternative verifications of Klein's theorem and the proof of $E_0=mc^2$, for a relativistic macroscopic body are presented, using models with boundary conditions of varying complexity, together with some refinements for the case containing electromagnetic radiation for the simplest model. The robustness of these models to the final result of $E_0=mc^2$, attests to the minor role played by the Poincaré type stresses introduced in some of these models for mechanical stability. Finally we caution the reader that while internal consistency of the $E_0=mc^2$ relation for a macroscopic body in special relativity is proved, it does not in any way furnish a proof of the relation for a single point particle, for this would imply that one is able to prove the postulates of special relativity from the premises of the theory itself.
