Maudlin's Challenge Refuted: A Reply to Lewis

Lewis has recently argued that Maudlin's contingent absorber experiment remains a significant problem for the Transactional Interpretation (TI). He argues that the only straightforward way to resolve the challenge is by describing the absorbers as offer waves, and asserts that this is a previously unnoticed aspect of the challenge for TI. This argument is refuted in two basic ways: (i) it is noted that the Maudlin experiment cannot be meaningfully recast with absorbers described by quantum states; instead the author replaces it with an ordinary which-way experiment; and (ii) the extant rebuttals to the Maudlin challenge in its original form are not in fact subject to the alleged flaws that Lewis ascribes to them. This paper further seeks to clarify the issues raised in Lewis' presentation concerning the distinction between quantum systems and macroscopic objects in TI. It is noted that the latest, possibilist version of TI (PTI) has no ambiguity concerning macroscopic absorbers. In particular, macroscopic objects are not subject to indeterminate trajectories, since they are continually undergoing collapse. It is concluded that the Maudlin challenge poses no significant problem for the transactional interpretation.

Readout Optical System of Sapphire Disks intended for Long-Term Data Storage

The development of long-term data storage technology is one of the urging problems of our time. This paper presents the results of implementation of technical solution for long-term data storage technology proposed a few years ago on the basis of single crystal sapphire. It is shown that the problem of reading data through a substrate of negative single crystal sapphire can be solved by using for reading a special optical system with a plate of positive single crystal quartz. The experimental results confirm the efficiency of the proposed method of compensation.

Demonstration of the Inverse Square Law with the aid of a Tablet/smartphone

In this paper we show how to obtain the Inverse-square law of the distance to the light intensity emitted from a small source in a simple, fast and with good precision way. With the aid of two smartphones, free apps and a ruler, one is able to measure the distances between the devices listed (one as a source and the other as a measuring light intensity) and the respective light intensities measured by the probeware in the device. The ease of reproduction of the proposed experiment and the penetration of the use of tablets and smartphones among students and teachers, could make the proposed activity a good alternative to the introduction of physical phenomena which exhibit the same functional dependence, such as the Law of Newton's Universal Gravitation and Coulomb's Law.

Aboriginal Astronomical Traditions from Ooldea, South Australia, Part 1: Nyeeruna and the Orion Story

Whilst camped at Ooldea, South Australia, between 1919 and 1935, the amateur anthropologist Daisy Bates CBE (1859-1951) recorded the daily lives, lore, and oral traditions of the Aboriginal people of the Great Victoria Desert region surrounding Ooldea. Among her archived notes are stories regarding the Aboriginal astronomical traditions of this region. One story in particular, involving the stars making up the modern western constellations of Orion and Taurus, and thus referred to here as "The Orion Story", stands out for its level of detail and possible references to transient astronomical phenomena. Here, we critically analyse several important elements of "The Orion Story", including its relationship to an important secret-sacred male initiation rite. This paper is the first in a series attempting to reconstruct a more complete picture of the sky knowledge and star lore of the Aboriginal people of the Great Victoria Desert.

A Necro-Biological Explanation for the Fermi Paradox

As we learn more about the frequency and size distribution of exoplanets, we are discovering that terrestrial planets are exceedingly common. The distribution of orbital periods in turn results in many of these planets being the occupants of the Habitable Zone of their host stars. Here we show that a conclusion of prevalent life in the universe presents a serious danger due to the risk of spreading Spontaneous Necro-Animation Psychosis (SNAP), or Zombie-ism. We quantify the extent of the danger posed to Earth through the use of the Zombie Drake Equation and show how this serves as a possible explanation for the Fermi Paradox. We demonstrate how to identify the resulting necro-signatures present in the atmospheres where a zombie apocalypse may have occurred so that the risk may be quantified. We further argue that it is a matter of planetary defense and security that we carefully monitor and catalog potential SNAP-contaminated planets in order to exclude contact with these worlds in a future space-faring era.

Quantifying the Fermi paradox in the local Solar neighborhood

The Fermi paradox highlights the dichotomy between the lack of physical contact with other civilizations and the expectation that technological civilizations are assumed likely to evolve in many locations in the Milky Way galaxy, given the large number of planetary systems within this galaxy. Work by Landis and others has modeled this question in terms of percolation theory and cellular automata, using this method to parametrize our ignorance about possible other civilizations as a function of the probability of one system to colonize another, and the maximum number of systems reachable from each starting location (i.e. the degree in the network used for percolation). These models used a fixed lattice of sites to represent a stellar region, so the degree of all sites were identical. In this paper, the question is examined again, but instead of using a pre-determined lattice, the actual physical positions of all known star systems within 40 parsecs of the Solar System are used as percolation sites; in addition, the number of sites accessible for further colonization from a given system is determined by a choice of maximum distance such efforts can travel across. The resulting simulations show that extraterrestrial colonization efforts may reach the Solar System, but only for certain values of the maximum travel distance and probability of an occupied system further colonizing other systems. Indeed, large numbers of systems may be colonized with either vessels that lack insufficient travel distance to reach the Solar System or else have a colonization probability where they are statistically unlikely to reach us.

A Ballistic Monte Carlo Approximation of π

We compute a Monte Carlo approximation of π using importance sampling with shots coming out of a Mossberg 500 pump-action shotgun as the proposal distribution. An approximated value of 3.131 is obtained, corresponding to a 0.33% error on the exact value of π. To our knowledge, this represents the first attempt at estimating π using such method, thus opening up new perspectives towards computing mathematical constants using everyday tools.

Illustrations of Equivalent Methods to Reproduce Vehicle and Occupant Dynamics as a Pedagogical Tool

When explaining to a lay audience the magnitude of forces or accelerations imparted to vehicles or experienced by vehicle occupants during a motor vehicle collision, it is often helpful to recast the critical results in terms of other physical systems or impact configurations which will reproduce the equivalent dynamics of the subject accident to serve as a conceptual aid for the audience. In this article, we present the basis for such equivalents and explicitly demonstrate, using two physics simulation software packages, that such equivalents are based on nothing more than the application of the laws of physics.

Note de lecture: 'Climat: 15 vérités qui dérangent'

This is a critical review of the book 'Climat: 15 vérités qui dérangent', under the scientific supervision of Pr Itsvan Markó, and co-authored by Anne Debeil, Ludovic Delory, Samuel Furfari, Drieu Godefridi, Henri Masson, Lars Myren, and Alain Préat. We show that regarding climate science, the book contains too many approximations or mistakes to be considered seriously. Nevertheless, the book is interesting in several aspects, in particular from an epistemological perspective. We also argue that the main take-home message is not stated clearly enough by the authors: there is a strong practical incompatibility between economic \emph{laissez-faire} and anthropogenic climate change.

The University of Washington Mobile Planetarium Do-it-Yourself Guide

The UW Mobile Planetarium Project is a student driven effort to bring astronomy to high schools and the Seattle community. We designed and built an optics solution to project WorldWide Telescope in an inflatable planetarium from a laptop and off-the-shelf HD projector. In our first six months of operation, undergraduates at the UW gave planetarium shows to over 1500 people and 150 high school students created and presented their own astronomy projects in our dome, at their school. This document aims to share the technical aspects behind the project in order for others to replicate or adapt our model to their needs. This UW Mobile Planetarium was made possible thanks to a Hubble Space Telescope Education/Public Outreach Grant.

Consciousness as a State of Matter

I examine the hypothesis that consciousness can be understood as a state of matter, "perceptronium", with distinctive information processing abilities. I explore five basic principles that may distinguish conscious matter from other physical systems such as solids, liquids and gases: the information, integration, independence, dynamics and utility principles. This approach generalizes Giulio Tononi's integrated information framework for neural-network-based consciousness to arbitrary quantum systems, and provides interesting links to error-correcting codes and condensed matter criticality, as well as an interesting connections between the emergence of consciousness and the emergence of time. (For more technical details, see arXiv:1401.1219).

Life on a tidally-locked planet

A tidally-locked planet in its orbit around a star keeps the same face towards the star. This happens when the rotation period of the planet around its own axis becomes equal to its revolution period around the star. Many questions then arise. What gives rise to a tidal locking? Are there any tidally-locked planets somewhere? What will be the atmospheric system of a tidally-locked planet? Could life be sustained on a tidally-locked planet? What will be a sort of DAY in the life of a denizen of a tidally-locked planet? We dwell on these questions.

Judo: how to enhance tactics in competition, biomechanics of combination and action reaction

This paper is an ideal continuation of the previous one - How to enhance effectiveness of Direct Attack Judo throws -in it there are analyzed the two following parts of Judo tactics in high level competitions: combination, and action-reaction. The paper start with a review of the Japanese approach to Initiative ( Sen) and follows by the biomechanical view of the same subject. High level competitions are the main argument not only of coaches match analysis , but also of a lot of scientific researches. However the connection between these two field that analyze the same subject is very hard . A lot of information are not easily transfer to coaching area. In this paper the effort to give coaching useful information is the primary aspect also at detriment of some formal mechanical information. After a new Operative Classification of throwing techniques , the biomechanical analysis of combination and action-reaction tricks flows in easy way singling out some interesting finding, useful for coaches. With this effort the biomechanical analysis of judo Interaction in high level competition could be considered completed

Easily repairable networks

We introduce a simple class of distribution networks which withstand damage by being repairable instead of redundant. We prove a lower bound for the expected cost of repair, and show that for networks on the square and triangular lattice, this bound is achievable and results in a network with exactly three levels of structural hierarchy. We extend our results to networks subject to repeated attacks, in which the repairs themselves must be repairable. We find that, in exchange for a modest increase in repair cost, such networks are able to withstand any number of attacks.

The simplest method to measure the geocentric lunar distance: a case of citizen science

We present the results of measuring the geocentric lunar distance using what we propose is the simplest method to achieve a precise result. Although lunar distance has been systematically measured to a precision of few millimeters using powerful lasers and retroreflectors installed on the moon by the Apollo missions, the method devised and applied here can be readily used by nonscientist citizens (e.g. amateur astronomers or students) and it requires only a good digital camera. After launching a citizen science project called the Aristarchus Campaign, intended to involve astronomy enthusiasts in scientific measurement of the Lunar Eclipse of 15 April 2014, we compiled and measured a series of pictures obtained by one of us (J.C. Figueroa). These measurements allowed us to estimate the lunar distance to a precision of 3%. We describe here how to perform the measurements and the method to calculate from them the geocentric lunar distance using only the pictures time stamps and a precise measurement of the instantaneous lunar apparent diameter. Our aim here is not to provide any improved measurement of a well-known astronomical quantity, but rather to demonstrate how the public could be engaged in scientific endeavors and how using simple instrumentation and readily available technological devices such as smartphones and digital cameras, any person can measure the local Universe as ancient astronomers did.

Bonaparte and the astronomers of Brera Observatory

In Northern Italy, between 1796 and 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte formed a Republic, and then a Kingdom, controlled by France. Milan was the capital of the State, and the Brera Palace was the main cultural centre, as regards both the arts and the sciences. Bonaparte probably intended to strengthen this characteristic of Brera, aiming at increasing its Italian and European relevance. We will discuss in detail in which way he interacted with the astronomers of Brera Observatory, and in particular with Barnaba Oriani, that was considered the local main representative of the 'republique des lettres', that is, the world of literature, arts and sciences. We propose a possible reconstruction of the effects of those complicated historical events on the Italian astronomy and on its relations with the European one.

Rational Relativistic Collisions

If two point particles collide relativistically in one dimension, and the masses, velocities and gamma factors of the incoming particles are rational numbers, then the velocities and gamma factors of the outgoing particles are rational. Numerous examples can be found using Pythagorean triples. At all velocities, the collision results in a Lorentzian reflection of the 2-momenta of the particles.

A Rotatable Stabiliser for the Control of Pitch and Yaw in a Radio-controlled Aircraft

This research implements a design for the control of a rotatable stabiliser which, it is proposed, might augment, or fully replace, the conventional control mechanisms for pitch and yaw in certain types of aircraft. The anticipated advantages of such a device are around 25% less drag, for a capability which ranges between equivalent and greater than twofold that of a conventional tail. The tail of a popular, radio-controlled, model aircraft is replaced with a rotatable stabiliser and its rotation is effected by way of a continuously-rotating servo, modified with a potentiometer. Two hollow, carbon-fibre shafts (one sleeved within the other so as to allow free rotation) serve as the mechanical link between the servo and the tail. Inserting wiring along the full length of the innermost shaft and incorporating three slip rings into its collar, at the forward, servo end, facilitated an electrical supply to the tail. A mapping betweeen the position of the controls and states of the stabiliser is formulated. Small and continuous adjustments cause the stabiliser to rotate in the opposite direction to the controls (when viewed from aft) and the deflection of the hinged control surface is proportional to the radial displacement of the controls from their centred position. For what would amount to large and contradictory rotations of the device in terms of this protocol (rotations greater than 90$^\circ$), the desired configuration can be more efficiently achieved by regarding the device's original orientation to differ by 180$^\circ$ from what it actually is and by reversing the sign of the deflection. One consequence of this latter mode of control is that a symmetrical aerofoil is indicated. General flight, including static longitudinal and directional stability, was not found to be compromised.
