Another Hamiltonian "Thermostat" - Comments on arXiv Contributions 1203.5968, 1204.4412, 1205.3478, and 1206.0188

Campisi, Zhan, Talkner, and Haenggi state, in promoting a new logarithmic computational thermostat [ arXiv 1203.5968 and 1204.4412 ], that (thermostated) Nose-Hoover mechanics is not Hamiltonian. First I point out that Dettmann clearly showed the Hamiltonian nature of Nose-Hoover mechanics. The trajectories {q(t)} generated by Dettmann's Hamiltonian are identical to those generated by Nose-Hoover mechanics. I also observe that when the (Hamiltonian) Campisi thermostat is applied to "nonequilibrium" heat transfer problems some very interesting, and somewhat paradoxical, phase portraits can result. See too Marc Meléndez' nice arXiv 1205.3478 and our joint work 1206.0188 .

Self inductance of a wire loop as a curve integral

It is shown that the self inductance of a wire loop may be written as a curve integral akin to the Neumann formula for the mutual inductance of two wire loops. The only difference is that contributions where the two integration variables get too close to each other must be excluded from the curve integral and evaluated in detail. The contributions of these excluded segments depend on the distribution of the current in the cross section of the wire. They add to a simple constant proportional to the wire length. The error of the new expression is of first order in the wire radius if there are sharp corners and of second order in the wire radius for smooth wire loops.

The twin paradox in relativity revisited

The accepted resolution of the twin paradox in relativity states that the age of the inertial twin `jumps' when the traveling twin undergoes his turn-around acceleration. This resolution is based on the use of the equivalent gravitational shift in the frame of the accelerating twin. We use the same analysis to propose a symmetric variant of the problem with the twins experiencing identical acceleration and deceleration phases, but which predicts conflicting results for the age of the other twin. We also propose an unambiguous test of the standard resolution based on the Pound-Rebka experiment.

Breakdown of the power-law decay prediction of the heat current correlation in one-dimensional momentum conserving lattices

We show that the asymmetric inter-particle interactions can induce rapid decay of the heat current correlation in one-dimensional momentum conserving lattices. When the asymmetry degree is appropriate, even exponential decay may arise. This fact suggests that the power-law decay predicted by the hydrodynamics may not be applied to the lattices with asymmetric inter-particle interactions, and as a result, the Green-Kubo formula may instead lead to a convergent heat conductivity in the thermodynamic limit. The mechanism of the rapid decay is traced back to the fact that the heat current has to drive a mass current additionally in the presence of the asymmetric inter-particle interactions.

Does Lorentz Force Law Contradict the Principle and Theories of Relativity for Uniform Linear Motion?

I show that no force or torque is generated in cases involving a charge and a magnet with their relative velocity zero, in any inertial frame of reference. A recent suspicion of an anomalous torque and conflict with relativity in this case is rested. What is distilled as `Lorentz force' in standard electrodynamics, with relative velocity as the parameter, is an under-representation of two distinct physical phenomena, an effect due to Lorentz contraction and another due to the Ampere current-current interaction, rolled into one due to prejudice from special relativity applied only to linear motion. When both are included in the analysis of the problem there is no anomalous force or torque, ensuring the validity of Poincare's principle of relativity. The issue of validity of electrodynamics without the concept of absolute rest, however, is subtle and empirically open when general noninertial motion is considered, as I will discuss in another paper.

A Coning Theory of Bullet Motions

Each observable ballistic phenomenon of a spin-stabilized rifle bullet can be explained in terms of the acceleration of gravity and the total aerodynamic force acting on that bullet. In addition to the coning motion itself, Coning Theory explains the spinning bullet's aerodynamic jump and its steadily increasing yaw of repose together with its resulting spin-drift. The total aerodynamic force on the bullet comprises its drag and lift rectangular components and produces an associated overturning moment acting upon the rigid bullet. The coning motion of the bullet includes two distinct but synchronized aspects: 1) the well-known gyroscopic precession of the spin-axis of the bullet, and 2) the previously little-known orbiting of the center of gravity of the bullet around its mean trajectory with the nose of the bullet angled inward toward that trajectory. New equations are developed governing the orbital motion of the CG as a circular, isotropic harmonic oscillation driven by the lift and drag forces as they revolve together at the gyroscopic precession rate. Standard Tri-Cyclic Theory governs the uniform circular precession of the spin-axis driven by the overturning moment acting on the spinning bullet as a free-flying gyroscope. The synchronization of these two motions is the defining principle of Coning Theory.

Foundations of Newtonian Dynamics: An Axiomatic Approach for the Thinking Student

Despite its apparent simplicity, Newtonian Mechanics contains conceptual subtleties that may cause some confusion to the deep-thinking student. These subtleties concern fundamental issues such as, e.g., the number of independent laws needed to formulate the theory, or, the distinction between genuine physical laws and derivative theorems. This article attempts to clarify these issues for the benefit of the student by revisiting the foundations of Newtonian Dynamics and by proposing a rigorous axiomatic approach to the subject. This theoretical scheme is built upon two fundamental postulates, namely, conservation of momentum and superposition property for interactions. Newton's Laws, as well as all familiar theorems of Mechanics, are shown to follow from these basic principles.

Classical-Information Theoretical View of Physical Measurements and Generalized Uncertainty Relations

General characterization of physical measurements is discussed within the framework of a classical information theory. Uncertainty relation for simultaneous measurements of two physical observables is defined in this framework for generalized dynamic systems controlled under general kinds of equations of motion. We have treated only a mean-square error of the Gauss(-like) distributions in this report. Lessening of the Kennard-Robertson type uncertainties due to boundary conditions are quantitatively discussed using the information entropy.

Why old tires are still being preferred as dock bumpers in harbours

The usage of old tires as dock and tugboat bumpers has been a common practice from long ago, proving to be safe for docking even the largest freighters. The reaction force and stored energy of an axially compressed tire is studied in order to determine the specific features of these variables that make tires so adequate as docking protections. The reaction force is attributed to the elastic deformation of the tread, which is modeled as a not too thin cylindrical shell. Most energy absorption takes place after tread buckling, which bends tread and increases its circumference, inducing strong tensile forces that contribute to stabilize the buckled structure. Results shed light on the mechanical properties that a designed dock bumper should exhibit.

Effects of Nonlinear Decoherence on Halo Formation

High intensity proton linacs and storage rings are central for the development of advanced neutron sources, extending the intensity frontier in high energy physics, as drivers for the production of pions in neutrino factories or muon colliders, and for the transmutation of radioactive waste. Such high intensity beams are not attainable using conventional linear lattices. It has been shown in the single particle limit that integrable nonlinear lattices permit much larger tune spreads than conventional linear lattices, which would mitigate many of the space charge restrictions that limit intensity. In this paper, we present numerical studies of space charge effects on a trial nonlinear lattice with intense bunches. We observe that these nonlinear lattices and their accompanying tune spreads strongly mitigate halo formation using a result from the particle-core model known to cause halo formation in linear lattices.

A Universally Valid Uncertainty Relation Revisited

A universally valid uncertainty relation proposed by Ozawa is re-investigated under for the generalized equation of motion with some boundary condition. Necessary conditions for violation (lessening) of the Heisenberg-type uncertainty relation is discussed in detail. An experimental test of lessening of the generalized uncertainty relation due to the boundary condition is shown by re-analyzing the data measuring electron densities of hydrogen molecule encapsulated in a cage of fullerene C60.

One way to Lorentz's Transformations

There are many papers devoted to derivation of Lorentz Transformations (LT). Many people have pro posed alternative derivations. Their analysis allows looking at LT and their consequences from different standpoints. At the same time it is important to choose the simplest and general way of derivation of LT for textbooks, to make them more accessible to a wide circle of laymen interested in the elativistic physics and to leave the W.Voight's, J.Larmor's, G.Lorentz's, A.Einstein's and other derivations for the history. A short, clear and simple derivation of generalized LT based on the Principle of Relativity and unknown dependence of the clocks tick rate (time dilation) on their velocity is presented in this paper.

Torques without Rotation: the Right-Angle Lever

An extended body subject to external forces which exert zero net force and zero total torque in the rest frame, may experience a nonzero torque in another inertial frame, and nonetheless does not rotate. Long known as the Trouton-Noble or right-angle lever paradox, there has been extensive discussion and indeed controversy, but a clear understanding comes from a suitable treatment of angular momentum and simultaneity.

Producing Acoustic 'Frozen Waves': Simulated experiments

In this paper we show how appropriate superpositions of Bessel beams can be successfully used to obtain arbitrary longitudinal intensity patterns of nondiffracting ultrasonic wavefields with very high transverse localization. More precisely, the method here described allows generating longitudinal acoustic pressure fields, whose longitudinal intensity patterns can assume, in principle, any desired shape within a freely chosen interval 0 < z < L of the propagation axis, and that can be endowed in particular with a s t a t i c envelope (within which only the carrier wave propagates). Indeed, it is here demonstrated by computer evaluations that these very special beams of non-attenuated ultrasonic field can be generated in water-like media by means of annular transducers. Such fields "at rest" have been called by us << Acoustic Frozen Waves >> (FW). The paper presents various cases of FWs in water, and investigates their aperture characteristics, such as minimum required size and ring dimensioning, as well as the influence they have on the proper generation of the desired FW patterns. The FWs are particular Localized Solutions to the wave equation that can be used in many applications, like new kinds of devices, such as, e.g., acoustic tweezers or scalpels, and especially various ultrasound medical apparatus; e.g. for attempting the destruction of tumor cells without affecting the preceding and subsequent (and surrounding) tissues. Keywords: Ultrasound; Frozen Waves; Bessel beam superpositions; Non-diffractive waves; Localized Waves; Annular transducers.

A Connection between Special Theory of Relativity and Quantum Theory

The special theory of relativity does not predict the existence of photons (quanta of electromagnetic radiation). However, it is demonstrated here that it follows from the special theory of relativity that if photons do exist---and we know that they do---then their energy must be proportional to their frequency. This means that the Planck-Einstein formula E=hν follows just from some results of the special theory of relativity and the assumption of the particle--wave duality.

Prediction of the dynamic oscillation threshold in a clarinet model with a linearly increasing blowing pressure

Reed instruments are modeled as self-sustained oscillators driven by the pressure inside the mouth of the musician. A set of nonlinear equations connects the control parameters (mouth pressure, lip force) to the system output, hereby considered as the mouthpiece pressure. Clarinets can then be studied as dynamical systems, their steady behavior being dictated uniquely by the values of the control parameters. Considering the resonator as a lossless straight cylinder is a dramatic yet common simplification that allows for simulations using nonlinear iterative maps. In this paper, we investigate analytically the effect of a time-varying blowing pressure on the behavior of this simplified clarinet model. When the control parameter varies, results from the so-called dynamic bifurcation theory are required to properly analyze the system. This study highlights the phenomenon of bifurcation delay and defines a new quantity, the dynamic oscillation threshold. A theoretical estimation of the dynamic oscillation threshold is proposed and compared with numerical simulations.

Measurement of the beauty of periodic noises

In this article indicators to describe the "beauty" of noises are proposed. Rhythmic, tonal and harmonic suavity are introduced. They give a characterization of a noise in terms of rhythmic regularity (rhythmic suavity), of auditory pleasure of the "chords" constituting the signal (tonal suavity) and of the transition between the chords (harmonic suavity). These indicators have been developed for periodic noises typically issued from rotating machines such as engines, compressors... and are now used by our industrial customers since two years.
