Inflation and Unification

Two distinct classes of realistic inflationary models consistent with present observations are reviewed. The first example relies on the Coleman-Weinberg potential and is readily realized within the framework of spontaneously broken global symmetries (for instance, global U(1)_B-L). Depending on the parameters either new or large field inflation is possible. The second example exploits supersymmetry which makes implementation of inflation within local gauge theories much more accessible. An example based on spontaneously broken local U(1)_B-L is discussed. Leptogenesis is naturally realized in both cases.

Profile of Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model Parameter Space

We review recent work on constraining the parameter space of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model by theoretical and experimental results. Some characteristics of the model, in particular the distribution of masses in the surviving parameter space, are discussed.

Critical structure of the QCD medium

Fluctuations in the vicinity of a phase transition are important but neglected in mean-field theory. In order to assess the influence of such fluctuations on the critical endpoint and the size of the critical region in the QCD phase diagram, a mean-field calculation of a two-flavor quark-meson model is compared with a renormalization group approach. However, due to the lack of confinement in this effective model the equation of state near the chiral phase transition is still unrealistic. A first improvement of this model can be achieved by coupling quark degrees of freedom to the Polyakov loop, consequently incorporating certain aspects of confinement. The influence of these modifications on the resulting phase diagram is discussed.

Electroweak Model Without A Higgs Particle

An electroweak model is formulated in a finite, four-dimensional quantum field theory without a Higgs particle. The W and Z masses are induced from the electroweak symmetry breaking of one-loop vacuum polarization graphs. The theory contains only the observed particle spectrum of the standard model. In terms of the observed twelve lepton and quark masses, a loop calculation of the non-local electroweak energy scale $Λ_W$ and $ρ$ predicts the values $Λ_W(M_Z)=541$ GeV and $ρ(M_Z)=0.993$, yielding $s^2_Z\equiv\sin^2θ_W(M_Z)=0.21686\pm 0.00097$. Possible ways to detect a non-local signal in scattering amplitudes involving loop graphs at the LHC are discussed. Fermion masses are generated from a ``mass gap'' equation obtained from the lowest order, finite fermion self-energy with a broken symmetry vacuum state. The cross section for $W_L^+ W_L^-\to W_L^+ W_L^-$ is predicted to vanish for $\sqrt{s} > {1 \rm TeV}$, avoiding a violation of the unitarity bound. The Brookhaven National Laboratory measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the residual difference between the measured value and the standard model can provide a test of a non-local deviation from the standard model.

Lepton Flavor Violation in the LHT - A Clear Distinction from Supersymmetry

The Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity (LHT) contains new sources of flavor and CP violation both in the quark and lepton sector. These have their origin in interactions of ordinary fermions with mirror fermions mediated by new heavy gauge bosons. Large deviations from the Standard Model (SM) are to be expected in the lepton sector where tiny neutrino masses suppress the SM predictions by many orders of magnitude below the experimentally accessible level. Here we give a brief summary of LFV processes relevant for the foreseeable future and point out that correlations between branching ratios of LFV decays in the LHT exhibit a structure vastly different from their analogues in the MSSM, thus allowing for a transparent distinction between these two models.

Higgs mechanism in five-dimensional gauge theories

Lattice simulations of five-dimensional gauge theories on an orbifold revealed that there is spontaneous symmetry breaking. Some of the extra-dimensional components of the gauge field play the role of a Higgs field and some of the four-dimensional components become massive gauge bosons. The effect is confirmed by computing the Coleman-Weinberg potential with a cutoff. We compare the results of this computation with the lattice data.

Worldline Approach to Chiral Fermions

We propose to apply ``worldline numerics'' to a numerical calculation of quark determinants. The Gross-Neveu model with a U(1) chiral symmetry is considered as a first test. The worldline approach allows for an analytic renormalisation, and only finite parts of the determinant require a numerical calculation. It is shown that the discretisation of the worldlines, which is central to the numerical treatment, preserves chiral symmetry exactly. Numerical results for a kink configuration as a scalar background field are shown and compared with analytical results. The case of finite fermion chemical potential is also briefly discussed.

Pseudo-scalar meson form factors with maximally twisted Wilson fermions at Nf = 2

We present preliminary results for various electroweak form factors of pseudo-scalar mesons using the tree-level improved Symanzik gauge action and the maximally twisted mass fermionic action with Nf = 2 dynamical flavors. Our results, obtained for both light and heavy quark masses at a single lattice spacing (a ~ 0.09 fm) and at a single lattice volume (V * T = 24**3 * 48), exhibit a quite remarkable statistical precision thanks to the use of all-to-all quark propagators computed with a stochastic method. Moreover very low values of the four-momentum transfer are achieved by making use of twisted boundary conditions on the valence quark fields. The mass dependence of the pion charge radius is analyzed using Chiral Perturbation Theory, obtaining clear evidence of relevant two-loop contributions. The universal Isgur-Wise function is computed from heavy-to-heavy electromagnetic transitions and its slope in the case of $u(d)$ spectator quarks is found to be rho(IW)**2 = 0.77 +/- 0.28, where the error is statistical only.

Charm Mixing - Theory

We discuss Standard Model (SM) and New Physics (NP) descriptions of D0 mixing. The SM part of the discussion addresses both quark level and hadron level contributions. The NP part describes our recent works on the rate difference Delta Gamma_D and the mass difference Delta M_D. In particular, we describe how the recent experimental determination of Delta M_D is found to place tightened restrictions on parameter spaces for 17 of 21 NP models considered in a recent paper by Hewett, Pakvasa, Petrov and myself.

Implementation of non-linear gauge-fixing in FeynArts package

Feynman rules for the Standard Model including non-linear gauges are derived and implemented in the FeynArts package. The calculations using FeynArts with the new rules show that tree-level amplitudes are gauge invariant and that renormalization is not spoiled for one-loop calculations. The FeynArts model files are available at http://www.fi.lt/~garfield/SM/

Double Parton Scattering in Associate Higgs Boson Production with Bottom Quarks at Hadron Colliders

Higgs boson production in association with bottom quarks, is one of the most important discovery channels for Higgs particles in the Standard Model (SM) and its supersymmetric extension at the LHC pp collider . The theoretical prediction of the corresponding cross section has been improved by including the complete next-to-leading order QCD corrections. We review the status results for the leading order to the partonic process and present calculations for the integrated cross-section in both single and double parton scattering collisions.

On-shell renormalisation constants including two different nonzero masses

We present results for the effect of a second massive quark in the relation between the pole and the minimal subtracted quark mass at the three loop level. We also consider the analogous effect for the wave function renormalisation constant. Some technical details of the calculation are given. Our result is phenomenologically relevant for the bottom quark including virtual charm effects.

Hamiltonian approach to Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills Theory

The vacuum wave functional of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is determined within the variational principle and used to calculate various Green functions and observables. The results show that heavy quarks are confined by a linearly rising potential and gluons cannot propagate over large distances. The 't Hooft loop shows a perimeter law and thus also indicates confinement.

Spontaneous P-parity violation in dense baryon matter

We investigate possibilities for dynamical P-parity violation in dense baryon matter in the framework of effective quark models. Dynamical P-parity violation can appear in models with at least two scalar and two pseudoscalar fields, where both scalar fields are condensed at normal conditions. At special configurations of coupling constants, one of pseudoscalar fields can then also condense at some value of baryon density, the phenomenon results in mixing of the scalar and pseudoscalar physical degrees of freedom, hence, giving rise to P-parity violation. We discuss the implications and possible experimental signatures for P-parity violation in strong interactions in future experiments with heavy-ion collisions.

Screening at finite temperature and density

We present lattice QCD results on heavy quark free energies, extract from its temperature dependence entropy and internal energy contributions, and discuss the onset of medium effects that lead to screening of static quark-antiquark sources in a thermal medium. Most results are obtained in (2+1)-flavour QCD on a line of constant physics with almost realistic quark masses and compared to previous results from 2-flavor QCD as well as pure gauge theory. Furthermore, we discuss results on the density dependence of screening masses that have been obtained using a leading order Taylor expansion in the baryon chemical potential.

On the chemical freeze-out criteria in a hot and dense fireball

Intensive investigations of freeze-out criteria in a hot and dense fireball provide important information regarding particle emission from the fireball. A systematic comparison of these proposals is presented here in the framework of a thermodynamically consistent excluded volume model which has been found to describe the properties of hadron gas (HG) quite well. We find that the impact of excluded volume correction is considerably large and the average energy per hadron is 0.9 GeV, $n_b+n_{\bar b}$ stays nearly constant at 0.12/fm$^3$ and the normalized entropy density $s/T^3\approx 6$ in this model. Moreover, these values are independent of the beam or center-of-mass energy and also of the target and beam nuclei. In ideal HG model these quantities show substantial energy dependence. Further we have compared the predictions of various excluded volume models in the precise determination of these criteria and we find that the thermodynamically consistent excluded volume models give the best results. In addition, we find another important criterion that entropy per hadron has a constant value at 6 in our model. We hope that these findings will throw considerable light on the expansion dynamics and the bulk thermodynamic properties of the fireball before chemical freeze-out.

Chiral Analysis of the Generalized Form Factors of the Nucleon

We apply the methods of Chiral Perturbation Theory to the analysis of the first moments of the Generalized Parton Distributions in a Nucleon, usually known as generalized form factors. These quantities are currently also under investigation in Lattice QCD analyses of baryon structure, providing simulation results at large quark masses to be extrapolated to the "real world" via Chiral Effective Field Theory. We have performed a leading-one-loop calculation in the covariant framework of Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory (BChPT), predicting both the momentum and the quark-mass dependence for all the vector and axial (generalized) form factors. In particular we discuss the results for the limit of vanishing four-momentum transfer where the GPD-moments reduce to the well known moments of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). We fit our results to available lattice QCD data, extrapolating down to the physical point. We conclude by presenting outstanding results from a combined fit to different GPDs-moments.
