Spectroscopic characterization of magnetoplasmonic nanodisk array: size, shape and lattice constant

Magneto optical activity implemented in plasmonic nanostructures provides a new functionality in active plasmonics. To what an extent, one can benefit from this new degree of freedom is still under open discussion. In this work, with the development of a wavelength parallel characterization tool for measuring the optic and MO properties of nanostructures, we present systematic studies of the magneto-optical activity of Au/[Co/Pt]n/Au nanodisk array with various of disk size, shape and grating constant.

Ultrastrong and Ultrastable Metallic Glass

The lack of thermal stability, originating from their metastable nature, has been one of the paramount obstacles that hinder the wide range of applications of metallic glasses. We report that the stability of a metallic glass can be dramatically improved by slow deposition at high temperatures. The glass transition and crystallization temperatures of the ultrastable metallic glass can be increased by 51 K and 203 K, respectively, from its ordinary glass state. The ultrastable metallic glass also shows ultrahigh strength and hardness, over 30 % higher than its ordinary counterpart. Atomic structure characterization reveals that the exceptional properties of the ultrastable glass are associated with abundance of medium range order. The finding of the ultrastable metallic glass sheds light on atomic mechanisms of metallic glass formation and has important impact on the technological applications of metallic glasses.

Creating high density ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy centers in nitrogen-rich type Ib nanodiamonds

This work explores the possibility of increasing the density of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centers [NV-] in nanodiamonds using nitrogen-rich type Ib diamond powders as the starting materials. The nanodiamonds (10 - 100 nm in diameters) were prepared by ball-milling of microdiamonds, in which the density of neutral and automatically dispersed nitrogen atoms [N0] was measured by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT). A systematic measurement for the fluorescence intensities and lifetimes of the crushed monocrystalline diamonds as a function of [N0] indicated that the [NV-] increases nearly linearly with [N0] at 100 - 200 ppm. The trend, however, failed to continue for nanodiamonds with higher [N0] (up to 390 ppm) but poorer crystallinity. We attribute the result to a combined effect of fluorescence quenching as well as the lower conversion efficiency of vacancies to NV- due to the presence of more impurities and defects in these as-grown diamond crystallites. The principles and practice of fabricating brighter and smaller fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) are discussed.

New Views of Crystal Symmetry

Already Hermann Grassmann's father Justus (1829, 1830) published two works on the geometrical description of crystals, influenced by the earlier works of C.S. Weiss (1780-1856) on three main crystal forces governing crystal formation. In his 1840 essay on the derivation of crystal shapes from the general law of crystal formation Hermann established the notion of a three-dimensional vectorial system of forces with rational coefficients, that represent the interior crystal structure, regulate its formation, its shape and physical behavior. In the Ausdehnungslehre 1844 (Paragraph 171) he finally writes: I shall conclude this presentation by one of the most beautiful applications which can be made of the science treated, i.e. the application to crystal figures (Scholz, 1996). The geometry of crystals thus certainly influenced the Ausdehnungslehre. In this paper we see how Grassmann's work influenced Clifford's creation of geometric algebras, which in turn leads to a new geometric description of crystal symmetry suitable for modern computer algebra graphics.

Spontaneous evolution of self-assembled phases from anisotropic colloidal dispersions

We investigate the spontaneous evolution of various self-assembled phase states from a homogeneous aqueous dispersion of high-aspect ratio Montmorillonite (Na Cloisite) nanoclay platelets grounded on the observations made over a period of 3.5 years. We have established the tw-c phase diagram for this system for the first time in salt-free suspensions under normal pH conditions using rheology experiments and have detected that these suspensions do undergo nontrivial phase evolution and aging dynamics. Distinctive phase separation, equilibrium fluid and equilibrium gels in the tw-c phase space are discovered. Cole-Cole plots derived from rheology measurements suggested the presence of inter connected network-like structures for c > cg, cg being the gelation concentration. All dispersions formed stable sols during the initial time, and with aging network-like structures were found to form via two routes: one for c < cg, by phase separation and another for c > cg, through equilibrium gelation. This has invoked and called for a revisit of the phase diagram of aging MMT dispersions.

Spin-Chiral Bulk Fermi Surfaces of BiTeI Proven by Quantum Oscillations

We present the Fermi-surface map of the spin-chiral bulk states for the non-centrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI using de Haas-van Alphen and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. We identify two distinct Fermi surfaces with a unique spindle-torus-type topology and the non-trivial Berry phases, confirming the spin chirality with oppositely circulating spin-texture. Near the quantum limit at high magnetic fields, we find a substantial Zeeman effect with an effective g-factor of ~ 60 for the Rashba-split Fermi surfaces. These findings provide clear evidence of strong Rashba and Zeeman coupling in the bulk states of BiTeI, suggesting that BiTeI is a good platform hosting the spin-polarized chiral states.

B2O3 glass former as a molecular matter revealed by heat capacity

Heat capacity of B2O3 glass former in a wide temperature region is described well with the intrinsic motions for non-spherical B2O3 molecules, revealing that rather than a conventional network glass former, B2O3 is a typical molecular matter in which the transition from liquid to glass in the system corresponds to the frozen of translational motions for molecules. The finding might provide an opportunity to understand the mysterious glass transition, as well as the intrinsic difference between solids and liquids.

Anisometric Charge Dependent Swelling of Porous Carbon in an Ionic Liquid

In situ electrochemical dilatometry was used to study, for the first time, the expansion behavior of a porous carbon electrode in a pure ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium-tetrafluoroborate. For a single electrode, an applied potential of -2 V and +2 V against the potential of zero charge resulted in maximum strain of 1.8 % and 0.5 %, respectively. During cyclic voltammetry, the characteristic expansion behavior strongly depends on the scan rate, with increased scan rates leading to a decrease of the expansion. Chronoamperometry was used to determine the equilibrium specific capacitance and expansion. The obtained strain versus accumulated charge relationship can be fitted with a simple quadratic function. Cathodic and anodic expansion data collapses on one parabola when normalizing the surface charge by the ratio of ion volume and average pore size. There is also a transient spike in the height change when polarity is switched from positive to negative that is not observed when changing the potential from negative to positive indicating the size and the shape of the ion is influencing the expansion behavior.

Angular Preisach analysis of Hysteresis loops and FMR lineshapes of ferromagnetic nanowire arrays

Preisach analysis is applied to the study of hysteresis loops measured for different angles between the applied magnetic field and the common axis of ferromagnetic Nickel nanowire arrays. When extended to Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) lineshapes, with same set of parameters extracted from the corresponding hysteresis loops, Preisach analysis shows that a different distribution of interactions or coercivities ought to be used in order to explain experimental results. Inspecting the behavior of hysteresis loops and FMR linewidth versus field angle, we infer that angular dependence might be exploited in angle sensing devices that could compete with Anisotropic (AMR) or Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) based devices.

Electronic structure and charge transfer excited states of a multichromophoric antenna

The electronic structure of a multichromophoric molecular complex containing two of each borondipyrromethane dye, Zn-tetraphenyl-porphyrin, bisphenyl anthracene and a fullerene are studied using density functional theory. The snowflake shaped molecule behaves like an antenna capturing photon at different frequencies and transferring the photon energy to the porphyrin where electron transfer occurs from the porphyrin to the fullerene. Molecular structure of this large complex is first optimized using plane wave projector augmented wave methodology. Subsequent electronic structure calculations are performed using the real space methodology using an all electron pseudopotential basis set containing total of 12478 basis functions. The results show that the HOMO and a state below the HOMO are primarily localized on one of the porphyrins while the LUMO resides mainly on the fullerene component of the complex. The energies of the HOMO and LUMO states in the complex, as adjudged by the ionization potential and the electron affinity values, show significant differences with respect to their values in participating subunits in isolation. We have systematically examined the effect of structural strain and the presence of ligands on the ionization energy and the electron affinity. Finally, we have calculated a few lowest charge transfer energies involving electronic transitions from a the porphyrin component to the fullerene subunit of the complex using the perturbative delta-SCF method. Our predicted value of the lowest charge transfer excited state (1.67 eV) is comparable to the experimental estimate of the charge transfer energy of a similar complex.

Electron transport across a metal-organic interface

We simulate the electron transport across the Au(111)-pentacene interface using non-equilibrium Green's functions and density-functional theory (NEGF-DFT), and calculate the bias-dependent electron transmission. We find that the electrical contact resistance is dominated by the formation of a Schottky barrier at the interface, and show that the conventional semiconductor transport models across Schottky barriers need to be modified in order to describe the simulation data. We present an extension of the conventional Schottky barrier transport model, which can describe our simulation results and rationalize recent experimental data.

Fundamental Fracture Mechanics Equation of Material

On the basis of energy conservation law an without utilizing Linear Fracture Mechanics (LFM) postulates the equation of a real-structure material elastic-plastic fracture has been derived. With the help of this equation the force and energy criteria of Non-linear Fracture Mechanics (NLFM) have been found. These criteria constitute the basis of modern strength analysis of machineparts and structures made of real-structure materials. $K_{lc}$ dependence on ultimate strength limit, yield limit and impact toughness has been established and experimentally confirmed for a number of steels

Biologically inspired graphene-chlorophyll phototransistors with high gain

We present prominent photoresponse of bio-inspired graphene-based phototransistors sensitized with chlorophyll molecules. The hybrid graphene-chlorophyll phototransistors exhibit a high gain of 10^6 electrons per photon and a high responsivity of 10^6 A/W, which can be attributed to the integration of high-mobility graphene and the photosensitive chlorophyll molecules. The charge transfer at interface and the photogating effect in the chlorophyll layer can account for the observed photoresponse of the hybrid devices, which is confirmed by the back-gate-tunable photocurrent as well as the thickness and time dependent studies of the photoresponse. The demonstration of the graphene-chlorophyll phototransistors with high gain envisions a viable method to employ biomaterials for graphene-based optoelectronics.

Room temperature multiferroism in CaTcO$_3$ by interface engineering

The structural instabilities of ATcO$_3$(A= Ca, Sr, Ba) are investigated by first-principles calculations. In addiction to the large octahedral rotation instability, a weak ferroelectric tendency is identified in CaTcO$_3$. We show that the ferroelectricity in CaTcO$_3$ can be recovered by interface engineering based on CaTcO$_3$/BaTcO$_3$ superlattices, where the octahedral rotation is largely suppressed. The N{é}el temperature is found to be $\sim$ 816 K, indicating that CaTcO$_3$ can be engineered into a new room temperature multiferroic material.

Some features of anomalous conductivity of vinylene and vinyl chloride copolymer films

Manifestations of anomalous conductivity in polar dielectric films is demonstrated for the first time on samples of copolymer of vinylene and vinyl chloride, as was previously observed on modified PVC samples. On the base of these experimental results important new insights into the physical sense of traditionally used in these conditions specific resistivity indicators, both volume and surface, should be replaced by transverse and longitudinal resistance (according to polymer film surface) respectively, because the specific resistivity of polymer composite does not permits to calculate as usual the resistance of sample of arbitrary form..

Modification in structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of La and Nd co-substituted epitaxial BiFeO3 thin films

The influence of La and Nd co-substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films was examined. Epitaxial thin films of pure and, La and Nd co-doped BFO on the SrRuO3 buffered single crystal SrTiO3 (001) substrate were deposited using pulsed laser deposition. The structural change in co doped La and Nd BFO thin films which was caused by the changes of force constant in the crystal lattice induced by ionic radii mismatch was investigated. Raman spectroscopy studies manifest the structural change in doped BFO films from rhombohedral to monoclinic distorted phase which is induced by the co substitution of La and Nd. Room temperature magnetic hysteresis curves indicated that saturation magnetization is enhanced in the doped film with saturation magnetization of ~20 emu/cm3. The dielectric and magnetic properties are effectively improved in BLNFO films compared to pure BFO thin films.

Exactly solvable model of the ferroelectrics hysteresis loops control by the external electric field

The kinetic theory of switching processes in crystalline ferroelectric materials under the influence of a variable external electric field is formulated. The basic equations are derived and their exact analytical solution at arbitrary time-dependent external field are obtained. Connection between the hysteresis loops shape and variable external electric field parameters is investigated numerically. The numerical results were found to be in excellent agreement with the experiments. PACS: 77.80.Fm, 77.80.Dj, 77.80.-e Keywords: ferroelectrics, switching processes, hysteresis curves, polarization

Glassy magnetic behavior in the metamagnetic DyAlO3 doped with Cr

Magnetic properties of DyAl$_{0.926}$Cr$_{0.074}$O$_3$ and DyAlO$_3$ were studied. We found that both compounds are antiferromagnetic with a low Néel transition temperature. At higher temperatures the magnetic characteristics show a Curie-Weiss dependence. The Néel temperature disappears when a field of about 2 T is applied, the system changes from an antiferromagnetic to a weak ferromagnetic behavior due to a metamagnetic transition. Furthermore, AC magnetic measurements in the Cr doped compound, at different frequencies, show a spin glass-like behavior. These transitions were studied and corroborated by specific heat measurements. We found the presence of metamagnetism and spin glass in the compound doped with chromium, determining that the small addition of chromium atoms modifies the magnetic properties of the compound DyAlO$_3$, resulting in new features such as the spin glass-like behavior.
