New Linear Theory of Hydrodynamic Instability of the Hagen-Poiseuille Flow

New condition Re>Re_th_min=124 of linear (exponential) instability of the Hagen-Poisseuille (HP) with respect to extremely small by magnitude axially-symmetric disturbances of the tangential component of the velocity field is obtained. For this, disturbances must necessarily have quasi-periodic longitude variability (not representable as a Fourier series or integral) along the pipe axis that complies with experimental data and differs from the usually considered idealized case of pure periodic disturbances for which HP flow is stable for arbitrary large Reynolds numbers Re. Obtained minimal threshold Reynolds number is related to the spatial structure of disturbances (having two radial modes with non-commensurable longitudinal periods) in which irrational value p=1.58 of the ratio of the two longitudinal periods is close to the value of the "golden ratio" equal to 1.618.

Scaling Symmetry and Integrable Spherical Hydrostatics

Any symmetry reduces a second-order differential equation to a first integral: variational symmetries of the action (exemplified by central field dynamics) lead to conservation laws, but symmetries of only the equations of motion (exemplified by scale-invariant hydrostatics) yield first-order {\em non-conservation laws} between invariants. We obtain these non-conservation laws by extending Noether's Theorem to non-variational symmetries and present an innovative variational formulation of spherical adiabatic hydrostatics. For the scale-invariant case, this novel synthesis of group theory, hydrostatics, and astrophysics allows us to recover all the known properties of polytropes and define a {\em core radius}, inside which polytropes of index $n$ share a common core mass density structure, and outside of which their envelopes differ. The Emden solutions (regular solutions of the Lane-Emden equation) are obtained, along with useful approximations. An appendix discusses the $n=3$ polytrope in order to emphasize how the same mechanical structure allows different thermal structures in relativistic degenerate white dwarfs and zero age main sequence stars.

Spin reversal of a rattleback with viscous friction

Effective equation of motion of a rattleback is obtained from the basic equation of motion with viscous friction depending on slip velocity. This effective equation of motion is used to estimate the number of spin reversals and the rattleback shape that causes the maximum number of spin reversals. These estimates are compared with numerical simulations based on the basic equation of motion.

Improved Astable Multivibrator

The conventional two transistor astable multivibrator has been modified to produce better waveform which are more steeply rising and falling than those from the conventional astable. The improvement in the waveform is achieved by using a diode pair in each collector branch of the transistors. This restricts the direction of current flow for the charging and discharging of the timing capacitors. This article also derives the time period of oscillations for the modified circuit and discusses the limits on source and sink currents at the transistor collectors.

On the existence of natural self-oscillation of a free electron

The possibility of the existence of natural self-oscillation of a free electron is suggested. This oscillation depends on the interaction of the electron with its own electromagnetic fields. Suitable standing wave solutions of the electromagnetic fields are chosen. A kind of displacement dependent electric potential and mechanism of energy exchange between velocity and acceleration dependent electromagnetic fields are analyzed. Conditions for the existence of natural self-oscillation are given.

Radiation of the electron bunch moving in non-regular fields

The problem of spontaneous radiation of the electron bunch grazing into a charged metallic surface with randomly distributed needle shaped asperities is considered. Distances between two neighboring asperities have been described by gamma distribution. Being repealed by highly charged asperities the electrons of the bunch move along non-regular periodical trajectories in the planes parallel to the metallic surface. The spatial periods of the trajectories are random quantities which are described by the same gamma distribution. The radiation characteristics of the bunch have been obtained. It is shown that the angular distributions of the number of photons radiated from the bunch and from a single electron are the same but the frequency distribution of the bunch is being drastically changed at the hard frequency region. It is proposed to develop a new non-destructive method for investigation of the metal surface roughness. The frequency distribution of the number of photons radiated under the zero angle has been obtained. That allows to find the gain expression of the stimulated radiation.

Disciplinary Knots and Learning Problems in Waves Physics

An investigation on student understanding of waves is performed during an optional laboratory realized in informal extracurricular way with few, interested and talented pupils. The background and smart intuitions of students rendered the learning path very dynamic and ambitious. The activities started by investigating the basic properties of waves by means of a Shive wave machine. In order to make quantitative observed phenomena, the students used a camcorder and series of measures were obtained from the captured images. By checking the resulting data, it arose some learning difficulties especially in activities related to the laboratory. This experience was the starting point for a further analysis on disciplinary knots and learning problems in the physics of waves in order to elaborate a teaching-learning proposal on this topic.

Entropic considerations on the Two-Capacitor Problem

In the present work we study the well-known Two Capacitor Problem from a new perspective. Although this problem has been thoroughly investigated, as far as we know there are no studies of the thermodynamic aspects of the discharge process. We use the Free Electron Gas Model to describe the electrons' energy levels in both capacitors in the low temperature regime. We assume that the capacitors and the resistor can exchange energy freely with a heat reservoir. We assume that the resistance is large enough to consider an isothermal heat exchange between the resistor and the heat reservoir. Thereby we obtain a positive entropy variation due to the discharge process, corroborating its irreversibility.

Green's functions for Neumann boundary conditions

Green's functions for Neumann boundary conditions have been considered in Math Physics and Electromagnetism textbooks, but special constraints and other properties required for Neumann boundary conditions have generally not been noticed or treated correctly. In this paper, we derive an appropriate Neumann Green's function with these constraints and properties incorporated.

Semi-analytical and numerical methods for computing transient waves in 2D acoustic / poroelastic stratified media

Wave propagation in a stratified fluid / porous medium is studied here using analytical and numerical methods. The semi-analytical method is based on an exact stiffness matrix method coupled with a matrix conditioning procedure, preventing the occurrence of poorly conditioned numerical systems. Special attention is paid to calculating the Fourier integrals. The numerical method is based on a high order finite-difference time-domain scheme. Mesh refinement is applied near the interfaces to discretize the slow compressional diffusive wave predicted by Biot's theory. Lastly, an immersed interface method is used to discretize the boundary conditions. The numerical benchmarks are based on realistic soil parameters and on various degrees of hydraulic contact at the fluid / porous boundary. The time evolution of the acoustic pressure and the porous velocity is plotted in the case of one and four interfaces. The excellent level of agreement found to exist between the two approaches confirms the validity of both methods, which cross-checks them and provides useful tools for future researches.

X-Ray Propulsor: Physical Principle for an Electromagnetic Propellantless Propulsion System

In this work we are going to develop a physical model that explains how propulsion may be developed in a vacuum by the collision of electrons with an anode. Instead of using principles related to the conservation of only the mechanical momentum to achieve propulsion, like all the current propulsion systems do, the present system achieves propulsion by using principles related to the conservation of the canonical momentum. The complete physical model will be provided and comparison with preliminary experimental results will be performed. These results are important since they show that it is possible to achieve a radical different propulsion system with many advantages.

On the Relativistic Micro-Canonical Ensemble and Relativistic Kinetic Theory for N Relativistic Particles in Inertial and Non-Inertial Rest Frames

A new formulation of relativistic classical mechanics allows a revisiting of old unsolved problems in relativistic kinetic theory and in relativistic statistical mechanics. In particular a definition of the relativistic micro-canonical partition function is given strictly in terms of the Poincaré generators of an interacting N-particle system both in the inertial and non-inertial rest frames. The non-relativistic limit allows a definition of both the inertial and non-inertial micro-canonical ensemble strictly in terms of the Galilei generators. Also the one-particle relativistic distribution function is defined and a new approach to the relativistic Boltzmann equation is delineated. Finally there are some comments on relativistic dissipative fluids.

Relativity, GPS, and the Validity of Common View Synchronization

We show here that Common View Synchronization is valid to synchronize distant clocks. We describe the relativistic physics, noting that a prerequisite for synchronization is the existence of a space-time with a stationary metric. The analysis shows that there are no Special Relativistic effects that need be included in the synchronization method, beyond those in a standard GPS clock. In particular, synchronizing a ground clock to the GPS satellite does not make that clock keep time in the reference frame of the satellite. Symmetries are very helpful in analyzing the behavior. We briefly describe some practical considerations in synchronizing distant earth clocks, such as antenna cabling and variations in receiver electronics, and how Common View Synchronization accommodates them.

Meissner effect cannot be explained classically

The Meissner effect is an important characteristic of superconductivity and is critical to distinguishing superconductivity from simply the absence of electrical resistance (perfect conductivity). In a recent paper published in American Journal of Physics, Essén and Fiolhais claimed that the Meissner effect is explained by classical physics. [Am. J. Phys. {\textbf{80}} 164, (2012).] We claim it cannot be understood by classical mechanics and point out that their derivation of the Meissner effect by classical physics is based on an inadequate treatment of the magnetic field energy. A correct treatment of the magnetic field energy clarifies the need for quantum mechanics to understand the Meissner effect. We stress that Meissner effect is energetically favorable due to the energy of condensation of the Cooper pairs. The condensation of electrons into Cooper pairs is best understood as a quantum mechanical phenomenon.

Statistical extraction of process zones and representative subspaces in fracture of random composite

We propose to identify process zones in heterogeneous materials by tailored statistical tools. The process zone is redefined as the part of the structure where the random process cannot be correctly approximated in a low-dimensional deterministic space. Such a low-dimensional space is obtained by a spectral analysis performed on pre-computed solution samples. A greedy algorithm is proposed to identify both process zone and low-dimensional representative subspace for the solution in the complementary region. In addition to the novelty of the tools proposed in this paper for the analysis of localised phenomena, we show that the reduced space generated by the method is a valid basis for the construction of a reduced order model.

Coulomb's law in maximally symmetric spaces

We study the modifications to the Coulomb's law when the background geometry is a $n$-dimensional maximally symmetric space, by using of the $n$-dimensional version of the Gauss' theorem. It is shown that some extra terms are added to the usual expression of the Coulomb electric field due to the curvature of the background space. Also, we consider the problem of existence of magnetic monopoles in such spaces and present analytical expressions for the corresponding magnetic fields and vector potentials. We show that the quantization rule of the magnetic charges (if they exist) would be applicable to our study as well.

Entropy-based Tuning of Musical Instruments

The human sense of hearing perceives a combination of sounds 'in tune' if the corresponding harmonic spectra are correlated, meaning that the neuronal excitation pattern in the inner ear exhibits some kind of order. Based on this observation it is suggested that musical instruments such as pianos can be tuned by minimizing the Shannon entropy of suitably preprocessed Fourier spectra. This method reproduces not only the correct stretch curve but also similar pitch fluctuations as in the case of high-quality aural tuning.

Normal Collisions of Spheres: A Literature Survey on Available Experiments

The central collision between two solid spheres or the normal collision between a sphere and a plate are important to understand in detail before studying more complex particle interactions. Models exist to describe this basic problem but are not always consistent with available experiments. An interesting benchmark to compare models and experiments is the relation between the normal coefficient of restitution e and the incident velocity v. In order to draw a broad comparison between experiments and models (Krijt, S., Güttler, C., Heißelmann, D., Tielens, A.G.G.M., Dominik, C., Energy dissipation in head-on collisions of spheres, submitted), we provide in this article an overview on the literature describing experiments on normal collisions, preferably providing data on e(v). We will briefly summarize our expectation on this relation according to an established collision model in order to classify these experiments. We will then provide an overview on experimental techniques, which we found in the summarized articles, as well as a listing of all experiments along with a description of the main features of these. The raw data on e(v) of the listed experiments were digitized and are provided with this article.
