Neutrino spin-flavor oscillations in electromagnetic fields of various configurations

We study spin-flavor oscillations of Dirac neutrinos with mixing and having non-zero matrix of magnetic moments in magnetic fields of various configurations. We discuss constant transversal and twisting magnetic fields. To describe the dynamics of Dirac neutrinos we use relativistic quantum mechanics approach based on the exact solutions to the Dirac-Pauli equation in an external electromagnetic field. We derive transition probabilities for different neutrino magnetic moments matrices.

Why Tau First?

Electron neutrino has been the first neutral lepton to be foreseen and discovered last century. The un-ordered muon and its neutrino arose later by cosmic rays. The tau discover, the heaviest, the most unstable charged lepton, was found surprisingly on 1975. Its neutrino was hardly revealed just on 2000. So why High Energy Neutrino Astronomy should rise first via tau neutrino, the last, the most rare one? The reasons are based on a chain of three favorable coincidences found last decade: the neutrino masses and their flavor mixing, the UHECR opacity on Cosmic Black Body (GZK cut off on BBR), the amplified tau air-shower decaying in flight. Indeed guaranteed UHE GZK tau neutrinos, feed by muon mixing, while skimming the Earth might lead to boosted UHE tau, mostly horizontal ones. These UHE lepton decay in flight are spread, amplified, noise free Air-Shower: a huge event for an unique particle. To be observed soon: within Auger sky, in present decade. Its discover may sign of the first tau appearance.

Flavor Hierarchy Quadratic Rule and Dual Quark-Neutrino Mixing Patterns

Flavor physics is about particle mass-degeneracy-deviations (DMD) and mixing and especially about hierarchies of those deviations. On the one hand there is no established theory of particle flavor at present; on the other hand there are growing data indications on interesting empirical flavor regularities that are described here by two semi-empirical rules: quadratic DMD-hierarchy and Dirac-Majorana DMD-duality rules. First rule unites neutrino solar-atmospheric hierarchy parameter with charged lepton (CL) and quark mass-ratio hierarchies and simultaneously unites the hierarchies in the mixing matrices of quarks and neutrinos; the second rule predicts quasi-degenerate neutrinos from the fact of CL and quark large mass hierarchy and explains quark-neutrino complementarity mixing relations. The neutrino and quark mixing data seem very different, but it results that small deviations from maximal neutrino mixing are nearly equal to the small deviations from minimal mixing of quarks. Those deviations are quantitatively described by only one new small flavor parameter ~0.0067.

Evidence for evolution from pure states to mixed states in pion creation process pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n on polarized target and its physical interpretation

In 1982 Hawking suggested that quantum fluctuations of space-time metric will induce a non-unitary evolution from pure initial states to mixed final states in particle interactions at any energy. This hypothesis can be tested using existing CERN data on pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n on polarized target at 17.2 GeV/c. The purity of the final state is controlled by the purity of recoil nucleon polarization. We develop a spin formalism to calculate expressions for recoil nucleon polarization for two specific pure initial states. Imposing conditions of purity on the recoil nuclon polarization we obtain conditions on the amplitudes which are violated by model independent amplitude analysis of CERN data at large t. We conclude that pure states can evolve into mixed states in pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n. In quantum theory such non-unitary evolution occurs in open quantum systems interacting with an environment. We present evidence to validate the view of the pion creation process as an open quantum system interacting with a quantum environment. The observed process is time-irreversible and violates CPT symmetry.

Light Pseudoscalars in Little Higgs Models at the ILC

We discuss the properties of light pseudoscalar particles, the so-called pseudoaxions, within Little Higgs models, focusing on their phenomenology at the ILC. We especially discuss a method of how to distinguish between the two basic classes of Little Higgs models, the product and simple group models, by a specific production channel and decay mode. These are strictly forbidden in the product group models.

ILC Sensitivity on Generic New Physics in Quartic Gauge Couplings

We investigate the potential of the ILC for measuring anomalous quartic gauge couplings, both in production of three electroweak gauge bosons as well as in vector boson scattering. Any new physics that could possibly couple to the electroweak gauge bosons is classified according to its spin and isospin quantum numbers and parameterized in terms of resonance parameters like masses, widths, magnetic moment form factors etc. By a maximum log-likelihood fit, the discovery reach of a 1 TeV ILC for scalar, vector and tensor resonances is examined.

Off-Shell and Interference Effects for SUSY Particle Production

We show that the narrow-width approximation is insufficient for describing production of supersymmetric particles at the ILC. Especially when cuts are taken into account to extract signals using the narrow-width approximation can be wrong by an order of magnitude.

Research News -- Quantum Mechanical Entanglement and Tests of CPT Theorem with Neutral Mesons at e+ e- Colliders

We review the recent confirmation of quantum entanglement in e+ e- collisions at the BELLE experiment at KEK-B in Japan with neutral B- mesons, and at the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE in Italy with neutral K- mesons. Such effects in the latter system seen already in proton-antiproton collisions by the CPLEAR experiment are also reviewed for purposes of comparison. In addition, the KLOE experiment provides new tests of the CPT theorem and are briefly discussed.

Theoretical progress on the V_us determination from tau decays

A very precise determination of V_us can be obtained from the semi-inclusive hadronic decay width of the tau lepton into final states with strangeness. The ratio of the Cabibbo-suppressed and Cabibbo-allowed tau decay widths directly measures (V_us/V_ud)^2, up to very small SU(3)-breaking corrections which can be theoretically estimated with the needed accuracy. Together with previous LEP and CLEO data, the recent measurements by Babar and Belle of some Cabibbo-suppressed tau decays imply V_us= 0.2165 +- 0.0026_exp +- 0.0005_th, which is already competitive with the standard extraction from K_l3 decays. The uncertainty is largely dominated by experimental errors and should be easily reduced with the high statistics of the B factories, providing the most accurate determination of this parameter. A 1% experimental precision on the Cabibbo-suppressed tau decay width would translate into a 0.6% uncertainty on V_us.

Tools for NNLO QCD Calculations

For precision studies with QCD observables at colliders, higher order perturbative corrections are often mandatory. For exclusive observables, like jet cross sections or differential distributions, these corrections were until recently only known to next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbation theory. Owing to many new technical developments, first next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculations are now becoming available. We review the recent progress in this field.

The total cross section at the LHC

We do not have the ability to perform precise calculations of long-range strong interaction effects, because the effective QCD coupling is not small and so we cannot use perturbation theory. Nevertheless, I show that we know a lot, though not nearly enough. As a measure of our lack of knowledge, the best prediction for the total cross section at LHC energy is 125 +/- 25 mb.

Inhomogeneous preheating in multi-field models of cosmological perturbation

We consider inhomogeneous preheating in multi-field models of cosmological perturbation. After preheating, two fields are trapped at an enhanced symmetric point. One field is an oscillating field and the other is a light field that plays an important role in generating perturbation. In this presentation, we consider two types of potential for the light field.

rho0(770)-f0(980) mixing and CPT violation in a non-unitary evolution of pion creation process pi(-)p->pi(-)pi(+)n on polarized target

Unitary evolution from pure initial states to pure final states in pi(-)p-> pi(-)pi(+)n imposes constraints on pion production amplitudes that are violated by CERN data on polarized target at 17.2 GeV/c. The pion creation is a non-unitary process arising from a unitary co-evolution of the pion creation process with a quantum environment. The purpose of this work is to identify the interacting degrees of freedom of the environment in a high resolution amplitude analysis of CERN data on polarized target for dipion masses 580-1080 MeV. The S-wave spectra |S|^2 show presence of rho0(770) while P-wave spectra |L|^2 show a dip at f0(980) mass. The observed rho0(770)-f0(980) mixing is encoded in all measured density matrix elements which also encode a level splitting of the spectra arising from the interaction of the pion creation process with the environment. The analytical form of the level splitting reveals the existence of a new quantum number characterizing the environment. We propose a model for the CPT violating interaction of the pion creation process with the environment in which non-diagonal transitions between resonant qqbar modes and pi(-)pi(+) states lead to vector-scalar mixing and a dynamic entanglement of the pi(-)pi(+) isospin states. The final states pi(-)p(+)n do not posses CPT cojugate states and the concept of CPT symmetry looses its meanining.

Precise Numerical Evaluation of the Scalar One-Loop Integrals with the Infrared Divergence

We present a new approach for obtaining very precise integration results for infrared vertex and box diagrams, where the integration is carried out directly without performing any analytic integration of Feynman parameters. Using an appropriate numerical integration routine with an extrapolation method, together with a multi-precision library, we have obtained integration results which agree with the analytic results to 10 digits even for such a very small photon mass as $10^{-150}$ GeV in the infrared vertex diagram.

Stellar Photon and Blazar Archaeology with Gamma-rays

Ongoing deep surveys of galaxy luminosity functions, spectral energy distributions and backwards evolution models of star formation rates can be used to calculate the past history of intergalactic photon densities and, from them, the present and past optical depth of the universe. This procedure can be reversed by looking for sharp cutoffs in the spectra of extragalactic gamma-ray sources at high redshifts in the multi-GeV energy range with GLAST. Determining the cutoff energies of sources with known redshifts and little intrinsic absorption can enable a more precise determination of the past intergalactic photon density and thus allow a better determination of the past history of the total star formation rate, including that from galaxies too faint to be observed. Conversely, observations of sharp high energy cutoffs in the gamma-ray spectra of blazars at unknown redshifts can be used instead of spectral lines to give a measure of their redshifts. Also, given a knowledge photon densities, one can derive the intrinsic gamma-ray spectra and luminosities of blazars over a range of redshifts and look for possible trends in blazar evolution. I present some evidence hinting that TeV blazars with flatter spectra have higher intrinsic TeV gamma-ray luminosities and that there may be a correlation of flatness and luminosity with redshift. Identification of shallow two-body bound states in finite volume

We discuss signatures of bound-state formation in finite volume via the Luscher finite size method. Assuming that the phase-shift formula in this method inherits all aspects of the quantum scattering theory, we may expect that the bound-state formation induces the sign of the scattering length to be changed. If it were true, this fact provides us a distinctive identification of a shallow bound state even in finite volume through determination of whether the second lowest energy state appears just above the threshold. We also consider the bound-state pole condition in finite volume, based on Luscher's phase-shift formula and then find that the condition is fulfilled only in the infinite volume limit, but its modification by finite size corrections is exponentially suppressed by the spatial lattice size L. These theoretical considerations are also numerically checked through lattice simulations to calculate the positronium spectrum in compact scalar QED, where the short-range interaction between an electron and a positron is realized in the Higgs phase.
