Series-Expansion Thermal Tensor Network Approach for Quantum Lattice Models

In this work we propose a series-expansion thermal tensor network (SETTN) approach for efficient simulations of quantum lattice models. This continuous-time SETTN method is based on the numerically exact Taylor series expansion of equilibrium density operator $e^{-βH}$ (with $H$ the total Hamiltonian and $β$ the imaginary time), and is thus Trotter-error free. We discover, through simulating XXZ spin chain and square-lattice quantum Ising models, that not only the Hamiltonian $H$, but also its powers $H^n$, can be efficiently expressed as matrix product operators, which enables us to calculate with high precision the equilibrium and dynamical properties of quantum lattice models at finite temperatures. Our SETTN method provides an alternative to conventional Trotter-Suzuki renormalization group (RG) approaches, and achieves an unprecedented standard of thermal RG simulations in terms of accuracy and flexibility.

Criticality-Enhanced Magnetocaloric Effect in Quantum Spin Chain Material Copper Nitrate

Low-dimensional quantum magnets, due to the existence of abundant exotic quantum phases therein and experimental feasibilities in laboratories, continues intriguing people in condensed matter physics. In this work, a comprehensive study of Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$ $\cdot$ 2.5H$_2$O (copper nitrate hemipentahydrate, CN), a spin chain material, is performed with multi-technique approach including thermal tensor network (TTN) simulations, first-principles calculations, as well as magnetization measurements in experiments. Employing a cutting-edge TTN method developed in the present work, we determine the couplings $J=5.13$ K, $α=0.23(1)$ and Landé factors $g_{\parallel}=2.31$, $g_{\perp}=2.14$ in an alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain model, with which one can fit strikingly well the magnetothermodynamic properties. Part of the fitted experimental data are measured on the single-crystal CN specimens synthesized by us. Based on first-principles calculations, we reveal explicitly the spin chain scenario in CN by displaying the calculated electron density distributions, from which the distinct superexchange paths are visualized. On top of that, we investigated the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in CN by calculating its isentropes and magnetic Grüeisen parameter (GP). Prominent quantum-criticality-enhanced MCE was uncovered, the TTN simulations are in good agreements with measured isentropic lines in the sub-Kelvin region. We propose that CN is potentially a very promising quantum critical coolant, due to the remarkably enhanced MCE near both critical fields of moderate strengths as 2.87 and 4.08 T, respectively.

Topology-driven phase transitions in the classical monomer-dimer-loop model

In this work, we investigate the classical loop models doped with monomers and dimers on a square lattice, whose partition function can be expressed as a tensor network (TN). In the thermodynamic limit, we use the boundary matrix product state technique to contract the partition function TN, and determine the thermodynamic properties with high accuracy. In this monomer-dimer-loop model, we find a second-order phase transition between a trivial monomer-condensation and a loop-condensation (LC) phases, which can not be distinguished by any local order parameter, while nevertheless the two phases have distinct topological properties. In the LC phase, we find two degenerate dominating eigenvalues in the transfer-matrix spectrum, as well as a non-vanishing (nonlocal) string order parameter, both of which identify the \textit{topological ergodicity breaking} in the LC phase and can serve as the order parameter for detecting the phase transitions.

Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions and phase diagrams of the interacting monomer-dimer model on a checkerboard lattice

Using the tensor network approach, we investigate the monomer-dimer models on a checkerboard lattice, in which there are interactions (with strength $ν$) between the parallel dimers on half of the plaquettes. For the fully packed interacting dimer model, we observe a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition between the lowtemperature symmetry breaking and the high-temperature critical phases; for the doped monomer-dimer casewith finite chemical potential $μ$, we also find an order-disorder phase transition which is of second order instead. We use the boundary matrix product state approach to detect the KT and second-order phase transitions and obtain the phase diagrams $ν-T$ and $μ-T$ . Moreover, for the noninteracting monomer-dimer model (setting $μ= ν= 0$), we get an extraordinarily accurate determination of the free energy per site (negative of the monomer-dimer constant $h_2$) as $f=-0.662\, 798\, 972\, 833\, 746$ with the dimer density $n=0.638\, 123\, 109\, 228\, 547$, both of 15 correct digits.

Significance of self magnetic field in long-distance collimation of laser-generated electron beams

Long-distance collimation of fast electron beams generated by laser-metallic-wire targets has been observed in recent experiments, while the mechanism behind this phenomenon remains unclear. In this work, we investigate in detail the laser-wire interaction processes with a simplified model and Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate the significance of the self magnetic fields of the beams in the long-distance collimation. Good agreements of simulated image plate patterns with various experiments and detailed analysis of electron trajectories show that the self magnetic fields provide restoring force that is critical for the beam collimation. By studying the wire-length dependence of beam divergence in certain experiments, we clarify that the role of the metallic wire is to balance the space-charge effect and thus maintain the collimation.

Interaction effect in two-dimensional Dirac fermions

Based on the Dirac equations in the two-dimensional $π-$ flux model, we study the interaction effects both in nontrivial gapped and gapless Dirac equations with numerical exact diagonalization method. In the presence of the nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions: for nontrivial gapped Dirac equation, the topological phase is robust and persists in a finite region of the phase diagram; while for gapless Dirac equation, charge-density-wave and stripe phases are identified and the phase diagram in $(V_1, V_2)$ plane is obtained. When the next-next-nearest neighbor interaction is further included to gapless Dirac equation, the topological phase expected in the mean-field theory is absent. Our results are related to the possibility of dynamically generating topological phase from the electronic correlations.
