Blind Random Search with Noisy Loss Measurements: Averaging, Thresholding, and Almost Sure Convergence

Blind random search repeatedly draws a candidate point and replaces the current estimate whenever the candidate has a lower loss. In the absence of noise, the true loss is observed directly. It decreases strictly at every accepted update and is monotone nonincreasing over all iterations. Measurement noise can make a worse candidate appear better and thereby break this monotonicity. To recover almost sure convergence under noise, we incorporate averaging and thresholding into the original decision criterion. These two classical tools are coupled. As the sample sizes grow, the positive threshold shrinks at a matched rate. These modifications allow blind random search to recover eventual monotonicity of the true loss under noisy measurements and to converge almost surely.

Proof of bulk-edge correspondence for band topology by Toeplitz algebra

We rigorously yet concisely prove the bulk-edge correspondence for general $d$-dimensional ($d$D) topological insulators in complex Altland-Zirnbauer classes, which states that the bulk topological number equals to the edge-mode index. Specifically, an essential formula is discovered that links the quantity expressed by Toeplitz algebra, i.e., hopping terms on the lattice with an edge, to the Fourier series on the bulk Brillouin zone. We then apply it to chiral models and utilize exterior differential calculations, instead of the sophisticated \emph{K}-theory, to show that the winding number of bulk system equals to the Fredholm index of 1D edge Hamiltonian, or to the sum of edge winding numbers for higher odd dimensions. Moreover, this result is inherited to the even-dimensional Chern insulators as each of them can be mapped to an odd-dimensional chiral model. It is revealed that the Chern number of bulk system is identical to the spectral flow of 2D edge Hamiltonian, or to the negative sum of edge Chern numbers for higher even dimensions. Our methods and conclusions are friendly to physicists and could be easily extended to other physical scenarios.

Squeezing-induced Topological Gap Opening on Bosonic Bogoliubov Excitations

We investigate the role of squeezing interaction in inducing topological Bogoliubov excitations of a bosonic system. We introduce a squeezing transformation which is capable of reducing the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian to an effective non-interacting one with the spectra and topology unchanged. In the weak interaction limit, we apply the perturbation theory to investigate the squeezing-induced topological gap opening on bosonic Bogoliubov excitations and find that the squeezing interaction plays an equivalent role as a spin-orbit or Zeeman-like coupling in the effective Hamiltonian. We thus apply this formalism to two existed models for providing deeper understandings of their topological structures. We also construct minimal models based on the elegant Clifford algebra for realizing bosonic topological Bogoliubov excitations. Our construction is potentially applicable for experiments in bosonic systems.

Topological Classification of Excitations in Quadratic Bosonic Systems

We investigate the topological classification of excitations in quadratic bosonic systems with an excitation band gap. Time-reversal, charge-conjugation, and parity symmetries in bosonic systems are introduced to realize a ten-fold symmetry classification. We find a specific decomposition of the quadratic bosonic Hamiltonian and use it to prove that each quadratic bosonic system is homotopic to a direct sum of two single-particle subsystems. The topological classification table is thus derived via inheriting from that of Atland-Zirnbauer classes and unique topological phases of bosons are predicted. Finally, concrete topological models are proposed to demonstrate the peculiarity of bosonic excitations.

Proof of Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem by Canonical Quantum Mechanics

We show that the Atiyah-Singer index theorem of Dirac operator can be directly proved in the canonical formulation of quantum mechanics, without using the path-integral technique. This proof takes advantage of an algebraic isomorphism between Clifford algebra and exterior algebra in small $τ$ (high temperature) limit, together with simple properties of quantum mechanics of harmonic oscillator. Compared to the proof given by heat kernel, we try to prove this theorem more quantum mechanically.

Protecting coherence by reservoir engineering: intense bath disturbance

We put forward a scheme based on reservoir engineering to protect quantum coherence from leaking to bath, in which we intensely disturb the Lorentzian bath by N harmonic oscillators. We show that the intense disturbance changes the spectrum of the bath and reduces the qubit-bath interaction. Furthermore, we give the exact time evolution with the Lorentzian spectrum by a master equation, and calculate the concurrence and survival probability of the qubits to demonstrate the effect of the intense bath disturbance on the protection of coherence. Meanwhile, we reveal the dynamic effects of counter-rotating interaction on the qubits as compared to the results of the rotating wave approximation.

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in open quantum systems

Traditional approach on quantum Zeno effect (QZE) and quantum anti-Zeno effect (QAZE) in open quantum systems (implicitly) assumes the bath (environment) state returning to its original state after each instantaneous projective measurement on the system and thus ignores the cross-correlations of the bath operators between different Zeno intervals. However, this assumption is not generally true, especially for a bath with a considerably non-negligible memory effect and for a system repeatedly projected into an initial general superposition state. We find that in stark contrast to the result of a constant value found in the traditional approach, the scaled average decay rate in unit Zeno interval of the survival probability is generally time-dependent or has an oscillatory behavior. In the case of strong bath correlation, the transition between the QZE and QAZE depends sensitively on the number of measurements $N$. For a fixed $N$, a QZE region predicted by the tradition approach may be in fact already in the QAZE region. We illustrate our findings using an exactly solvable open qubit system model with a Lorentzian bath spectral density, which is directly related to realistic circuit cavity quantum electrodynamics systems. Thus the results and dynamics presented here can be verified by current superconducting circuit technology.

Topology-Induced Symmetry Breaking for Vortex with Artificial Monopole

We construct an artificial U(1) gauge field in the cold atom system to form a monopole along with vortices. It is supposed that the cold atoms are confined on a spherical surface, and two sets of identical laser beams in the opposite propagating directions shine on two sides of the sphere. Arbitrary Chern number CN, proportional to the quantized magnetic flux, can be obtained by selecting proper laser modes. This construction meets the condition of Chern's theorem, so that the vortices of the atom wave function will emerge on the sphere, whose winding number equals CN. It is found that a geometric symmetry is broken spontaneously for odd CN, which corresponds to a topology-induced quantum phase transition. In particular for CN=1, the ground state of the cold atoms are double-degenerate and can be applied to make a stable qubit. Since the ground-state degeneracy is protected by topology-induced symmetry breaking against dissipation, the proposed topological structure has vast potential in quantum storage.
