Edge General Intelligence Through World Models and Agentic AI: Fundamentals, Solutions, and Challenges

Edge General Intelligence (EGI) represents a transformative evolution of edge computing, where distributed agents possess the capability to perceive, reason, and act autonomously across diverse, dynamic environments. Central to this vision are world models, which act as proactive internal simulators that not only predict but also actively imagine future trajectories, reason under uncertainty, and plan multi-step actions with foresight. This proactive nature allows agents to anticipate potential outcomes and optimize decisions ahead of real-world interactions. While prior works in robotics and gaming have showcased the potential of world models, their integration into the wireless edge for EGI remains underexplored. This survey bridges this gap by offering a comprehensive analysis of how world models can empower agentic artificial intelligence (AI) systems at the edge. We first examine the architectural foundations of world models, including latent representation learning, dynamics modeling, and imagination-based planning. Building on these core capabilities, we illustrate their proactive applications across EGI scenarios such as vehicular networks, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks, the Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and network functions virtualization, thereby highlighting how they can enhance optimization under latency, energy, and privacy constraints. We then explore their synergy with foundation models and digital twins, positioning world models as the cognitive backbone of EGI. Finally, we highlight open challenges, such as safety guarantees, efficient training, and constrained deployment, and outline future research directions. This survey provides both a conceptual foundation and a practical roadmap for realizing the next generation of intelligent, autonomous edge systems.

Enhancing Mega-Satellite Networks with Generative Semantic Communication: A Networking Perspective

The advance of direct satellite-to-device communication has positioned mega-satellite constellations as a cornerstone of 6G wireless communication, enabling seamless global connectivity even in remote and underserved areas. However, spectrum scarcity and capacity constraints imposed by the Shannon's classical information theory remain significant challenges for supporting the massive data demands of multimedia-rich wireless applications. Generative Semantic Communication (GSC), powered by artificial intelligence-based generative foundation models, represents a paradigm shift from transmitting raw data to exchanging semantic meaning. GSC can not only reduce bandwidth consumption, but also enhance key semantic features in multimedia content, thereby offering a promising solution to overcome the limitations of traditional satellite communication systems. This article investigates the integration of GSC into mega-satellite constellations from a networking perspective. We propose a GSC-empowered satellite networking architecture and identify key enabling technologies, focusing on GSC-empowered network modeling and GSC-aware networking strategies. We construct a discrete temporal graph to model semantic encoders and decoders, distinct knowledge bases, and resource variations in mega-satellite networks. Based on this framework, we develop model deployment for semantic encoders and decoders and GSC-compatible routing schemes, and then present performance evaluations. Finally, we outline future research directions for advancing GSC-empowered satellite networks.

Remote ID Based UAV Collision Avoidance Optimization for Low-Altitude Airspace Safety

With the rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), it is paramount to ensure safe and efficient operations in open airspaces. The remote identification (Remote ID) is deemed an effective real-time UAV monitoring system by the federal aviation administration, which holds potentials for enabling inter-UAV communications. This paper deeply investigates the application of Remote ID for UAV collision avoidance while minimizing communication delays. First, we propose a Remote ID based distributed multi-UAV collision avoidance (DMUCA) framework to support the collision detection, avoidance decision-making, and trajectory recovery. Next, the average transmission delays for Remote ID messages are analyzed, incorporating the packet reception mechanisms and packet loss due to interference. The optimization problem is formulated to minimize the long-term average communication delay, where UAVs can flexibly select the Remote ID protocol to enhance the collision avoidance performance. To tackle the problem, we design a multi-agent deep Q-network based adaptive communication configuration algorithm, allowing UAVs to autonomously learn the optimal protocol configurations in dynamic environments. Finally, numerical results verify the feasibility of the proposed DMUCA framework, and the proposed mechanism can reduce the average delay by 32% compared to the fixed protocol configuration.

Quantum Hamiltonian Descent based Augmented Lagrangian Method for Constrained Nonconvex Nonlinear Optimization

Nonlinear programming (NLP) plays a critical role in domains such as power energy systems, chemical engineering, communication networks, and financial engineering. However, solving large-scale, nonconvex NLP problems remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of the solution landscape and the presence of nonlinear nonconvex constraints. In this paper, we develop a Quantum Hamiltonian Descent based Augmented Lagrange Method (QHD-ALM) framework to address largescale, constrained nonconvex NLP problems. The augmented Lagrange method (ALM) can convert a constrained NLP to an unconstrained NLP, which can be solved by using Quantum Hamiltonian Descent (QHD). To run the QHD on a classical machine, we propose to use the Simulated Bifurcation algorithm as the engine to simulate the dynamic process. We apply our algorithm to a Power-to-Hydrogen System, and the simulation results verify the effectiveness of our algorithm.

Learning to Incentivize: LLM-Empowered Contract for AIGC Offloading in Teleoperation

With the rapid growth in demand for AI-generated content (AIGC), edge AIGC service providers (ASPs) have become indispensable. However, designing incentive mechanisms that motivate ASPs to deliver high-quality AIGC services remains a challenge, especially in the presence of information asymmetry. In this paper, we address bonus design between a teleoperator and an edge ASP when the teleoperator cannot observe the ASP's private settings and chosen actions (diffusion steps). We formulate this as an online learning contract design problem and decompose it into two subproblems: ASP's settings inference and contract derivation. To tackle the NP-hard setting-inference subproblem with unknown variable sizes, we introduce a large language model (LLM)-empowered framework that iteratively refines a naive seed solver using the LLM's domain expertise. Upon obtaining the solution from the LLM-evolved solver, we directly address the contract derivation problem using convex optimization techniques and obtain a near-optimal contract. Simulation results on our Unity-based teleoperation platform show that our method boosts the teleoperator's utility by $5 \sim 40\%$ compared to benchmarks, while preserving positive incentives for the ASP. The code is available at https://github.com/Zijun0819/llm4contract.

Trusted Routing for Blockchain-Empowered UAV Networks via Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning

Due to the high flexibility and versatility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are leveraged in various fields including surveillance and disaster rescue. However, in UAV networks, routing is vulnerable to malicious damage due to distributed topologies and high dynamics. Hence, ensuring the routing security of UAV networks is challenging. In this paper, we characterize the routing process in a time-varying UAV network with malicious nodes. Specifically, we formulate the routing problem to minimize the total delay, which is an integer linear programming and intractable to solve. Then, to tackle the network security issue, a blockchain-based trust management mechanism (BTMM) is designed to dynamically evaluate trust values and identify low-trust UAVs. To improve traditional practical Byzantine fault tolerance algorithms in the blockchain, we propose a consensus UAV update mechanism. Besides, considering the local observability, the routing problem is reformulated into a decentralized partially observable Markov decision process. Further, a multi-agent double deep Q-network based routing algorithm is designed to minimize the total delay. Finally, simulations are conducted with attacked UAVs and numerical results show that the delay of the proposed mechanism decreases by 13.39$\%$, 12.74$\%$, and 16.6$\%$ than multi-agent proximal policy optimal algorithms, multi-agent deep Q-network algorithms, and methods without BTMM, respectively.

Real-Time Communication-Aware Ride-Sharing Route Planning for Urban Air Mobility: A Multi-Source Hybrid Attention Reinforcement Learning Approach

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) systems are rapidly emerging as promising solutions to alleviate urban congestion, with path planning becoming a key focus area. Unlike ground transportation, UAM trajectory planning has to prioritize communication quality for accurate location tracking in constantly changing environments to ensure safety. Meanwhile, a UAM system, serving as an air taxi, requires adaptive planning to respond to real-time passenger requests, especially in ride-sharing scenarios where passenger demands are unpredictable and dynamic. However, conventional trajectory planning strategies based on predefined routes lack the flexibility to meet varied passenger ride demands. To address these challenges, this work first proposes constructing a radio map to evaluate the communication quality of urban airspace. Building on this, we introduce a novel Multi-Source Hybrid Attention Reinforcement Learning (MSHA-RL) framework for the challenge of effectively focusing on passengers and UAM locations, which arises from the significant dimensional disparity between the representations. This model first generates the alignment among diverse data sources with large gap dimensions before employing hybrid attention to balance global and local insights, thereby facilitating responsive, real-time path planning. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the approach enables communication-compliant trajectory planning, reducing travel time and enhancing operational efficiency while prioritizing passenger safety.

Age of Information Minimization in UAV-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) capabilities are envisioned to play a pivotal role in future wireless networks due to their enhanced flexibility and efficiency. However, jointly optimizing UAV trajectory planning, multi-user communication, and target sensing under stringent resource constraints and time-critical conditions remains a significant challenge. To address this, we propose an Age of Information (AoI)-centric UAV-ISAC system that simultaneously performs target sensing and serves multiple ground users, emphasizing information freshness as the core performance metric. We formulate a long-term average AoI minimization problem that jointly optimizes the UAV's flight trajectory and beamforming. To tackle the high-dimensional, non-convexity of this problem, we develop a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based algorithm capable of providing real-time decisions on UAV movement and beamforming for both radar sensing and multi-user communication. Specifically, a Kalman filter is employed for accurate target state prediction, regularized zero-forcing is utilized to mitigate inter-user interference, and the Soft Actor-Critic algorithm is applied for training the DRL agent on continuous actions. The proposed framework adaptively balances the trade-offs between sensing accuracy and communication quality. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our proposed method consistently achieves lower average AoI compared to baseline approaches.

Backscatter Device-aided Integrated Sensing and Communication: A Pareto Optimization Framework

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems potentially encounter significant performance degradation in densely obstructed urban and non-line-of-sight scenarios, thus limiting their effectiveness in practical deployments. To deal with these challenges, this paper proposes a backscatter device (BD)-assisted ISAC system, which leverages passive BDs naturally distributed in underlying environments for performance enhancement. These ambient devices can enhance sensing accuracy and communication reliability by providing additional reflective signal paths. In this system, we define the Pareto boundary characterizing the trade-off between sensing mutual information (SMI) and communication rates to provide fundamental insights for its design. To derive the boundary, we formulate a performance optimization problem within an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) framework, by jointly optimizing time-frequency resource element (RE) allocation, transmit power management, and BD modulation decisions. To tackle the non-convexity of the problem, we decompose it into three subproblems, solved iteratively through a block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm. Specifically, the RE subproblem is addressed using the successive convex approximation (SCA) method, the power subproblem is solved using an augmented Lagrangian combined water-filling method, and the BD modulation subproblem is tackled using semidefinite relaxation (SDR) methods. Additionally, we demonstrate the generality of the proposed system by showing its adaptability to bistatic ISAC scenarios and MIMO settings. Finally, extensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed system and its superior performance compared to existing state-of-the-art ISAC schemes.

UAV-Assisted Integrated Communication and Over-the-Air Computation with Interference Awareness

Over the air computation (AirComp) is a promising technique that addresses big data collection and fast wireless data aggregation. However, in a network where wireless communication and AirComp coexist, mutual interference becomes a critical challenge. In this paper, we propose to employ an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to enable integrated communication and AirComp, where we capitalize on UAV mobility with alleviated interference for performance enhancement. Particularly, we aim to maximize the sum of user transmission rate with the guaranteed AirComp accuracy requirement, where we jointly optimize the transmission strategy, signal normalizing factor, scheduling strategy, and UAV trajectory. We decouple the formulated problem into two layers where the outer layer is for UAV trajectory and scheduling, and the inner layer is for transmission and computation. Then, we solve the inner layer problem through alternating optimization, and the outer layer is solved through soft actor critic based deep reinforcement learning. Simulation results show the convergence of the proposed learning process and also demonstrate the performance superiority of our proposal as compared with the baselines in various situations.

QoE Maximization for Multiple-UAV-Assisted Multi-Access Edge Computing via an Online Joint Optimization Approach

In disaster scenarios, conventional terrestrial multi-access edge computing (MEC) paradigms, which rely on ground infrastructure, may become unavailable due to infrastructure damage. With high-probability line-of-sight (LoS) communication, flexible mobility, and low cost, uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted MEC is emerging as a promising paradigm to provide edge computing services for ground user devices (UDs) in disaster-stricken areas. However, the limited battery capacity, computing resources, and spectrum resources also pose serious challenges for UAV-assisted MEC, which can potentially shorten the service time of UAVs and degrade the quality of experience (QoE) of UDs without an effective control approach. To this end, in this work, we first present a hierarchical architecture of multiple-UAV-assisted MEC networks that enables the coordinated provision of edge computing services by multiple UAVs. Then, we formulate a joint task offloading, resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control optimization problem (JTRTOP) to maximize the QoE of UDs while considering the energy and resource constraints of UAVs. Since the problem is proven to be a future-dependent and NP-hard problem, we propose a novel online joint task offloading, resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control approach (OJTRTA) to solve the problem. Specifically, the JTRTOP is first transformed into a per-slot real-time optimization problem (PROP) using the Lyapunov optimization framework. Then, a two-stage optimization method based on game theory and convex optimization is proposed to solve the PROP. Simulation results show that the proposed OJTRTA outperforms various benchmark approaches and achieves at least a 10% improvement in the QoE of UDs compared to deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based algorithms, thereby validating the superiority of the proposed approach.

Flexible Intelligent Metasurface for Enhancing Multi-Target Wireless Sensing

Flexible intelligent metasurface (FIM) has emerged as a transformative technology to enhance wireless sensing by dynamically morphing its three-dimensional (3D) surface shape and electromagnetic response. Unlike conventional rigid arrays, an FIM consists of low-cost radiating elements that can independently adjust their positions and radiation characteristics, thereby allowing for real-time optimization of the sensing environment. This paper investigates the impact of FIM on wireless sensing performance. Specifically, we focus on the maximization of the cumulated power of the probing signals at the target locations under the per-antenna power constraint by jointly optimizing the transmit covariance matrix and the surface shape of the transmitting FIM. We propose a block coordinate descend (BCD) algorithm to find a locally optimal solution, by alternatively updating the FIM surface shape and the transmit covariance matrix, while keeping the other one fixed at each step. Furthermore, we analyze the computational complexity and convergence properties of the proposed algorithm and demonstrate that FIM enhances wireless sensing by providing a new design degree-of-freedom to coordinate the correlation between steering vectors at different angles. Numerical results demonstrate that FIM significantly improves wireless sensing performance under the considered multi-target scenario.

Physical Layer Challenge-Response Authentication between Ambient Backscatter Devices

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) has become an integral part of ubiquitous Internet of Things (IoT) applications due to its energy-harvesting capabilities and ultra-low-power consumption. However, the open wireless environment exposes AmBC systems to various attacks, and existing authentication methods cannot be implemented between resource-constrained backscatter devices (BDs) due to their high computational demands. To this end, this paper proposes PLCRA-BD, a novel physical layer challenge-response authentication scheme between BDs in AmBC that overcomes BDs' limitations, supports high mobility, and performs robustly against impersonation and wireless attacks. It constructs embedded keys as physical layer fingerprints for lightweight identification and designs a joint transceiver that integrates BDs' backscatter waveform with receiver functionality to mitigate interference from ambient RF signals by exploiting repeated patterns in OFDM symbols. Based on this, a challenge-response authentication procedure is introduced to enable low-complexity fingerprint exchange between two paired BDs leveraging channel coherence, while securing the exchange process using a random number and unpredictable channel fading. Additionally, we optimize the authentication procedure for high-mobility scenarios, completing exchanges within the channel coherence time to minimize the impact of dynamic channel fluctuations. Security analysis confirms its resistance against impersonation, eavesdropping, replay, and counterfeiting attacks. Extensive simulations validate its effectiveness in resource-constrained BDs, demonstrating high authentication accuracy across diverse channel conditions, robustness against multiple wireless attacks, and superior efficiency compared to traditional authentication schemes.

A Tractable Approach to Massive Communication and Ubiquitous Connectivity in 6G Standardization

The full-scale 6G standardization has attracted considerable recent attention, especially since the first 3GPP-wide 6G workshop held in March 2025. To understand the practical and fundamental values of 6G and facilitate its standardization, it is crucial to explore the theoretical limits of spectrum, energy, and coverage efficiency considering practical hardware and signaling constraints. In this paper, we present a mean-field-approximation-based investigation on two out of six use case scenarios defined by IMT-2030, namely, massive communication and ubiquitous connectivity. Being aware of the limitation in interference cancellation owing to constrained cost and hardware complexity, we investigate the spectrum reuse architecture in both usage scenarios. We propose a tractable spectrum reuse with low signaling overhead consumed for channel estimation and channel state information (CSI) feedback. Our analysis indicates that the massive communication over cellular and device-to-device (D2D) networks can benefit from channel orthogonalization, while it is unnecessary to share the CSI of interfering links. Moreover, deploying relays or movable base stations, e.g. unmanned aerial vehicle, yields substantial energy and spectrum gain for ubiquitous connectivity, despite introducing interference. As such, the mean-field-optimization-based evaluation is expected to positively impact 6G and NextG standardization in 3GPP and other standardization bodies.

Joint Computation Offloading and Resource Allocation for Uncertain Maritime MEC via Cooperation of UAVs and Vessels

The computation demands from the maritime Internet of Things (MIoT) increase rapidly in recent years, and the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and vessels based multi-access edge computing (MEC) can fulfill these MIoT requirements. However, the uncertain maritime tasks present significant challenges of inefficient computation offloading and resource allocation. In this paper, we focus on the maritime computation offloading and resource allocation through the cooperation of UAVs and vessels, with consideration of uncertain tasks. Specifically, we propose a cooperative MEC framework for computation offloading and resource allocation, including MIoT devices, UAVs and vessels. Then, we formulate the optimization problem to minimize the total execution time. As for the uncertain MIoT tasks, we leverage Lyapunov optimization to tackle the unpredictable task arrivals and varying computational resource availability. By converting the long-term constraints into short-term constraints, we obtain a set of small-scale optimization problems. Further, considering the heterogeneity of actions and resources of UAVs and vessels, we reformulate the small-scale optimization problem into a Markov game (MG). Moreover, a heterogeneous-agent soft actor-critic is proposed to sequentially update various neural networks and effectively solve the MG problem. Finally, simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness in addressing computational offloading and resource allocation.

A Reliable Vertical Federated Learning Framework for Traffic State Estimation with Data Selection and Incentive Mechanisms

Vertical Federated Learning (VFL)-based Traffic State Estimation (TSE) offers a promising approach for integrating vertically distributed traffic data from municipal authorities (MA) and mobility providers (MP) while safeguarding privacy. However, given the variations in MPs' data collection capabilities and the potential for MPs to underperform in data provision, we propose a reliable VFL-based TSE framework that ensures model reliability during training and operation. The proposed framework comprises two components: data provider selection and incentive mechanism design. Data provider selection is conducted in three stages to identify the most qualified MPs for VFL model training with the MA. First, the MA partitions the transportation network into road segments. Then, a mutual information (MI) model is trained for each segment to capture the relationship between data and labels. Finally, using a sampling strategy and the MI model, the MA assesses each MP's competence in data provision and selects the most qualified MP for each segment. For the incentive mechanism design, given the MA can leverage the MI mode to inspect the data quality of MP, we formulate the interaction between MA and MP as a supervision game model. Upon this, we devise a penalty-based incentive mechanism to inhibit the lazy probability of MP, thereby guaranteeing the utility of MA. Numerical simulation on real-world datasets showcased that our proposed framework augments the traffic flow and density prediction accuracy by 11.23\% and 23.15\% and elevates the utility of MA by 130$\sim$400\$ compared to the benchmark.

Chain-of-Thought for Large Language Model-empowered Wireless Communications

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have opened new possibilities for automated reasoning and decision-making in wireless networks. However, applying LLMs to wireless communications presents challenges such as limited capability in handling complex logic, generalization, and reasoning. Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting, which guides LLMs to generate explicit intermediate reasoning steps, has been shown to significantly improve LLM performance on complex tasks. Inspired by this, this paper explores the application potential of CoT-enhanced LLMs in wireless communications. Specifically, we first review the fundamental theory of CoT and summarize various types of CoT. We then survey key CoT and LLM techniques relevant to wireless communication and networking. Moreover, we introduce a multi-layer intent-driven CoT framework that bridges high-level user intent expressed in natural language with concrete wireless control actions. Our proposed framework sequentially parses and clusters intent, selects appropriate CoT reasoning modules via reinforcement learning, then generates interpretable control policies for system configuration. Using the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network as a case study, we demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly outperforms a non-CoT baseline in both communication performance and quality of generated reasoning.

With the continuous evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs), LLM-based agents have advanced beyond passive chatbots to become autonomous cyber entities capable of performing complex tasks, including web browsing, malicious code and deceptive content generation, and decision-making. By significantly reducing the time, expertise, and resources, AI-assisted cyberattacks orchestrated by LLM-based agents have led to a phenomenon termed Cyber Threat Inflation, characterized by a significant reduction in attack costs and a tremendous increase in attack scale. Firstly, we present the capabilities of LLM-based cyberattack agents, which include executing autonomous attack strategies, comprising scouting, memory, reasoning, and action, and facilitating collaborative operations with other agents or human operators. Building on these capabilities, we examine common cyberattacks initiated by LLM-based agents and compare their effectiveness across different types of networks, including static, mobile, and infrastructure-free paradigms. Moreover, we analyze threat bottlenecks of LLM-based agents across different network infrastructures and review their defense methods. Due to operational imbalances, existing defense methods are inadequate against autonomous cyberattacks. Finally, we outline future research directions and potential defensive strategies for legacy network systems.
