High Fidelity 3D Hand Shape Reconstruction via Scalable Graph Frequency Decomposition

Despite the impressive performance obtained by recent single-image hand modeling techniques, they lack the capability to capture sufficient details of the 3D hand mesh. This deficiency greatly limits their applications when high-fidelity hand modeling is required, e.g., personalized hand modeling. To address this problem, we design a frequency split network to generate 3D hand mesh using different frequency bands in a coarse-to-fine manner. To capture high-frequency personalized details, we transform the 3D mesh into the frequency domain, and propose a novel frequency decomposition loss to supervise each frequency component. By leveraging such a coarse-to-fine scheme, hand details that correspond to the higher frequency domain can be preserved. In addition, the proposed network is scalable, and can stop the inference at any resolution level to accommodate different hardware with varying computational powers. To quantitatively evaluate the performance of our method in terms of recovering personalized shape details, we introduce a new evaluation metric named Mean Signal-to-Noise Ratio (MSNR) to measure the signal-to-noise ratio of each mesh frequency component. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach generates fine-grained details for high-fidelity 3D hand reconstruction, and our evaluation metric is more effective for measuring mesh details compared with traditional metrics.

Harnessing Low-Frequency Neural Fields for Few-Shot View Synthesis

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have led to breakthroughs in the novel view synthesis problem. Positional Encoding (P.E.) is a critical factor that brings the impressive performance of NeRF, where low-dimensional coordinates are mapped to high-dimensional space to better recover scene details. However, blindly increasing the frequency of P.E. leads to overfitting when the reconstruction problem is highly underconstrained, \eg, few-shot images for training. We harness low-frequency neural fields to regularize high-frequency neural fields from overfitting to better address the problem of few-shot view synthesis. We propose reconstructing with a low-frequency only field and then finishing details with a high-frequency equipped field. Unlike most existing solutions that regularize the output space (\ie, rendered images), our regularization is conducted in the input space (\ie, signal frequency). We further propose a simple-yet-effective strategy for tuning the frequency to avoid overfitting few-shot inputs: enforcing consistency among the frequency domain of rendered 2D images. Thanks to the input space regularizing scheme, our method readily applies to inputs beyond spatial locations, such as the time dimension in dynamic scenes. Comparisons with state-of-the-art on both synthetic and natural datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed solution for few-shot view synthesis. NeRFPlayer: A Streamable Dynamic Scene Representation with Decomposed Neural Radiance Fields

Visually exploring in a real-world 4D spatiotemporal space freely in VR has been a long-term quest. The task is especially appealing when only a few or even single RGB cameras are used for capturing the dynamic scene. To this end, we present an efficient framework capable of fast reconstruction, compact modeling, and streamable rendering. First, we propose to decompose the 4D spatiotemporal space according to temporal characteristics. Points in the 4D space are associated with probabilities of belonging to three categories: static, deforming, and new areas. Each area is represented and regularized by a separate neural field. Second, we propose a hybrid representations based feature streaming scheme for efficiently modeling the neural fields. Our approach, coined NeRFPlayer, is evaluated on dynamic scenes captured by single hand-held cameras and multi-camera arrays, achieving comparable or superior rendering performance in terms of quality and speed comparable to recent state-of-the-art methods, achieving reconstruction in 10 seconds per frame and interactive rendering.

MAC: A unified framework boosting low resource automatic speech recognition

We propose a unified framework for low resource automatic speech recognition tasks named meta audio concatenation (MAC). It is easy to implement and can be carried out in extremely low resource environments. Mathematically, we give a clear description of MAC framework from the perspective of bayesian sampling. In this framework, we leverage a novel concatenative synthesis text-to-speech system to boost the low resource ASR task. By the concatenative synthesis text-to-speech system, we can integrate language pronunciation rules and adjust the TTS process. Furthermore, we propose a broad notion of meta audio set to meet the modeling needs of different languages and different scenes when using the system. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the great effectiveness of MAC on low resource ASR tasks. For CTC greedy search, CTC prefix, attention, and attention rescoring decode mode in Cantonese ASR task, Taiwanese ASR task, and Japanese ASR task the MAC method can reduce the CER by more than 15\%. Furthermore, in the ASR task, MAC beats wav2vec2 (with fine-tuning) on common voice datasets of Cantonese and gets really competitive results on common voice datasets of Taiwanese and Japanese. Among them, it is worth mentioning that we achieve a \textbf{10.9\%} character error rate (CER) on the common voice Cantonese ASR task, bringing about \textbf{30\%} relative improvement compared to the wav2vec2 (with fine-tuning).

Incremental Unsupervised Feature Selection for Dynamic Incomplete Multi-view Data

Multi-view unsupervised feature selection has been proven to be efficient in reducing the dimensionality of multi-view unlabeled data with high dimensions. The previous methods assume all of the views are complete. However, in real applications, the multi-view data are often incomplete, i.e., some views of instances are missing, which will result in the failure of these methods. Besides, while the data arrive in form of streams, these existing methods will suffer the issues of high storage cost and expensive computation time. To address these issues, we propose an Incremental Incomplete Multi-view Unsupervised Feature Selection method (I$^2$MUFS) on incomplete multi-view streaming data. By jointly considering the consistent and complementary information across different views, I$^2$MUFS embeds the unsupervised feature selection into an extended weighted non-negative matrix factorization model, which can learn a consensus clustering indicator matrix and fuse different latent feature matrices with adaptive view weights. Furthermore, we introduce the incremental leaning mechanisms to develop an alternative iterative algorithm, where the feature selection matrix is incrementally updated, rather than recomputing on the entire updated data from scratch. A series of experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing with several state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method in terms of the clustering metrics and the computational cost.

10 hours data is all you need

We propose a novel procedure to generate pseudo mandarin speech data named as CAMP (character audio mix up), which aims at generating audio from a character scale. We also raise a method for building a mandarin character scale audio database adaptive to CAMP named as META-AUDIO, which makes full use of audio data and can greatly increase the data diversity of the database. Experiments show that our CAMP method is simple and quite effective. For example, we train models with 10 hours of audio data in AISHELL-1 and pseudo audio data generated by CAMP, and achieve a competitive 11.07 character error rate (CER). Besides, we also perform training with only 10 hours of audio data in AIDATATANG dataset and pseudo audio data generated by CAMP, which again achieves a competitive 8.26 CER.

Feature Selection for Fault Detection and Prediction based on Event Log Analysis

Event logs are widely used for anomaly detection and prediction in complex systems. Existing log-based anomaly detection methods usually consist of four main steps: log collection, log parsing, feature extraction, and anomaly detection, wherein the feature extraction step extracts useful features for anomaly detection by counting log events. For a complex system, such as a lithography machine consisting of a large number of subsystems, its log may contain thousands of different events, resulting in abounding extracted features. However, when anomaly detection is performed at the subsystem level, analyzing all features becomes expensive and unnecessary. To mitigate this problem, we develop a feature selection method for log-based anomaly detection and prediction, largely improving the effectiveness and efficiency.

NeuLF: Efficient Novel View Synthesis with Neural 4D Light Field

In this paper, we present an efficient and robust deep learning solution for novel view synthesis of complex scenes. In our approach, a 3D scene is represented as a light field, i.e., a set of rays, each of which has a corresponding color when reaching the image plane. For efficient novel view rendering, we adopt a two-plane parameterization of the light field, where each ray is characterized by a 4D parameter. We then formulate the light field as a 4D function that maps 4D coordinates to corresponding color values. We train a deep fully connected network to optimize this implicit function and memorize the 3D scene. Then, the scene-specific model is used to synthesize novel views. Different from previous light field approaches which require dense view sampling to reliably render novel views, our method can render novel views by sampling rays and querying the color for each ray from the network directly, thus enabling high-quality light field rendering with a sparser set of training images. Per-ray depth can be optionally predicted by the network, thus enabling applications such as auto refocus. Our novel view synthesis results are comparable to the state-of-the-arts, and even superior in some challenging scenes with refraction and reflection. We achieve this while maintaining an interactive frame rate and a small memory footprint.

PoP-Net: Pose over Parts Network for Multi-Person 3D Pose Estimation from a Depth Image

In this paper, a real-time method called PoP-Net is proposed to predict multi-person 3D poses from a depth image. PoP-Net learns to predict bottom-up part representations and top-down global poses in a single shot. Specifically, a new part-level representation, called Truncated Part Displacement Field (TPDF), is introduced which enables an explicit fusion process to unify the advantages of bottom-up part detection and global pose detection. Meanwhile, an effective mode selection scheme is introduced to automatically resolve the conflicting cases between global pose and part detections. Finally, due to the lack of high-quality depth datasets for developing multi-person 3D pose estimation, we introduce Multi-Person 3D Human Pose Dataset (MP-3DHP) as a new benchmark. MP-3DHP is designed to enable effective multi-person and background data augmentation in model training, and to evaluate 3D human pose estimators under uncontrolled multi-person scenarios. We show that PoP-Net achieves the state-of-the-art results both on MP-3DHP and on the widely used ITOP dataset, and has significant advantages in efficiency for multi-person processing. To demonstrate one of the applications of our algorithm pipeline, we also show results of virtual avatars driven by our calculated 3D joint positions. MP-3DHP Dataset and the evaluation code have been made available at: https://github.com/oppo-us-research/PoP-Net.

Approximation Theory of Convolutional Architectures for Time Series Modelling

We study the approximation properties of convolutional architectures applied to time series modelling, which can be formulated mathematically as a functional approximation problem. In the recurrent setting, recent results reveal an intricate connection between approximation efficiency and memory structures in the data generation process. In this paper, we derive parallel results for convolutional architectures, with WaveNet being a prime example. Our results reveal that in this new setting, approximation efficiency is not only characterised by memory, but also additional fine structures in the target relationship. This leads to a novel definition of spectrum-based regularity that measures the complexity of temporal relationships under the convolutional approximation scheme. These analyses provide a foundation to understand the differences between architectural choices for time series modelling and can give theoretically grounded guidance for practical applications.

RobustFusion: Robust Volumetric Performance Reconstruction under Human-object Interactions from Monocular RGBD Stream

High-quality 4D reconstruction of human performance with complex interactions to various objects is essential in real-world scenarios, which enables numerous immersive VR/AR applications. However, recent advances still fail to provide reliable performance reconstruction, suffering from challenging interaction patterns and severe occlusions, especially for the monocular setting. To fill this gap, in this paper, we propose RobustFusion, a robust volumetric performance reconstruction system for human-object interaction scenarios using only a single RGBD sensor, which combines various data-driven visual and interaction cues to handle the complex interaction patterns and severe occlusions. We propose a semantic-aware scene decoupling scheme to model the occlusions explicitly, with a segmentation refinement and robust object tracking to prevent disentanglement uncertainty and maintain temporal consistency. We further introduce a robust performance capture scheme with the aid of various data-driven cues, which not only enables re-initialization ability, but also models the complex human-object interaction patterns in a data-driven manner. To this end, we introduce a spatial relation prior to prevent implausible intersections, as well as data-driven interaction cues to maintain natural motions, especially for those regions under severe human-object occlusions. We also adopt an adaptive fusion scheme for temporally coherent human-object reconstruction with occlusion analysis and human parsing cue. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach to achieve high-quality 4D human performance reconstruction under complex human-object interactions whilst still maintaining the lightweight monocular setting.

Compound plasmonic vortex generation based on spiral nanoslits

In view of wide applications of structured light fields and plasmonic vortices, we propose the concept of compound plasmonic vortex and design several structured plasmonic vortex generators. This kind of structured plasmonic vortex generators consists of multiple spiral nanoslits and they can generate two or more concentric plasmonic vortices. Different from Laguerre-Gaussian beam, the topological charge of the plasmonic vortex in different region is different. Theoretical analysis lays the basis for the design of radially structured plasmonic vortex generators and numerical simulations for several examples confirm the effectiveness of the design principle. The discussions about the interference of vortex fields definite the generation condition for the structured vortex. This work provides a design methodology for generating new vortices using spiral nanoslits and the advanced radially structured plasmonic vortices is helpful for broadening the applications of vortex fields.

Complexity Measures for Neural Networks with General Activation Functions Using Path-based Norms

A simple approach is proposed to obtain complexity controls for neural networks with general activation functions. The approach is motivated by approximating the general activation functions with one-dimensional ReLU networks, which reduces the problem to the complexity controls of ReLU networks. Specifically, we consider two-layer networks and deep residual networks, for which path-based norms are derived to control complexities. We also provide preliminary analyses of the function spaces induced by these norms and a priori estimates of the corresponding regularized estimators.

Talking-head Generation with Rhythmic Head Motion

When people deliver a speech, they naturally move heads, and this rhythmic head motion conveys prosodic information. However, generating a lip-synced video while moving head naturally is challenging. While remarkably successful, existing works either generate still talkingface videos or rely on landmark/video frames as sparse/dense mapping guidance to generate head movements, which leads to unrealistic or uncontrollable video synthesis. To overcome the limitations, we propose a 3D-aware generative network along with a hybrid embedding module and a non-linear composition module. Through modeling the head motion and facial expressions1 explicitly, manipulating 3D animation carefully, and embedding reference images dynamically, our approach achieves controllable, photo-realistic, and temporally coherent talking-head videos with natural head movements. Thoughtful experiments on several standard benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves significantly better results than the state-of-the-art methods in both quantitative and qualitative comparisons. PIV-Based 3D Fluid Flow Reconstruction Using Light Field Camera

Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) estimates the flow of fluid by analyzing the motion of injected particles. The problem is challenging as the particles lie at different depths but have similar appearance and tracking a large number of particles is particularly difficult. In this paper, we present a PIV solution that uses densely sampled light field to reconstruct and track 3D particles. We exploit the refocusing capability and focal symmetry constraint of the light field for reliable particle depth estimation. We further propose a new motion-constrained optical flow estimation scheme by enforcing local motion rigidity and the Navier-Stoke constraint. Comprehensive experiments on synthetic and real experiments show that using a single light field camera, our technique can recover dense and accurate 3D fluid flows in small to medium volumes.

Tunable anisotropic perfect absorption in hyperbolic metamaterials based on black phosphorous/dielectric multilayer structures

Black phosphorus (BP) as a promising two-dimensional material with extraordinary optical properties constitutes an excellent building block in multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials. In this work, we design a multilayer structure composed of BP/dielectric layer stacking unit cells patterned on a gold mirror and theoretically demonstrate the tunable anisotropic absorption in the infrared regime. The electric dipole resonance between the adjacent unit cells drives the structure in the critical coupling state, and impedance of the structure matches to that of free space, showing the perfect absorption for one polarization direction, while the impedance mismatch for the other polarization direction leads to only 8.2$\%$ absorption at the same wavelength. The anisotropic absorption response of the proposed structure can be attributed to the intrinsic anisotropy of BP, which exhibits few dependence on the incident angle. Furthermore, we investigate the tunable optical absorption of the proposed structure with the electron doping of BP and the geometric parameters. These results demonstrate great potentials of BP in constituting multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials, and open up avenues in designing anisotropic metadevices with tunable spectral and polarization selectivity in the infrared regime.

Vectorial observation of the spin Seebeck effect in epitaxial NiFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films with various magnetic anisotropy contributions

We have developed a vectorial type of measurement for the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in epitaxial NiFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films which have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on MgGa$_2$O$_4$ (MGO) with (001) and (011) orientation as well as CoGa$_2$O$_4$ (011) (CGO), thus varying the lattice mismatch and crystal orientation. We confirm that a large lattice mismatch leads to strain anisotropy in addition to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the thin films using vibrating sample magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Moreover, we show that the existence of a magnetic strain anisotropy in NiFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films significantly impacts the shape and magnitude of the magnetic-field-dependent SSE voltage loops. We further demonstrate that bidirectional field-dependent SSE voltage curves can be utilized to reveal the complete magnetization reversal process, which establishes a vectorial magnetometry technique based on a spin caloric effect.
