A polar-harmonic unified gas-kinetic scheme for magnetized ion dynamics from cyclotron kinetics to the Hall-Pedersen constitutive limit

Magnetized ion transport in weakly ionized plasmas ranges from gyroangle-dependent kinetics to Hall-Pedersen drift-diffusion as collisionality and magnetization vary. We develop a polar-harmonic unified gas-kinetic scheme (PH-UGKS) for the ion Vlasov-BGK equation in a uniform magnetic field. The scheme evolves the full ion distribution by coupling a conservative density update to exponential evolution of its nonequilibrium component. Exact collision-rotation integration in gyroangle Fourier space is combined with a time-averaged kinetic flux that incorporates spatial transport and electric acceleration, together with a compact Hall-Pedersen correction to the density flux. The scheme conserves ion number, and analysis establishes second-order temporal consistency and asymptotic preservation of the Hall-Pedersen density limit at fixed magnetization. Numerical tests reproduce ion Bernstein dispersion and Dory-Guest-Harris growth rates and resolve changes in the gyroharmonic spectrum as the collision-to-gyrofrequency ratio varies. The driven ion-flux response agrees with an independent characteristic-Volterra reference, including finite-frequency departures from the instantaneous Hall-Pedersen relation. In collisional tests, accurate responses are obtained with time steps far larger than both the collision time and the gyroperiod. Fixed-resolution density tests confirm convergence to the corresponding Hall-Pedersen discretization. The same kinetic formulation thus connects kinetic response and macroscopic transport without switching to a fluid solver or subcycling microscopic time scales.

Unified Gas-Kinetic Wave-Particle Method for Multiscale Simulation of Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck System

A unified gas-kinetic wave--particle method with Fokker--Planck collisions (UGKWP-FP) is developed for the Vlasov--Poisson--Fokker--Planck system. The collision operator is modeled by the Lenard--Bernstein operator, whose stochastic representation corresponds to the Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process in velocity space. To extend the UGKWP framework beyond the conventional Bhatnagar--Gross--Krook (BGK) collision model, the Fokker--Planck operator is decomposed into a nonstiff drift--diffusion contribution and a stiff thermalization contribution. The former is retained in the particle dynamics through a modified Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process, whereas the latter is represented by a BGK-type relaxation toward the local Maxwellian. This decomposition enables an adaptive wave--particle representation: the method follows stochastic particle dynamics in rarefied regimes and increasingly represents the rapidly equilibrating distribution by the analytical wave component as the continuum regime is approached. The modified friction coefficient is constructed to recover the original Fokker--Planck dynamics in the rarefied limit while preserving the hydrodynamic limit under strong collisions. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method captures velocity-space drift and diffusion, recovers the expected kinetic and continuum behavior across a range of Knudsen numbers, and reproduces the characteristic evolution of collisional plasma phenomena.

UGKS and UGKWP Methods for Multiscale Simulation of Electrostatic Plasma in Quasineutral and Hydrodynamic Limits

This study extends the Unified Gas-Kinetic Scheme (UGKS) and the Unified Gas-Kinetic Wave-Particle (UGKWP) method for electrostatic plasma modeling, ensuring the correct asymptotic limits with respect to both the Debye length and the mean free path. By coupling collision and transport processes within the numerical flux, the proposed approach effectively removes the hydrodynamic-limit constraint associated with the mean free path. In addition, a reformulated Poisson equation, coupled with the macroscopic moment equations, is introduced to overcome the inefficiency of the standard Poisson formulation in the quasineutral regime. The accuracy and asymptotic consistency of the proposed schemes are verified through several benchmark tests, including linear and nonlinear Landau damping and the bump-on-tail instability. The results demonstrate that the methods robustly capture plasma dynamics across hydrodynamic and quasineutral regimes, without resolution constraints imposed by either the Debye length or the mean free path.

Electromagnetic Flow Control in Hypersonic Rarefied Environment

The Unified Gas-Kinetic Wave-Particle (UGKWP) method, developed for multiscale simulation of partially ionized plasmas, has been extended to unstructured meshes, enabling the modeling of electromagnetic flows around a hemisphere across near-continuum to rarefied regimes. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first application of a multiscale plasma solver to this problem. In our approach, neutrals, ions, and electrons are treated as distinct species, with electrons modeled beyond the conventional fluid approximation. The numerical implementation is validated through comparison with reference solutions for neutral hypersonic flow around a sphere, as well as benchmarking against experimental data for a Mach 4.75 pre-ionized argon flow. In both cases, the UGKWP results show good agreement with the reference and experimental data. The findings reveal that rarefied effects play a significant role in the prediction of electromagnetic flow control, underscoring the necessity of multiscale modeling in plasma flow applications.

A Gas-Kinetic Scheme for Maxwell Equations

The Gas-Kinetic Scheme (GKS), widely used in computational fluid dynamics for simulating hypersonic and other complicated flow phenomena, is extended in this work to electromagnetic problems by solving Maxwell's equations. In contrast to the classical GKS formulation, the proposed scheme employs a discrete rather than a continuous velocity space. By evaluating a time-accurate numerical flux at cell interfaces, the proposed scheme attains second-order accuracy within a single step. Its kinetic formulation provides an inherently multidimensional framework, while the finite-volume formulation ensures straightforward extension to unstructured meshes. Through the incorporation of a collision process, the scheme exhibits lower numerical dissipation than classical flux-vector splitting (FVS) methods. Furthermore, the kinetic decomposition enables direct implementation of non-reflecting boundary conditions. The proposed scheme is validated against several benchmark problems and compared with established methods, including the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method and FVS. A lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) implementation is also included for comparative analysis. Finally, the technique is applied to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation in a realistic aircraft configuration, demonstrating its ability to model complex geometries.

Unified Gas-Kinetic Wave-Particle Method for Multiscale Flow Simulation of Partially Ionized Plasma

The Unified Gas-Kinetic Wave-Particle (UGKWP) method is constructed for partially ionized plasma (PIP). This method possesses both multiscale and unified preserving (UP) properties. The multiscale property allows the method to capture a wide range of plasma physics, from the particle transport in the kinetic regime to the two-fluid and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in the near continuum regimes, with the variation of local cell Knudsen number and normalized Larmor radius. The unified preserving property ensures that the numerical time step is not limited by the particle collision time in the continuum regime for the capturing of dissipative macroscopic solutions of the resistivity, Hall-effect, and all the way to the ideal MHD equations. The UGKWP is clearly distinguishable from the classical single scale Particle-in-Cell/Monte Carlo Collision (PIC/MCC) methods. The UGKWP method combines the evolution of microscopic velocity distribution with the evolution of macroscopic mean field quantities, granting it UP properties. Moreover, the time step in UGKWP is not constrained by the plasma cyclotron period through the Crank-Nicolson scheme for fluid and electromagnetic field interactions. The momentum and energy exchange between different species is approximated by the Andries-Aoki-Perthame (AAP) model. Overall, the UGKWP method enables a smooth transition from the PIC method in the rarefied regime to the MHD solvers in the continuum regime. This method has been extensively tested on a variety of phenomena ranging from kinetic Landau damping to the macroscopic flow problems, such as the Brio-Wu shock tube, Orszag-Tang vortex, and Geospace Environmental Modeling (GEM) magnetic reconnection. These tests demonstrate that the proposed method can capture the fundamental features of PIP across different scales seamlessly.

Gas-Kinetic Scheme for Partially Ionized Plasma in Hydrodynamic Regime

Most plasmas are only partially ionized. To better understand the dynamics of these plasmas, the behaviors of a mixture of neutral species and plasma in ideal magnetohydrodynamic states are investigated. The current approach is about the construction of coupled kinetic models for the neutral gas, electron, and proton, and the development of the corresponding gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) for the solution in the continuum flow regime. The scheme is validated in the 1D Riemann problem for an enlarged system with the interaction from the Euler waves of the neutral gas and magnetohydrodynamic ones of the plasma. Additionally, the Orszag-Tang vortex problem across different ionized states is tested to examine the influence of neutrals on the MHD wave evolution. These tests demonstrate that the proposed scheme can capture the fundamental features of ideal partially ionized plasma, and a transition in the wave structure from the ideal MHD solution of the fully ionized plasma to the Euler solution of the neutral gas is obtained.
