ENN's Roadmap for Proton-Boron Fusion Based on Spherical Torus

ENN Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. (ENN) is committed to generating fusion energy in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner, which requires abundant aneutronic fuel. Proton-boron ( p-$^{11}$B or p-B) fusion is considered an ideal choice for this purpose. Recent studies have suggested that p-B fusion, although challenging, is feasible based on new cross-section data, provided that a hot ion mode and high wall reflection can be achieved to reduce electron radiation loss. The high beta and good confinement of the spherical torus (ST) make it an ideal candidate for p-B fusion. By utilizing the new spherical torus energy confinement scaling law, a reactor with a major radius $R_0=4$ m, central magnetic field $B_0=6$ T, central temperature $T_{i0}=150$ keV, plasma current $I_p=30$ MA, and hot ion mode $T_i/T_e=4$ can yield p-B fusion with $Q>10$. A roadmap for p-B fusion has been developed, with the next-generation device named EHL-2. EHL stands for ENN He-Long, which literally means ``peaceful Chinese Loong". The main target parameters include $R_0\simeq1.05$ m, $A\simeq1.85$, $B_0\simeq3$ T, $T_{i0}\simeq30$ keV, $I_p\simeq3$ MA, and $T_i/T_e\geq2$. The existing ST device EXL-50 was simultaneously upgraded to provide experimental support for the new roadmap, involving the installation and upgrading of the central solenoid, vacuum chamber, and magnetic systems. The construction of the upgraded ST fusion device, EXL-50U, was completed at the end of 2023, and it achieved its first plasma in January 2024. The construction of EHL-2 is estimated to be completed by 2026.

Phase space framework enables a variable-scale diffraction model for coherent imaging and display

The fast algorithms in Fourier optics have invigorated multifunctional device design and advanced imaging technologies. However, the necessity for fast computations has led to limitations in the widely used conventional Fourier methods, manifesting as fixed size image plane at a certain diffraction distance. These limitations pose challenges in intricate scaling transformations, 3D reconstructions and full-color displays. Currently, there is a lack of effective solutions, often resorting to pre-processing that compromise fidelity. In this paper, leveraging a higher-dimensional phase space method, we present a universal framework allowing for customized diffraction calculation methods. Within this framework, we establish a variable-scale diffraction computation model which allows the adjustment of the size of the image plane and can be operated by fast algorithms. We validate the model's robust variable-scale capabilities and its aberration automatic correction capability for full-color holography, achieving high fidelity. The large-magnification tomography experiment demonstrates that this model provides a superior solution for holographic 3D reconstruction. In addition, this model is applied to achieve full-color metasurface holography with near-zero crosstalk, showcasing its versatile applicability at nanoscale. Our model presents significant prospects for applications in the optics community, such as beam shaping, computer-generated holograms (CGHs), augmented reality (AR), metasurface optical elements (MOEs) and advanced holographic head-up display (HUD) systems.

Possible Excitonic Insulating Phase in Quantum-Confined Sb Nanoflakes

In the 1960s, it was proposed that in small indirect band-gap materials, excitons can spontaneously form because the density of carriers is too low to screen the attractive Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes. The result is a novel strongly interacting insulating phase known as an excitonic insulator. Here we employ scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) to show that the enhanced Coulomb interaction in quantum-confined elemental Sb nanoflakes drives the system to the excitonic insulator state. The unique feature of the excitonic insulator, a charge density wave (CDW) without periodic lattice distortion, is directly observed. Furthermore, STS shows a gap induced by the CDW near the Fermi surface. Our observations suggest that the Sb(110) nanoflake is an excitonic insulator.

Classification of Lagrangian translators and Lagrangian self-expanders in $\mathbb{C}^{2}$

In this paper, we obtain several classification results of $2$-dimensional complete Lagrangian translators and lagrangian self-expanders with constant squared norm $|\vec{H}|^{2}$ of the mean curvature vector in $\mathbb{C}^{2}$ by using a new Omori-Yau type maximum principle which was proved by Chen and Qiu \cite{CQ}. The same idea is also used to give a similar result of Lagrangian $ξ$-translators in $\mathbb{C}^{2}$.

Enhancing Function Name Prediction using Votes-Based Name Tokenization and Multi-Task Learning

Reverse engineers would acquire valuable insights from descriptive function names, which are absent in publicly released binaries. Recent advances in binary function name prediction using data-driven machine learning show promise. However, existing approaches encounter difficulties in capturing function semantics in diverse optimized binaries and fail to reserve the meaning of labels in function names. We propose Epitome, a framework that enhances function name prediction using votes-based name tokenization and multi-task learning, specifically tailored for different compilation optimization binaries. Epitome learns comprehensive function semantics by pre-trained assembly language model and graph neural network, incorporating function semantics similarity prediction task, to maximize the similarity of function semantics in the context of different compilation optimization levels. In addition, we present two data preprocessing methods to improve the comprehensibility of function names. We evaluate the performance of Epitome using 2,597,346 functions extracted from binaries compiled with 5 optimizations (O0-Os) for 4 architectures (x64, x86, ARM, and MIPS). Epitome outperforms the state-of-the-art function name prediction tool by up to 44.34%, 64.16%, and 54.44% in precision, recall, and F1 score, while also exhibiting superior generalizability.

Emergent Non-Abelian Thouless Pumping Induced by the Quasiperiodic Disorder

We investigate the non-Abelian Thouless pumping in a disorder tunable Lieb chain with degenerate flat bands. The results reveal that quasiperiodic disorder will cause a topological phase transition from the trivial (without non-Abelian Thouless pumping) to the non-trivial (with non-Abelian Thouless pumping) phase. The mechanism behind is that the monopole originally outside the topological region can be driven into the topological region due to the introduction of quasiperiodic disorder. Moreover, since the corresponding monopole will turn into a nodal line to spread beyond the boundaries of the topological region, the system with large disorder strength will result in the disappearance of non-Abelian Thouless pumping. Furthermore, we numerically simulate the Thouless pumping of non-Abelian systems, and the evolution results of center of mass' displacement are consistent with the Chern number. Finally, we discuss the localization properties of the system and find that, similar to [PRL 130, 206401(2023)], the inverse Anderson transition does not occur in the system with the increase of quasiperiodic strength, while the system still maintains the coexistence of localized and extended states.

BERT: Accelerating Vital Signs Measurement for Bioradar with An Efficient Recursive Technique

Recent years have witnessed the great advance of bioradar system in smart sensing of vital signs (VS) for human healthcare monitoring. As an important part of VS sensing process, VS measurement aims to capture the chest wall micromotion induced by the human respiratory and cardiac activities. Unfortunately, the existing VS measurement methods using bioradar have encountered bottlenecks in making a trade-off between time cost and measurement accuracy. To break this bottleneck, this letter proposes an efficient recursive technique (BERT) heuristically, based on the observation that the features of bioradar VS meet the conditions of Markov model. Extensive experimental results validate that BERT measurement yields lower time costs, competitive estimates of heart rate, breathing rate, and heart rate variability. Our BERT method is promising us a new and superior option to measure VS for bioradar. This work seeks not only to solve the current issue of how to accelerate VS measurement with an acceptable accuracy, but also to inspire creative new ideas that spur further advances in this promising field in the future.

Solving the Food-Energy-Water Nexus Problem via Intelligent Optimization Algorithms

The application of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to multi-objective optimization problems has been widespread. However, the EA research community has not paid much attention to large-scale multi-objective optimization problems arising from real-world applications. Especially, Food-Energy-Water systems are intricately linked among food, energy and water that impact each other. They usually involve a huge number of decision variables and many conflicting objectives to be optimized. Solving their related optimization problems is essentially important to sustain the high-quality life of human beings. Their solution space size expands exponentially with the number of decision variables. Searching in such a vast space is challenging because of such large numbers of decision variables and objective functions. In recent years, a number of large-scale many-objectives optimization evolutionary algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, we solve a Food-Energy-Water optimization problem by using the state-of-art intelligent optimization methods and compare their performance. Our results conclude that the algorithm based on an inverse model outperforms the others. This work should be highly useful for practitioners to select the most suitable method for their particular large-scale engineering optimization problems.

END4Rec: Efficient Noise-Decoupling for Multi-Behavior Sequential Recommendation

In recommendation systems, users frequently engage in multiple types of behaviors, such as clicking, adding to a cart, and purchasing. However, with diversified behavior data, user behavior sequences will become very long in the short term, which brings challenges to the efficiency of the sequence recommendation model. Meanwhile, some behavior data will also bring inevitable noise to the modeling of user interests. To address the aforementioned issues, firstly, we develop the Efficient Behavior Sequence Miner (EBM) that efficiently captures intricate patterns in user behavior while maintaining low time complexity and parameter count. Secondly, we design hard and soft denoising modules for different noise types and fully explore the relationship between behaviors and noise. Finally, we introduce a contrastive loss function along with a guided training strategy to compare the valid information in the data with the noisy signal, and seamlessly integrate the two denoising processes to achieve a high degree of decoupling of the noisy signal. Sufficient experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach in dealing with multi-behavior sequential recommendation.

Towards Personalized Evaluation of Large Language Models with An Anonymous Crowd-Sourcing Platform

Large language model evaluation plays a pivotal role in the enhancement of its capacity. Previously, numerous methods for evaluating large language models have been proposed in this area. Despite their effectiveness, these existing works mainly focus on assessing objective questions, overlooking the capability to evaluate subjective questions which is extremely common for large language models. Additionally, these methods predominantly utilize centralized datasets for evaluation, with question banks concentrated within the evaluation platforms themselves. Moreover, the evaluation processes employed by these platforms often overlook personalized factors, neglecting to consider the individual characteristics of both the evaluators and the models being evaluated. To address these limitations, we propose a novel anonymous crowd-sourcing evaluation platform, BingJian, for large language models that employs a competitive scoring mechanism where users participate in ranking models based on their performance. This platform stands out not only for its support of centralized evaluations to assess the general capabilities of models but also for offering an open evaluation gateway. Through this gateway, users have the opportunity to submit their questions, testing the models on a personalized and potentially broader range of capabilities. Furthermore, our platform introduces personalized evaluation scenarios, leveraging various forms of human-computer interaction to assess large language models in a manner that accounts for individual user preferences and contexts. The demonstration of BingJian can be accessed at https://github.com/Mingyue-Cheng/Bingjian.

Human-AI Collaboration Increases Skill Tagging Speed but Degrades Accuracy

AI approaches are progressing besting humans at game-related tasks (e.g. chess). The next stage is expected to be Human-AI collaboration; however, the research on this subject has been mixed and is in need of additional data points. We add to this nascent literature by studying Human-AI collaboration on a common administrative educational task. Education is a special domain in its relation to AI and has been slow to adopt AI approaches in practice, concerned with the educational enterprise losing its humanistic touch and because standard of quality is demanded because of the impact on a person's career and developmental trajectory. In this study (N = 22), we design an experiment to explore the effect of Human-AI collaboration on the task of tagging educational content with skills from the US common core taxonomy. Our results show that the experiment group (with AI recommendations) saved around 50% time (p < 0.01) in the execution of their tagging task but at the sacrifice of 7.7% recall (p = 0.267) and 35% accuracy (p= 0.1170) compared with the non-AI involved control group, placing the AI+human group in between the AI alone (lowest performance) and the human alone (highest performance). We further analyze log data from this AI collaboration experiment to explore under what circumstances humans still exercised their discernment when receiving recommendations. Finally, we outline how this study can assist in implementing AI tools, like ChatGPT, in education.

The Penrose Tiling is a Quantum Error-Correcting Code

The Penrose tiling (PT) is an intrinsically non-periodic way of tiling the plane, with many remarkable properties. A quantum error-correcting code (QECC) is a clever way of protecting quantum information from noise, by encoding the information with a sophisticated type of redundancy. Although PTs and QECCs might seem completely unrelated, in this paper we point out that PTs give rise to (or, in a sense, are) a remarkable new type of QECC. In this code, quantum information is encoded through quantum geometry, and any local errors or erasures in any finite region, no matter how large, may be diagnosed and corrected. We also construct variants of this code (based on the Ammann-Beenker and Fibonacci tilings) that can live on finite spatial tori, in discrete spin systems, or in an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. We discuss connections to quantum computing, condensed matter physics, and quantum gravity.

Emergent entanglement phase transitions in non-Hermitian Aubry-André-Harper chains

We investigate the entanglement dynamics of the non-Hermitian Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) chain. The results reveal that by increasing quasiperiodic strength, a phase transition occurs from the area law induced by non-Hermitian skin effect to the area law arising from Anderson localization. For the former, the entanglement entropy follows a non-monotonic process, i.e., it increases first, then oscillates, and finally converges to a stable value. While for the latter, the entanglement entropy remains low because the wave function is not expandable in Anderson's localization region. The early-stage behavior of entanglement entropy indicates that the two area-law cases are of different phases. Interestingly, the volume-law behavior emerges at the critical point between these two area-law phases. Our study reveals that the area laws induced by the skin effect and the Anderson localization is two different phases, and that a volume law can emerge at the phase transition point. The understanding of the entanglement phase transition induced by disorder and skin effect is thus deepened.

Impact of Topography and Climate on Post-fire Vegetation Recovery Across Different Burn Severity and Land Cover Types through Machine Learning

Wildfire significantly disturb ecosystems by altering forest structure, vegetation ecophysiology, and soil properties. Understanding the complex interactions between topographic and climatic conditions in post-wildfire recovery is crucial. This study investigates the interplay between topography, climate, burn severity, and years after fire on vegetation recovery across dominant land cover types (evergreen forest, shrubs, and grassland) in the Pacific Northwest region. Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data, we estimated vegetation recovery by calculating the incremental enhanced vegetation index (EVI) change during post-fire years. A machine learning technique, random forest (RF), was employed to map relationships between the input features (elevation, slope, aspect, precipitation, temperature, burn severity, and years after fire) and the target (incremental EVI recovery) for each land cover type. Variable importance analysis and partial dependence plots were generated to understand the influence of individual features. The observed and predicted incremental EVI values showed good matches, with R2 values of 0.99 for training and between 0.89 and 0.945 for testing. The study found that climate variables, specifically precipitation and temperature, were the most important features overall, while elevation played the most significant role among the topographic factors. Partial dependence plots revealed that lower precipitation tended to cause a reduction in vegetation recovery for varying temperature ranges across land cover types. These findings can aid in developing targeted strategies for post-wildfire forest management, considering the varying responses of different land cover types to topographic, climatic, and burn severity factors.

TL-nvSRAM-CIM: Ultra-High-Density Three-Level ReRAM-Assisted Computing-in-nvSRAM with DC-Power Free Restore and Ternary MAC Operations

Accommodating all the weights on-chip for large-scale NNs remains a great challenge for SRAM based computing-in-memory (SRAM-CIM) with limited on-chip capacity. Previous non-volatile SRAM-CIM (nvSRAM-CIM) addresses this issue by integrating high-density single-level ReRAMs on the top of high-efficiency SRAM-CIM for weight storage to eliminate the off-chip memory access. However, previous SL-nvSRAM-CIM suffers from poor scalability for an increased number of SL-ReRAMs and limited computing efficiency. To overcome these challenges, this work proposes an ultra-high-density three-level ReRAMs-assisted computing-in-nonvolatile-SRAM (TL-nvSRAM-CIM) scheme for large NN models. The clustered n-selector-n-ReRAM (cluster-nSnRs) is employed for reliable weight-restore with eliminated DC power. Furthermore, a ternary SRAM-CIM mechanism with differential computing scheme is proposed for energy-efficient ternary MAC operations while preserving high NN accuracy. The proposed TL-nvSRAM-CIM achieves 7.8x higher storage density, compared with the state-of-art works. Moreover, TL-nvSRAM-CIM shows up to 2.9x and 1.9x enhanced energy-efficiency, respectively, compared to the baseline designs of SRAM-CIM and ReRAM-CIM, respectively.

Benchmarking Joint Face Spoofing and Forgery Detection with Visual and Physiological Cues

Face anti-spoofing (FAS) and face forgery detection play vital roles in securing face biometric systems from presentation attacks (PAs) and vicious digital manipulation (e.g., deepfakes). Despite promising performance upon large-scale data and powerful deep models, the generalization problem of existing approaches is still an open issue. Most of recent approaches focus on 1) unimodal visual appearance or physiological (i.e., remote photoplethysmography (rPPG)) cues; and 2) separated feature representation for FAS or face forgery detection. On one side, unimodal appearance and rPPG features are respectively vulnerable to high-fidelity face 3D mask and video replay attacks, inspiring us to design reliable multi-modal fusion mechanisms for generalized face attack detection. On the other side, there are rich common features across FAS and face forgery detection tasks (e.g., periodic rPPG rhythms and vanilla appearance for bonafides), providing solid evidence to design a joint FAS and face forgery detection system in a multi-task learning fashion. In this paper, we establish the first joint face spoofing and forgery detection benchmark using both visual appearance and physiological rPPG cues. To enhance the rPPG periodicity discrimination, we design a two-branch physiological network using both facial spatio-temporal rPPG signal map and its continuous wavelet transformed counterpart as inputs. To mitigate the modality bias and improve the fusion efficacy, we conduct a weighted batch and layer normalization for both appearance and rPPG features before multi-modal fusion. We find that the generalization capacities of both unimodal (appearance or rPPG) and multi-modal (appearance+rPPG) models can be obviously improved via joint training on these two tasks. We hope this new benchmark will facilitate the future research of both FAS and deepfake detection communities.

Complete space-like self-expanders in the Minkovski space

It is our purpose to study complete space-like self-expanders in the Minkovski space. By use of maximum principle of Omori-Yau type, we can obtain the rigidity theorems on $n$-dimensional complete space-like self-expanders in the Minkovski space $\mathbb R^{n+1}_{1}$. For complete space-like self-expanders of dimension $2$, we give a classification of them under assumption of constant squared norm of the second fundamental form.

The multiple re-entrant localization in a phase-shift quasiperiodic chain

Inspired by the recently discovered phenomenon of re-entrant localization (REL) [Roy et al., PRL 126, 106803 (2021)], we propose a new approach to induce REL, i.e., to control the quasiperiodic potential's phase-shift between odd and even sites, as thus the system can be dubbed as a phase-shift AAH model. We then analyze the participation ratios and corresponding scaling behaviors, and the results reveal that multiple re-entrant localization (MREL) phenomenon occurs. Furthermore, by depicting the behavior of extension dynamics, we obtain a whole visualized process of the system entering and re-entering the localized phase multiple times. Finally, we exhibit the distribution of quasiperiodic potential with different phase-shift and quasiperiodic parameter, and show the reason for the occurrence of MREL phenomenon, i.e., the introduction of phase-shift enables a part of eigenstates to escape from the localized phase, thus weakening the ``localizibility'' of the system.
