Synthetic Data Supervised Salient Object Detection

Although deep salient object detection (SOD) has achieved remarkable progress, deep SOD models are extremely data-hungry, requiring large-scale pixel-wise annotations to deliver such promising results. In this paper, we propose a novel yet effective method for SOD, coined SODGAN, which can generate infinite high-quality image-mask pairs requiring only a few labeled data, and these synthesized pairs can replace the human-labeled DUTS-TR to train any off-the-shelf SOD model. Its contribution is three-fold. 1) Our proposed diffusion embedding network can address the manifold mismatch and is tractable for the latent code generation, better matching with the ImageNet latent space. 2) For the first time, our proposed few-shot saliency mask generator can synthesize infinite accurate image synchronized saliency masks with a few labeled data. 3) Our proposed quality-aware discriminator can select highquality synthesized image-mask pairs from noisy synthetic data pool, improving the quality of synthetic data. For the first time, our SODGAN tackles SOD with synthetic data directly generated from the generative model, which opens up a new research paradigm for SOD. Extensive experimental results show that the saliency model trained on synthetic data can achieve $98.4\%$ F-measure of the saliency model trained on the DUTS-TR. Moreover, our approach achieves a new SOTA performance in semi/weakly-supervised methods, and even outperforms several fully-supervised SOTA methods. Realization of high-dynamic-range broadband magnetic-field sensing with ensemble nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

We present a new magnetometry method integrating an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in a single-crystal diamond with an extended dynamic range for monitoring the fast changing magnetic-field. The NV-center spin resonance frequency is tracked using a closed-loop frequency locked technique with fast frequency hopping to achieve a 10 kHz measurement bandwidth, thus, allowing for the detection of fast changing magnetic signals up to 0.723 T/s.This technique exhibits an extended dynamic range subjected to the working bandwidth of the microwave source. This extended dynamic range can reach up to 4.3 mT, which is 86 times broader than the intrinsic dynamic range. The essential components for NV spin control and signal processing such as signal generation, microwave frequency control, data processing and readout are integrated in a board-level system. With this platform, we demonstrate broadband magnetometry with an optimized sensitivity of 4.2 nT-Hz-1/2. This magnetometry method has the potential to be implemented in a multichannel frequency locked vector magnetometer suitable for a wide range of practical applications such as magnetocardiography and high-precision current sensors.

Smart Explorer: Recognizing Objects in Dense Clutter via Interactive Exploration

Recognizing objects in dense clutter accurately plays an important role to a wide variety of robotic manipulation tasks including grasping, packing, rearranging and many others. However, conventional visual recognition models usually miss objects because of the significant occlusion among instances and causes incorrect prediction due to the visual ambiguity with the high object crowdedness. In this paper, we propose an interactive exploration framework called Smart Explorer for recognizing all objects in dense clutters. Our Smart Explorer physically interacts with the clutter to maximize the recognition performance while minimize the number of motions, where the false positives and negatives can be alleviated effectively with the optimal accuracy-efficiency trade-offs. Specifically, we first collect the multi-view RGB-D images of the clutter and reconstruct the corresponding point cloud. By aggregating the instance segmentation of RGB images across views, we acquire the instance-wise point cloud partition of the clutter through which the existed classes and the number of objects for each class are predicted. The pushing actions for effective physical interaction are generated to sizably reduce the recognition uncertainty that consists of the instance segmentation entropy and multi-view object disagreement. Therefore, the optimal accuracy-efficiency trade-off of object recognition in dense clutter is achieved via iterative instance prediction and physical interaction. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our Smart Explorer acquires promising recognition accuracy with only a few actions, which also outperforms the random pushing by a large margin.

E^2VTS: Energy-Efficient Video Text Spotting from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) based video text spotting has been extensively used in civil and military domains. UAV's limited battery capacity motivates us to develop an energy-efficient video text spotting solution. In this paper, we first revisit RCNN's crop & resize training strategy and empirically find that it outperforms aligned RoI sampling on a real-world video text dataset captured by UAV. To reduce energy consumption, we further propose a multi-stage image processor that takes videos' redundancy, continuity, and mixed degradation into account. Lastly, the model is pruned and quantized before deployed on Raspberry Pi. Our proposed energy-efficient video text spotting solution, dubbed as E^2VTS, outperforms all previous methods by achieving a competitive tradeoff between energy efficiency and performance. Searching Extra-tidal Features around the Globular Cluster Whiting 1

Whiting 1 is a faint and young globular cluster in the halo of the Milky Way, and was suggested to have originated in the Sagittarius spherical dwarf galaxy (Sgr dSph). In this paper, we use the deep DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys to explore tentative spatial connection between Whiting 1 and the Sgr dSph. We redetermine the fundamental parameters of Whiting 1 and use the best-fitting isochrone (age $τ$=6.5 Gyr, metalicity Z=0.005 and $\rm d_{\odot}$=26.9 kpc) to construct a theoretical matched filter for the extra-tidal features searching. Without any smooth technique to the matched filter density map, we detect a round-shape feature with possible leading and trailing tails on either side of the cluster. This raw image is not totally new compared to old discoveries, but confirms that no more large-scale features can be detected under a depth of r<=22.5 mag. In our results, the whole feature stretches 0.1-0.2 degree along the orbit of Whiting 1, which gives a much larger area than the cluster core. The tails on both sides of the cluster align along the orbital direction of the Sgr dSph as well as the cluster itself, which implies that these debris are probably stripped remnants of Whiting 1 by the Milky Way.

Radiation hydrodynamics modeling of kilonovae with SNEC

We develop a method to compute synthetic kilonova light curves that combines numerical relativity simulations of neutron star mergers and the $\texttt{SNEC}$ radiation-hydrodynamics code. We describe our implementation of initial and boundary conditions, r-process heating, and opacities for kilonova simulations. We validate our approach by carefully checking that energy conservation is satisfied and by comparing the $\texttt{SNEC}$ results with those of two semi-analytic light curve models. We apply our code to the calculation of color light curves for three binaries having different mass ratios (equal and unequal mass) and different merger outcome (short-lived and long-lived remnants). We study the sensitivity of our results to hydrodynamic effects, nuclear physics uncertainties in the heating rates, and duration of the merger simulations. We find that hydrodynamics effects are typically negligible and that homologous expansion is a good approximation in most cases. However, pressure forces can amplify the impact of uncertainties in the radioactive heating rates. We also study the impact of shocks possibly launched into the outflows by a relativistic jet. None of our models match AT2017gfo, the kilonova in GW170817. This points to possible deficiencies in our merger simulations and kilonova models which neglect non-LTE effects and possible additional energy injection from the merger remnant, and to the need to go beyond the assumption of spherical symmetry adopted in this work.

$r$-process Nucleosynthesis and Kilonovae from Hypermassive Neutron Star Remnants

We investigate $r$-process nucleosynthesis and kilonova emission resulting from binary neutron star (BNS) mergers based on a three-dimensional (3D) general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulation of a hypermassive neutron star (HMNS) remnant. The simulation includes a microphysical finite-temperature equation of state (EOS) and neutrino emission and absorption effects via a leakage scheme. We track the thermodynamic properties of the ejecta using Lagrangian tracer particles and determine its composition using the nuclear reaction network $\texttt{SkyNet}$. We investigate the impact of neutrinos on the nucleosynthetic yields by varying the neutrino luminosities during post-processing. The ejecta show a broad distribution with respect to their electron fraction $Y_e$, peaking between $\sim$0.25-0.4 depending on the neutrino luminosity employed. We find that the resulting $r$-process abundance patterns differ from solar, with no significant production of material beyond the second $r$-process peak when using luminosities recorded by the tracer particles. We also map the HMNS outflows to the radiation hydrodynamics code $\texttt{SNEC}$ and predict the evolution of the bolometric luminosity as well as broadband light curves of the kilonova. The bolometric light curve peaks on the timescale of a day and the brightest emission is seen in the infrared bands. This is the first direct calculation of the $r$-process yields and kilonova signal expected from HMNS winds based on 3D GRMHD simulations. For longer-lived remnants, these winds may be the dominant ejecta component producing the kilonova emission.

Semantic Reinforced Attention Learning for Visual Place Recognition

Large-scale visual place recognition (VPR) is inherently challenging because not all visual cues in the image are beneficial to the task. In order to highlight the task-relevant visual cues in the feature embedding, the existing attention mechanisms are either based on artificial rules or trained in a thorough data-driven manner. To fill the gap between the two types, we propose a novel Semantic Reinforced Attention Learning Network (SRALNet), in which the inferred attention can benefit from both semantic priors and data-driven fine-tuning. The contribution lies in two-folds. (1) To suppress misleading local features, an interpretable local weighting scheme is proposed based on hierarchical feature distribution. (2) By exploiting the interpretability of the local weighting scheme, a semantic constrained initialization is proposed so that the local attention can be reinforced by semantic priors. Experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques on city-scale VPR benchmark datasets.

Black-Box Diagnosis and Calibration on GAN Intra-Mode Collapse: A Pilot Study

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) nowadays are capable of producing images of incredible realism. One concern raised is whether the state-of-the-art GAN's learned distribution still suffers from mode collapse, and what to do if so. Existing diversity tests of samples from GANs are usually conducted qualitatively on a small scale, and/or depends on the access to original training data as well as the trained model parameters. This paper explores to diagnose GAN intra-mode collapse and calibrate that, in a novel black-box setting: no access to training data, nor the trained model parameters, is assumed. The new setting is practically demanded, yet rarely explored and significantly more challenging. As a first stab, we devise a set of statistical tools based on sampling, that can visualize, quantify, and rectify intra-mode collapse. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed diagnosis and calibration techniques, via extensive simulations and experiments, on unconditional GAN image generation (e.g., face and vehicle). Our study reveals that the intra-mode collapse is still a prevailing problem in state-of-the-art GANs and the mode collapse is diagnosable and calibratable in black-box settings. Privacy-Preserving Deep Action Recognition: An Adversarial Learning Framework and A New Dataset

We investigate privacy-preserving, video-based action recognition in deep learning, a problem with growing importance in smart camera applications. A novel adversarial training framework is formulated to learn an anonymization transform for input videos such that the trade-off between target utility task performance and the associated privacy budgets is explicitly optimized on the anonymized videos. Notably, the privacy budget, often defined and measured in task-driven contexts, cannot be reliably indicated using any single model performance because strong protection of privacy should sustain against any malicious model that tries to steal private information. To tackle this problem, we propose two new optimization strategies of model restarting and model ensemble to achieve stronger universal privacy protection against any attacker models. Extensive experiments have been carried out and analyzed. On the other hand, given few public datasets available with both utility and privacy labels, the data-driven (supervised) learning cannot exert its full power on this task. We first discuss an innovative heuristic of cross-dataset training and evaluation, enabling the use of multiple single-task datasets (one with target task labels and the other with privacy labels) in our problem. To further address this dataset challenge, we have constructed a new dataset, termed PA-HMDB51, with both target task labels (action) and selected privacy attributes (skin color, face, gender, nudity, and relationship) annotated on a per-frame basis. This first-of-its-kind video dataset and evaluation protocol can greatly facilitate visual privacy research and open up other opportunities. Our codes, models, and the PA-HMDB51 dataset are available at https://github.com/VITA-Group/PA-HMDB51.

Towards Privacy-Preserving Visual Recognition via Adversarial Training: A Pilot Study

This paper aims to improve privacy-preserving visual recognition, an increasingly demanded feature in smart camera applications, by formulating a unique adversarial training framework. The proposed framework explicitly learns a degradation transform for the original video inputs, in order to optimize the trade-off between target task performance and the associated privacy budgets on the degraded video. A notable challenge is that the privacy budget, often defined and measured in task-driven contexts, cannot be reliably indicated using any single model performance, because a strong protection of privacy has to sustain against any possible model that tries to hack privacy information. Such an uncommon situation has motivated us to propose two strategies, i.e., budget model restarting and ensemble, to enhance the generalization of the learned degradation on protecting privacy against unseen hacker models. Novel training strategies, evaluation protocols, and result visualization methods have been designed accordingly. Two experiments on privacy-preserving action recognition, with privacy budgets defined in various ways, manifest the compelling effectiveness of the proposed framework in simultaneously maintaining high target task (action recognition) performance while suppressing the privacy breach risk.

PCAL: A Privacy-preserving Intelligent Credit Risk Modeling Framework Based on Adversarial Learning

Credit risk modeling has permeated our everyday life. Most banks and financial companies use this technique to model their clients' trustworthiness. While machine learning is increasingly used in this field, the resulting large-scale collection of user private information has reinvigorated the privacy debate, considering dozens of data breach incidents every year caused by unauthorized hackers, and (potentially even more) information misuse/abuse by authorized parties. To address those critical concerns, this paper proposes a framework of Privacy-preserving Credit risk modeling based on Adversarial Learning (PCAL). PCAL aims to mask the private information inside the original dataset, while maintaining the important utility information for the target prediction task performance, by (iteratively) weighing between a privacy-risk loss and a utility-oriented loss. PCAL is compared against off-the-shelf options in terms of both utility and privacy protection. Results indicate that PCAL can learn an effective, privacy-free representation from user data, providing a solid foundation towards privacy-preserving machine learning for credit risk analysis.

Delving into Robust Object Detection from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: A Deep Nuisance Disentanglement Approach

Object detection from images captured by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is becoming increasingly useful. Despite the great success of the generic object detection methods trained on ground-to-ground images, a huge performance drop is observed when they are directly applied to images captured by UAVs. The unsatisfactory performance is owing to many UAV-specific nuisances, such as varying flying altitudes, adverse weather conditions, dynamically changing viewing angles, etc. Those nuisances constitute a large number of fine-grained domains, across which the detection model has to stay robust. Fortunately, UAVs will record meta-data that depict those varying attributes, which are either freely available along with the UAV images, or can be easily obtained. We propose to utilize those free meta-data in conjunction with associated UAV images to learn domain-robust features via an adversarial training framework dubbed Nuisance Disentangled Feature Transform (NDFT), for the specific challenging problem of object detection in UAV images, achieving a substantial gain in robustness to those nuisances. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, by showing state-of-the-art performance (single model) on two existing UAV-based object detection benchmarks. The code is available at https://github.com/TAMU-VITA/UAV-NDFT.

MM-Hand: 3D-Aware Multi-Modal Guided Hand Generative Network for 3D Hand Pose Synthesis

Estimating the 3D hand pose from a monocular RGB image is important but challenging. A solution is training on large-scale RGB hand images with accurate 3D hand keypoint annotations. However, it is too expensive in practice. Instead, we have developed a learning-based approach to synthesize realistic, diverse, and 3D pose-preserving hand images under the guidance of 3D pose information. We propose a 3D-aware multi-modal guided hand generative network (MM-Hand), together with a novel geometry-based curriculum learning strategy. Our extensive experimental results demonstrate that the 3D-annotated images generated by MM-Hand qualitatively and quantitatively outperform existing options. Moreover, the augmented data can consistently improve the quantitative performance of the state-of-the-art 3D hand pose estimators on two benchmark datasets. The code will be available at https://github.com/ScottHoang/mm-hand.

DREAM: A Dynamic Relational-Aware Model for Social Recommendation

Social connections play a vital role in improving the performance of recommendation systems (RS). However, incorporating social information into RS is challenging. Most existing models usually consider social influences in a given session, ignoring that both users preferences and their friends influences are evolving. Moreover, in real world, social relations are sparse. Modeling dynamic influences and alleviating data sparsity is of great importance. In this paper, we propose a unified framework named Dynamic RElation Aware Model (DREAM) for social recommendation, which tries to model both users dynamic interests and their friends temporal influences. Specifically, we design temporal information encoding modules, because of which user representations are updated in each session. The updated user representations are transferred to relational-GAT modules, subsequently influence the operations on social networks. In each session, to solve social relation sparsity, we utilize glove-based method to complete social network with virtual friends. Then we employ relational-GAT module over completed social networks to update users representations. In the extensive experiments on the public datasets, DREAM significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art solutions.

Rethinking of the Image Salient Object Detection: Object-level Semantic Saliency Re-ranking First, Pixel-wise Saliency Refinement Latter

The real human attention is an interactive activity between our visual system and our brain, using both low-level visual stimulus and high-level semantic information. Previous image salient object detection (SOD) works conduct their saliency predictions in a multi-task manner, i.e., performing pixel-wise saliency regression and segmentation-like saliency refinement at the same time, which degenerates their feature backbones in revealing semantic information. However, given an image, we tend to pay more attention to those regions which are semantically salient even in the case that these regions are perceptually not the most salient ones at first glance. In this paper, we divide the SOD problem into two sequential tasks: 1) we propose a lightweight, weakly supervised deep network to coarsely locate those semantically salient regions first; 2) then, as a post-processing procedure, we selectively fuse multiple off-the-shelf deep models on these semantically salient regions as the pixel-wise saliency refinement. In sharp contrast to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods that focus on learning pixel-wise saliency in "single image" using perceptual clues mainly, our method has investigated the "object-level semantic ranks between multiple images", of which the methodology is more consistent with the real human attention mechanism. Our method is simple yet effective, which is the first attempt to consider the salient object detection mainly as an object-level semantic re-ranking problem.

A Deeper Look at Salient Object Detection: Bi-stream Network with a Small Training Dataset

Compared with the conventional hand-crafted approaches, the deep learning based methods have achieved tremendous performance improvements by training exquisitely crafted fancy networks over large-scale training sets. However, do we really need large-scale training set for salient object detection (SOD)? In this paper, we provide a deeper insight into the interrelationship between the SOD performances and the training sets. To alleviate the conventional demands for large-scale training data, we provide a feasible way to construct a novel small-scale training set, which only contains 4K images. Moreover, we propose a novel bi-stream network to take full advantage of our proposed small training set, which is consisted of two feature backbones with different structures, achieving complementary semantical saliency fusion via the proposed gate control unit. To our best knowledge, this is the first attempt to use a small-scale training set to outperform state-of-the-art models which are trained on large-scale training sets; nevertheless, our method can still achieve the leading state-of-the-art performance on five benchmark datasets.

Recursive Multi-model Complementary Deep Fusion forRobust Salient Object Detection via Parallel Sub Networks

Fully convolutional networks have shown outstanding performance in the salient object detection (SOD) field. The state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods have a tendency to become deeper and more complex, which easily homogenize their learned deep features, resulting in a clear performance bottleneck. In sharp contrast to the conventional ``deeper'' schemes, this paper proposes a ``wider'' network architecture which consists of parallel sub networks with totally different network architectures. In this way, those deep features obtained via these two sub networks will exhibit large diversity, which will have large potential to be able to complement with each other. However, a large diversity may easily lead to the feature conflictions, thus we use the dense short-connections to enable a recursively interaction between the parallel sub networks, pursuing an optimal complementary status between multi-model deep features. Finally, all these complementary multi-model deep features will be selectively fused to make high-performance salient object detections. Extensive experiments on several famous benchmarks clearly demonstrate the superior performance, good generalization, and powerful learning ability of the proposed wider framework.
