MODMA dataset: a Multi-modal Open Dataset for Mental-disorder Analysis

According to the World Health Organization, the number of mental disorder patients, especially depression patients, has grown rapidly and become a leading contributor to the global burden of disease. However, the present common practice of depression diagnosis is based on interviews and clinical scales carried out by doctors, which is not only labor-consuming but also time-consuming. One important reason is due to the lack of physiological indicators for mental disorders. With the rising of tools such as data mining and artificial intelligence, using physiological data to explore new possible physiological indicators of mental disorder and creating new applications for mental disorder diagnosis has become a new research hot topic. However, good quality physiological data for mental disorder patients are hard to acquire. We present a multi-modal open dataset for mental-disorder analysis. The dataset includes EEG and audio data from clinically depressed patients and matching normal controls. All our patients were carefully diagnosed and selected by professional psychiatrists in hospitals. The EEG dataset includes not only data collected using traditional 128-electrodes mounted elastic cap, but also a novel wearable 3-electrode EEG collector for pervasive applications. The 128-electrodes EEG signals of 53 subjects were recorded as both in resting state and under stimulation; the 3-electrode EEG signals of 55 subjects were recorded in resting state; the audio data of 52 subjects were recorded during interviewing, reading, and picture description. We encourage other researchers in the field to use it for testing their methods of mental-disorder analysis.

A Novel Decision Tree for Depression Recognition in Speech

Depression is a common mental disorder worldwide which causes a range of serious outcomes. The diagnosis of depression relies on patient-reported scales and psychiatrist interview which may lead to subjective bias. In recent years, more and more researchers are devoted to depression recognition in speech , which may be an effective and objective indicator. This study proposes a new speech segment fusion method based on decision tree to improve the depression recognition accuracy and conducts a validation on a sample of 52 subjects (23 depressed patients and 29 healthy controls). The recognition accuracy are 75.8% and 68.5% for male and female respectively on gender-dependent models. It can be concluded from the data that the proposed decision tree model can improve the depression classification performance.

Peregrine: Network Localization and Navigation with Scalable Inference and Efficient Operation

Location-aware networks will enable new services and applications in fields such as autonomous driving, smart cities, and the Internet-of-Things. One promising solution for ubiquitous localization is network localization and navigation (NLN), where devices form a network that cooperatively localizes itself, reducing the infrastructure needed for accurate localization. This paper introduces a real-time NLN system named Peregrine, which combines distributed NLN algorithms with commercially available ultra-wideband (UWB) sensing and communication technology. The Peregrine software application, for the first time, integrates three NLN algorithms to jointly perform the tasks of localization and network operation in a technology agnostic manner, leveraging both spatial and temporal cooperation. Peregrine hardware is composed of low-cost, compact devices that comprise a microprocessor and a commercial UWB radio. This paper presents the design of the Peregrine system and characterizes the performance impact of each algorithmic component. Indoor experiments validate that our approach to realizing NLN is both reliable and scalable, and maintains sub-meter-level accuracy even in challenging indoor scenarios.

Overcoming the Channel Estimation Barrier in Massive MIMO Communication Systems

A new wave of wireless services, including virtual reality, autonomous driving and internet of things, is driving the design of new generations of wireless systems to deliver ultra-high data rates, massive number of connected devices and ultra low latency. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is one of the critical underlying technologies that allow future wireless networks to meet these service needs. This article discusses the application of deep learning (DL) for massive MIMO channel estimation in wireless networks by integrating the underlying characteristics of channels in future high-speed cellular deployment. We develop important insights derived from the physical radio frequency (RF) channel properties and present a comprehensive overview on the application of DL for accurately estimating channel state information (CSI) with low overhead. We provide examples of successful DL application in CSI estimation for massive MIMO wireless systems and highlight several promising directions for future research.

An Efficient Deep Learning Framework for Low Rate Massive MIMO CSI Reporting

Channel state information (CSI) reporting is important for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitters to achieve high capacity and energy efficiency in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode. CSI reporting for massive MIMO systems could consume excessive bandwidth and degrade spectrum efficiency. Deep learning (DL)-based compression integrated with channel correlations have demonstrated success in improving CSI recovery. However, existing works focusing on CSI compression have shown little on the efficient encoding of CSI report. In this paper, we propose an efficient DL-based compression framework (called CQNet) to jointly tackle CSI compression, report encoding, and recovery under bandwidth constraint. CQNet can be directly integrated within other DL-based CSI feedback works for further enhancement. CQNet significantly outperforms solutions using uniform CSI quantization and $μ$-law non-uniform quantization. Compared with traditional CSI reporting, much fewer bits are required to achieve comparable CSI reconstruction accuracy.

Topology optimization on two-dimensional manifolds

This paper implements topology optimization on two-dimensional manifolds. In this paper, the material interpolation is implemented on a material parameter in the partial differential equation used to describe a physical field, when this physical field is defined on a two-dimensional manifold; the material density is used to formulate a mixed boundary condition of the physical field and implement the penalization between two different types of boundary conditions, when this physical field is defined on a three-dimensional domain with its boundary conditions defined on the two-dimensional manifold corresponding a surface or an interface of this three-dimensional domain. Based on the homeomorphic property of two-dimensional manifolds, typical two-dimensional manifolds, e.g., sphere, torus, Möbius strip and Klein bottle, are included in the numerical tests, which are provided for the problems on fluidic mechanics, heat transfer and electromagnetics.

Inverse design of resonant nanostructures for extraordinary optical transmission of periodic metallic slits

This paper has presented inversely determining the resonant configuration of the bilateral nanostructures for periodic metallic slits with extraordinary optical transmission performance. The topology optimization approach is utilized to implement the inverse design procedure. Several geometrical configurations of the bilateral nanostructures are derived for periodic metallic slits. The resonant performance of the derived nanostructures are demonstrated by the transmission spectra, where the transmission peak is presented at the specified wavelength in the inverse design procedure. This provides an approach to control the red or blue shift of the transmission peak or localize the resonant performance at a desired frequency, by specifying the desired incident wavelength in the inverse design procedure. The inverse design method is extended to make the periodic metallic slits to be less sensitive to the incident wavelength. This research can be further extended to inversely find the resonant subwavelength structures for extraordinary optical absorption and other surface palsmon polariton based photonic devices. The inverse design of three dimensional apertures for extraordinary optical transmission will be investigated in our future researches.

Computation Error Analysis of Block Floating Point Arithmetic Oriented Convolution Neural Network Accelerator Design

The heavy burdens of computation and off-chip traffic impede deploying the large scale convolution neural network on embedded platforms. As CNN is attributed to the strong endurance to computation errors, employing block floating point (BFP) arithmetics in CNN accelerators could save the hardware cost and data traffics efficiently, while maintaining the classification accuracy. In this paper, we verify the effects of word width definitions in BFP to the CNN performance without retraining. Several typical CNN models, including VGG16, ResNet-18, ResNet-50 and GoogLeNet, were tested in this paper. Experiments revealed that 8-bit mantissa, including sign bit, in BFP representation merely induced less than 0.3% accuracy loss. In addition, we investigate the computational errors in theory and develop the noise-to-signal ratio (NSR) upper bound, which provides the promising guidance for BFP based CNN engine design.

Quantum simulation of the quantum Rabi model in a trapped ion

The quantum Rabi model, involving a two-level system and a bosonic field mode, is arguably the simplest and most fundamental model describing quantum light-matter interactions. Historically, due to the restricted parameter regimes of natural light-matter processes, the richness of this model has been elusive in the lab. Here, we experimentally realize a quantum simulation of the quantum Rabi model in a single trapped ion, where the coupling strength between the simulated light mode and atom can be tuned at will. The versatility of the demonstrated quantum simulator enables us to experimentally explore the quantum Rabi model in detail, including a wide range of otherwise unaccessible phenomena, as those happening in the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes. In this sense, we are able to adiabatically generate the ground state of the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime, where we are able to detect the nontrivial entanglement between the bosonic field mode and the two-level system. Moreover, we observe the breakdown of the rotating-wave approximation when the coupling strength is increased, and the generation of phonon wave packets that bounce back and forth when the coupling reaches the deep strong coupling regime. Finally, we also measure the energy spectrum of the quantum Rabi model in the ultrastrong coupling regime.

Optimal control-based inverse determination of electrode distribution for electroosmotic micromixer

This paper presents an optimal control-based inverse method used to determine the distribution of the electrodes for the electroosmotic micromixers with external driven flow from the inlet. Based on the optimal control method, one Dirichlet boundary control problem is constructed to inversely find the optimal distribution of the electrodes on the sidewalls of electroosmotic micromixers and achieve the acceptable mixing performance. After solving the boundary control problem, the step-shaped distribution of the external electric potential imposed on the sidewalls can be obtained and the distribution of electrodes can be inversely determined according to the obtained external electric potential. Numerical results are also provided to demonstrate the effectivity of the proposed method.
