Disentangle contributions to small-system collectivity via scans of light nucleus-nucleus collisions

The observation of multi-particle azimuthal correlations in high-energy small-system collisions has led to intense debate on its origin and the possible coexistence from two competing theoretical scenarios: one based on initial-state intrinsic momentum anisotropy (ISM), and the other based on final-state collective response to the collision geometry (FSM). To complement the previous scan of asymmetric collision systems ($p$+Au, $d$+Au and He+Au), we propose a scan of small symmetric collision systems at RHIC, such as C+C, O+O, Al+Al and Ar+Ar $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=0.2$ TeV, to provide further insights in disentangling contributions from these two scenarios. These symmetric small systems have the advantage of providing a better controlled initial geometry dominated by the average shape of the overlap region, as opposed to fluctuation-driven geometries in asymmetric systems. A transport model is employed to investigate the expected geometry response in the FSM scenario. Different trends of elliptic flow with increasing charge particle multiplicity are observed between symmetric and asymmetric systems, while triangular flow appears to show a similar behavior. Furthermore, a comparison of O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=0.2$ TeV and at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2.76-7$ TeV, as proposed at the LHC, provides a unique opportunity to disentangle the collision geometry effects at nucleon level from those arising from subnucleon fluctuations.

Software Engineering Practice in the Development of Deep Learning Applications

Deep-Learning(DL) applications have been widely employed to assist in various tasks. They are constructed based on a data-driven programming paradigm that is different from conventional software applications. Given the increasing popularity and importance of DL applications, software engineering practitioners have some techniques specifically for them. However, little research is conducted to identify the challenges and lacks in practice. To fill this gap, in this paper, we surveyed 195 practitioners to understand their insight and experience in the software engineering practice of DL applications. Specifically, we asked the respondents to identify lacks and challenges in the practice of the development life cycle of DL applications. The results present 13 findings that provide us with a better understanding of software engineering practice of DL applications. Further, we distil these findings into 7 actionable recommendations for software engineering researchers and practitioners to improve the development of DL applications.

Mutation Testing for Ethereum Smart Contract

Smart contract is a special program that manages digital assets on blockchain. It is difficult to recover the loss if users make transactions through buggy smart contracts, which cannot be directly fixed. Hence, it is important to ensure the correctness of smart contracts before deploying them. This paper proposes a systematic framework to mutation testing for smart contracts on Ethereum, which is currently the most popular open blockchain for deploying and running smart contracts. Fifteen novel mutation operators have been designed for Ethereum Smart Contracts (ESC), in terms of keyword, global variable/function, variable unit, and error handling. An empirical study on 26 smart contracts in four Ethereum DApps has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of mutation testing. The experimental results show that our approach can outperform the coverage-based approach on defect detection rate (96.01% vs. 55.68%). The ESC mutation operators are effective to reveal real defects and we found 117 out of 729 real bug reports are related to our operators. These show the great potential of using mutation testing for quality assurance of ESC.

From Data Quality to Model Quality: an Exploratory Study on Deep Learning

Nowadays, people strive to improve the accuracy of deep learning models. However, very little work has focused on the quality of data sets. In fact, data quality determines model quality. Therefore, it is important for us to make research on how data quality affects on model quality. In this paper, we mainly consider four aspects of data quality, including Dataset Equilibrium, Dataset Size, Quality of Label, Dataset Contamination. We deign experiment on MNIST and Cifar-10 and try to find out the influence the four aspects make on model quality. Experimental results show that four aspects all have decisive impact on the quality of models. It means that decrease in data quality in these aspects will reduce the accuracy of model.

A Preliminary Study on Data Augmentation of Deep Learning for Image Classification

Deep learning models have a large number of freeparameters that need to be calculated by effective trainingof the models on a great deal of training data to improvetheir generalization performance. However, data obtaining andlabeling is expensive in practice. Data augmentation is one of themethods to alleviate this problem. In this paper, we conduct apreliminary study on how three variables (augmentation method, augmentation rate and size of basic dataset per label) can affectthe accuracy of deep learning for image classification. The studyprovides some guidelines: (1) it is better to use transformationsthat alter the geometry of the images rather than those justlighting and color. (2) 2-3 times augmentation rate is good enoughfor training. (3) the smaller amount of data, the more obviouscontributions could have.

NeuralVis: Visualizing and Interpreting Deep Learning Models

Deep Neural Network(DNN) techniques have been prevalent in software engineering. They are employed to faciliatate various software engineering tasks and embedded into many software applications. However, analyzing and understanding their behaviors is a difficult task for software engineers. In this paper, to support software engineers in visualizing and interpreting deep learning models, we present NeuralVis, an instance-based visualization tool for DNN. NeuralVis is designed for: 1). visualizing the structure of DNN models, i.e., components, layers, as well as connections; 2). visualizing the data transformation process; 3). integrating existing adversarial attack algorithms for test input generation; 4). comparing intermediate outputs of different instances to guide the test input generation; To demonstrate the effectiveness of NeuralVis, we conduct an user study involving ten participants on two classic DNN models, i.e., LeNet and VGG-12. The result shows NeuralVis can assist developers in identifying the critical features that determines the prediction results. Video: https://youtu.be/hRxCovrOZFI

Collective long-range particle correlations in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC with the CMS detector

Measurements of two-particle angular correlations of inclusive charged particles as well as identified strange hadron in pp and pPb collisions are presented over a wide range in pseudorapidity and full azimuth. The data were collected using the CMS detector at the LHC, with nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV for pPb collisions and 5, 7, 13 TeV for pp collisions. The results are compared to semi-peripheral PbPb collision data at center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV, covering similar charged-particle multiplicity ranges of the events. For high-multiplicity pp and pPb events, a clear particle species dependence of $v_2$ is observed for $p_{T} \lesssim 2$ GeV/c. When divided by the number of constituent quarks and compared at the same transverse kinetic energy per quark, a universal scaling over a broad range of particle transverse kinetic energy has been observed. For high-multiplicity pp collisions at 13 TeV, the $v_2$ values obtained for inclusive charged particles with two-, four- and six-particle correlations are found to be comparable within uncertainties. These measurements provide strong evidence for the collective nature of the long-range correlations observed in pp collisions.

Testing as an Investment

Software testing is an expensive and important task. Plenty of researches and industrial efforts have been invested on improving software testing techniques, including criteria, tools, etc. These studies can provide guidelines to select suitable test techniques for software engineers. However, in some engineering projects, business issues may be more important than technical ones, hence we need to lobby non-technical members to support our decisions. In this paper, a well-known investment model, Nelson-Siegel model, is introduced to evaluate and forecast the processes of testing with different testing criteria. Through this model, we provide a new perspective to understand short-term, medium-term, and long-term returns of investments throughout the process of testing. A preliminary experiment is conducted to investigate three testing criteria from the viewpoint of investments. The results show that statement-coverage criterion performs best in gaining long-term yields; the short-term and medium-term yields of testing depend on the scale of programs and the number of faults they contain.

Electromagnons, magnons, and phonons in Eu$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$MnO$_3$

Here we present a detailed study of the THz and FIR response of the mixed perovskite manganite system Eu$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$MnO$_3$ for holmium concentrations x = 0.1 and 0.3. We compare the magnetic excitations of the four different magnetically ordered phases (A-type antiferromagnetic, sinusoidally modulated collinear, helical phases with spin planes perpendicular to the crystallographic a and c axes). The transition between the two latter phases goes hand in hand with a switching of the ferroelectric polarization from P||a to P||c. Special emphasis is paid to the temperature dependence of the excitations at this transition. We find a significant change of intensity indicating that the exchange striction mechanism cannot be the only mechanism to induce dipolar weight to spin-wave excitations. We also focus on excitations within the incommensurate collinear antiferromagnetic phase and find a so far unobserved excitation close to 40 cm$^{-1}$. A detailed analysis of optical weight gives a further unexpected result: In the multiferroic phase with P||c all the spectral weight of the electromagnons comes from the lowest phonon mode. However, for the phase with the polarization P||a additional spectral weight must be transferred from higher frequencies.
