Vega-MT: The JD Explore Academy Translation System for WMT22

We describe the JD Explore Academy's submission of the WMT 2022 shared general translation task. We participated in all high-resource tracks and one medium-resource track, including Chinese-English, German-English, Czech-English, Russian-English, and Japanese-English. We push the limit of our previous work -- bidirectional training for translation by scaling up two main factors, i.e. language pairs and model sizes, namely the \textbf{Vega-MT} system. As for language pairs, we scale the "bidirectional" up to the "multidirectional" settings, covering all participating languages, to exploit the common knowledge across languages, and transfer them to the downstream bilingual tasks. As for model sizes, we scale the Transformer-Big up to the extremely large model that owns nearly 4.7 Billion parameters, to fully enhance the model capacity for our Vega-MT. Also, we adopt the data augmentation strategies, e.g. cycle translation for monolingual data, and bidirectional self-training for bilingual and monolingual data, to comprehensively exploit the bilingual and monolingual data. To adapt our Vega-MT to the general domain test set, generalization tuning is designed. Based on the official automatic scores of constrained systems, in terms of the sacreBLEU shown in Figure-1, we got the 1st place on {Zh-En (33.5), En-Zh (49.7), De-En (33.7), En-De (37.8), Cs-En (54.9), En-Cs (41.4) and En-Ru (32.7)}, 2nd place on {Ru-En (45.1) and Ja-En (25.6)}, and 3rd place on {En-Ja(41.5)}, respectively; W.R.T the COMET, we got the 1st place on {Zh-En (45.1), En-Zh (61.7), De-En (58.0), En-De (63.2), Cs-En (74.7), Ru-En (64.9), En-Ru (69.6) and En-Ja (65.1)}, 2nd place on {En-Cs (95.3) and Ja-En (40.6)}, respectively.

Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Near-Field Communications

A near-field simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) network is investigated, where the hybrid beamforming architecture is employed at the base station (BS) for information transmission while charging energy harvesting users. A transmit power minimization problem is formulated by jointly optimizing of the analog beamformer, the baseband digital information/energy beamformers, and the number of dedicated energy beams. To tackle the uncertain number of dedicated energy beams, a semidefinite relaxation based rank-one solution construction method is proposed to obtain the optimal baseband digital beamformers under the fixed analog precoder. Based on the structure of the optimal baseband digital beamformers, it is proved that no dedicated energy beam is required in near-field SWIPT. To further exploit this insight, a penalty-based two-layer (PTL) algorithm is proposed to optimize the analog beamformer and baseband digital information beamformers. By employing the block coordinate descent method, the optimal analog beamformer and baseband digital information beamformers are obtained in the closed-form expressions. Moreover, to reduce the high computational complexity caused by the large number of antennas, a low-complexity two-stage algorithm is proposed. Numerical results illustrate that: 1) the proposed PTL algorithm can achieve the near-optimal performance; and 2) in contract to the far-field SWIPT, single near-field beamformer can focus the energy on multiple locations.

The moduli space of cubic threefolds with a non-Eckardt type involution via intermediate Jacobians

There are two types of involutions on a cubic threefold: the Eckardt type (which has been studied by the first named and the third named authors) and the non-Eckardt type. Here we study cubic threefolds with a non-Eckardt type involution, whose fixed locus consists of a line and a cubic curve. Specifically, we consider the period map sending a cubic threefold with a non-Eckardt type involution to the invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian. The main result is that the global Torelli Theorem holds for the period map. To prove the theorem, we project the cubic threefold from the pointwise fixed line and exhibit the invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian as a Prym variety of a (pseudo-)double cover of stable curves. The proof relies on a result of Ikeda and Naranjo-Ortega on the injectivity of the related Prym map. We also describe the invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian via the projection from a general invariant line and show that the two descriptions are related by the bigonal construction.

STM-UNet: An Efficient U-shaped Architecture Based on Swin Transformer and Multi-scale MLP for Medical Image Segmentation

Automated medical image segmentation can assist doctors to diagnose faster and more accurate. Deep learning based models for medical image segmentation have made great progress in recent years. However, the existing models fail to effectively leverage Transformer and MLP for improving U-shaped architecture efficiently. In addition, the multi-scale features of the MLP have not been fully extracted in the bottleneck of U-shaped architecture. In this paper, we propose an efficient U-shaped architecture based on Swin Transformer and multi-scale MLP, namely STM-UNet. Specifically, the Swin Transformer block is added to skip connection of STM-UNet in form of residual connection, which can enhance the modeling ability of global features and long-range dependency. Meanwhile, a novel PCAS-MLP with parallel convolution module is designed and placed into the bottleneck of our architecture to contribute to the improvement of segmentation performance. The experimental results on ISIC 2016 and ISIC 2018 demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Our method also outperforms several state-of-the-art methods in terms of IoU and Dice. Our method has achieved a better trade-off between high segmentation accuracy and low model complexity.

Physical Layer Security in Near-Field Communications

A near-field secure transmission framework is proposed. Employing the hybrid beamforming architecture, a multi-antenna base station (BS) transmits confidential information to a multi-antenna legitimate user (U) against a multi-antenna eavesdropper (E) in the near field. A two-stage algorithm is proposed to maximize the near-field secrecy capacity. Based on the fully-digital beamformers obtained in the first stage, the optimal analog beamformers and baseband digital beamformers can be alternatingly derived in the closed-form expressions in the second stage. Numerical results demonstrate that in contrast to the far-field secure communication relying on the angular disparity, the near-field secure communication mainly relies on the distance disparity between U and E.

4D-image reconstruction directly from limited-angular-range data in continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance imaging

Objective: We investigate and develop optimization-based algorithms for accurate reconstruction of four-dimensional (4D)-spectral-spatial (SS) images directly from data collected over limited angular ranges (LARs) in continuous-wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance imaging (EPRI). Methods: Basing on a discrete-to-discrete data model devised in CW EPRI employing the Zeeman-modulation (ZM) scheme for data acquisition, we first formulate the image reconstruction problem as a convex, constrained optimization program that includes a data fidelity term and also constraints on the individual directional total variations (DTVs) of the 4D-SS image. Subsequently, we develop a primal-dual-based DTV algorithm, simply referred to as the DTV algorithm, to solve the constrained optimization program for achieving image reconstruction from data collected in LAR scans in CW-ZM EPRI. Results: We evaluate the DTV algorithm in simulated- and real-data studies for a variety of LAR scans of interest in CW-ZM EPRI, and visual and quantitative results of the studies reveal that 4D-SS images can be reconstructed directly from LAR data, which are visually and quantitatively comparable to those obtained from data acquired in the standard, full-angular-range (FAR) scan in CW-ZM EPRI. Conclusion: An optimization-based DTV algorithm is developed for accurately reconstructing 4D-SS images directly from LAR data in CW-ZM EPRI. Future work includes the development and application of the optimization-based DTV algorithm for reconstructions of 4D-SS images from FAR and LAR data acquired in CW EPRI employing schemes other than the ZM scheme. Significance: The DTV algorithm developed may be exploited potentially for enabling and optimizing CW EPRI with minimized imaging time and artifacts by acquiring data in LAR scans.

Side Adapter Network for Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation

This paper presents a new framework for open-vocabulary semantic segmentation with the pre-trained vision-language model, named Side Adapter Network (SAN). Our approach models the semantic segmentation task as a region recognition problem. A side network is attached to a frozen CLIP model with two branches: one for predicting mask proposals, and the other for predicting attention bias which is applied in the CLIP model to recognize the class of masks. This decoupled design has the benefit CLIP in recognizing the class of mask proposals. Since the attached side network can reuse CLIP features, it can be very light. In addition, the entire network can be trained end-to-end, allowing the side network to be adapted to the frozen CLIP model, which makes the predicted mask proposals CLIP-aware. Our approach is fast, accurate, and only adds a few additional trainable parameters. We evaluate our approach on multiple semantic segmentation benchmarks. Our method significantly outperforms other counterparts, with up to 18 times fewer trainable parameters and 19 times faster inference speed. We hope our approach will serve as a solid baseline and help ease future research in open-vocabulary semantic segmentation. The code will be available at https://github.com/MendelXu/SAN.

DeepMIM: Deep Supervision for Masked Image Modeling

Deep supervision, which involves extra supervisions to the intermediate features of a neural network, was widely used in image classification in the early deep learning era since it significantly reduces the training difficulty and eases the optimization like avoiding gradient vanish over the vanilla training. Nevertheless, with the emergence of normalization techniques and residual connection, deep supervision in image classification was gradually phased out. In this paper, we revisit deep supervision for masked image modeling (MIM) that pre-trains a Vision Transformer (ViT) via a mask-and-predict scheme. Experimentally, we find that deep supervision drives the shallower layers to learn more meaningful representations, accelerates model convergence, and expands attention diversities. Our approach, called DeepMIM, significantly boosts the representation capability of each layer. In addition, DeepMIM is compatible with many MIM models across a range of reconstruction targets. For instance, using ViT-B, DeepMIM on MAE achieves 84.2 top-1 accuracy on ImageNet, outperforming MAE by +0.6. By combining DeepMIM with a stronger tokenizer CLIP, our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on various downstream tasks, including image classification (85.6 top-1 accuracy on ImageNet-1K, outperforming MAE-CLIP by +0.8), object detection (52.8 APbox on COCO) and semantic segmentation (53.1 mIoU on ADE20K). Code and models are available at https://github.com/OliverRensu/DeepMIM.

Bridging the Gap to Real-World Object-Centric Learning

Humans naturally decompose their environment into entities at the appropriate level of abstraction to act in the world. Allowing machine learning algorithms to derive this decomposition in an unsupervised way has become an important line of research. However, current methods are restricted to simulated data or require additional information in the form of motion or depth in order to successfully discover objects. In this work, we overcome this limitation by showing that reconstructing features from models trained in a self-supervised manner is a sufficient training signal for object-centric representations to arise in a fully unsupervised way. Our approach, DINOSAUR, significantly out-performs existing image-based object-centric learning models on simulated data and is the first unsupervised object-centric model that scales to real-world datasets such as COCO and PASCAL VOC. DINOSAUR is conceptually simple and shows competitive performance compared to more involved pipelines from the computer vision literature.

A Critical Review of Inductive Logic Programming Techniques for Explainable AI

Despite recent advances in modern machine learning algorithms, the opaqueness of their underlying mechanisms continues to be an obstacle in adoption. To instill confidence and trust in artificial intelligence systems, Explainable Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a response to improving modern machine learning algorithms' explainability. Inductive Logic Programming (ILP), a subfield of symbolic artificial intelligence, plays a promising role in generating interpretable explanations because of its intuitive logic-driven framework. ILP effectively leverages abductive reasoning to generate explainable first-order clausal theories from examples and background knowledge. However, several challenges in developing methods inspired by ILP need to be addressed for their successful application in practice. For example, existing ILP systems often have a vast solution space, and the induced solutions are very sensitive to noises and disturbances. This survey paper summarizes the recent advances in ILP and a discussion of statistical relational learning and neural-symbolic algorithms, which offer synergistic views to ILP. Following a critical review of the recent advances, we delineate observed challenges and highlight potential avenues of further ILP-motivated research toward developing self-explanatory artificial intelligence systems.

Particle-based Online Bayesian Sampling

Online optimization has gained increasing interest due to its capability of tracking real-world streaming data. Although online optimization methods have been widely studied in the setting of frequentist statistics, few works have considered online optimization with the Bayesian sampling problem. In this paper, we study an Online Particle-based Variational Inference (OPVI) algorithm that uses a set of particles to represent the approximating distribution. To reduce the gradient error caused by the use of stochastic approximation, we include a sublinear increasing batch-size method to reduce the variance. To track the performance of the OPVI algorithm with respect to a sequence of dynamically changing target posterior, we provide a detailed theoretical analysis from the perspective of Wasserstein gradient flow with a dynamic regret. Synthetic and Bayesian Neural Network experiments show that the proposed algorithm achieves better results than naively applying existing Bayesian sampling methods in the online setting.

DeepOHeat: Operator Learning-based Ultra-fast Thermal Simulation in 3D-IC Design

Thermal issue is a major concern in 3D integrated circuit (IC) design. Thermal optimization of 3D IC often requires massive expensive PDE simulations. Neural network-based thermal prediction models can perform real-time prediction for many unseen new designs. However, existing works either solve 2D temperature fields only or do not generalize well to new designs with unseen design configurations (e.g., heat sources and boundary conditions). In this paper, for the first time, we propose DeepOHeat, a physics-aware operator learning framework to predict the temperature field of a family of heat equations with multiple parametric or non-parametric design configurations. This framework learns a functional map from the function space of multiple key PDE configurations (e.g., boundary conditions, power maps, heat transfer coefficients) to the function space of the corresponding solution (i.e., temperature fields), enabling fast thermal analysis and optimization by changing key design configurations (rather than just some parameters). We test DeepOHeat on some industrial design cases and compare it against Celsius 3D from Cadence Design Systems. Our results show that, for the unseen testing cases, a well-trained DeepOHeat can produce accurate results with $1000\times$ to $300000\times$ speedup.

All in Tokens: Unifying Output Space of Visual Tasks via Soft Token

Unlike language tasks, where the output space is usually limited to a set of tokens, the output space of visual tasks is more complicated, making it difficult to build a unified visual model for various visual tasks. In this paper, we seek to unify the output space of visual tasks, so that we can also build a unified model for visual tasks. To this end, we demonstrate a single unified model that simultaneously handles two typical visual tasks of instance segmentation and depth estimation, which have discrete/fixed-length and continuous/varied-length outputs, respectively. We propose several new techniques that take into account the particularity of visual tasks: 1) Soft token. We employ soft token to represent the task output. Unlike hard tokens in the common VQ-VAE which are assigned one-hot to discrete codebooks/vocabularies, the soft token is assigned softly to the codebook embeddings. Soft token can improve the accuracy of both the next token inference and decoding of the task output; 2) Mask augmentation. Many visual tasks have corruption, undefined or invalid values in label annotations, i.e., occluded area of depth maps. We show that a mask augmentation technique can greatly benefit these tasks. With these new techniques and other designs, we show that the proposed general-purpose task-solver can perform both instance segmentation and depth estimation well. Particularly, we achieve 0.279 RMSE on the specific task of NYUv2 depth estimation, setting a new record on this benchmark. The general-purpose task-solver, dubbed AiT, is available at \url{https://github.com/SwinTransformer/AiT}.

Classification of time-reversal-invariant crystals with gauge structures

A peculiar feature of quantum states is that they may embody so-called projective representations of symmetries rather than ordinary representations. Projective representations of space groups-the defining symmetry of crystals-remain largely unexplored. Despite recent advances in artificial crystals, whose intrinsic gauge structures necessarily require a projective description, a unified theory is yet to be established. Here, we establish such a unified theory by exhaustively classifying and representing all 458 projective symmetry algebras of time-reversal-invariant crystals from 17 wallpaper groups in two dimensions-189 of which are algebraically non-equivalent. We discover three physical signatures resulting from projective symmetry algebras, including the shift of high-symmetry momenta, an enforced nontrivial Zak phase, and a spinless eight-fold nodal point. Our work offers a theoretical foundation for the field of artificial crystals and opens the door to a wealth of topological states and phenomena beyond the existing paradigms.

Apples and Oranges? Assessing Image Quality over Content Recognition

Image recognition and quality assessment are two important viewing tasks, while potentially following different visual mechanisms. This paper investigates if the two tasks can be performed in a multitask learning manner. A sequential spatial-channel attention module is proposed to simulate the visual attention and contrast sensitivity mechanisms that are crucial for content recognition and quality assessment. Spatial attention is shared between content recognition and quality assessment, while channel attention is solely for quality assessment. Such attention module is integrated into Transformer to build a uniform model for the two viewing tasks. The experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed uniform model can achieve promising performance for both quality assessment and content recognition tasks.

Magnetic field effects on the quantum spin liquid behaviors of NaYbS$_2$

Spin-orbit coupling is an important ingredient to regulate the many-body physics, especially for many spin liquid candidate materials such as rare-earth magnets and Kitaev materials. The rare-earth chalcogenides NaYbCh$_2$ (Ch = O, S, Se) is a congenital frustrating system to exhibit the intrinsic landmark of spin liquid by eliminating both the site disorders between Na$^{+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions with the big ionic size difference and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with the perfect triangular lattice of the Yb$^{3+}$ ions. The temperature versus magnetic-field phase diagram is established by the magnetization, specific heat, and neutron-scattering measurements. Notably, the neutron diffraction spectra and the magnetization curve might provide microscopic evidence for a series of spin configuration for in-plane fields, which include the disordered spin liquid state, 120$^{o}$ antiferromagnet, and one-half magnetization state. Furthermore, the ground state is suggested to be a gapless spin liquid from inelastic neutron scattering, and the magnetic field adjusts the spin orbit coupling. Therefore, the strong spin-orbit coupling in the frustrated quantum magnet substantially enriches low-energy spin physics. This rare-earth family could offer a good platform for exploring the quantum spin liquid ground state and quantum magnetic transitions.

STARS-ISAC: How Many Sensors Do We Need?

A simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) enabled integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) framework is proposed, where a novel bi-directional sensing-STARS architecture is devised to facilitate the full-space communication and sensing. Based on the proposed framework, a joint optimization problem is formulated, where the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for estimating the 2-dimension direction-of-arrival of the sensing target is minimized. Two cases are considered for sensing performance enhancement. 1) For the two-user case, an alternating optimization algorithm is proposed. In particular, the maximum number of deployable sensors is obtained in the closed-form expressions. 2) For the multi-user case, an extended CRB (ECRB) metric is proposed to characterize the impact of the number of sensors on the sensing performance. Based on the proposed metric, a novel penalty-based double-loop (PDL) algorithm is proposed to solve the ECRB minimization problem. To tackle the coupling of the ECRB, a general decoupling approach is proposed to convert it to a tractable weighted linear summation form. Simulation results reveal that 1) the proposed PDL algorithm can achieve a near-optimal performance with consideration of sensor deployment; 2) without violating the communication under the quality of service requirements, reducing the receive antennas at the BS does not deteriorate the sensing performance; and 3) it is preferable to deploy more passive elements than sensors in terms of achieving optimal sensing performance
