UPPAAL-SMC: Statistical Model Checking for Priced Timed Automata

This paper offers a survey of uppaalsmc, a major extension of the real-time verification tool uppaal. uppaalsmc allows for the efficient analysis of performance properties of networks of priced timed automata under a natural stochastic semantics. In particular, uppaalsmc relies on a series of extensions of the statistical model checking approach generalized to handle real-time systems and estimate undecidable problems. uppaalsmc comes together with a friendly user interface that allows a user to specify complex problems in an efficient manner as well as to get feedback in the form of probability distributions and compare probabilities to analyze performance aspects of systems. The focus of the survey is on the evolution of the tool - including modeling and specification formalisms as well as techniques applied - together with applications of the tool to case studies.

Channel Coding in Random Access Communication over Compound Channels

Due to the short and bursty incoming messages, channel access activities in a wireless random access system are often fractional. The lack of frequent data support consequently makes it difficult for the receiver to estimate and track the time varying channel states with high precision. This paper investigates random multiple access communication over a compound wireless channel where channel realization is known neither at the transmitters nor at the receiver. An achievable rate and error probability tradeoff bound is derived under the non-asymptotic assumption of a finite codeword length. The results are then extended to the random multiple access system where the receiver is only interested in decoding messages from a user subset.

Fountain Communication using Concatenated Codes

This paper extends linear-complexity concatenated coding schemes to fountain communication over the discrete-time memoryless channel. Achievable fountain error exponents for one-level and multi-level concatenated fountain codes are derived. It is also shown that concatenated coding schemes possess interesting properties in several multi-user fountain communication scenarios.

Error Performance of Channel Coding in Random Access Communication

A new channel coding approach was proposed in [1] for random multiple access communication over the discrete-time memoryless channel. The coding approach allows users to choose their communication rates independently without sharing the rate information among each other or with the receiver. The receiver will either decode the message or report a collision depending on whether reliable message recovery is possible. It was shown that, asymptotically as the codeword length goes to infinity, the set of communication rates supporting reliable message recovery can be characterized by an achievable region which equals Shannon's information rate region possibly without a convex hull operation. In this paper, we derive achievable bounds on error probabilities, including the decoding error probability and the collision miss detection probability, of random multiple access systems with a finite codeword length. Achievable error exponents are obtained by taking the codeword length to infinity.

Discovery Potential of New Boson $W_1^{\pm}$ in the Minimal Higgsless Model at LHC

In this paper, we demonstrate the LHC discovery potential of new charged vector boson $W_1^{\pm}$ predicted by the Minimal Higgsless model in the process $pp\to W_1^{\pm}qq^{\prime}\to W^{\pm}Z^0qq^\prime\to \ell^{\pm}\ell^+\ell^-νqq^{\prime}(\ell=e,μ)$ by analyzing the generator level events of the signal and backgrounds. The generator for the signal $pp \to {W_1}^{\pm}qq^\prime\to W^{\pm}Z^0qq^\prime$ at tree level is developed with the Minimal Higgsless model and then interfaced with PYTHIA for the parton showers and hadronization. The backgrounds are produced with PYTHIA and ACERMC. We give integrated luminosities required to discover 5$σ$ signal as a function of $W_1^{\pm}$ mass.

Approaching Blokh-Zyablov Error Exponent with Linear-Time Encodable/Decodable Codes

Guruswami and Indyk showed in [1] that Forney's error exponent can be achieved with linear coding complexity over binary symmetric channels. This paper extends this conclusion to general discrete-time memoryless channels and shows that Forney's and Blokh-Zyablov error exponents can be arbitrarily approached by one-level and multi-level concatenated codes with linear encoding/decoding complexity. The key result is a revision to Forney's general minimum distance decoding algorithm, which enables a low complexity integration of Guruswami-Indyk's outer codes into the concatenated coding schemes.

On the Capacity Improvement of Multicast Traffic with Network Coding

In this paper, we study the contribution of network coding (NC) in improving the multicast capacity of random wireless ad hoc networks when nodes are endowed with multi-packet transmission (MPT) and multi-packet reception (MPR) capabilities. We show that a per session throughput capacity of $Θ(nT^{3}(n))$, where $n$ is the total number of nodes and T(n) is the communication range, can be achieved as a tight bound when each session contains a constant number of sinks. Surprisingly, an identical order capacity can be achieved when nodes have only MPR and MPT capabilities. This result proves that NC does not contribute to the order capacity of multicast traffic in wireless ad hoc networks when MPR and MPT are used in the network. The result is in sharp contrast to the general belief (conjecture) that NC improves the order capacity of multicast. Furthermore, if the communication range is selected to guarantee the connectivity in the network, i.e., $T(n)\ge Θ(\sqrt{\log n/n})$, then the combination of MPR and MPT achieves a throughput capacity of $Θ(\frac{\log^{3/2} n}{\sqrt{n}})$ which provides an order capacity gain of $Θ(\log^2 n)$ compared to the point-to-point multicast capacity with the same number of destinations.

Reflection-Free One-Way Edge Modes in a Gyromagnetic Photonic Crystal

We point out that electromagnetic one-way edge modes analogous to quantum Hall edge states, originally predicted by Raghu and Haldane in 2D gyroelectric photonic crystals possessing Dirac point-derived bandgaps, can appear in more general settings. In particular, we show that the TM modes in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal can be formally mapped to electronic wavefunctions in a periodic electromagnetic field, so that the only requirement for the existence of one-way edge modes is that the Chern number for all bands below a gap is non-zero. In a square-lattice gyromagnetic Yttrium-Iron-Garnet photonic crystal operating at microwave frequencies, which lacks Dirac points, time-reversal breaking is strong enough that the effect should be easily observable. For realistic material parameters, the edge modes occupy a 10% band gap. Numerical simulations of a one-way waveguide incorporating this crystal show 100% transmission across strong defects, such as perfect conductors several lattice constants wide, larger than the width of the waveguide.

A Cosmic Model Parameterizing the late Universe

A simple speed-up cosmology model is proposed to account for the dark energy puzzle. We condense contributions from dark energy and curvature term into one effective parameter in order to reduce parameter degeneracies and to find any deviation from flat concordance $Λ$CDM model, by considering that the discrimination between dynamical and non-dynamical sources of cosmic acceleration as the best starting point for analyzing dark energy data sets both at present and in future. We also combine recent Type Ia Supernova (SNIa), Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Baryon Oscillation (BAO) to constrain model parameter space. Degeneracies between model parameters are discussed by using both degeneracy diagram and data analysis including high redshift information from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) sample. The analysis results show that our model is consistent with cosmological observations. We try to distinct the curvature effects from the specially scaling dark energy component as parameterized. We study the linear growth of large scale structure, and finally show the effective dark energy equation of state in our model and how the matter component coincidences with the dark energy numerically.
