On the Geometric Ergodicity of Metropolis-Hastings Algorithms for Lattice Gaussian Sampling

Sampling from the lattice Gaussian distribution is emerging as an important problem in coding and cryptography. In this paper, the classic Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithm from Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods is adapted for lattice Gaussian sampling. Two MH-based algorithms are proposed, which overcome the restriction suffered by the default Klein's algorithm. The first one, referred to as the independent Metropolis-Hastings-Klein (MHK) algorithm, tries to establish a Markov chain through an independent proposal distribution. We show that the Markov chain arising from the independent MHK algorithm is uniformly ergodic, namely, it converges to the stationary distribution exponentially fast regardless of the initial state. Moreover, the rate of convergence is explicitly calculated in terms of the theta series, leading to a predictable mixing time. In order to further exploit the convergence potential, a symmetric Metropolis-Klein (SMK) algorithm is proposed. It is proven that the Markov chain induced by the SMK algorithm is geometrically ergodic, where a reasonable selection of the initial state is capable to enhance the convergence performance.

Bayesian inverse problems with $l_1$ priors: a Randomize-then-Optimize approach

Prior distributions for Bayesian inference that rely on the $l_1$-norm of the parameters are of considerable interest, in part because they promote parameter fields with less regularity than Gaussian priors (e.g., discontinuities and blockiness). These $l_1$-type priors include the total variation (TV) prior and the Besov $B^s_{1,1}$ space prior, and in general yield non-Gaussian posterior distributions. Sampling from these posteriors is challenging, particularly in the inverse problem setting where the parameter space is high-dimensional and the forward problem may be nonlinear. This paper extends the randomize-then-optimize (RTO) method, an optimization-based sampling algorithm developed for Bayesian inverse problems with Gaussian priors, to inverse problems with $l_1$-type priors. We use a variable transformation to convert an $l_1$-type prior to a standard Gaussian prior, such that the posterior distribution of the transformed parameters is amenable to Metropolized sampling via RTO. We demonstrate this approach on several deconvolution problems and an elliptic PDE inverse problem, using TV or Besov $B^s_{1,1}$ space priors. Our results show that the transformed RTO algorithm characterizes the correct posterior distribution and can be more efficient than other sampling algorithms. The variable transformation can also be extended to other non-Gaussian priors.

Efficient Delivery Policy to Minimize User Traffic Consumption in Guaranteed Advertising

In this work, we study the guaranteed delivery model which is widely used in online display advertising. In the guaranteed delivery scenario, ad exposures (which are also called impressions in some works) to users are guaranteed by contracts signed in advance between advertisers and publishers. A crucial problem for the advertising platform is how to fully utilize the valuable user traffic to generate as much as possible revenue. Different from previous works which usually minimize the penalty of unsatisfied contracts and some other cost (e.g. representativeness), we propose the novel consumption minimization model, in which the primary objective is to minimize the user traffic consumed to satisfy all contracts. Under this model, we develop a near optimal method to deliver ads for users. The main advantage of our method lies in that it consumes nearly as least as possible user traffic to satisfy all contracts, therefore more contracts can be accepted to produce more revenue. It also enables the publishers to estimate how much user traffic is redundant or short so that they can sell or buy this part of traffic in bulk in the exchange market. Furthermore, it is robust with regard to priori knowledge of user type distribution. Finally, the simulation shows that our method outperforms the traditional state-of-the-art methods.

Reduced storage nodal discontinuous Galerkin methods on semi-structured prismatic meshes

We present a high order time-domain nodal discontinuous Galerkin method for wave problems on hybrid meshes consisting of both wedge and tetrahedral elements. We allow for vertically mapped wedges which can be deformed along the extruded coordinate, and present a simple method for producing quasi-uniform wedge meshes for layered domains. We show that standard mass lumping techniques result in a loss of energy stability on meshes of vertically mapped wedges, and propose an alternative which is both energy stable and efficient. High order convergence is demonstrated, and comparisons are made with existing low-storage methods on wedges. Finally, the computational performance of the method on Graphics Processing Units is evaluated.

Optimal Risk-Averse Timing of an Asset Sale: Trending vs Mean-Reverting Price Dynamics

This paper studies the optimal risk-averse timing to sell a risky asset. The investor's risk preference is described by the exponential, power, or log utility. Two stochastic models are considered for the asset price -- the geometric Brownian motion and exponential Ornstein-Uhlenbeck models -- to account for, respectively, the trending and mean-reverting price dynamics. In all cases, we derive the optimal thresholds and certainty equivalents to sell the asset, and compare them across models and utilities, with emphasis on their dependence on asset price, risk aversion, and quantity. We find that the timing option may render the investor's value function and certainty equivalent non-concave in price. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the investor's strategies and the premium associated with optimally timing to sell.

Modeling and Predicting DNS Server Load

The DNS relies on caching to ensure high scalability and good performance. In optimizing caching, TTL adjustment provides a means of balancing between query load and TTL-dependent performances such as data consistency, load balancing, migration time, etc. To gain the desired balance, TTL adjustment depends on predictions of query loads under alternative TTLs. This paper proposes a model of DNS server load, which employs the uniform aggregate caching model to simplify the complexity of modeling clients' requests and their caching. A method of predicting DNS server load is developed using that model. The prediction method is solely based on the unilateral measurements or observations at authoritative servers. Without reliance on lots of multi-point measurements nor distributed measuring facilities, the method is best suited for DNS authoritative operators. The proposed model and prediction method are validated through extensive simulations. Finally, global sensibility analysis is conducted to evaluate the impacts of measurement uncertainties or errors on the predictions.

The Availability and Security Implications of Glue in the Domain Name System

The Domain Name System (DNS) is one of the most fundamental components of the Internet. While glue is widely used and heavily relied on in DNS operations, there is little thinking about the necessity, complexity, and venerability of such prevalent configuration. This work is the first to provide extensive and systematic analysis of DNS glue. It discusses the availability implications of glue and proposes the minimum glue records in terms of availability. It also identifies the security vulnerabilities of glue as well as the limitations of current countermeasures. Measurements show the wide occurrences of glue redundancies and glue vulnerabilities.

Combating Malicious DNS Tunnel

This paper proposes a defense scheme against malicious use of DNS tunnel. A tunnel validator is designed to provide trustworthy tunnel-aware defensive recursive service. In addition to the detection algorithm of malicious tunnel domains, the tunnel validation relies on registered tunnel domains as whitelist and identified malicious tunnel domains as blacklist. A benign tunnel user is thus motivated to register its tunnel domain before using it. Through the tunnel validation, the secure domains are allowed to the recursive service provided by the tunnel validator and the insecure domains are blocked. All inbound suspicious DNS queries are recorded and stored for forensics and future malicious tunnel detection by the tunnel validator.

DoraPicker: An Autonomous Picking System for General Objects

Robots that autonomously manipulate objects within warehouses have the potential to shorten the package delivery time and improve the efficiency of the e-commerce industry. In this paper, we present a robotic system that is capable of both picking and placing general objects in warehouse scenarios. Given a target object, the robot autonomously detects it from a shelf or a table and estimates its full 6D pose. With this pose information, the robot picks the object using its gripper, and then places it into a container or at a specified location. We describe our pick-and-place system in detail while highlighting our design principles for the warehouse settings, including the perception method that leverages knowledge about its workspace, three grippers designed to handle a large variety of different objects in terms of shape, weight and material, and grasp planning in cluttered scenarios. We also present extensive experiments to evaluate the performance of our picking system and demonstrate that the robot is competent to accomplish various tasks in warehouse settings, such as picking a target item from a tight space, grasping different objects from the shelf, and performing pick-and-place tasks on the table.

Topological phase transition induced extreme magnetoresistance in TaSb$_{2}$

We report extremely large positive magnetoresistance of 1.72 million percent in single crystal TaSb$_{2}$ at moderate conditions of 1.5 K and 15 T. The quadratic growth of magnetoresistance (MR $\propto\,B^{1.96}$) is not saturating up to 15 T, a manifestation of nearly perfect compensation with $<0.1\%$ mismatch between electron and hole pockets in this semimetal. The compensation mechanism is confirmed by temperature-dependent MR, Hall and thermoelectric coefficients of Nernst and Seebeck, revealing two pronounced Fermi surface reconstruction processes without spontaneous symmetry breaking, \textit{i.e.} Lifshitz transitions, at around 20 K and 60 K, respectively. Using quantum oscillations of magnetoresistance and magnetic susceptibility, supported by density-functional theory calculations, we determined that the main hole Fermi surface of TaSb$_{2}$ forms a unique shoulder structure along the $F-L$ line. The flat band top of this shoulder pocket is just a few meV above the Fermi level, leading to the observed topological phase transition at 20 K when the shoulder pocket disappears. Further increase in temperature pushes the Fermi level to the band top of the main hole pocket, induced the second Lifshitz transition at 60 K when hole pocket vanishes completely.

Take up DNSSEC When Needed

The threats of caching poisoning attacks largely stimulate the deployment of DNSSEC. Being a strong but demanding cryptographical defense, DNSSEC has its universal adoption predicted to go through a lengthy transition. Thus the DNSSEC practitioners call for a secure yet lightweight solution to speed up DNSSEC deployment while offering an acceptable DNSSEC-like defense. This paper proposes a new defense against cache poisoning attacks, still using but lightly using DNSSEC. In the solution, DNS operates in the DNSSEC-oblivious mode unless a potential attack is detected and triggers a switch to the DNSSEC-aware mode. The performance of the defense is analyzed and validated. The modeling checking results demonstrate that only a small DNSSEC query load is needed to ensure a small enough cache poisoning success rate.

An Estimation Method Using Periodic Inspection of Indicators

This paper proposes a new approach for estimating the failure time distribution using the indicator data. The indicators, which are checked by periodic inspection of a standby redundant system, only convey whether at least one failure occurs per interval. The estimation procedure first obtains the estimation of the forward recurrence time using the indicator data. Then the mean is estimated based on its relationship with the forward recurrence time. And the estimation of the sampled Cdf is thus derived based on its relationship with the forward recurrence time and the mean. Finally, the Cdf function is estimated using interpolation method. The simulation results showed that the estimation method performed well for the four Weibull distributions.

Evaluation of new large area PMT with high quantum efficiency

The neutrino detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is designed to use 20 kilotons of liquid scintillator and approximately 16,000 20-inch photomultipliers (PMTs).One of the options is to use the 20-inch R12860 PMT with high quantum efficiency which has recently been developed by Hamamatsu Photonics. The performance of the newly developed PMT preproduction samples is evaluated. The results show that its quantum efficiency is $30\%$ at $400 nm$. Its Peak/Valley (P/V) ratio for the single photoelectron is 4.75 and the dark count rate is $27 kHz$ at the threshold of 3 mV while the gain is at $1 \times 10^7$. The transit time spread of a single photoelectron is $2.86 ns$. Generally the performances of this new 20-inch PMT are improved over the old one of R3600.

Speculative Futures Trading under Mean Reversion

This paper studies the problem of trading futures with transaction costs when the underlying spot price is mean-reverting. Specifically, we model the spot dynamics by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU), Cox-Ingersoll-Ross (CIR), or exponential Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (XOU) model. The futures term structure is derived and its connection to futures price dynamics is examined. For each futures contract, we describe the evolution of the roll yield, and compute explicitly the expected roll yield. For the futures trading problem, we incorporate the investor's timing option to enter or exit the market, as well as a chooser option to long or short a futures upon entry. This leads us to formulate and solve the corresponding optimal double stopping problems to determine the optimal trading strategies. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the optimal entry and exit boundaries under different models. We find that the option to choose between a long or short position induces the investor to delay market entry, as compared to the case where the investor pre-commits to go either long or short.

Prototype of Readout Electronics for the ED in LHAASO KM2A

The KM2A(one kilometer square extensive air shower array) is the largest detector array in the LHAA- SO(Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory) project. The KM2A consists of 5635 EDs(Electromagnetic particle Detectors) and 1221 MDs(Muon Detectors). The EDs are distributed and exposed in the wild. Two channels, Anode and Dynode, are employed for the PMT(photomultiplier tube) signal readout. The readout electronics proposed in this paper aims at the accurate charge and arrival time measurement of the PMT signals, which cover a large amplitude range from 20P.E(photoelectrons) to 2x10^5 P.E. By using the Trigger-less architecture, we digitize signals close to the PMTs. All digitized data is transmitted to DAQ(Data Acquisition) via the simplified WR(White Rabbit) protocol. Compared with traditional high energy experiments, high-precision of time measurement in such a large area and suppression of temperature effects in the wild become the key techniques. Experiments show that the design has fulfilled the requirements in this project.

Extraordinary wavelength reduction in terahertz graphene-cladded photonic crystal slabs

Photonic crystal slabs have been widely used in nanophotonics for light confinement, dispersion engineering, nonlinearity enhancement, and other unusual effects arising from their structural periodicity. Sub-micron device sizes and mode volumes are routine for silicon-based photonic crystal slabs, however spectrally they are limited to operate in the near infrared. Here, we show that two single-layer graphene sheets allow silicon photonic crystal slabs with submicron periodicity to operate in the terahertz regime, with an extreme 100x wavelength reduction and excellent out-of-plane confinement. The graphene-cladded photonic crystal slabs exhibit band structures closely resembling those of ideal two-dimensional photonic crystals, with broad two-dimensional photonic band gaps even when the slab thickness approaches zero. The overall photonic band structure not only scales with the graphene Fermi level, but more importantly scales to lower frequencies with reduced slab thickness. Just like ideal 2D photonic crystals, graphene-cladded photonic crystal slabs confine light along line defects, forming waveguides with the propagation lengths on the order of tens of lattice constants. The proposed structure opens up the possibility to dramatically reduce the size of terahertz photonic systems by orders of magnitude.

Trapping and guiding surface plasmons in curved graphene landscapes

We demonstrate that graphene placed on top of structured substrates offers a novel approach for trapping and guiding surface plasmons. A monolayer graphene with a spatially varying curvature exhibits an effective trapping potential for graphene plasmons near curved areas such as bumps, humps and wells. We derive the governing equation for describing such localized channel plasmons guided by curved graphene and validate our theory by the first-principle numerical simulations. The proposed confinement mechanism enables plasmon guiding by the regions of maximal curvature, and it offers a versatile platform for manipulating light in planar landscapes. In addition, isolated deformations of graphene such as bumps are shown to support localized surface modes and resonances suggesting a new way to engineer plasmonic metasurfaces.

Kinetic inductance driven nanoscale 2D and 3D THz transmission lines

We examine the unusual dispersion and attenuation of transverse electromagnetic waves in the few-THz regime on nanoscale graphene and copper transmission lines. Conventionally, such propagation has been considered to be highly dispersive, due to the RC-constant-driven voltage diffusion below 1THz and plasmonic effects at higher frequencies. Our numerical modelling between the microwave and optical regimes reveals that conductor kinetic inductance creates an ultra-broadband LC region. This resultant frequency-independent attenuation is an ideal characteristic that is known to be non-existent in macro-scale transmission lines. The kinetic-LC frequency range is dictated by the structural dimensionality and the free-carrier scattering rate of the conductor material. Moreover, up to 40x wavelength reduction is observed in graphene transmission lines.
