Surface Electromyography-controlled Pedestrian Collision Avoidance: A Driving Simulator Study

Drivers with disabilities such as hemiplegia or unilateral upper limb amputation restricting steering wheel operation to one arm could encounter the challenge of stabilizing vehicles during pedestrian collision avoidance. An sEMG-controlled steering assistance system was developed for these drivers to enable rapid steering wheel rotation with only one healthy arm. Test drivers were recruited to use the Myo armband as a sEMG-based interface to perform pedestrian collision avoidance in a driving simulator. It was hypothesized that the sEMG-based interface would be comparable or superior in vehicle stability to manual takeover from automated driving and conventional steering wheel operation. The Myo armband interface was significantly superior to manual takeover from automated driving and comparable to manual steering wheel operation. The results of the driving simulator trials confirm the feasibility of the sEMG-controlled system as a safe alternative that could benefit drivers with the aforesaid disabilities.

Efficient and Effective Similar Subtrajectory Search with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Similar trajectory search is a fundamental problem and has been well studied over the past two decades. However, the similar subtrajectory search (SimSub) problem, aiming to return a portion of a trajectory (i.e., a subtrajectory) which is the most similar to a query trajectory, has been mostly disregarded despite that it could capture trajectory similarity in a finer-grained way and many applications take subtrajectories as basic units for analysis. In this paper, we study the SimSub problem and develop a suite of algorithms including both exact and approximate ones. Among those approximate algorithms, two that are based on deep reinforcement learning stand out and outperform those non-learning based algorithms in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. We conduct experiments on real-world trajectory datasets, which verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Streaming Probabilistic Deep Tensor Factorization

Despite the success of existing tensor factorization methods, most of them conduct a multilinear decomposition, and rarely exploit powerful modeling frameworks, like deep neural networks, to capture a variety of complicated interactions in data. More important, for highly expressive, deep factorization, we lack an effective approach to handle streaming data, which are ubiquitous in real-world applications. To address these issues, we propose SPIDER, a Streaming ProbabilistIc Deep tEnsoR factorization method. We first use Bayesian neural networks (NNs) to construct a deep tensor factorization model. We assign a spike-and-slab prior over the NN weights to encourage sparsity and prevent overfitting. We then use Taylor expansions and moment matching to approximate the posterior of the NN output and calculate the running model evidence, based on which we develop an efficient streaming posterior inference algorithm in the assumed-density-filtering and expectation propagation framework. Our algorithm provides responsive incremental updates for the posterior of the latent factors and NN weights upon receiving new tensor entries, and meanwhile select and inhibit redundant/useless weights. We show the advantages of our approach in four real-world applications.

Guidance and Evaluation: Semantic-Aware Image Inpainting for Mixed Scenes

Completing a corrupted image with correct structures and reasonable textures for a mixed scene remains an elusive challenge. Since the missing hole in a mixed scene of a corrupted image often contains various semantic information, conventional two-stage approaches utilizing structural information often lead to the problem of unreliable structural prediction and ambiguous image texture generation. In this paper, we propose a Semantic Guidance and Evaluation Network (SGE-Net) to iteratively update the structural priors and the inpainted image in an interplay framework of semantics extraction and image inpainting. It utilizes semantic segmentation map as guidance in each scale of inpainting, under which location-dependent inferences are re-evaluated, and, accordingly, poorly-inferred regions are refined in subsequent scales. Extensive experiments on real-world images of mixed scenes demonstrated the superiority of our proposed method over state-of-the-art approaches, in terms of clear boundaries and photo-realistic textures.

Road Network Metric Learning for Estimated Time of Arrival

Recently, deep learning have achieved promising results in Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), which is considered as predicting the travel time from the origin to the destination along a given path. One of the key techniques is to use embedding vectors to represent the elements of road network, such as the links (road segments). However, the embedding suffers from the data sparsity problem that many links in the road network are traversed by too few floating cars even in large ride-hailing platforms like Uber and DiDi. Insufficient data makes the embedding vectors in an under-fitting status, which undermines the accuracy of ETA prediction. To address the data sparsity problem, we propose the Road Network Metric Learning framework for ETA (RNML-ETA). It consists of two components: (1) a main regression task to predict the travel time, and (2) an auxiliary metric learning task to improve the quality of link embedding vectors. We further propose the triangle loss, a novel loss function to improve the efficiency of metric learning. We validated the effectiveness of RNML-ETA on large scale real-world datasets, by showing that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art model and the promotion concentrates on the cold links with few data.

Sparse Gaussian Process Based On Hat Basis Functions

Gaussian process is one of the most popular non-parametric Bayesian methodologies for modeling the regression problem. It is completely determined by its mean and covariance functions. And its linear property makes it relatively straightforward to solve the prediction problem. Although Gaussian process has been successfully applied in many fields, it is still not enough to deal with physical systems that satisfy inequality constraints. This issue has been addressed by the so-called constrained Gaussian process in recent years. In this paper, we extend the core ideas of constrained Gaussian process. According to the range of training or test data, we redefine the hat basis functions mentioned in the constrained Gaussian process. Based on hat basis functions, we propose a new sparse Gaussian process method to solve the unconstrained regression problem. Similar to the exact Gaussian process and Gaussian process with Fully Independent Training Conditional approximation, our method obtains satisfactory approximate results on open-source datasets or analytical functions. In terms of performance, the proposed method reduces the overall computational complexity from $O(n^{3})$ computation in exact Gaussian process to $O(nm^{2})$ with $m$ hat basis functions and $n$ training data points.

Multi-Fidelity High-Order Gaussian Processes for Physical Simulation

The key task of physical simulation is to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) on discretized domains, which is known to be costly. In particular, high-fidelity solutions are much more expensive than low-fidelity ones. To reduce the cost, we consider novel Gaussian process (GP) models that leverage simulation examples of different fidelities to predict high-dimensional PDE solution outputs. Existing GP methods are either not scalable to high-dimensional outputs or lack effective strategies to integrate multi-fidelity examples. To address these issues, we propose Multi-Fidelity High-Order Gaussian Process (MFHoGP) that can capture complex correlations both between the outputs and between the fidelities to enhance solution estimation, and scale to large numbers of outputs. Based on a novel nonlinear coregionalization model, MFHoGP propagates bases throughout fidelities to fuse information, and places a deep matrix GP prior over the basis weights to capture the (nonlinear) relationships across the fidelities. To improve inference efficiency and quality, we use bases decomposition to largely reduce the model parameters, and layer-wise matrix Gaussian posteriors to capture the posterior dependency and to simplify the computation. Our stochastic variational learning algorithm successfully handles millions of outputs without extra sparse approximations. We show the advantages of our method in several typical applications.

Fusion Recurrent Neural Network

Considering deep sequence learning for practical application, two representative RNNs - LSTM and GRU may come to mind first. Nevertheless, is there no chance for other RNNs? Will there be a better RNN in the future? In this work, we propose a novel, succinct and promising RNN - Fusion Recurrent Neural Network (Fusion RNN). Fusion RNN is composed of Fusion module and Transport module every time step. Fusion module realizes the multi-round fusion of the input and hidden state vector. Transport module which mainly refers to simple recurrent network calculate the hidden state and prepare to pass it to the next time step. Furthermore, in order to evaluate Fusion RNN's sequence feature extraction capability, we choose a representative data mining task for sequence data, estimated time of arrival (ETA) and present a novel model based on Fusion RNN. We contrast our method and other variants of RNN for ETA under massive vehicle travel data from DiDi Chuxing. The results demonstrate that for ETA, Fusion RNN is comparable to state-of-the-art LSTM and GRU which are more complicated than Fusion RNN.

FMA-ETA: Estimating Travel Time Entirely Based on FFN With Attention

Estimated time of arrival (ETA) is one of the most important services in intelligent transportation systems and becomes a challenging spatial-temporal (ST) data mining task in recent years. Nowadays, deep learning based methods, specifically recurrent neural networks (RNN) based ones are adapted to model the ST patterns from massive data for ETA and become the state-of-the-art. However, RNN is suffering from slow training and inference speed, as its structure is unfriendly to parallel computing. To solve this problem, we propose a novel, brief and effective framework mainly based on feed-forward network (FFN) for ETA, FFN with Multi-factor self-Attention (FMA-ETA). The novel Multi-factor self-attention mechanism is proposed to deal with different category features and aggregate the information purposefully. Extensive experimental results on the real-world vehicle travel dataset show FMA-ETA is competitive with state-of-the-art methods in terms of the prediction accuracy with significantly better inference speed.

Neighborhood Matching Network for Entity Alignment

Structural heterogeneity between knowledge graphs is an outstanding challenge for entity alignment. This paper presents Neighborhood Matching Network (NMN), a novel entity alignment framework for tackling the structural heterogeneity challenge. NMN estimates the similarities between entities to capture both the topological structure and the neighborhood difference. It provides two innovative components for better learning representations for entity alignment. It first uses a novel graph sampling method to distill a discriminative neighborhood for each entity. It then adopts a cross-graph neighborhood matching module to jointly encode the neighborhood difference for a given entity pair. Such strategies allow NMN to effectively construct matching-oriented entity representations while ignoring noisy neighbors that have a negative impact on the alignment task. Extensive experiments performed on three entity alignment datasets show that NMN can well estimate the neighborhood similarity in more tough cases and significantly outperforms 12 previous state-of-the-art methods.

Smart, Adaptive Energy Optimization for Mobile Web Interactions

Web technology underpins many interactive mobile applications. However, energy-efficient mobile web interactions is an outstanding challenge. Given the increasing diversity and complexity of mobile hardware, any practical optimization scheme must work for a wide range of users, mobile platforms and web workloads. This paper presents CAMEL , a novel energy optimization system for mobile web interactions. CAMEL leverages machine learning techniques to develop a smart, adaptive scheme to judiciously trade performance for reduced power consumption. Unlike prior work, C AMEL directly models how a given web content affects the user expectation and uses this to guide energy optimization. It goes further by employing transfer learning and conformal predictions to tune a previously learned model in the end-user environment and improve it over time. We apply CAMEL to Chromium and evaluate it on four distinct mobile systems involving 1,000 testing webpages and 30 users. Compared to four state-of-the-art web-event optimizers, CAMEL delivers 22% more energy savings, but with 49% fewer violations on the quality of user experience, and exhibits orders of magnitudes less overhead when targeting a new computing environment.

Beyond Intra-modality: A Survey of Heterogeneous Person Re-identification

An efficient and effective person re-identification (ReID) system relieves the users from painful and boring video watching and accelerates the process of video analysis. Recently, with the explosive demands of practical applications, a lot of research efforts have been dedicated to heterogeneous person re-identification (Hetero-ReID). In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art Hetero-ReID methods that address the challenge of inter-modality discrepancies. According to the application scenario, we classify the methods into four categories -- low-resolution, infrared, sketch, and text. We begin with an introduction of ReID, and make a comparison between Homogeneous ReID (Homo-ReID) and Hetero-ReID tasks. Then, we describe and compare existing datasets for performing evaluations, and survey the models that have been widely employed in Hetero-ReID. We also summarize and compare the representative approaches from two perspectives, i.e., the application scenario and the learning pipeline. We conclude by a discussion of some future research directions. Follow-up updates are avaible at: https://github.com/lightChaserX/Awesome-Hetero-reID

Constructing Geographic and Long-term Temporal Graph for Traffic Forecasting

Traffic forecasting influences various intelligent transportation system (ITS) services and is of great significance for user experience as well as urban traffic control. It is challenging due to the fact that the road network contains complex and time-varying spatial-temporal dependencies. Recently, deep learning based methods have achieved promising results by adopting graph convolutional network (GCN) to extract the spatial correlations and recurrent neural network (RNN) to capture the temporal dependencies. However, the existing methods often construct the graph only based on road network connectivity, which limits the interaction between roads. In this work, we propose Geographic and Long term Temporal Graph Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (GLT-GCRNN), a novel framework for traffic forecasting that learns the rich interactions between roads sharing similar geographic or longterm temporal patterns. Extensive experiments on a real-world traffic state dataset validate the effectiveness of our method by showing that GLT-GCRNN outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of different metrics.

Illumination-Adaptive Person Re-identification

Most person re-identification (ReID) approaches assume that person images are captured under relatively similar illumination conditions. In reality, long-term person retrieval is common, and person images are often captured under different illumination conditions at different times across a day. In this situation, the performances of existing ReID models often degrade dramatically. This paper addresses the ReID problem with illumination variations and names it as {\em Illumination-Adaptive Person Re-identification (IA-ReID)}. We propose an Illumination-Identity Disentanglement (IID) network to dispel different scales of illuminations away while preserving individuals' identity information. To demonstrate the illumination issue and to evaluate our model, we construct two large-scale simulated datasets with a wide range of illumination variations. Experimental results on the simulated datasets and real-world images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Cosmic muon flux measurement and tunnel overburden structure imaging

We present a cosmic ray muon tomographic experiment for measuring the muon flux and imaging the tunnel overburden structures in Changshu, China. The device used in this study is a tracking detector based on the plastic scintillator with SiPM technology, which can be conveniently operated in field works. The compact system with sensitive area of $6400 cm^2$ can measure the angular distribution of cosmic muons. It's able to image the overburden density length from the surface of overburden to the detector along the muon tracks. The open sky muon flux measurement outside the tunnel has a good agreement with the modified Gassier Formula model. The distributions of muon flux at three positions inside the tunnel are very similar to that of open sky. Assuming the average density of overburden compact sandstone is $2.65 g/cm^3$, the overburden thickness can be obtained from the density length derived from the difference of muon flux inside and outside the tunnel. Moreover, for known penetrated lengths (i.e., topography of overburden), the density anomalies of the overburden can also been obtained. This study suggests a potential application for imaging and detecting subsurface structures in civil engineering, tunnels or caverns with the cosmic ray muon telescope.

Stability and error estimates for the variable step-size BDF2 method for linear and semilinear parabolic equations

In this paper stability and error estimates for time discretizations of linear and semilinear parabolic equations by the two-step backward differentiation formula (BDF2) method with variable step-sizes are derived. An affirmative answer is provided to the question: whether the upper bound of step-size ratios for the $l^\infty(0,T;H)$-stability of the BDF2 method for linear and semilinear parabolic equations is identical with the upper bound for the zero-stability. The $l^\infty(0,T;V)$-stability of the variable step-size BDF2 method is also established under more relaxed condition on the ratios of consecutive step-sizes. Based on these stability results, error estimates in several different norms are derived. To utilize the BDF method the trapezoidal method and the backward Euler scheme are employed to compute the starting value. For the latter choice, order reduction phenomenon of the constant step-size BDF2 method is observed theoretically and numerically in several norms. Numerical results also illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for linear and semilinear parabolic equations.

Hybrid Actuator Design for a Gait Augmentation Wearable

We describe a fluidic actuator design that replaces the sealed chamber of a hydraulic cylinder using a soft actuator to provide compliant linear compression with a large force ($\geq$100 N) at a low operation pressure ($\leq$50 kPa) for a lower-limb wearable. The external shells constrain the deformation of the soft actuator under fluidic pressurization. This enables us to use latex party balloons as a quick and cheap alternative for initial design investigation. We found that the forces exerted by the soft material deformation are well-captured by the rigid shells, removing the necessity of explicitly describing the mechanics of the soft material deformation and its interaction with the rigid structure. One can use the classical Force, Pressure and Area formula factored with an efficiency parameter to characterize the actuator performance. Furthermore, we proposed an engineering design of the hybrid actuator using a customized soft actuator placed inside a single shell cavity with an open end for the compression force. Our results show that the proposed design can generate a very high force within a short stroke distance. At a low input pressure of 50 kPa, the exerted block force is approaching only about 3\% less than the classical equation predicted. The actuator is fitted to a new gait augmentation design for correcting knee alignment, which is usually challenging for actuators made from the purely soft material.
