Spatial Clustering of Curves with Functional Covariates: A Bayesian Partitioning Model with Application to Spectra Radiance in Climate Study

In climate change study, the infrared spectral signatures of climate change have recently been conceptually adopted, and widely applied to identifying and attributing atmospheric composition change. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model for spatial clustering of the high-dimensional functional data based on the effects of functional covariates and local features. We couple the functional mixed-effects model with a generalized spatial partitioning method for: (1) producing spatially contiguous clusters for the high-dimensional spatio-functional data; (2) improving the computational efficiency via parallel computing over subregions or multi-level partitions; and (3) capturing the near-boundary ambiguity and uncertainty for data-driven partitions. We propose a generalized partitioning method which puts less constraints on the shape of spatial clusters. Dimension reduction in the parameter space is also achieved via Bayesian wavelets to alleviate the increasing model complexity introduced by clusters. The model well captures the regional effects of the atmospheric and cloud properties on the spectral radiance measurements. The results elaborate the importance of exploiting spatially contiguous partitions for identifying regional effects and small-scale variability.

Isospin splitting of nucleon effective mass from giant resonances in $^{208}$Pb

Based on mean field calculations with Skyrme interactions, we extract a constraint on the isovector effective mass in nuclear matter at saturation density $ρ_0$, i.e., $m_{v}^{\ast}(ρ_0)=(0.77\pm0.03) m$ by combining the experimental data of the centroid energy of the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) and the electric dipole polarizability $α_{\mathrm{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb. Meanwhile, the isoscalar effective mass at $ρ_0$ is determined to be $m_{s}^{\ast}(ρ_0)=(0.91\pm0.05) m$ by analyzing the measured excitation energy of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (ISGQR) in $^{208}$Pb. From the constrained $m_{s}^{\ast}(ρ_0)$ and $m_{v}^{\ast}(ρ_0)$, we obtain the isospin splitting of nucleon effective mass in asymmetric nuclear matter of isospin asymmetry $δ$ at $ρ_0$ as $[m_n^{\ast}(ρ_0,δ)-m_p^{\ast}(ρ_0,δ)]/m = Δm^*_1(ρ_0) δ+ O(δ^3)$ with the linear isospin splitting coefficient $Δm^*_1(ρ_0) = 0.33\pm0.16$. We notice that using the recently corrected data on the $α_{\mathrm{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb with the contribution of the quasideuteron effect subtracted slightly enhances the isovector effective mass to $m_{v}^{\ast}(ρ_0)=(0.80\pm0.03) m$ and reduces the linear isospin splitting coefficient to $Δm^*_1(ρ_0) = 0.27\pm0.15$. Furthermore, the constraints on $m_{v}^{\ast}(ρ)$, $m_{s}^{\ast}(ρ)$ and $Δm^*_1(ρ)$ at other densities are obtained from the similar analyses and we find that the $Δm^*_1(ρ)$ increases with the density.

Time-resolved Measurement of Quadrupole Wakefields in Corrugated Structures

Corrugated structures have recently been widely used for manipulating electron beam longitudinal phase space and for producing THz radiation. Here we report on time-resolved measurements of the quadrupole wakefields in planar corrugated structures. It is shown that while the time- dependent quadrupole wakefield produced by a planar corrugated structure causes significant growth in beam transverse emittance, it can be effectively canceled with a second corrugated structure with orthogonal orientation. The strengths of the time-dependent quadrupole wakefields for various corrugated structure gaps are also measured and found to be in good agreement with theories. Our work should forward the applications of corrugated structures in many accelerator based scientific facilities.

The physical fundamental plane of black hole activity: revisited

The correlation between the jet power and accretion disk luminosity is investigated for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) from the literature. The power-law correlation index is steep ($μ\sim$ 1.0--1.4) for radio loud quasars and the `outliers' track of BHXBs, and it is flatter ($μ\sim$ 0.3--0.6) for radio loud galaxies and the standard track of BHXBs. The steep-index groups are mostly at higher accretion rates (peaked at Eddington ratio $>$ 0.01) and the flatter-index groups are at relatively low accretion rates (peaked at Eddington ratio $<$ 0.01), implying that the former groups could be dominated by the inner disk accretion of black hole, while the jet in latter groups would be a hybrid production of the accretion and black hole spin. We could still have a fundamental plane of black hole activity for the BHXBs and AGNs with diverse (maybe two kinds of) correlation indices. It is noted that the fundamental plane of black hole activity should be referred to the correlation between the jet power and disk luminosity or equivalently to the correlation between jet power, Eddington ratio and black hole mass, rather than the jet power, disk luminosity and black hole mass.

Simultaneous Acquisition of Multi-nuclei Enhanced NMR/MRI by Solution State Dynamic Nuclear Polarization

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) has become a very important hyperpolarization method because it can dramatically increase the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of various molecules. Liquid-state DNP based on Overhauser effect is capable of directly enhancing polarizations of all kinds of nuclei in the system. The combination of simultaneous Overhauser multi-nuclei enhancements with the multi-nuclei parallel acquisitions provides a variety of important applications in both MR spectroscopy (MRS) and image (MRI). Here we present two simple illustrative examples for simultaneously enhanced multi-nuclear spectra and images to demonstrate the principle and superiority. We have observed very large simultaneous DNP enhancements for different nuclei, such as 1H and 23Na, 1H and 31P, 19F and 31P, especially for the first time to report sodium ion enhancement in liquid. We have also obtained the simultaneous imaging of 19H and 31P at low field by solution-state DNP for the first time. This method can obtain considerably complementary structure-determination information of miscellaneous biomolecules from a single measurement. It can also be used in combination with the fast acquisition schemes and quantitative analysis with reduced scan time.

Managing Multi-Granular Linguistic Distribution Assessments in Large-Scale Multi-Attribute Group Decision Making

Linguistic large-scale group decision making (LGDM) problems are more and more common nowadays. In such problems a large group of decision makers are involved in the decision process and elicit linguistic information that are usually assessed in different linguistic scales with diverse granularity because of decision makers' distinct knowledge and background. To keep maximum information in initial stages of the linguistic LGDM problems, the use of multi-granular linguistic distribution assessments seems a suitable choice, however to manage such multigranular linguistic distribution assessments, it is necessary the development of a new linguistic computational approach. In this paper it is proposed a novel computational model based on the use of extended linguistic hierarchies, which not only can be used to operate with multi-granular linguistic distribution assessments, but also can provide interpretable linguistic results to decision makers. Based on this new linguistic computational model, an approach to linguistic large-scale multi-attribute group decision making is proposed and applied to a talent selection process in universities.

Two-Sample Smooth Tests for the Equality of Distributions

This paper considers the problem of testing the equality of two unspecified distributions. The classical omnibus tests such as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramèr-von Mises are known to suffer from low power against essentially all but location-scale alternatives. We propose a new two-sample test that modifies the Neyman's smooth test and extend it to the multivariate case based on the idea of projection pursue. The asymptotic null property of the test and its power against local alternatives are studied. The multiplier bootstrap method is employed to compute the critical value of the multivariate test. We establish validity of the bootstrap approximation in the case where the dimension is allowed to grow with the sample size. Numerical studies show that the new testing procedures perform well even for small sample sizes and are powerful in detecting local features or high-frequency components.

Electric Dipole Polarizability in $^{208}$Pb as a Probe of the Symmetry Energy and Neutron Matter around $ρ_0/3$

It is currently a big challenge to accurately determine the symmetry energy $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ)$ and the pure neutron matter equation of state $E_{\text{PNM}}(ρ)$, even their values around saturation density $ρ_0 $. We find that the electric dipole polarizability $α_ {\text{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb can be determined uniquely by the magnitude of the $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ)$ or almost equivalently the $E_{\text{PNM}}(ρ)$ at subsaturation densities around $ρ_0/3 $, shedding a light upon the genuine correlation between the $α_ {\text{D}}$ and the $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ)$. By analyzing the experimental data of the $α_ {\text{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb from RCNP using a number of non-relativistic and relativistic mean-field models, we obtain very stringent constraints on $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ)$ and $E_{\text{PNM}}(ρ)$ around $ρ_0/3 $. The obtained constraints are found to be in good agreement with the results extracted in other analyses. In particular, our results provide for the first time the experimental constraints on $E_{\text{PNM}}(ρ)$ around $ρ_0/3 $, which are in harmony with the recent determination of $E_{\text{PNM}}(ρ)$ from microscopic theoretical studies and potentially useful in constraining the largely uncertain many-nucleon interactions in microscopic calculations of neutron matter.

Gapless quantum spin liquid ground state in the two-dimensional spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$

Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ with R$\bar{3}$m symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite $Θ$$_w$ $\sim$ -4 K), the low-T power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility suggest that YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising gapless ($\leq$ $|$$Θ$$_w$$|$/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO$_4$, approaches zero ($<$ 0.6 \%). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures.

Experimental round-robin differential phase-shift quantum key distribution

In conventional quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, security is guaranteed by estimating the amount of leaked information through monitoring signal disturbance, which, in practice, is generally caused by environmental noise and device imperfections rather than eavesdropping. Such estimation therefore tends to overrate the amount of leaked information in practice, leads to a fundamental threshold of the bit error rate. The threshold becomes a bottleneck of the development of practical QKD systems. In classical communication, according to Shannon's communication theory, information can transform through a noisy channel even if the background noise is very strong compare to the signal and hence the threshold of the bit error rate tends to 50%. One might wonder whether a QKD scheme can also tolerate error rate as high as 50%. The question is answered affirmatively with the recent work of round-robin differential phase-shift (RRDPS) protocol, which breaks through the fundamental threshold of the bit error rate and indicates another potential direction in the field of quantum cryptography. The key challenge to realize the RRDPS scheme lies on the measurement device, which requires a variable-delay interferometer. The delay needs to be chosen from a set of predetermined values randomly. Such measurement can be realized by switching between many interferometers with different delays at a high speed in accordance with the system repetition rate. The more delay values can be chosen from, the higher error rate can be tolerated. By designing an optical system with multiple switches and employing an active phase stabilization technology, we successfully construct a variable-delay interferometer with 128 actively selectable delays. With this measurement, we experimentally demonstrate the RRDPS QKD protocol and obtain a final key rate of 15.54 bps via a total loss of 18 dB and 8.9% error rate.

BACOM2: a Java tool for detecting normal cell contamination of copy number in heterogeneous tumor

We develop a cross-platform open-source Java application (BACOM2) with graphic user interface (GUI), and users also can use a XML file to set the parameters of algorithm model, file paths and the dataset of paired samples. BACOM2 implements the new entire pipeline of copy number change analysis for heterogeneous cancer tissues, including extraction of raw copy number signals from CEL files of paired samples, attenuation correction, identification of balanced AB-genotype loci, copy number detection and segmentation, global baseline calculation and absolute normalization, differentiation of deletion types, estimation of the normal tissue fraction and correction of normal tissue contamination. BACOM2 focuses on the common tools for data preparation and absolute normalization for copy number analysis of heterogeneous cancer tissues. The software provides an additional choice for scientists who require a user-friendly, high-speed processing, cross-platform computing environment for large copy number data analysis.

Discrete-phase-randomized coherent state source and its application in quantum key distribution

Coherent state photon sources are widely used in quantum information processing. In many applications, such as quantum key distribution (QKD), a coherent state is functioned as a mixture of Fock states by assuming its phase is continuously randomized. In practice, such a crucial assumption is often not satisfied and, therefore, the security of existing QKD experiments is not guaranteed. To bridge this gap, we provide a rigorous security proof of QKD with discrete-phase-randomized coherent state sources. Our results show that the performance of the discrete-phase randomization case is close to its continuous counterpart with only a small number (say, 10) of discrete phases. Comparing to the conventional continuous phase randomization case, where an infinite amount of random bits are required, our result shows that only a small amount (say, 4 bits) of randomness is needed.

Constraining the density slope of nuclear symmetry energy at subsaturation densities using electric dipole polarizability in $^{208}$Pb

Nuclear structure observables usually most effectively probe the properties of nuclear matter at subsaturation densities rather than at saturation density. We demonstrate that the electric dipole polarizibility $α_ {\text{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb is sensitive to both the magnitude $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ_{\text{c}})$ and density slope $L(ρ_{\text{c}})$ of the symmetry energy at a subsaturation cross density $ρ_{\text{c}} = 0.11$ fm$^{-3}$. Using the experimental data of $α_ {\text{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb from RCNP and the recent accurate constraint of $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ_{\text{c}})$ from the binding energy difference of heavy isotope pairs, we extract a value of $L(ρ_{\text{c}}) = 47.3 \pm 7.8$ MeV. The implication of the present constraint of $L(ρ_{\text{c}})$ to the symmetry energy at saturation density, the neutron skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb and the core-crust transition density in neutron stars is discussed.

On the relation of accretion rate and spin induced jet power in low luminosity AGN

From Liu and Han (2014), the accretion-dominated jet power has a linear proportionality with the accretion rate, whereas the power law index is <=0.5 at lower accretion rate. Attributing the jet power in low accretion rate AGN to the black hole spin, it implies that the jet power has a flatter spectrum than the accretion-dominated jet versus the accretion rate. The black hole must be spinning rapidly for producing such jet power efficiently, and this may allow us to find high-spin black holes in the radio-loud low-luminosity AGN.

Field Test of Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution

A main type of obstacles of practical applications of quantum key distribution (QKD) network is various attacks on detection. Measurement-device-independent QKD (MDIQKD) protocol is immune to all these attacks and thus a strong candidate for network security. Recently, several proof-of-principle demonstrations of MDIQKD have been performed. Although novel, those experiments are implemented in the laboratory with secure key rates less than 0.1 bps. Besides, they need manual calibration frequently to maintain the system performance. These aspects render these demonstrations far from practicability. Thus, justification is extremely crucial for practical deployment into the field environment. Here, by developing an automatic feedback MDIQKD system operated at a high clock rate, we perform a field test via deployed fiber network of 30 km total length, achieving a 16.9 bps secure key rate. The result lays the foundation for a global quantum network which can shield from all the detection-side attacks.

BACOM 2.0 facilitates absolute normalization and quantification of somatic copy number alterations in heterogeneous tumor

BACOM is a statistically principled and unsupervised method that detects copy number deletion types (homozygous versus heterozygous), estimates normal cell fraction, and recovers cancer specific copy number profiles, using allele specific copy number signals. In a subsequent analysis of TCGA ovarian cancer dataset, the average normal cell fraction estimated by BACOM was found higher than expected. In this letter, we first discuss the advantages of the BACOM in relation to alternative approaches. Then, we show that this elevated estimate of normal cell fraction is the combined result of inaccurate signal modeling and normalization. Lastly, we describe an allele specific signal modeling and normalization scheme that can enhance BACOM applications in many biological contexts. An open source MATLAB program was developed to implement our extended method and it is publically available.

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution over 200 km

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDIQKD) protocol is immune to all attacks on detection and guarantees the information-theoretical security even with imperfect single photon detectors. Recently, several proof-of-principle demonstrations of MDIQKD have been achieved. Those experiments, although novel, are implemented through limited distance with a key rate less than 0.1 bps. Here, by developing a 75 MHz clock rate fully-automatic and highly-stable system, and superconducting nanowire single photon detectors with detection efficiencies more than 40%, we extend the secure transmission distance of MDIQKD to 200 km and achieve a secure key rate of three orders of magnitude higher. These results pave the way towards a quantum network with measurement-device-independent security.

Quantum Metrology with Dicke Squeezed States

We introduce a new class of quantum many-particle entangled states, called the Dicke squeezed (or DS) states, which can be used to improve the precision in quantum metrology beyond the standard quantum limit. We show that the enhancement in measurement precision is characterized by a single experimentally detectable parameter, called the Dicke squeezing $ξ_{D}$, which also bounds the entanglement depth for this class of states. The measurement precision approaches the ultimate Heisenberg limit as $ξ_{D}$ attains the minimum in an ideal Dicke state. Compared with other entangled states, we show that the Dicke squeezed states are more robust to decoherence and give better measurement precision under typical experimental noise.
