Nanoindentation-induced evolution of atomic-level properties in silicate glass: Insights from molecular dynamics simulations

Indentation has been widely used for investigating the mechanical behavior of glasses. However, how the various microscopic properties (such as atomic structure and mechanics) of glass evolve from the immediate contact with the indenter to the far-field regions, and how these observables are correlated to each other remain largely unknown. Here, using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the response of a prototypical sodium silicate glass under shape contact load up to an indentation depth of 25 nm. Both the short- and intermediate-range structures are found to exhibit notable changes below the indent, indicating that indentation deformation induces a more disordered and heterogeneous network structure. In addition, we find that the indentation-induced changes of local properties all exhibit an exponential decaying behavior with increasing distance from the indent. Comparison of the characteristic decay lengths of these local properties indicates that the structural origins of shear flow and densification are the changes of the network modifier's coordination environment and the inter-tetrahedral connection, respectively. The decay of densification is considerably slower than that of shear strain, implying that the former might contribute more to the deformation at the far-field regions. Our findings not only contribute to an atomistic understanding of the indentation response of silicate glasses but also pave the way towards rational design of damage-resistant glassy materials.

Kinetic approach of light-nuclei production in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions

We develop a kinetic approach to the production of light nuclei up to mass number $A$ $\leqslant$ $4$ in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions by including them as dynamic degrees of freedom. The conversions between nucleons and light nuclei during the collisions are incorporated dynamically via the breakup of light nuclei by a nucleon and their inverse reactions. We also include the Mott effect on light nuclei, i.e., a light nucleus would no longer be bound if the phase-space density of its surrounding nucleons is too large. With this kinetic approach, we obtain a reasonable description of the measured yields of light nuclei in central Au+Au collisions at energies of $0.25$ - $1.0A~\rm GeV$ by the FOPI collaboration. Our study also indicates that the observed enhancement of the $α$-particle yield at low incident energies can be attributed to a weaker Mott effect on the $α$-particle, which makes it more difficult to dissolve in nuclear medium, as a result of its much larger binding energy.

Surface properties of alkali silicate glasses: Influence of the modifiers

Using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the surface properties of lithium, sodium, and potassium silicate glasses containing 25 mole % of alkali oxide. The comparison of two types of surfaces, a melt-formed surface (MS) and a fracture surface (FS), demonstrates that the influence of the alkali modifier on the surface properties depends strongly on the nature of the surface. The FS exhibits a monotonic increase of modifier concentration with increasing alkali size while the MS shows a saturation of alkali concentration when going from Na to K glasses, indicating the presence of two competing mechanism that influence the properties of a MS. For the FS, we find that larger alkali ions reduce the concentration of under-coordinated Si atoms and increase the fraction of two-membered rings, implying an enhanced chemical reactivity of the surface. For both types of surfaces, the roughness is found to increase with alkali size, with the effect being more pronounced for the FS than for the MS. The height-height correlation functions of the surfaces show a scaling behavior that is independent of the alkali species considered: The ones for the MS are compatible with the prediction of the frozen capillary wave theory while the ones for the FS show a logarithmic growth, i.e., on the nanoscale these surfaces are not self-affine fractals. The influence of the modifier on the surface properties are rationalized in terms of the interplay between multiple factors involving the size of the ions, bond strength, and charge balance on the surface.

A robust design of time-varying internal model principle-based control for ultra-precision tracking in a direct-drive servo stage

This paper proposes a robust design of the time-varying internal model principle-based control (TV-IMPC) for tracking sophisticated references generated by linear time-varying (LTV) autonomous systems. The existing TV-IMPC design usually requires a complete knowledge of the plant I/O (input/output) model, leading to the lack of structural robustness. To tackle this issue, we, in the paper, design a gray-box extended state observer (ESO) to estimate and compensate unknown model uncertainties and external disturbances. By means of the ESO feedback, the plant model is kept as nominal, and hence the structural robustness is achieved for the time-varying internal model. It is shown that the proposed design has bounded ESO estimation errors, which can be further adjusted by modifying the corresponding control gains. To stabilize the ESO-based TV-IMPC, a time-varying stabilizer is developed by employing Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Extensive simulation and experimental studies are conducted on a direct-drive servo stage to validate the proposed robust TV-IMPC with ultra-precision tracking performance ($\sim 60$nm RMSE out of $\pm80$mm stroke).

Sequence-Based Target Coin Prediction for Cryptocurrency Pump-and-Dump

With the proliferation of pump-and-dump schemes (P&Ds) in the cryptocurrency market, it becomes imperative to detect such fraudulent activities in advance to alert potentially susceptible investors. In this paper, we focus on predicting the pump probability of all coins listed in the target exchange before a scheduled pump time, which we refer to as the target coin prediction task. Firstly, we conduct a comprehensive study of the latest 709 P&D events organized in Telegram from Jan. 2019 to Jan. 2022. Our empirical analysis reveals some interesting patterns of P&Ds, such as that pumped coins exhibit intra-channel homogeneity and inter-channel heterogeneity. Here channel refers a form of group in Telegram that is frequently used to coordinate P&D events. This observation inspires us to develop a novel sequence-based neural network, dubbed SNN, which encodes a channel's P&D event history into a sequence representation via the positional attention mechanism to enhance the prediction accuracy. Positional attention helps to extract useful information and alleviates noise, especially when the sequence length is long. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness and generalizability of proposed methods. Additionally, we release the code and P&D dataset on GitHub: https://github.com/Bayi-Hu/Pump-and-Dump-Detection-on-Cryptocurrency, and regularly update the dataset.

Multi-pooling 3D Convolutional Neural Network for fMRI Classification of Visual Brain States

Neural decoding of visual object classification via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data is challenging and is vital to understand underlying brain mechanisms. This paper proposed a multi-pooling 3D convolutional neural network (MP3DCNN) to improve fMRI classification accuracy. MP3DCNN is mainly composed of a three-layer 3DCNN, where the first and second layers of 3D convolutions each have a branch of pooling connection. The results showed that this model can improve the classification accuracy for categorical (face vs. object), face sub-categorical (male face vs. female face), and object sub-categorical (natural object vs. artificial object) classifications from 1.684% to 14.918% over the previous study in decoding brain mechanisms.

pgm: A Python package for free energy calculations within the phonon gas model

The quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) is a powerful method that uses the volume dependence of non-interacting phonons to compute the free energy of materials at high pressures (P) and temperatures (T). However, anharmonicity, electronic excitations in metals, or both, introduce an intrinsic T-dependence on phonon frequencies, rendering the QHA inadequate. Here we present a Python code, pgm, to compute the free energy and thermodynamic property within the phonon gas model (PGM) that uses T-dependent phonon quasiparticle frequencies. In this case, the vibrational contribution to the Helmholtz free energy is obtained by integrating the vibrational entropy, which can be readily calculated for a system of phonon quasiparticles. Other thermodynamic properties are then obtained from standard thermodynamic relations. We demonstrate the successful applications of pgm to two cases of geophysical significance: cubic CaSiO3-perovskite (cCaPv), a strongly anharmonic insulator and the third most abundant phase of the Earth's lower mantle, and NiAs-type (B8) FeO, a partially covalent-metallic system. This is the oxide endmember of a recently discovered iron-rich Fe$_n$O alloy phase likely to exit in the Earth's inner core.

Multiplexed Photoinjector Optimization for High-Repetition-Rate Free-Electron Lasers

The multiplexing capabilities of superconducting X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) have gained much attention in recent years. The demanding requirements for photon properties from multiple undulator lines necessitate more flexible beam manipulation techniques to achieve the goal of "beam on demand". In this paper, we investigate a multiplexed configuration for the photoinjector of high-repetition-rate FELs that aims to simultaneously provide low-emittance electron beams of different charges. A parallel, multi-objective genetic algorithm is implemented for the photoinjector parameter optimization. The proposed configuration could drastically enhance the flexibility of beam manipulation to improve multiplexing capabilities and realize the full potential of the facility.

The performance of SiPM-based gamma-ray detector (GRD) of GECAM-C

As a new member of GECAM mission, the GECAM-C (also called High Energy Burst Searcher, HEBS) is a gamma-ray all-sky monitor onboard SATech-01 satellite, which was launched on July 27th, 2022 to detect gamma-ray transients from 6 keV to 6 MeV, such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), high energy counterpart of Gravitational Waves (GWs) and Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs). Together with GECAM-A and GECAM-B launched in December 2020, GECAM-C will greatly improve the monitoring coverage, localization, as well as temporal and spectral measurements of gamma-ray transients. GECAM-C employs 12 SiPM-based Gamma-Ray Detectors (GRDs) to detect gamma-ray transients . In this paper, we firstly give a brief description of the design of GECAM-C GRDs, and then focus on the on-ground tests and in-flight performance of GRDs. We also did the comparison study of the SiPM in-flight performance between GECAM-C and GECAM-B. The results show GECAM-C GRD works as expected and is ready to make scientific observations.

Cost-minimization predictive energy management of a postal-delivery fuel cell electric vehicle with intelligent battery State-of-Charge Planner

Fuel cell electric vehicles have earned substantial attentions in recent decades due to their high-efficiency and zero-emission features, while the high operating costs remain the major barrier towards their large-scale commercialization. In such context, this paper aims to devise an energy management strategy for an urban postal-delivery fuel cell electric vehicle for operating cost mitigation. First, a data-driven dual-loop spatial-domain battery state-of-charge reference estimator is designed to guide battery energy depletion, which is trained by real-world driving data collected in postal delivery missions. Then, a fuzzy C-means clustering enhanced Markov speed predictor is constructed to project the upcoming velocity. Lastly, combining the state-of-charge reference and the forecasted speed, a model predictive control-based cost-optimization energy management strategy is established to mitigate vehicle operating costs imposed by energy consumption and power-source degradations. Validation results have shown that 1) the proposed strategy could mitigate the operating cost by 4.43% and 7.30% in average versus benchmark strategies, denoting its superiority in term of cost-reduction and 2) the computation burden per step of the proposed strategy is averaged at 0.123ms, less than the sampling time interval 1s, proving its potential of real-time applications.

Cross calibration of gamma-ray detectors (GRD) of GECAM-C

The gamma-ray detectors (GRDs) of GECAM-C onborad SATech-01 satellite is designed to monitor gamma-ray transients all over the sky from 6 keV to 6 MeV. The energy response matrix is the key to do spectral measurements of bursts, which is usually generated from GEANT4 simulation and partially verified by the ground calibration. In this work, energy response matrix of GECAM-C GRD is cross-calibrated with Fermi/GBM and Swift/BAT using a sample of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters (SGRs). The calibration results show there is a good agreement between GECAM-C and other reasonably well calibrated instrument (i.e. Fermi/GBM and Swift/BAT). We also find that different GRD detectors of GECAM-C also show consistency with each other. All these results indicate that GECAM-C GRD can provide reliable spectral measurements.

Design and Verification of a Flat-Top Beam Shaper Utilizing Spherical Lenses

We propose a novel coaxial spherical-lens shaping system to achieve a flat-top focus profile by exploiting the spherical aberration of the lens. The well-known aspherical-lens shaping system is compared to ours, and a comparison of etching on silicon is conducted between a Gaussian beam and the one shaped by the proposed system. Analytical and experimental results show that the proposed system is able to achieve flat-top beam shaping using only spherical lenses. Compared with the existing systems, our proposed one is capable of shaping Gaussian beams with different wavelengths and waist radii. Furthermore, the shaped one obtained by ours is the flat-top beam with extended depth of focus. This letter provides an efficient and precise flat-top beam shaping scheme for optics and laser technology, and increases the potential of spherical lenses in the field of laser shaping.

A Localization Method of High Energy Transients for All-Sky Gamma-Ray Monitor

Fast and reliable localization of high-energy transients is crucial for characterizing the burst properties and guiding the follow-up observations. Localization based on the relative counts of different detectors has been widely used for all-sky gamma-ray monitors. There are two major methods for this counts distribution localization: $χ^{2}$ minimization method and the Bayesian method. Here we propose a modified Bayesian method that could take advantage of both the accuracy of the Bayesian method and the simplicity of the $χ^{2}$ method. With comprehensive simulations, we find that our Bayesian method with Poisson likelihood is generally more applicable for various bursts than $χ^{2}$ method, especially for weak bursts. We further proposed a location-spectrum iteration approach based on the Bayesian inference, which could alleviate the problems caused by the spectral difference between the burst and location templates. Our method is very suitable for scenarios with limited computation resources or time-sensitive applications, such as in-flight localization software, and low-latency localization for rapid follow-up observations.

Ultra-compact attosecond X-ray free-electron lasers utilizing unique beams from plasma-based acceleration and an optical undulator

Accelerator-based X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are the latest addition to the revolutionary tools of discovery for the 21st century. The two major components of an XFEL are an accelerator-produced electron beam and a magnetic undulator which tend to be kilometer-scale long and expensive. Here, we present an ultra-compact scheme to produce 10s of attosecond X-ray pulses with several GW peak power utilizing a novel aspect of the FEL instability using a highly chirped, pre-bunched and ultra-bright electron beam from a plasma-based accelerator interacting with an optical undulator. The self-selection of electrons from the combination of a highly chirped and pre-bunched beam leads to the stable generation of attosecond X-ray pulses. Furthermore, two-color attosecond pulses with sub-femtosecond separation can be produced by adjusting the energy distribution of the electron beam so that multiple FEL resonances occur at different locations within the beam. Such a tunable coherent attosecond X-ray sources may open up a new area of attosecond science enabled by X-ray attosecond pump/probe techniques.

Intermediate-range order governs dynamics in dense colloidal liquids

The conventional wisdom is that liquids are completely disordered and lack non-trivial structure beyond nearest-neighbor distances. Recent observations have upended this view and demonstrated that the microstructure in liquids is surprisingly rich and plays a critical role in numerous physical, biological, and industrial processes. However, approaches to uncover this structure are either system-specific or yield results that are not physically intuitive. Here, through single-particle resolved three-dimensional confocal microscope imaging and the use of a recently introduced four-point correlation function, we show that bidisperse colloidal liquids have a highly non-trivial structure comprising alternating layers with icosahedral and dodecahedral order, which extends well-beyond nearest-neighbor distances and grows with supercooling. By quantifying the dynamics of the system on the particle level, we establish that it is this intermediate-range order, and not the short-range order, which has a one-to-one correlation with dynamical heterogeneities, a property directly related to the relaxation dynamics of glassy liquids. Our experimental findings provide a direct and much sought-after link between the structure and dynamics of liquids and pave the way for probing the consequences of this intermediate-range order in other liquid state processes.

Kirigami-Inspired Thermal Regulator

One of the current challenges in nanoscience is tailoring phononic devices, such as thermal regulators and thermal computing. This has long been a rather elusive task because the thermal-switching ratio is not as high as electronic analogs. Mapping from a topological kirigami assembly, nitrogen-doped porous graphene metamaterials on the nanoscale are inversely designed with a thermal-switching ratio of 27.79, which is more than double the value of previous work. We trace this behavior to the chiral folding-unfolding deformation, resulting in a metal-insulator transition. This study provides a nanomaterial design paradigm to bridge the gap between kinematics and functional metamaterials that motivates the development of high-performance thermal regulators.

Decentralized ADMM with Compressed and Event-Triggered Communication

This paper focuses on the decentralized optimization problem, where agents in a network cooperate to minimize the sum of their local objective functions by information exchange and local computation. Based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), we propose CC-DQM, a communication-efficient decentralized second-order optimization algorithm that combines compressed communication with event-triggered communication. Specifically, agents are allowed to transmit the compressed message only when the current primal variables have changed greatly compared to its last estimate. Moreover, to relieve the computation cost, the update of Hessian is scheduled by the trigger condition. To maintain exact linear convergence under compression, we compress the difference between the information to be transmitted and its estimate by a general contractive compressor. Theoretical analysis shows that CC-DQM can still achieve an exact linear convergence, despite the existence of compression error and intermittent communication, if the objective functions are strongly convex and smooth. Finally, we validate the performance of CC-DQM by numerical experiments.

Two-dimensional Heisenberg models with materials-dependent superexchange interactions

The two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals ferromagnetic semiconductors, such as CrI$_3$ and Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, and the 2D ferromagnetic metals, such as Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ and MnSe$_2$, have been obtained in recent experiments and attracted a lot of attentions. The superexchange interaction has been suggested to dominate the magnetic interactions in these 2D magnetic systems. In the usual theoretical studies, the expression of the 2D Heisenberg models were fixed by hand due to experiences. Here, we propose a method to determine the expression of the 2D Heisenberg models by counting the possible superexchange paths with the density functional theory (DFT) and Wannier function calculations. With this method, we obtain a 2D Heisenberg model with six different nearest-neighbor exchange coupling constants for the 2D ferromagnetic metal Cr$_3$Te$_6$, which is very different for the crystal structure of Cr atoms in Cr$_3$Te$_6$. The calculated Curie temperature Tc = 328 K is close to the Tc = 344 K of 2D Cr$_3$Te$_6$ reported in recent experiment. In addition, we predict two stable 2D ferromagnetic semiconductors Cr$_3$O$_6$ and Mn$_3$O$_6$ sharing the same crystal structure of Cr$_3$Te$_6$. The similar Heisenberg models are obtained for 2D Cr$_3$O$_6$ and Mn$_3$O$_6$, where the calculated Tc is 218 K and 208 K, respectively. Our method offers a general approach to determine the expression of Heisenberg models for these 2D magnetic semiconductors and metals, and builds up a solid basis for further studies.
