Khaos: The Impact of Inter-procedural Code Obfuscation on Binary Diffing Techniques

Software obfuscation techniques can prevent binary diffing techniques from locating vulnerable code by obfuscating the third-party code, to achieve the purpose of protecting embedded device software. With the rapid development of binary diffing techniques, they can achieve more and more accurate function matching and identification by extracting the features within the function. This makes existing software obfuscation techniques, which mainly focus on the intra-procedural code obfuscation, no longer effective. In this paper, we propose a new inter-procedural code obfuscation mechanism Khaos, which moves the code across functions to obfuscate the function by using compilation optimizations. Two obfuscation primitives are proposed to separate and aggregate the function, which are called fission and fusion respectively. A prototype of Khaos is implemented based on the LLVM compiler and evaluated on a large number of real-world programs including SPEC CPU 2006 & 2017, CoreUtils, JavaScript engines, etc. Experimental results show that Khaos outperforms existing code obfuscations and can significantly reduce the accuracy rates of five state-of-the-art binary diffing techniques (less than 19%) with lower runtime overhead (less than 7%).

Uplink Precoding Design for Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Iteratively Weighted MMSE

In this paper, we investigate a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output system with both access points and user equipments equipped with multiple antennas over the Weichselberger Rayleigh fading channel. We study the uplink spectral efficiency (SE) for the fully centralized processing scheme and large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) scheme. To further improve the SE performance, we design the uplink precoding schemes based on the weighted sum SE maximization. Since the weighted sum SE maximization problem is not jointly over all optimization variables, two efficient uplink precoding schemes based on Iteratively Weighted sum-Minimum Mean Square Error (I-WMMSE) algorithms, which rely on the iterative minimization of weighted MSE, are proposed for two processing schemes investigated. Furthermore, with maximum ratio combining applied in the LSFD scheme, we derive novel closed-form achievable SE expressions and optimal precoding schemes. Numerical results validate the proposed results and show that the I-WMMSE precoding schemes can achieve excellent sum SE performance with a large number of UE antennas.

Wasserstein convergence rates in the invariance principle for deterministic dynamical systems

In this paper, we consider the convergence rate with respect to Wasserstein distance in the invariance principle for deterministic nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, where both discrete time systems and flows are included. Our results apply to uniformly hyperbolic systems and large classes of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems including intermittent maps, Viana maps, finite horizon planar periodic Lorentz gases and others. Furthermore, as a nontrivial application to homogenization problem, we investigate the $\mathcal{W}_2$-convergence rate of a fast-slow discrete deterministic system to a stochastic differential equation.

Tunable Quantum Anomalous Hall Effects in Ferromagnetic van der Waals Heterostructures

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has unique advantages in topotronic applications, but it is still challenging to realize the QAHE with tunable magnetic and topological properties for building functional devices. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we predict that the in-plane magnetization induced QAHE with Chern numbers C = $\pm$1 and the out-of-plane magnetization induced QAHE with high Chern numbers C = $\pm$3 can be realized in a single material candidate, which is composed of van der Waals (vdW) coupled Bi and MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ monolayers. The switching between different phases of QAHE can be controllable by multiple ways, such as applying strain or (weak) magnetic field or twisting the vdW materials. The prediction of an experimentally available material system hosting robust, highly tunable QAHE will stimulate great research interest in the field. Our work opens a new avenue for the realization of tunable QAHE and provides a practical material platform for the development of topological electronics.

Hydrogen isotope separation using graphene-based membranes in liquid water

Hydrogen isotope separation has been effectively achieved using gaseous H2/D2 filtered through graphene/Nafion composite membranes. Nevertheless, deuteron nearly does not exist in the form of gaseous D2 in nature but in liquid water. Thus, it is a more feasible way to separate and enrich deuterium from water. Herein we have successfully transferred monolayer graphene to a rigid and porous polymer substrate PITEM (polyimide tracked film), which could avoid the swelling problem of the Nafion substrate, as well as keep the integrity of graphene. Meanwhile, defects in large area of CVD graphene could be successfully repaired by interfacial polymerization resulting in high separation factor. Moreover, a new model was proposed for the proton transport mechanism through monolayer graphene based on the kinetic isotope effect (KIE). In this model, graphene plays the significant role in the H/D separation process by completely breaking the O-H/O-D bond, which can maximize the KIE leading to prompted H/D separation performance. This work suggests a promising application of using monolayer graphene in industry and proposes a pronounced understanding of proton transport in graphene

Search for heavy Majorana neutrinos at future lepton colliders

The nonzero neutrino mass can be a signal for new physics beyond the standard model. To explain the tiny neutrino mass, we can extend the standard model with right-handed Majorana neutrinos in a low-scale seesaw mechanism, while the CP violation effect can be induced due to the CP phase in the interference of heavy Majorana neutrinos. The existence of heavy Majorana neutrinos may lead to lepton number violation processes, which can be used as a probe to search for the signal of heavy Majorana neutrinos. In this paper, we focus on the CP violation effect related to two generations of heavy Majorana neutrinos for $15$ GeV $<m_N<$ $70$ GeV in the pair production of W bosons and rare decays. It is valuable to investigate the Majorana neutrino production signals and the related CP violation effects in the W boson rare decays at future lepton colliders.

High-order nonlinear terahertz probing of the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$: Third- and fifth-order harmonic generation

We report on high-order harmonic generation in the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ driven by intense terahertz electromagnetic pulses. Third- and fifth-order harmonics are resolved in time domain and investigated as a function of temperature and in applied magnetic fields crossing the superconducting phase boundary. The high-order harmonics in the superconducting phase reflects nonequilibrium dynamics of the superconducting order parameter in MgB$_2$, which is probed via nonlinear coupling to the terahertz field. The observed temperature and field dependence of the nonlinear response allows to establish the superconducting phase diagram.

ConQueR: Query Contrast Voxel-DETR for 3D Object Detection

Although DETR-based 3D detectors can simplify the detection pipeline and achieve direct sparse predictions, their performance still lags behind dense detectors with post-processing for 3D object detection from point clouds. DETRs usually adopt a larger number of queries than GTs (e.g., 300 queries v.s. 40 objects in Waymo) in a scene, which inevitably incur many false positives during inference. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective sparse 3D detector, named Query Contrast Voxel-DETR (ConQueR), to eliminate the challenging false positives, and achieve more accurate and sparser predictions. We observe that most false positives are highly overlapping in local regions, caused by the lack of explicit supervision to discriminate locally similar queries. We thus propose a Query Contrast mechanism to explicitly enhance queries towards their best-matched GTs over all unmatched query predictions. This is achieved by the construction of positive and negative GT-query pairs for each GT, and a contrastive loss to enhance positive GT-query pairs against negative ones based on feature similarities. ConQueR closes the gap of sparse and dense 3D detectors, and reduces up to ~60% false positives. Our single-frame ConQueR achieves new state-of-the-art (sota) 71.6 mAPH/L2 on the challenging Waymo Open Dataset validation set, outperforming previous sota methods (e.g., PV-RCNN++) by over 2.0 mAPH/L2.

Determining spin-orbit coupling in graphene by quasiparticle interference imaging

Inducing and controlling spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in graphene is key to create topological states of matter, and for the realization of spintronic devices. Placing graphene onto a transition metal dichalcogenide is currently the most successful strategy to achieve this goal, but there is no consensus as to the nature and the magnitude of the induced SOC. Here, we show that the presence of backscattering in graphene-on-WSe$_2$ heterostructures can be used to probe SOC and to determine its strength quantitatively, by imaging quasiparticle interference with a scanning tunneling microscope. A detailed theoretical analysis of the Fourier transform of quasiparticle interference images reveals that the induced SOC consists of a valley-Zeeman ($λ_{\text{vZ}}\approx 2$ meV) and a Rashba ($λ_\text{R}\approx 15$ meV) term, one order of magnitude larger than what theory predicts, but in excellent agreement with earlier transport experiments. The validity of our analysis is confirmed by measurements on a 30 degree twist angle heterostructure that exhibits no backscattering, as expected from symmetry considerations. Our results demonstrate a viable strategy to determine SOC quantitatively by imaging quasiparticle interference.

Fast DistilBERT on CPUs

Transformer-based language models have become the standard approach to solving natural language processing tasks. However, industry adoption usually requires the maximum throughput to comply with certain latency constraints that prevents Transformer models from being used in production. To address this gap, model compression techniques such as quantization and pruning may be used to improve inference efficiency. However, these compression techniques require specialized software to apply and deploy at scale. In this work, we propose a new pipeline for creating and running Fast Transformer models on CPUs, utilizing hardware-aware pruning, knowledge distillation, quantization, and our own Transformer inference runtime engine with optimized kernels for sparse and quantized operators. We demonstrate the efficiency of our pipeline by creating a Fast DistilBERT model showing minimal accuracy loss on the question-answering SQuADv1.1 benchmark, and throughput results under typical production constraints and environments. Our results outperform existing state-of-the-art Neural Magic's DeepSparse runtime performance by up to 50% and up to 4.1x performance speedup over ONNX Runtime. Research on Early Warning and NB-IoT Real-time Monitoring System for Radiation Source Shedding of Gamma Flaw Detection Machine

The system takes the embedded system single chip as the core, and organizes the gamma ray induction module, keying switch, radiation source braid locking mechanism, on-site alarm equipment, NB-IoT communication module, GPS positioning system and other related equipment to realize real-time operators warning and remote alarming to the monitoring platform. Thus, timely management of the fallen radiation source can be realized. What's more, position of radiation source braid is monitored by radiation source braid locking mechanism, gamma-ray induction module and keying switch. This idea solves the bottleneck problem of difficulty in transmitting real-time remote monitoring signal by NB-IoT technology. Single-chip microcontroller is innovatively embedded around the radiation source to monitor whether the source falls off. As a result, when part or all of the source braid are not returned to the storage location of the flaw detector, the gamma ray induction module, keying switch, and radiation source braid locking mechanism remind the operator of the dangerous situation. At the same time, NB-IoT transmission system alarms companies and regulators of safety risks. In conclusion, radiation source can be found timely when it falls off, to avoid radiation accident. Two bottlenecks related to installing GPS positioning system can be solved, that the GPS positioning system is installed on the flaw detector, and the radioactive source is still unable to be controlled, and that the GPS positioning system requires power to transmit the signal back to the regulatory platform or to the platform of the flaw detection enterprise. This article's ideas can solve this problem through the advantages of NB-IoT.

Spectral CT Reconstruction via Low-rank Representation and Structure Preserving Regularization

With the development of computed tomography (CT) imaging technology, it is possible to acquire multi-energy data by spectral CT. Being different from conventional CT, the X-ray energy spectrum of spectral CT is cutting into several narrow bins which leads to the result that only a part of photon can be collected in each individual energy channel, which cause the image qualities to be severely degraded by noise and artifacts. To address this problem, we propose a spectral CT reconstruction algorithm based on low-rank representation and structure preserving regularization in this paper. To make full use of the prior knowledge about both the inter-channel correlation and the sparsity in gradient domain of inner-channel data, this paper combines a low-rank correlation descriptor with a structure extraction operator as priori regularization terms for spectral CT reconstruction. Furthermore, a split-Bregman based iterative algorithm is developed to solve the reconstruction model. Finally, we propose a multi-channel adaptive parameters generation strategy according to CT values of each individual energy channel. Experimental results on numerical simulations and real mouse data indicate that the proposed algorithm achieves higher accuracy on both reconstruction and material decomposition than the methods based on simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART), total variation minimization (TVM), total variation with low-rank (LRTV), and spatial-spectral cube matching frame (SSCMF). Compared with SART, our algorithm improves the feature similarity (FSIM) by 40.4% on average for numerical simulation reconstruction, whereas TVM, LRTV, and SSCMF correspond to 26.1%, 28.2%, and 29.5%, respectively.

STILN: A Novel Spatial-Temporal Information Learning Network for EEG-based Emotion Recognition

The spatial correlations and the temporal contexts are indispensable in Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based emotion recognition. However, the learning of complex spatial correlations among several channels is a challenging problem. Besides, the temporal contexts learning is beneficial to emphasize the critical EEG frames because the subjects only reach the prospective emotion during part of stimuli. Hence, we propose a novel Spatial-Temporal Information Learning Network (STILN) to extract the discriminative features by capturing the spatial correlations and temporal contexts. Specifically, the generated 2D power topographic maps capture the dependencies among electrodes, and they are fed to the CNN-based spatial feature extraction network. Furthermore, Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) recalibrates the weights of power topographic maps to emphasize the crucial brain regions and frequency bands. Meanwhile, Batch Normalizations (BNs) and Instance Normalizations (INs) are appropriately combined to relieve the individual differences. In the temporal contexts learning, we adopt the Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Network (Bi-LSTM) network to capture the dependencies among the EEG frames. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, subject-independent experiments are conducted on the public DEAP dataset. The proposed method has achieved the outstanding performance, and the accuracies of arousal and valence classification have reached 0.6831 and 0.6752 respectively.

Temporal-spatial Representation Learning Transformer for EEG-based Emotion Recognition

Both the temporal dynamics and spatial correlations of Electroencephalogram (EEG), which contain discriminative emotion information, are essential for the emotion recognition. However, some redundant information within the EEG signals would degrade the performance. Specifically, the subjects reach prospective intense emotions for only a fraction of the stimulus duration. Besides, it is a challenge to extract discriminative features from the complex spatial correlations among a number of electrodes. To deal with the problems, we propose a transformer-based model to robustly capture temporal dynamics and spatial correlations of EEG. Especially, temporal feature extractors which share the weight among all the EEG channels are designed to adaptively extract dynamic context information from raw signals. Furthermore, multi-head self-attention mechanism within the transformers could adaptively localize the vital EEG fragments and emphasize the essential brain regions which contribute to the performance. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct the experiments on two public datasets, DEAP and MAHNOBHCI. The results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves outstanding performance on arousal and valence classification.

Efficient Calculation of NMR Shielding Constants Using Composite Method Approximations and Locally Dense Basis Sets

This paper presents a systematic study of applying composite method approximations with locally dense basis sets (LDBS) to efficiently calculate NMR shielding constants in small and medium-sized molecules. The pcSseg-n series of basis sets are shown to have similar accuracy to the pcS-n series when n $\geq1$ and can slightly reduce compute costs. We identify two different LDBS partition schemes that perform very effectively for density functional calculations. We select a large subset of the recent NS372 database containing 290 H, C, N, and O shielding values evaluated by reference methods on 106 molecules to carefully assess methods of the high, medium, and low compute costs to make practical recommendations. Our assessment covers conventional electronic structure methods (DFT and wavefunction) with global basis calculations, as well as their use in one of the satisfactory LDBS approaches, and a range of composite approaches, also with and without LDBS. Altogether 99 methods are evaluated. On this basis, we recommend different methods to reach three different levels of accuracy and time requirements across the four nuclei considered.

Mountain muon tomography using a liquid scintillator detector

Muon tomography (MT), based on atmospheric cosmic rays, is a promising technique suitable for nondestructive imaging of the internal structures of mountains. This method uses the measured flux distribution after attenuation, combined with the known muon angular and energy distributions and a 3D satellite map, to perform tomographic imaging of the density distribution inside a probed volume. A muon tomography station (MTS) requires direction-sensitive detectors with a high resolution for optimal tracking of incident cosmic-ray muons. The spherical liquid scintillator detector is one of the best candidates for this application due to its uniform detection efficiency for the whole $4π$ solid angle and its excellent ability to distinguish muon signals from the radioactive background via the difference in the energy deposit. This type of detector, with a 1.3~m diameter, was used in the Jinping Neutrino Experiment~(JNE). Its angular resolution is 4.9~degrees. Following the application of imaging for structures of Jinping Mountain with JNE published results based on the detector, we apply it to geological prospecting. For mountains below 1~km in height and 2.8~${\rm g}/{\rm cm}^3$ in the reference rock, we demonstrate that this kind of detector can image internal regions with densities of $\leq$ 2.1~${\rm g}/{\rm cm}^3$ or $\geq$ 3.5~${\rm g}/{\rm cm}^3$ and hundreds of meters in size.
