Evolution of Cataclysmic Variables with Binary-Driven Mass-Loss during Nova Eruptions

The discrepancies between observations and theoretical predictions of cataclysmic variables (CVs) suggest that there exists unknown angular momentum loss mechanism(s) besides magnetic braking and gravitational radiation. Mass loss due to nova eruptions belongs to the most likely candidates. While standard theory assumes that mass is lost in the form of radiation driven, optically thick wind (fast wind; FW), recent numerical simulations indicate that most of the mass loss is initiated and shaped by binary interaction. We explore the effect of this binary-driven mass-loss (BDML) on the CV evolutions assuming a major fraction of the lost mass leaves the system from the outer Lagrangian point. Different from the traditional continuous wind picture, we consider the mass loss process to be instantaneous, because the duration of nova eruptions is much shorter than the binary evolutionary timescale. Our detailed binary evolution calculations reveal the following results. (1) BDML seems able to provide extra angular momentum loss below the period gap. The mass transfer rates at a given orbital period occupy a large range, in agreement with the observed secular mass transfer rate distribution in CVs. (2) The enhanced mass transfer rates do not lead to runaway mass transfer process, and allow the white dwarfs to grow mass $\lesssim 0.1\,M_{\odot}$. (3) BDML can cause both positive and negative variations of the orbital period induced by nova eruptions, in line with observations, and can potentially explain the properties of some peculiar supersoft X-ray sources likely CAL 87, 1E 0035.4$-$7230, and RX J0537.7$-$7034.

Spin evolution of neutron stars in transient low-mass X-ray binaries

Millisecond pulsar + helium white dwarf (MSP+He WD) binaries are thought to have descended from neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). The NSs accreted from the progenitors of the WDs and their spin periods were accordingly accelerated to the equilibrium periods of order milliseconds. Thus, the initial spin periods of the ``recycled" NSs are critically determined by the mass transfer rate in the LMXB phase. However, the standard picture neglects the possible spin-down of the NSs when the donor star decouples from its Roche lobe at the end of the mass transfer, as well as the transient behavior of most LMXBs. Both imply more complicated spin evolution during the recycling process. In this work, we perform detailed calculations of the formation of MSP+He WD binaries. We take into account three magnetic braking (MB) prescriptions proposed in the literature, and examine the effects of both persistent and transient accretion. We find that the spin periods are not sensitively dependent on the efficiency of MB, but are considerably influenced by the accretion mode. In comparison with persistent accretion, transient accretion leads to shorter and longer spin periods of the NSs in narrow and wide systems, respectively. This may help account for the measured spin periods of MSPs in wide binaries, which seem to be longer than predicted by the persistent accretion model.

Securing FC-RIS and UAV Empowered Multiuser Communications Against a Randomly Flying Eavesdropper

This paper investigates a wireless network consisting of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) base station (BS), a fully-connected reconfigurable intelligent surface (FC-RIS), and multiple users, where the downlink signal can simultaneously be captured by an aerial eavesdropper at a random location. To improve the physical-layer security (PLS) of the considered downlink multiuser communications, we propose the fully-connected reconfigurable intelligent surface aided round-robin scheduling (FCR-RS) and the FC-RIS and ground channel state information (CSI) aided proportional fair scheduling (FCR-GCSI-PFS) schemes. Thereafter, we derive closed-form expressions of the zero secrecy rate probability (ZSRP). Numerical results not only validate the closed-form ZSRP analysis, but also verify that the proposed GCSI-PFS scheme obtains the same performance gain as the full-CSI-aided PFS in FC-RIS-aided communications. Furthermore, optimizing the hovering altitude remarkably enhances the PLS of the FC-RIS and UAV empowered multiuser communications.

AVM-SLAM: Semantic Visual SLAM with Multi-Sensor Fusion in a Bird's Eye View for Automated Valet Parking

Accurate localization in challenging garage environments -- marked by poor lighting, sparse textures, repetitive structures, dynamic scenes, and the absence of GPS -- is crucial for automated valet parking (AVP) tasks. Addressing these challenges, our research introduces AVM-SLAM, a cutting-edge semantic visual SLAM architecture with multi-sensor fusion in a bird's eye view (BEV). This novel framework synergizes the capabilities of four fisheye cameras, wheel encoders, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to construct a robust SLAM system. Unique to our approach is the implementation of a flare removal technique within the BEV imagery, significantly enhancing road marking detection and semantic feature extraction by convolutional neural networks for superior mapping and localization. Our work also pioneers a semantic pre-qualification (SPQ) module, designed to adeptly handle the challenges posed by environments with repetitive textures, thereby enhancing loop detection and system robustness. To demonstrate the effectiveness and resilience of AVM-SLAM, we have released a specialized multi-sensor and high-resolution dataset of an underground garage, accessible at https://yale-cv.github.io/avm-slam_dataset, encouraging further exploration and validation of our approach within similar settings.

MLS-Track: Multilevel Semantic Interaction in RMOT

The new trend in multi-object tracking task is to track objects of interest using natural language. However, the scarcity of paired prompt-instance data hinders its progress. To address this challenge, we propose a high-quality yet low-cost data generation method base on Unreal Engine 5 and construct a brand-new benchmark dataset, named Refer-UE-City, which primarily includes scenes from intersection surveillance videos, detailing the appearance and actions of people and vehicles. Specifically, it provides 14 videos with a total of 714 expressions, and is comparable in scale to the Refer-KITTI dataset. Additionally, we propose a multi-level semantic-guided multi-object framework called MLS-Track, where the interaction between the model and text is enhanced layer by layer through the introduction of Semantic Guidance Module (SGM) and Semantic Correlation Branch (SCB). Extensive experiments on Refer-UE-City and Refer-KITTI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework and it achieves state-of-the-art performance. Code and datatsets will be available.

On the Formation of GW190521-like Binary Black Hole Merger Systems

GW190521 is the most massive merging binary black hole (BBH) system detected so far. At least one of the component BHs was measured to lie within the pair-instability supernova (PISN) mass gap ($\sim 50-135\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$), making its formation a mystery. However, the transient observed signal allows alternative posterior distributions. There was suggestion that GW190521 could be an intermediate-mass ratio inspiral (IMRI), with the component masses $m_1\sim 170\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$ and $m_2\sim 16 \;{\rm M}_{\odot}$, happening to straddle the PISN mass gap. Under this framework, we perform binary population synthesis to explore the formation of GW190521-like systems via isolated binary evolution. We numerically calculate the binding energy parameter for massive stars at different metallicities, and employ them in our calculation for common envelope evolution. Our results prefer that the progenitor binaries formed in metal-poor environment with $\rm Z\leq0.0016$. The predicted merger rate density within redshift $z=1.1$ is $\sim 4\times 10^{-5}-5\times 10^{-2} \,\rm Gpc^{-3}yr^{-1}$. We expect that such events are potentially observable by upcoming both space and ground-based gravitational wave detectors.

Multi-similarity based Hyperrelation Network for few-shot segmentation

Few-shot semantic segmentation aims at recognizing the object regions of unseen categories with only a few annotated examples as supervision. The key to few-shot segmentation is to establish a robust semantic relationship between the support and query images and to prevent overfitting. In this paper, we propose an effective Multi-similarity Hyperrelation Network (MSHNet) to tackle the few-shot semantic segmentation problem. In MSHNet, we propose a new Generative Prototype Similarity (GPS), which together with cosine similarity can establish a strong semantic relation between the support and query images. The locally generated prototype similarity based on global feature is logically complementary to the global cosine similarity based on local feature, and the relationship between the query image and the supported image can be expressed more comprehensively by using the two similarities simultaneously. In addition, we propose a Symmetric Merging Block (SMB) in MSHNet to efficiently merge multi-layer, multi-shot and multi-similarity hyperrelational features. MSHNet is built on the basis of similarity rather than specific category features, which can achieve more general unity and effectively reduce overfitting. On two benchmark semantic segmentation datasets Pascal-5i and COCO-20i, MSHNet achieves new state-of-the-art performances on 1-shot and 5-shot semantic segmentation tasks.

Monocular 3D Fingerprint Reconstruction and Unwarping

Compared with contact-based fingerprint acquisition techniques, contactless acquisition has the advantages of less skin distortion, larger fingerprint area, and hygienic acquisition. However, perspective distortion is a challenge in contactless fingerprint recognition, which changes ridge orientation, frequency, and minutiae location, and thus causes degraded recognition accuracy. We propose a learning based shape from texture algorithm to reconstruct a 3D finger shape from a single image and unwarp the raw image to suppress perspective distortion. Experimental results on contactless fingerprint databases show that the proposed method has high 3D reconstruction accuracy. Matching experiments on contactless-contact and contactless-contactless matching prove that the proposed method improves matching accuracy.

Lodestar: Supporting Independent Learning and Rapid Experimentation Through Data-Driven Analysis Recommendations

Keeping abreast of current trends, technologies, and best practices in visualization and data analysis is becoming increasingly difficult, especially for fledgling data scientists. In this paper, we propose Lodestar, an interactive computational notebook that allows users to quickly explore and construct new data science workflows by selecting from a list of automated analysis recommendations. We derive our recommendations from directed graphs of known analysis states, with two input sources: one manually curated from online data science tutorials, and another extracted through semi-automatic analysis of a corpus of over 6,000 Jupyter notebooks. We evaluate Lodestar in a formative study guiding our next set of improvements to the tool. Our results suggest that users find Lodestar useful for rapidly creating data science workflows.

A Study of Magnetized White Dwarf + Helium Star Binary Evolution to Type Ia Supernovae

The white dwarf (WD) + helium (He) star binary channel plays an important role in the single degenerate scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Previous studies on the WD + main sequence star evolution have shown that the magnetic fields of WDs may significantly influence their accretion and nuclear burning processes. In this work we focus on the evolution of magnetized WD + He star binaries with detailed stellar evolution and binary population synthesis (BPS) calculations. In the case of magnetized WDs, the magnetic fields may disrupt the inner regions of the accretion disk, funnel the accretion flow onto the polar caps, and even confine helium burning within the caps.We find that, for WDs with sufficiently strong magnetic fields, the parameter space of the potential SN Ia progenitor systems shrinks toward shorter orbital periods and lower donor masses compared with that in the non-magnetized WD case. The reason is that the magnetic confinement usually works with relatively high mass transfer rates, which can trigger strong wind mass loss from the WD, thus limiting the He-rich mass accumulation efficiency. The surviving companion stars are likely of low-mass at the moment of the SN explosions, which can be regarded as a possible explanation for the non-detection of surviving companions after the SNe or inside the SN remnants. However, the corresponding birthrate of Galactic SNe Ia in our high-magnetic models is estimated to be ~(0.08-0.13) * 10^{-3} yr^{-1}( ~0.17-0.28 * 10^{-3}yr^{-1} for the non-magnetic models), significantly lower than the observed Galactic SN Ia birthrate.

Are there magnetars in high-mass X-ray binaries?

Magnetars form a special population of neutron stars with strong magnetic fields and long spin periods. About 30 magnetars and magnetar candidates known currently are probably isolated. But the possibility that magnetars are in binaries hasn't been excluded. In this work, we perform spin evolution of neutron stars with different magnetic fields in wind-fed high-mass X-ray binaries and compare the spin period distribution with observations, aiming to find magnetars in binaries. Our simulation shows that some of the neutron stars, which have long spin periods or in wide-separation systems, need strong magnetic fields to explain their spin evolution. This implies that there are probably magnetars in high-mass X-ray binaries. Moreover, this can further provide a theoretical basis for some unclear astronomical phenomena, such as the possible origin of periodic fast radio bursts from magnetars in binary systems.

Dense Registration and Mosaicking of Fingerprints by Training an End-to-End Network

Dense registration of fingerprints is a challenging task due to elastic skin distortion, low image quality, and self-similarity of ridge pattern. To overcome the limitation of handcraft features, we propose to train an end-to-end network to directly output pixel-wise displacement field between two fingerprints. The proposed network includes a siamese network for feature embedding, and a following encoder-decoder network for regressing displacement field. By applying displacement fields reliably estimated by tracing high quality fingerprint videos to challenging fingerprints, we synthesize a large number of training fingerprint pairs with ground truth displacement fields. In addition, based on the proposed registration algorithm, we propose a fingerprint mosaicking method based on optimal seam selection. Registration and matching experiments on FVC2004 databases, Tsinghua Distorted Fingerprint (TDF) database, and NIST SD27 latent fingerprint database show that our registration method outperforms previous dense registration methods in accuracy and efficiency. Mosaicking experiment on FVC2004 DB1 demonstrates that the proposed algorithm produced higher quality fingerprints than other algorithms which also validates the performance of our registration algorithm.

DataSite: Proactive Visual Data Exploration with Computation of Insight-based Recommendations

Effective data analysis ideally requires the analyst to have high expertise as well as high knowledge of the data. Even with such familiarity, manually pursuing all potential hypotheses and exploring all possible views is impractical. We present DataSite, a proactive visual analytics system where the burden of selecting and executing appropriate computations is shared by an automatic server-side computation engine. Salient features identified by these automatic background processes are surfaced as notifications in a feed timeline. DataSite effectively turns data analysis into a conversation between analyst and computer, thereby reducing the cognitive load and domain knowledge requirements. We validate the system with a user study comparing it to a recent visualization recommendation system, yielding significant improvement, particularly for complex analyses that existing analytics systems do not support well.

A Study of Wolf-Rayet stars Formed via Chemically Homogeneous Evolution

Using the stellar evolution code---Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), we investigate the evolution of massive stars with different rotational velocities and metallicities towards Wolf-Rayet stars. In our simulations, the initial rotating velocities are taken as 0, 250, 500 and 650 km s$^{-1}$, and the metallicities equal to 0.02, 0.014, 0.008, 0.006, 0.004 and 0.002. We show our rapid rotation models in the HR diagram compared with the observations. We find that the rotational mixing is less efficient at high metallicity, and these stars become Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars when the helium in their center is ignited. However, rapid rotating massive stars at low metallicity can easily evolve into WR stars due to the rotation resulted in chemically homogeneous evolution. This can explain the origin of single WR stars in galaxy at low metallicity. In our models, the observed SMC WR stars are consistent with the single-star evolution models. However at higher metallicities our single-star evolution models can only explain the luminous, hydrogen-rich WN stars and O stars (which are classified as WR stars previously).

A Randomly Expandable Method for Data Layout of RAID Storage Systems

With the increase of huge amounts of data in volume, velocity, and variety, the need for capacity of Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) storage systems is dramatically growing. However, the probability of disk failures in RAID storage systems is sharply high with the increase of program/erase cycles, read cycles, and retention time. Furthermore, they are faced with more challenges in fault tolerance, storage efficiency, computational complexity, and expandability. This article presents a novel data layout scheme for RAID storage System using Random Binary Extensive Code (RBEC), which are designed to ensure random expandability, high reliability, and availability of data in RAID storage systems. RBEC is a family of systematic code, in which the generator matrix consists of two submatrices with entries over GF(2), an identity matrix on the top, and another submatrix on the bottom. Compared with the existed approaches, the attractive advantages of our schemes include 1) they are completely implemented based on only simple eXclusive OR (XOR) operations and have systematic code property, 2) they can provide arbitrary fault tolerance, 3) their storage efficiency is quasi-optimal, and 4) data and parity disks of RAID storage systems can be randomly expanded according to practical requirements. Thus, our scheme is particularly suitable for RAID storage systems that need higher reliability, availability, and expandability.
