Killing Spinors for the Bosonic String

We obtain the effective action for the bosonic string with arbitrary Yang-Mills fields, up to the α' order, in general dimensions. The form of the action is determined by the requirement that the action admit well-defined Killing spinor equations, whose projected integrability conditions give rise to the full set of equations of motion. The success of the construction suggests that the hidden "pseudo-supersymmetry" associated with the Killing spinor equations may be a property of the bosonic string itself.

Pseudo-supersymmetry, Consistent Sphere Reduction and Killing Spinors for the Bosonic String

Certain supergravity theories admit a remarkable consistent dimensional reduction in which the internal space is a sphere. Examples include type IIB supergravity reduced on S^5, and eleven-dimensional supergravity reduced on S^4 or S^7. Consistency means that any solution of the dimensionally-reduced theory lifts to give a solution in the higher dimension. Although supersymmetry seems to play a role in the consistency of these reductions, it cannot be the whole story since consistent sphere reductions of non-supersymmetric theories are also known, such as the reduction of the effective action of the bosonic string in any dimension D on either a 3-sphere or a (D-3)-sphere, retaining the gauge bosons of SO(4) or SO(D-2) respectively. We show that although there is no supersymmetry, there is nevertheless a natural Killing spinor equation for the D-dimensional bosonic string. A projection of the full integrability condition for these Killing spinors gives rise to the bosonic equations of motion (just as happens in the supergravity examples). Thus it appears that by extending the notion of supersymmetry to "pseudo-supersymmetry" in this way, one may be able to obtain a broader understanding of a relation between Killing spinors and consistent sphere reductions.

Instability by Chern-Simons and/or Transgressions

It was demonstrated recently that there is an upper bound of the Chern-Simons coupling of the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory, beyond which the electrically charged AdS_2 \times S^3 vacuum solution becomes unstable. We generalize the result to a general class of gravity theories involving Chern-Simons and/or transgression terms and find their upper bounds for stability. We show that supergravities with AdS \times Sphere vacua satisfy the bounds.

On M-Theory Embedding of Topologically Massive Gravity

We show that topologically massive gravity can be obtained by the consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction from recently constructed seven-dimensional gravity with topological terms. The internal four-manifold should be Einstein with the Pontryagin four-form constantly proportional to the volume form. We also discuss the possible lift of the system to D=11. This enables us to connect the mass parameter \tildeμin D=3 to the M5-brane charge. The dimensionless quantity 3/(G\tilde μ) is discrete and proportional to N, where N is the number of M5-branes.

Constructing Calabi-Yau Metrics From Hyperkahler Spaces

Recently, a metric construction for the Calabi-Yau 3-folds from a four-dimensional hyperkahler space by adding a complex line bundle was proposed. We extend the construction by adding a U(1) factor to the holomorphic (3,0)-form, and obtain the explicit formalism for a generic hyperkahler base. We find that a discrete choice arises: the U(1) factor can either depend solely on the fibre coordinates or vanish. In each case, the metric is determined by one differential equation for the modified Kahler potential. As explicit examples, we obtain the generalized resolutions (up to orbifold singularity) of the cone of the Einstein-Sasaki spaces Y^{p,q}. We also obtain a large class of new singular CY3 metrics with SU(2)\times U(1) or SU(2)\times U(1)^2 isometries.

Calabi-Yau (p+1)-folds from p-folds

We establish the general formalism for constructing metrics of Calabi-Yau (p+1)-folds in terms of that of a p-fold by adding a complex-line bundle. We present a few explicit low-lying examples. We further consider holomorphic linearization and obtain the six-dimensional analogue of the Gibbons-Hawking instanton. Whilst the Kahler potential for the Gibbons-Hawking instanton is given by the harmonic function of a three-dimensional flat space, for the generalized solution it is related to the harmonic functions of certain three-dimensional non-flat spaces that are direct products of R and two-dimensional Kahler spaces.

The long-range interactions between branes in diverse dimensions

We calculate the long-range interactions between two simple branes placed parallel at a separation in diverse dimensions via an effective field theory approach. We also compute for the first time the explicit long-range interaction between two D-branes with each carrying a world-volume non-abelian magnetic flux in three special cases, respectively. In particular, we demonstrate that the half-string creation between a D$_0$-brane and a D$_8$-brane continues to hold even in the present context, therefore lending further support to the previous assertion of this. Our computations re-raise also the issue in one case on whether so constructed (D$_0$, D$_8$) bound state is actually a marginal one.

Most General Spherically Symmetric M2-branes and Type IIB Strings

We obtain the most general spherically symmetric M2-branes and type IIB strings, with \R^{1,2}\times SO(8) and \R^{1,1}\times SO(8) isometries respectively. We find that there are twelve different classes of M2-branes, and we study their curvature properties. In particular we obtain new smooth M2-brane wormholes that connect two asymptotic regions: one is flat and the other can be either flat or AdS_4\times S^7. We find that these wormholes are traversable with certain time-like trajectories. We also obtain the most general Ricci-flat solutions in five dimensions with \R^{1,1}\times SO(3) isometries.

Microscopic description of the chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid at the fractional quantum Hall edge

The effective field theory of the fractional quantum Hall edge is reformulated from microscopic dynamics. Noncommutative Chern-Simons theory is a microscopic description for the quantum Hall fluid. We use it for reference. Considering relabeling symmetry of the electrons and incompressibility of the fluid, we obtain a constraint and derive a chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory containing interaction terms. We calculate one-loop corrections to the phonon and electron propagators and get a new tunneling exponent. It agrees with experiments.

GL(n,R) Wormholes and Waves in Diverse Dimensions

We construct the most general Ricci-flat metrics in (D+n) dimensions that preserve the R^{1,n-1}\times SO(D) isometry. The equations of motion are governed by the system of a GL(n,\R)/SO(1,n-1) scalar coset coupled to D-dimensional gravity. Among the solutions, we find a large class of smooth Lorentzian wormholes that connect two asymptotic flat spacetimes. In addition, we obtain new vacuum tachyonic wave solutions in D\ge 4 dimensions, which fit the general definition of pp-waves in that there exists a covariantly constant null vector. The momenta of the tachyon waves are larger than their ADM masses. The world-volume of the tachyon wave is R^{1,2}, instead of R^{1,1} for the usual vacuum pp-wave. We show that the tachyon wave solutions admit no Killing spinors, except in D=4, in which case it preserves half of the supersymmetry. We also obtain a general class of p-brane wormhole and tachyon wave solutions where the R^{1,n-1} part of the spacetime lies in the the world-volume of the p-branes. These include examples of M-branes and D3-brane. Furthermore, we obtain AdS tachyon waves in D\ge 4 dimensions.

Non-supersymmetric D1/D5, F/NS5 and closed string tachyon condensation

We construct the intersecting non-supersymmetric (non-susy) D1/D5 solution of type IIB string theory. While, as usual, the solution is charged under an electric two-form and an electric six-form gauge field, it also contains a non-susy chargeless (non-BPS) D0-brane. The S-dual of this solution is the non-susy F/NS5 solution. We show how these solutions nicely interpolate between the corresponding black (or non-extremal) solutions and the Kaluza-Klein (KK) "bubble of nothing" (BON) by continuously changing some parameters characterizing the solutions from one set of values to another. We show, by a time symmetric general bubble initial data analysis, that the final bubbles in these cases are static and stable and the interpolations can be physically interpreted as closed string tachyon condensation. As special cases, we recover the transition of two charge black F-string to BON, considered by Horowitz, and also the transition from AdS$_3$ black hole to global AdS$_3$.

Intersecting non-SUSY branes and closed string tachyon condensation

Following \cite{Bai:2006vv} we here consider the supergravity solutions representing the charged non-supersymmetric $p$-brane (for $1\leq p \leq 6$) intersecting with chargeless non-supersymmetric 1-brane and 0-brane of type II string theories. We show how these solutions nicely interpolate between black $p$-branes and the Kaluza-Klein "bubble of nothing" (BON) by continuously varying some parameters characterizing the solutions from one set of values to another. By performing a time symmetric general bubble initial data analysis, we show that the interpolation implies a possible transition from black $p$-branes to KK BON only for $p\leq 4$, as in these cases there exist locally stable static bubbles under certain conditions. However, for $p>4$, black branes always decay into dynamical bubbles. Contrary to what is known in the literature, we argue that under certain conditions, the mechanism causing this transition to stable static bubbles can be the closed string tachyon condensation for all $p\leq 4$. We also show that the configurations indeed contain (chargeless) F-strings required for the closed string tachyons to appear causing the transitions to occur.

Hierarchy Construction of Quantum Hall States and Non-Commutative Chern-Simons Theory

In this paper, we study the non-commutative Chern-Simons description of the hierarchy of quantum Hall states. Our method is based on the framework suggested by Susskind in hep-th/0101029. By using the area preserving diffeomorphism gauge symmetry of quasiparticle fluid, we show that non-commutative Chern-Simons description of the hierarchy construction of quantum Hall states with generic filling fraction can be realized in Susskind's approach. The relationship between our model and the pervious work on the effective field theory of quantum Hall states is also discussed.
