Where are the logs?

The commonly quoted error rates for QMC integration with an infinite low discrepancy sequence is $O(n^{-1}\log(n)^r)$ with $r=d$ for extensible sequences and $r=d-1$ otherwise. Such rates hold uniformly over all $d$ dimensional integrands of Hardy-Krause variation one when using $n$ evaluation points. Implicit in those bounds is that for any sequence of QMC points, the integrand can be chosen to depend on $n$. In this paper we show that rates with any $r<(d-1)/2$ can hold when $f$ is held fixed as $n\to\infty$. This is accomplished following a suggestion of Erich Novak to use some unpublished results of Trojan from the 1980s as given in the information based complexity monograph of Traub, Wasilkowski and Woźniakowski. The proof is made by applying a technique of Roth with the theorem of Trojan. The proof is non constructive and we do not know of any integrand of bounded variation in the sense of Hardy and Krause for which the QMC error exceeds $(\log n)^{1+ε}/n$ for infinitely many $n$ when using a digital sequence such as one of Sobol's. An empirical search when $d=2$ for integrands designed to exploit known weaknesses in certain point sets showed no evidence that $r>1$ is needed. An example with $d=3$ and $n$ up to $2^{100}$ might possibly require $r>1$.

The nonzero gain coefficients of Sobol's sequences are always powers of two

When a plain Monte Carlo estimate on $n$ samples has variance $σ^2/n$, then scrambled digital nets attain a variance that is $o(1/n)$ as $n\to\infty$. For finite $n$ and an adversarially selected integrand, the variance of a scrambled $(t,m,s)$-net can be at most $Γσ^2/n$ for a maximal gain coefficient $Γ<\infty$. The most widely used digital nets and sequences are those of Sobol'. It was previously known that $Γ\leqslant 2^t3^s$ for Sobol' points as well as Niederreiter-Xing points. In this paper we study nets in base $2$. We show that $Γ\leqslant2^{t+s-1}$ for nets. This bound is a simple, but apparently unnoticed, consequence of a microstructure analysis in Niederreiter and Pirsic (2001). We obtain a sharper bound that is smaller than this for some digital nets. We also show that all nonzero gain coefficients must be powers of two. A consequence of this latter fact is a simplified algorithm for computing gain coefficients of nets in base $2$.

$L_p$ and almost sure convergence of estimation on heavy tail index under random censoring

In this paper, we prove $L_p,\ p\geq 2$ and almost sure convergence of tail index estimator mentioned in \cite{grama2008} under random censoring and several assumptions. $p$th moment of the error of the estimator is proved to be of order $O\left(\frac{1}{\log^{mκ/2}n}\right)$ with given assumptions. We also perform several finite sample simulations to quantify performance of this estimator. Finite sample results show that the proposed estimator is effective in finding underlying tail index even when censor rate is high.

Monotone function estimator and its application

In this paper, the model $Y_i=g(Z_i),\ i=1,2,...,n$ with $Z_i$ being random variables with known distribution and $g(x)$ being unknown strictly increasing function is proposed and almost sure convergence of estimator for $g(x)$ is proved for i.i.d and short range dependent data. Confidence intervals and bands are constructed for i.i.d data theoretically and confidence intervals are introduced for short range dependent data through resampling. Besides, a test for equivalence of $g(x)$ to the desired function is proposed. Finite sample analysis and application of this model on an urban waste water treatment plant's data is demonstrated as well.
