High-Precision Mass Measurements of Proton-Rich Rh, Pd, Cd isotopes in the vicinity of 100Sn and Impact on X-Ray Burst and Supernova Nucleosynthesis

Using the ZeroDegree multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph of the CRISMASS project at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, we performed high-precision mass measurements of proton-rich nuclei near the doubly magic nucleus 100Sn, achieving uncertainties on the order of 10 keV. The masses of 91Rh, 92Pd, and 96Cd were determined for the first time with high precision, and the accuracy of several additional masses was substantially improved. Incorporating the new data into X-ray burst simulations significantly reduces the abundance uncertainties in the $A$ = 90-100 region, shifting the reaction flow toward $A$ = 90 production and suppressing the synthesis of heavier nuclei. Further investigation of the $\nu p$-process indicates that 99Rh plays a significant role in the reaction flow within the mass region studied. These high-precision mass measurements refine the mass surface near 100Sn and provide critical constraints on models of proton-rich nucleosynthesis.

Magnon interactions in a moderately correlated Mott insulator

Quantum fluctuations in low-dimensional systems and near quantum phase transitions have significant influences on material properties. Yet, it is difficult to experimentally gauge the strength and importance of quantum fluctuations. Here we provide a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of magnon excitations in Mott insulating cuprates. From the thin film of SrCuO$_2$, single- and bi-magnon dispersions are derived. Using an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian generated from the Hubbard model, we show that the single-magnon dispersion is only described satisfactorily when including significant quantum corrections stemming from magnon-magnon interactions. Comparative results on La$_2$CuO$_4$ indicate that quantum fluctuations are much stronger in SrCuO$_2$ suggesting closer proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point. Monte Carlo calculations reveal that other magnetic orders may compete with the antiferromagnetic N\'eel order as the ground state. Our results indicate that SrCuO$_2$ - due to strong quantum fluctuations - is a unique starting point for the exploration of novel magnetic ground states.

Multiple superconducting phases driven by pressure in the topological insulator GeSb4Te7

Tuning superconductivity in topological materials by means of chemical substitution, electrostatic gating, or pressure is thought to be an effective route towards realizing topological superconductivity with their inherent Majorana fermions, the manipulation of which may form the basis for future topological quantum computing. It has recently been established that the pseudo-binary chalcogenides (ACh)m(Pn2Ch3)n (A = Ge, Mn, Pb, etc.; Pn = Sb or Bi; Ch = Te, Se) may host novel topological quantum states such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and topological axion states. Here we map out the phase diagram of one member in this series, the topological insulator candidate GeSb4Te7 up to pressures of ~35 GPa, through a combination of electrical resistance measurements, Raman spectroscopy, as well as first-principles calculations. Three distinct superconducting phases emerge under the pressure above ~11, ~17, and ~31 GPa, which are accompanied by concomitant structural transitions, evidenced from the changes in the Raman modes. The first-principles calculations validate the existence of a topological insulating state at ambient pressure and predict two possible structural transitions at 10 and 17 GPa, in agreement with the experimental observations. Overall, our results establish the GeSb4Te7 family of materials as a fertile arena for further exploring various topological phenomena, including topological phase transitions and putative topological superconductivity.

CMOS compatible high-performance nanolasing based on perovskite-SiN hybrid integration

Coherent light sources in silicon photonics are the long-sought holy grail because silicon-based materials have indirect bandgap. Traditional strategies for realizing such sources, e.g., heterogeneous photonic integration, strain engineering and nonlinear process, are technologically demanding. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid lasing device composing of perovskite nanocrystals and silicon nitride nanobeam cavity. We fabricate SiN photonic crystal naonobeam cavities on a solid substrate with significantly improved thermal and mechanical stabilities compared to conventional suspended ones. In addition, adding a PMMA-encapsulation layer on top of the SiN can significantly boost the Q-factor of the cavity mode. By dispersing perovskite nanocrystals as emitters in the PMMA layer, we obtained high-performance coherent emissions in terms of lasing threshold, linewidth and mode volumes. Our work offers a compelling way of creating solution-processed active integrated photonic devices based on the mature platform of silicon photonics for applications in optical information science and photonic quantum technology.

Inhomogeneous spin excitations in weakly coupled spin-1/2 chains

We present a systematic inelastic neutron scattering and neutron diffraction study of the magnetic structure of the quasi-1D spin-1/2 magnet SrCo2V2O8, where the interchain coupling in the Neel-type antiferromagnetic ground state breaks the static spin lattice into two independent domains. At zero magnetic field, we observe two new spin excitations with small spectral weights inside the gapped region defined by the spinon bound states. In an external magnetic field along the chain axis, the Neel order is partially destabilized above 2 T and completely suppressed at 3.9 T, above which a quantum disordered Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) prevails. We propose that the two new modes at zero field are spinon excitations inside the domain walls. Since they have a smaller gap than those excited in the Neel domains, the underlying spin chains enter the TLL state via a local quantum phase transition at 2 T, making a stable Neel / TLL coexistence until the excitation gap closes in the Neel state at 3.9 T.

Magnetic phase diagram of the quantum spin chain compound SrCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$: a single-crystal neutron diffraction study in magnetic field

We explore the spin states in the quantum spin chain compound SrCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ up to 14.9 T and down to 50 mK, using single-crystal neutron diffraction. Upon cooling in zero-field, antiferromagnetic (AFM) order of N\'eel type develops at $T_\mathrm{{N}}$ $\simeq$ 5.0 K. Applying an external magnetic field ($H$ $\parallel$ $c$-axis) destabilizes the N\'eel order, leading to an order-disorder transition when applying a field between $T_\mathrm{{N}}$ and $\sim$ 1.5 K. Below 1.5 K, we observe a N\'eel to longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW) order transition at 3.9 T, and a LSDW to emergent AFM order transition at 7.0 T. Our results also reveal several unique signatures for the states of the spins that are not present in the isostructural counterpart BaCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$.

Unconventional magnetic phase separation in $\gamma$-CoV$_2$O$_6$

We have explored the magnetism in the non-geometrically frustrated spin-chain system $\gamma$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ which possesses a complex magnetic exchange network. Our neutron diffraction patterns at low temperatures ($T$ $\leqslant$ $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ = 6.6 K) are best described by a model in which two magnetic phases coexist in a volume ratio 65(1) : 35(1), with each phase consisting of a single spin modulation. This model fits previous studies and our observations better than the model proposed by Lenertz $et$ $al$ in J. Phys. Chem. C 118, 13981 (2014), which consisted of one phase with two spin modulations. By decreasing the temperature from $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, the minority phase of our model undergoes an incommensurate-commensurate lock-in transition at $T^{*}$ = 5.6 K. Based on these results, we propose that phase separation is an alternative approach for degeneracy-lifting in frustrated magnets.

The Fast Linear Accelerator Modeling Engine for FRIB Online Model Service

Commissioning of a large accelerator facility like FRIB needs support from an online beam dynamics model. Considering the new physics challenges of FRIB such as modeling of non-axisymmetric superconducting RF cavities and multi-charge state acceleration, there is no readily available online beam tuning code. The design code of FRIB super-conducting linac, IMPACT-Z, is not suitable for online tuning because of its code design and running speed. Therefore, the Fast Linear Accelerator Modeling Engine (FLAME), specifically designed to fulfill FRIB's online modeling challenges, is proposed. The physics model of FLAME, especially its novel way of modeling non-axisymmetric superconducting RF cavities using a multipole expansion based thin-lens kick model, is discussed in detail, and the benchmark results against FRIB design code is presented, after which the software design strategy of FLAME and its execution speed is presented.

Spectroscopic evidence for giant orbital moment and magnetic anisotropy induced by local distortions in alpha-CoV2O6

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the local magnetism of the Co ions in the spin-chain compound CoV2O6, which crystallizes in two different allotropic phases, alpha- and gamma-CoV2O6. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we have found a very large and a moderate orbital contribution to the magnetism in alpha- and gamma-CoV2O6, respectively. Full-multiplet calculations indicate that the differences in the magnetic behavior of alpha- and gamma-CoV2O6 phases originate from different local distortions of the CoO6 octahedra. In particular, the strong compression of the CoO6 octahedra in alpha-CoV2O6 lead to a strong mixture of t2g and eg orbitals which, via the local atomic Coulomb and exchange interactions, results in an exceptionally large orbital moment.

Longitudinal SDW order in a quasi-1D Ising-like quantum antiferromagnet

From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co$^{\rm 2+}$ spin compound BaCo$_{\rm 2}$V$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N{\' e}el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering.

Novel ordering of an S = 1/2 quasi one-dimensional Ising-like anitiferromagnet in magnetic field

High-field specific heat measurements on BaCo2V2O8, which is a good realization of an S = 1/2 quasi one-dimensional Ising-like antifferomagnet, have been performed in magnetic fields up to 12 T along the chain and at temperature down to 200 mK. We have found a new magnetic ordered state in the field-induced phase above Hc ~ 3.9 T. We suggest that a novel type of the incommensurate order, which has no correspondence to the classical spin system, is realized in the field-induced phase.
