PathwayBench: Assessing Routability of Pedestrian Pathway Networks Inferred from Multi-City Imagery

Applications to support pedestrian mobility in urban areas require a complete, and routable graph representation of the built environment. Globally available information, including aerial imagery provides a scalable source for constructing these path networks, but the associated learning problem is challenging: Relative to road network pathways, pedestrian network pathways are narrower, more frequently disconnected, often visually and materially variable in smaller areas, and their boundaries are broken up by driveway incursions, alleyways, marked or unmarked crossings through roadways. Existing algorithms to extract pedestrian pathway network graphs are inconsistently evaluated and tend to ignore routability, making it difficult to assess utility for mobility applications: Even if all path segments are available, discontinuities could dramatically and arbitrarily shift the overall path taken by a pedestrian. In this paper, we describe a first standard benchmark for the pedestrian pathway graph extraction problem, comprising the largest available dataset equipped with manually vetted ground truth annotations (covering $3,000 km^2$ land area in regions from 8 cities), and a family of evaluation metrics centering routability and downstream utility. By partitioning the data into polygons at the scale of individual intersections, we compute local routability as an efficient proxy for global routability. We consider multiple measures of polygon-level routability and compare predicted measures with ground truth to construct evaluation metrics. Using these metrics, we show that this benchmark can surface strengths and weaknesses of existing methods that are hidden by simple edge-counting metrics over single-region datasets used in prior work, representing a challenging, high-impact problem in computer vision and machine learning.

MAP-Neo: Highly Capable and Transparent Bilingual Large Language Model Series

Large Language Models (LLMs) have made great strides in recent years to achieve unprecedented performance across different tasks. However, due to commercial interest, the most competitive models like GPT, Gemini, and Claude have been gated behind proprietary interfaces without disclosing the training details. Recently, many institutions have open-sourced several strong LLMs like LLaMA-3, comparable to existing closed-source LLMs. However, only the model's weights are provided with most details (e.g., intermediate checkpoints, pre-training corpus, and training code, etc.) being undisclosed. To improve the transparency of LLMs, the research community has formed to open-source truly open LLMs (e.g., Pythia, Amber, OLMo), where more details (e.g., pre-training corpus and training code) are being provided. These models have greatly advanced the scientific study of these large models including their strengths, weaknesses, biases and risks. However, we observe that the existing truly open LLMs on reasoning, knowledge, and coding tasks are still inferior to existing state-of-the-art LLMs with similar model sizes. To this end, we open-source MAP-Neo, a highly capable and transparent bilingual language model with 7B parameters trained from scratch on 4.5T high-quality tokens. Our MAP-Neo is the first fully open-sourced bilingual LLM with comparable performance compared to existing state-of-the-art LLMs. Moreover, we open-source all details to reproduce our MAP-Neo, where the cleaned pre-training corpus, data cleaning pipeline, checkpoints, and well-optimized training/evaluation framework are provided. Finally, we hope our MAP-Neo will enhance and strengthen the open research community and inspire more innovations and creativities to facilitate the further improvements of LLMs.

HoLLMwood: Unleashing the Creativity of Large Language Models in Screenwriting via Role Playing

Generative AI has demonstrated unprecedented creativity in the field of computer vision, yet such phenomena have not been observed in natural language processing. In particular, large language models (LLMs) can hardly produce written works at the level of human experts due to the extremely high complexity of literature writing. In this paper, we present HoLLMwood, an automated framework for unleashing the creativity of LLMs and exploring their potential in screenwriting, which is a highly demanding task. Mimicking the human creative process, we assign LLMs to different roles involved in the real-world scenario. In addition to the common practice of treating LLMs as ${Writer}$, we also apply LLMs as ${Editor}$, who is responsible for providing feedback and revision advice to ${Writer}$. Besides, to enrich the characters and deepen the plots, we introduce a role-playing mechanism and adopt LLMs as ${Actors}$ that can communicate and interact with each other. Evaluations on automatically generated screenplays show that HoLLMwood substantially outperforms strong baselines in terms of coherence, relevance, interestingness and overall quality.

Recent advancements have seen Large Language Models (LLMs) and Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) surpassing general human capabilities in various tasks, approaching the proficiency level of human experts across multiple domains. With traditional benchmarks becoming less challenging for these models, new rigorous challenges are essential to gauge their advanced abilities. In this work, we present OlympiadBench, an Olympiad-level bilingual multimodal scientific benchmark, featuring 8,476 problems from Olympiad-level mathematics and physics competitions, including the Chinese college entrance exam. Each problem is detailed with expert-level annotations for step-by-step reasoning. Evaluating top-tier models on OlympiadBench, we implement a comprehensive assessment methodology to accurately evaluate model responses. Notably, the best-performing model, GPT-4V, attains an average score of 17.97% on OlympiadBench, with a mere 10.74% in physics, highlighting the benchmark rigor and the intricacy of physical reasoning. Our analysis orienting GPT-4V points out prevalent issues with hallucinations, knowledge omissions, and logical fallacies. We hope that our challenging benchmark can serve as a valuable resource for helping future AGI research endeavors. HHMR: Holistic Hand Mesh Recovery by Enhancing the Multimodal Controllability of Graph Diffusion Models

Recent years have witnessed a trend of the deep integration of the generation and reconstruction paradigms. In this paper, we extend the ability of controllable generative models for a more comprehensive hand mesh recovery task: direct hand mesh generation, inpainting, reconstruction, and fitting in a single framework, which we name as Holistic Hand Mesh Recovery (HHMR). Our key observation is that different kinds of hand mesh recovery tasks can be achieved by a single generative model with strong multimodal controllability, and in such a framework, realizing different tasks only requires giving different signals as conditions. To achieve this goal, we propose an all-in-one diffusion framework based on graph convolution and attention mechanisms for holistic hand mesh recovery. In order to achieve strong control generation capability while ensuring the decoupling of multimodal control signals, we map different modalities to a shared feature space and apply cross-scale random masking in both modality and feature levels. In this way, the correlation between different modalities can be fully exploited during the learning of hand priors. Furthermore, we propose Condition-aligned Gradient Guidance to enhance the alignment of the generated model with the control signals, which significantly improves the accuracy of the hand mesh reconstruction and fitting. Experiments show that our novel framework can realize multiple hand mesh recovery tasks simultaneously and outperform the existing methods in different tasks, which provides more possibilities for subsequent downstream applications including gesture recognition, pose generation, mesh editing, and so on.

Electromagnetic Wave Property Inspired Radio Environment Knowledge Construction and AI-based Verification for 6G Digital Twin Channel

As the underlying foundation of a digital twin network (DTN), a digital twin channel (DTC) can accurately depict the process of radio propagation in the air interface to support the DTN-based 6G wireless network. Since radio propagation is affected by the environment, constructing the relationship between the environment and radio wave propagation is the key to improving the accuracy of DTC, and the construction method based on artificial intelligence (AI) is the most concentrated. However, in the existing methods, the environment information input into the neural network (NN) has many dimensions, and the correlation between the environment and the channel relationship is unclear, resulting in a highly complex relationship construction process. To solve this issue, in this paper, we propose a construction method of radio environment knowledge (REK) inspired by the electromagnetic wave property to quantify the contribution of radio propagation. Specifically, a range selection scheme for effective environment information based on random geometry is proposed to reduce the redundancy of environment information. We quantify the contribution of radio propagation reflection, diffraction and scatterer blockage using environment information and propose a flow chart of REK construction to replace the feature extraction process partially based on NN. To validate REK's effectiveness, we conduct a path loss prediction task based on a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) employing a simple two-layer convolutional structure. The results show that the accuracy of the range selection method reaches 90\%; the constructed REK maintains the prediction error of 0.3 and only needs 0.04 seconds of testing time, effectively reducing the network complexity.

Disttack: Graph Adversarial Attacks Toward Distributed GNN Training

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have emerged as potent models for graph learning. Distributing the training process across multiple computing nodes is the most promising solution to address the challenges of ever-growing real-world graphs. However, current adversarial attack methods on GNNs neglect the characteristics and applications of the distributed scenario, leading to suboptimal performance and inefficiency in attacking distributed GNN training. In this study, we introduce Disttack, the first framework of adversarial attacks for distributed GNN training that leverages the characteristics of frequent gradient updates in a distributed system. Specifically, Disttack corrupts distributed GNN training by injecting adversarial attacks into one single computing node. The attacked subgraphs are precisely perturbed to induce an abnormal gradient ascent in backpropagation, disrupting gradient synchronization between computing nodes and thus leading to a significant performance decline of the trained GNN. We evaluate Disttack on four large real-world graphs by attacking five widely adopted GNNs. Compared with the state-of-the-art attack method, experimental results demonstrate that Disttack amplifies the model accuracy degradation by 2.75$\times$ and achieves speedup by 17.33$\times$ on average while maintaining unnoticeability.

An Enhanced Dynamic Ray Tracing Architecture for Channel Prediction Based on Multipath Bidirectional Geometry and Field Extrapolation

With the development of sixth generation (6G) networks toward digitalization and intelligentization of communications, rapid and precise channel prediction is crucial for the network potential release. Interestingly, a dynamic ray tracing (DRT) approach for channel prediction has recently been proposed, which utilizes the results of traditional RT to extrapolate the multipath geometry evolution. However, both the priori environmental data and the regularity in multipath evolution can be further utilized. In this work, an enhanced-dynamic ray tracing (E-DRT) algorithm architecture based on multipath bidirectional extrapolation has been proposed. In terms of accuracy, all available environment information is utilized to predict the birth and death processes of multipath components (MPCs) through bidirectional geometry extrapolation. In terms of efficiency, bidirectional electric field extrapolation is employed based on the evolution regularity of the MPCs' electric field. The results in a Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) scenario show that E-DRT improves the accuracy of the channel prediction from 68.3% to 94.8% while reducing the runtime by 7.2% compared to DRT.

TeleChat Technical Report

In this technical report, we present TeleChat, a collection of large language models (LLMs) with parameters of 3 billion, 7 billion and 12 billion. It includes pretrained language models as well as fine-tuned chat models that is aligned with human preferences. TeleChat is initially pretrained on an extensive corpus containing a diverse collection of texts from both English and Chinese languages, including trillions of tokens. Subsequently, the model undergoes fine-tuning to align with human preferences, following a detailed methodology that we describe. We evaluate the performance of TeleChat on various tasks, including language understanding, mathematics, reasoning, code generation, and knowledge-based question answering. Our findings indicate that TeleChat achieves comparable performance to other open-source models of similar size across a wide range of public benchmarks. To support future research and applications utilizing LLMs, we release the fine-tuned model checkpoints of TeleChat's 7B and 12B variant, along with code and a portion of our pretraining data, to the public community.

GaussianAvatar: Towards Realistic Human Avatar Modeling from a Single Video via Animatable 3D Gaussians

We present GaussianAvatar, an efficient approach to creating realistic human avatars with dynamic 3D appearances from a single video. We start by introducing animatable 3D Gaussians to explicitly represent humans in various poses and clothing styles. Such an explicit and animatable representation can fuse 3D appearances more efficiently and consistently from 2D observations. Our representation is further augmented with dynamic properties to support pose-dependent appearance modeling, where a dynamic appearance network along with an optimizable feature tensor is designed to learn the motion-to-appearance mapping. Moreover, by leveraging the differentiable motion condition, our method enables a joint optimization of motions and appearances during avatar modeling, which helps to tackle the long-standing issue of inaccurate motion estimation in monocular settings. The efficacy of GaussianAvatar is validated on both the public dataset and our collected dataset, demonstrating its superior performances in terms of appearance quality and rendering efficiency.

Towards 6G Digital Twin Channel Using Radio Environment Knowledge Pool

The digital twin channel (DTC) is crucial for 6G wireless autonomous networks as it replicates the wireless channel fading states in 6G air interface transmissions. It is well known that the physical environment influences channels. A key task for accurately twinning channels in complex 6G scenarios is establishing precise relationships between the environment and the channels. In this article, the radio environment knowledge pool (REKP) is proposed, with its core function being to construct and store as much knowledge between the environment and channels as possible. Firstly, the research progress related to DTC is summarized, and a comparative analysis of these achievements on key indicators in digital twin is conducted, proposing the challenges faced in knowledge construction. Secondly, instructions on how to construct and update REKP are given. Then, a typical case is presented to demonstrate the great potential of REKP in enabling DTC. Finally, how to utilize REKP to address open issues in the 6G wireless communication system is discussed, including enhancing performance, reducing costs, and keeping a trustworthy DTC.

TACO: Benchmarking Generalizable Bimanual Tool-ACtion-Object Understanding

Humans commonly work with multiple objects in daily life and can intuitively transfer manipulation skills to novel objects by understanding object functional regularities. However, existing technical approaches for analyzing and synthesizing hand-object manipulation are mostly limited to handling a single hand and object due to the lack of data support. To address this, we construct TACO, an extensive bimanual hand-object-interaction dataset spanning a large variety of tool-action-object compositions for daily human activities. TACO contains 2.5K motion sequences paired with third-person and egocentric views, precise hand-object 3D meshes, and action labels. To rapidly expand the data scale, we present a fully automatic data acquisition pipeline combining multi-view sensing with an optical motion capture system. With the vast research fields provided by TACO, we benchmark three generalizable hand-object-interaction tasks: compositional action recognition, generalizable hand-object motion forecasting, and cooperative grasp synthesis. Extensive experiments reveal new insights, challenges, and opportunities for advancing the studies of generalizable hand-object motion analysis and synthesis. Ins-HOI: Instance Aware Human-Object Interactions Recovery

Accurately modeling detailed interactions between human/hand and object is an appealing yet challenging task. Current multi-view capture systems are only capable of reconstructing multiple subjects into a single, unified mesh, which fails to model the states of each instance individually during interactions. To address this, previous methods use template-based representations to track human/hand and object. However, the quality of the reconstructions is limited by the descriptive capabilities of the templates so that these methods are inherently struggle with geometry details, pressing deformations and invisible contact surfaces. In this work, we propose an end-to-end Instance-aware Human-Object Interactions recovery (Ins-HOI) framework by introducing an instance-level occupancy field representation. However, the real-captured data is presented as a holistic mesh, unable to provide instance-level supervision. To address this, we further propose a complementary training strategy that leverages synthetic data to introduce instance-level shape priors, enabling the disentanglement of occupancy fields for different instances. Specifically, synthetic data, created by randomly combining individual scans of humans/hands and objects, guides the network to learn a coarse prior of instances. Meanwhile, real-captured data helps in learning the overall geometry and restricting interpenetration in contact areas. As demonstrated in experiments, our method Ins-HOI supports instance-level reconstruction and provides reasonable and realistic invisible contact surfaces even in cases of extremely close interaction. To facilitate the research of this task, we collect a large-scale, high-fidelity 3D scan dataset, including 5.2k high-quality scans with real-world human-chair and hand-object interactions. The code and data will be public for research purposes.

Revisiting Edge Perturbation for Graph Neural Network in Graph Data Augmentation and Attack

Edge perturbation is a basic method to modify graph structures. It can be categorized into two veins based on their effects on the performance of graph neural networks (GNNs), i.e., graph data augmentation and attack. Surprisingly, both veins of edge perturbation methods employ the same operations, yet yield opposite effects on GNNs' accuracy. A distinct boundary between these methods in using edge perturbation has never been clearly defined. Consequently, inappropriate perturbations may lead to undesirable outcomes, necessitating precise adjustments to achieve desired effects. Therefore, questions of ``why edge perturbation has a two-faced effect?'' and ``what makes edge perturbation flexible and effective?'' still remain unanswered. In this paper, we will answer these questions by proposing a unified formulation and establishing a clear boundary between two categories of edge perturbation methods. Specifically, we conduct experiments to elucidate the differences and similarities between these methods and theoretically unify the workflow of these methods by casting it to one optimization problem. Then, we devise Edge Priority Detector (EPD) to generate a novel priority metric, bridging these methods up in the workflow. Experiments show that EPD can make augmentation or attack flexibly and achieve comparable or superior performance to other counterparts with less time overhead.

Navigating the Dual Facets: A Comprehensive Evaluation of Sequential Memory Editing in Large Language Models

Memory Editing (ME) has emerged as an efficient method to modify erroneous facts or inject new facts into Large Language Models (LLMs). Two mainstream ME methods exist: parameter-modifying ME and parameter-preserving ME (integrating extra modules while preserving original parameters). Regrettably, previous studies on ME evaluation have two critical limitations: (i) evaluating LLMs with single edit only, neglecting the need for continuous editing, and (ii) evaluations focusing solely on basic factual triples, overlooking broader LLM capabilities like logical reasoning and reading understanding. This study addresses these limitations with contributions threefold: (i) We explore how ME affects a wide range of fundamental capabilities of LLMs under sequential editing. Experimental results reveal an intriguing phenomenon: Most parameter-modifying ME consistently degrade performance across all tasks after a few sequential edits. In contrast, parameter-preserving ME effectively maintains LLMs' fundamental capabilities but struggles to accurately recall edited knowledge presented in a different format. (ii) We extend our evaluation to different editing settings, such as layers to edit, model size, instruction tuning, etc. Experimental findings indicate several strategies that can potentially mitigate the adverse effects of ME. (iii) We further explain why parameter-modifying ME damages LLMs from three dimensions: parameter changes after editing, language modeling capability, and the in-context learning capability. Our in-depth study advocates more careful use of ME in real-world scenarios.

A Saliency Enhanced Feature Fusion based multiscale RGB-D Salient Object Detection Network

Multiscale convolutional neural network (CNN) has demonstrated remarkable capabilities in solving various vision problems. However, fusing features of different scales alwaysresults in large model sizes, impeding the application of multiscale CNNs in RGB-D saliency detection. In this paper, we propose a customized feature fusion module, called Saliency Enhanced Feature Fusion (SEFF), for RGB-D saliency detection. SEFF utilizes saliency maps of the neighboring scales to enhance the necessary features for fusing, resulting in more representative fused features. Our multiscale RGB-D saliency detector uses SEFF and processes images with three different scales. SEFF is used to fuse the features of RGB and depth images, as well as the features of decoders at different scales. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets have demonstrated the superiority of our method over ten SOTA saliency detectors.

Improving Short Utterance Anti-Spoofing with AASIST2

The wav2vec 2.0 and integrated spectro-temporal graph attention network (AASIST) based countermeasure achieves great performance in speech anti-spoofing. However, current spoof speech detection systems have fixed training and evaluation durations, while the performance degrades significantly during short utterance evaluation. To solve this problem, AASIST can be improved to AASIST2 by modifying the residual blocks to Res2Net blocks. The modified Res2Net blocks can extract multi-scale features and improve the detection performance for speech of different durations, thus improving the short utterance evaluation performance. On the other hand, adaptive large margin fine-tuning (ALMFT) has achieved performance improvement in short utterance speaker verification. Therefore, we apply Dynamic Chunk Size (DCS) and ALMFT training strategies in speech anti-spoofing to further improve the performance of short utterance evaluation. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed AASIST2 improves the performance of short utterance evaluation while maintaining the performance of regular evaluation on different datasets.

Solving Math Word Problems via Cooperative Reasoning induced Language Models

Large-scale pre-trained language models (PLMs) bring new opportunities to challenging problems, especially those that need high-level intelligence, such as the math word problem (MWPs). However, directly applying existing PLMs to MWPs can fail as the generation process lacks sufficient supervision and thus lacks fast adaptivity as humans. We notice that human reasoning has a dual reasoning framework that consists of an immediate reaction system (system 1) and a delicate reasoning system (system 2), where the entire reasoning is determined by their interaction. This inspires us to develop a cooperative reasoning-induced PLM for solving MWPs, called Cooperative Reasoning (CoRe), resulting in a human-like reasoning architecture with system 1 as the generator and system 2 as the verifier. In our approach, the generator is responsible for generating reasoning paths, and the verifiers are used to supervise the evaluation in order to obtain reliable feedback for the generator. We evaluate our CoRe framework on several mathematical reasoning datasets and achieve decent improvement over state-of-the-art methods, up to 9.6% increase over best baselines. Our codes are available at https://github.com/TianHongZXY/CoRe
