Nodal auxiliary space preconditioning for the surface de Rham complex

This work develops optimal preconditioners for the discrete H(curl) and H(div) problems on two-dimensional surfaces by nodal auxiliary space preconditioning [R. Hiptmair, J. Xu: SIAM J. Numer. Anal. \textbf{45}, 2483-2509 (2007)]. In particular, on unstructured triangulated surfaces, we develop fast and user-friendly preconditioners for the edge and face element discretizations of curl-curl and grad-div problems based on inverting several discrete surface Laplacians. The proposed preconditioners lead to efficient iterative methods for computing harmonic tangential vector fields on discrete surfaces. Numerical experiments on two- and three-dimensional hypersurfaces are presented to test the performance of those surface preconditioners.

Single Image Deraining via Rain-Steaks Aware Deep Convolutional Neural Network

It is challenging to remove rain-steaks from a single rainy image because the rain steaks are spatially varying in the rainy image. This problem is studied in this paper by combining conventional image processing techniques and deep learning based techniques. An improved weighted guided image filter (iWGIF) is proposed to extract high frequency information from a rainy image. The high frequency information mainly includes rain steaks and noise, and it can guide the rain steaks aware deep convolutional neural network (RSADCNN) to pay more attention to rain steaks. The efficiency and explain-ability of RSADNN are improved. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods on both synthetic and real-world images in terms of both qualitative and quantitative measures. It is useful for autonomous navigation in raining conditions.

A Causal Intervention Scheme for Semantic Segmentation of Quasi-periodic Cardiovascular Signals

Precise segmentation is a vital first step to analyze semantic information of cardiac cycle and capture anomaly with cardiovascular signals. However, in the field of deep semantic segmentation, inference is often unilaterally confounded by the individual attribute of data. Towards cardiovascular signals, quasi-periodicity is the essential characteristic to be learned, regarded as the synthesize of the attributes of morphology (Am) and rhythm (Ar). Our key insight is to suppress the over-dependence on Am or Ar while the generation process of deep representations. To address this issue, we establish a structural causal model as the foundation to customize the intervention approaches on Am and Ar, respectively. In this paper, we propose contrastive causal intervention (CCI) to form a novel training paradigm under a frame-level contrastive framework. The intervention can eliminate the implicit statistical bias brought by the single attribute and lead to more objective representations. We conduct comprehensive experiments with the controlled condition for QRS location and heart sound segmentation. The final results indicate that our approach can evidently improve the performance by up to 0.41% for QRS location and 2.73% for heart sound segmentation. The efficiency of the proposed method is generalized to multiple databases and noisy signals.

Adaptive Weighted Guided Image Filtering for Depth Enhancement in Shape-From-Focus

Existing shape from focus (SFF) techniques cannot preserve depth edges and fine structural details from a sequence of multi-focus images. Moreover, noise in the sequence of multi-focus images affects the accuracy of the depth map. In this paper, a novel depth enhancement algorithm for the SFF based on an adaptive weighted guided image filtering (AWGIF) is proposed to address the above issues. The AWGIF is applied to decompose an initial depth map which is estimated by the traditional SFF into a base layer and a detail layer. In order to preserve the edges accurately in the refined depth map, the guidance image is constructed from the multi-focus image sequence, and the coefficient of the AWGIF is utilized to suppress the noise while enhancing the fine depth details. Experiments on real and synthetic objects demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of anti-noise, and the ability to preserve depth edges and fine structural details compared to existing methods.

Single image dehazing via combining the prior knowledge and CNNs

Aiming at the existing single image haze removal algorithms, which are based on prior knowledge and assumptions, subject to many limitations in practical applications, and could suffer from noise and halo amplification. An end-to-end system is proposed in this paper to reduce defects by combining the prior knowledge and deep learning method. The haze image is decomposed into the base layer and detail layers through a weighted guided image filter (WGIF) firstly, and the airlight is estimated from the base layer. Then, the base layer image is passed to the efficient deep convolutional network for estimating the transmission map. To restore object close to the camera completely without amplifying noise in sky or heavily hazy scene, an adaptive strategy is proposed based on the value of the transmission map. If the transmission map of a pixel is small, the base layer of the haze image is used to recover a haze-free image via atmospheric scattering model, finally. Otherwise, the haze image is used. Experiments show that the proposed method achieves superior performance over existing methods.

New stabilized $P_1\times P_0$ finite element methods for nearly inviscid and incompressible flows

This work proposes a new stabilized $P_1\times P_0$ finite element method for solving the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. The numerical scheme is based on a reduced Bernardi--Raugel element with statically condensed face bubbles and is pressure-robust in the small viscosity regime. For the Stokes problem, an error estimate uniform with respect to the kinematic viscosity is shown. For the Navier--Stokes equation, the nonlinear convection term is discretized using an edge-averaged finite element method. In comparison with classical schemes, the proposed method does not require tuning of parameters and is validated for competitiveness on several benchmark problems in 2 and 3 dimensional space.

Superconvergent pseudostress-velocity finite element methods for the Oseen and Navier-Stokes equations

We present a priori and superconvergence error estimates of mixed finite element methods for the pseudostress-velocity formulation of the Oseen equation. In particular, we derive superconvergence estimates for the velocity and a priori error estimates under unstructured grids, and obtain superconvergence results for the pseudostress under certain structured grids. A variety of numerical experiments validate the theoretical results and illustrate the effectiveness of the superconvergent recovery-based adaptive mesh refinement. It is also numerically shown that the proposed postprocessing yields apparent superconvergence in a benchmark problem for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equation.

Recovery-based a posteriori error analysis for plate bending problems

We present two new recovery-based a posteriori error estimates for the Hellan--Herrmann--Johnson method in Kirchhoff--Love plate theory. The first error estimator uses a postprocessed deflection and controls the $L^2$ moment error and the discrete $H^2$ deflection error. The second one controls the $L^2\times H^1$ total error and utilizes superconvergent postprocessed moment field and deflection. The effectiveness of the theoretical results is numerically validated in several experiments.

Coefficient-Robust A Posteriori Error Estimation for H(curl)-elliptic Problems

We extend the framework of a posteriori error estimation by preconditioning in [Li, Y., Zikatanov, L.: Computers \& Mathematics with Applications. \textbf{91}, 192-201 (2021)] and derive new a posteriori error estimates for H(curl)-elliptic two-phase interface problems. The proposed error estimator provides two-sided bounds for the discretization error and is robust with respect to coefficient variation under mild assumptions. For H(curl) problems with constant coefficients, the performance of this estimator is numerically compared with the one analyzed in [Schöberl, J.: Math.~Comp. \textbf{77}(262), 633-649 (2008)].

Fast auxiliary space preconditioners on surfaces

This work presents uniform preconditioners for the discrete Laplace--Beltrami operator on hypersurfaces. In particular, within the framework of fast auxiliary space preconditioning (FASP), we develop efficient and user-friendly multilevel preconditioners for the Laplace--Beltrami type equation discretized by Lagrange, nonconforming linear, and discontinuous Galerkin elements. The analysis applies to semi-definite problems on a closed surface. Numerical experiments on 2d surfaces and 3d hypersurfaces are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed preconditioners.

General local energy-preserving integrators for solving multi-symplectic Hamiltonian PDEs

In this paper we propose and investigate a general approach to constructing local energy-preserving algorithms which can be of arbitrarily high order in time for solving Hamiltonian PDEs. This approach is based on the temporal discretization using continuous Runge-Kutta-type methods, and the spatial discretization using pseudospectral methods or Gauss--Legendre collocation methods. The local energy conservation law of our new schemes is analyzed in detail. The effectiveness of the novel local energy-preserving integrators is demonstrated by coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations and 2D nonlinear Schrödinger equations with external fields. Our new schemes are compared with some classical multi-symplectic and symplectic schemes in numerical experiments. The numerical results show the remarkable \emph{long-term} behaviour of our new schemes.

Quasi-optimal adaptive hybridized mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity

For the planar Navier--Lamé equation in mixed form with symmetric stress tensors, we prove the uniform quasi-optimal convergence of an adaptive method based on the hybridized mixed finite element proposed in [Gong, Wu, and Xu: Numer.~Math., 141 (2019), pp.~569--604]. The main ingredients in the analysis consist of a discrete a posteriori upper bound and a quasi-orthogonality result for the stress field under the mixed boundary condition. Compared with existing adaptive methods, the proposed adaptive algorithm could be directly applied to the traction boundary condition and be easily implemented.

Superconvergent flux recovery of the Rannacher-Turek nonconforming element

This work presents superconvergence estimates of the nonconforming Rannacher--Turek element for second order elliptic equations on any cubical meshes in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ and $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. In particular, a corrected numerical flux is shown to be superclose to the Raviart--Thomas interpolant of the exact flux. We then design a superconvergent recovery operator based on local weighted averaging. Combining the supercloseness and the recovery operator, we prove that the recovered flux superconverges to the exact flux. As a by-product, we obtain a superconvergent recovery estimate of the Crouzeix--Raviart element method for general elliptic equations.

Some continuous and discontinuous Galerkin methods and structure preservation for incompressible flows

In this paper, we present consistent and inconsistent discontinuous Galerkin methods for incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations with the kinematic pressure, Bernoulli function and EMAC function. Semi- and fully discrete energy stability of the proposed dG methods are proved in a unified fashion. Conservation of total energy, linear and angular momentum is discussed with both central and upwind fluxes. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate our findings and compare our schemes with conventional schemes in the literature in both unsteady and steady problems. Numerical results show that global conservation of the physical quantities may not be enough to demonstrate the performance of the schemes, and our schemes are competitive and able to capture essential physical features in several benchmark problems.

An Extended Galerkin analysis in finite element exterior calculus

For the Hodge--Laplace equation in finite element exterior calculus, we introduce several families of discontinuous Galerkin methods in the extended Galerkin framework. For contractible domains, this framework utilizes seven fields and provides a unifying inf-sup analysis with respect to all discretization and penalty parameters. It is shown that the proposed methods can be hybridized as a reduced two-field formulation.

The Challenges of Crowd Workers in Rural and Urban America

Crowd work has the potential of helping the financial recovery of regions traditionally plagued by a lack of economic opportunities, e.g., rural areas. However, we currently have limited information about the challenges facing crowd work-ers from rural and super rural areas as they struggle to make a living through crowd work sites. This paper examines the challenges and advantages of rural and super rural AmazonMechanical Turk (MTurk) crowd workers and contrasts them with those of workers from urban areas. Based on a survey of421 crowd workers from differing geographic regions in theU.S., we identified how across regions, people struggled with being onboarded into crowd work. We uncovered that despite the inequalities and barriers, rural workers tended to be striving more in micro-tasking than their urban counterparts. We also identified cultural traits, relating to time dimension and individualism, that offer us an insight into crowd workers and the necessary qualities for them to succeed on gig platforms. We finish by providing design implications based on our findings to create more inclusive crowd work platforms and tools

A unified framework of continuous and discontinuous Galerkin methods for solving the incompressible Navier--Stokes equation

In this paper, we propose a unified numerical framework for the time-dependent incompressible Navier--Stokes equation which yields the $H^1$-, $H(\text{div})$-conforming, and discontinuous Galerkin methods with the use of different viscous stress tensors and penalty terms for pressure robustness. Under minimum assumption on Galerkin spaces, the semi- and fully-discrete stability is proved when a family of implicit Runge--Kutta methods are used for time discretization. Furthermore, we present a unified discussion on the penalty term. Numerical experiments are presented to compare our schemes with classical schemes in the literature in both unsteady and steady situations. It turns out that our scheme is competitive when applied to well-known benchmark problems such as Taylor--Green vortex, Kovasznay flow, potential flow, lid driven cavity flow, and the flow around a cylinder.

The error estimator is an upper and lower bound of the space time discretization error up to data oscillation. As a by-product, we also obtain new a posteriori error estimate of mixed finite element methods for the heat equation.
