Are Top School Students More Critical of Their Professors? Mining Comments on RateMyProfessor.com

Student reviews and comments on RateMyProfessor.com reflect realistic learning experiences of students. Such information provides a large-scale data source to examine the teaching quality of the lecturers. In this paper, we propose an in-depth analysis of these comments. First, we partition our data into different comparison groups. Next, we perform exploratory data analysis to delve into the data. Furthermore, we employ Latent Dirichlet Allocation and sentiment analysis to extract topics and understand the sentiments associated with the comments. We uncover interesting insights about the characteristics of both college students and professors. Our study proves that student reviews and comments contain crucial information and can serve as essential references for enrollment in courses and universities.

Weston-Watkins Hinge Loss and Ordered Partitions

Multiclass extensions of the support vector machine (SVM) have been formulated in a variety of ways. A recent empirical comparison of nine such formulations [Doǧan et al. 2016] recommends the variant proposed by Weston and Watkins (WW), despite the fact that the WW-hinge loss is not calibrated with respect to the 0-1 loss. In this work we introduce a novel discrete loss function for multiclass classification, the ordered partition loss, and prove that the WW-hinge loss is calibrated with respect to this loss. We also argue that the ordered partition loss is maximally informative among discrete losses satisfying this property. Finally, we apply our theory to justify the empirical observation made by Doǧan et al. that the WW-SVM can work well even under massive label noise, a challenging setting for multiclass SVMs.

Weak Supervision Enhanced Generative Network for Question Generation

Automatic question generation according to an answer within the given passage is useful for many applications, such as question answering system, dialogue system, etc. Current neural-based methods mostly take two steps which extract several important sentences based on the candidate answer through manual rules or supervised neural networks and then use an encoder-decoder framework to generate questions about these sentences. These approaches neglect the semantic relations between the answer and the context of the whole passage which is sometimes necessary for answering the question. To address this problem, we propose the Weak Supervision Enhanced Generative Network (WeGen) which automatically discovers relevant features of the passage given the answer span in a weakly supervised manner to improve the quality of generated questions. More specifically, we devise a discriminator, Relation Guider, to capture the relations between the whole passage and the associated answer and then the Multi-Interaction mechanism is deployed to transfer the knowledge dynamically for our question generation system. Experiments show the effectiveness of our method in both automatic evaluations and human evaluations.

Correct Convergence of Min-Sum Loopy Belief Propagation in a Block Interpolation Problem

This work proves a new result on the correct convergence of Min-Sum Loopy Belief Propagation (LBP) in an interpolation problem on a square grid graph. The focus is on the notion of local solutions, a numerical quantity attached to each site of the graph that can be used for obtaining MAP estimates. The main result is that over an $N\times N$ grid graph with a one-run boundary configuration, the local solutions at each $i \in B$ can be calculated using Min-Sum LBP by passing difference messages in $2N$ iterations, which parallels the well-known convergence time in trees.
