Central moment inequalities using Stein's method

We derive explicit central moment inequalities for random variables that admit a Stein coupling, such as exchangeable pairs, size--bias couplings or local dependence, among others. The bounds are in terms of moments (not necessarily central) of variables in the Stein coupling, which are typically local in some sense, and therefore easier to bound. In cases where the Stein couplings have the kind of behaviour leading to good normal approximation, the central moments are closely bounded by those of a normal. We show how the bounds can be used to produce concentration inequalities, and compare them to those existing in related settings. Finally, we illustrate the power of the theory by bounding the central moments of sums of neighbourhood statistics in sparse Erdős--Rényi random graphs.

The Brownian plane with minimal neck baby universe

For each $n\in\mathbb{N}$, let $\mathbf{Q}_n$ be a uniform rooted measured quadrangulation of size $n$ conditioned to have $r(n)$ vertices in its root block. We prove that for a suitable function $r(n)$, after rescaling graph distance by $\left(\frac{21}{40\cdot r(n)}\right)^{1/4}$, with an appropriate rescaling of measure, $\mathbf{Q}_n$ converges to a random pointed measured non-compact metric space $\boldsymbol{ \mathcal{S}}$, in the local Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov topology; the space $\boldsymbol{ \mathcal{S}}$ is built by identifying a uniform point of the Brownian map with the distinguished point of the Brownian plane. Our result relies upon both the convergence of uniform quadrangulations towards the Brownian plane by \citet{CLG}, and the convergence of uniform $2$-connected quadrangulations to the Brownian map, recently proved by \citet{ABW}. The main steps of the proof are as follows. First, we show that the sizes of submaps pendant to the root block have an asymptotically stable distribution. Second, we deduce asymptotics for occupancy in a random allocation model with a varying balls-to-boxes ratio. Third, we establish a bound for the number of pendant submaps of the root block, which allow us to apply the occupancy bounds to uniformly control the sizes of pendant submaps. This entails us to show that the pendant submaps act as uniformly asymptotically negligible "decorations" which do not affect the scaling limit.

Scaling limits for some random trees constructed inhomogeneously

We define some new sequences of recursively constructed random combinatorial trees, and show that, after properly rescaling graph distance and equipping the trees with the uniform measure on vertices, each sequence converges almost surely to a real tree in the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov sense. The limiting real trees are constructed via line-breaking the real half-line with a Poisson process having rate $(\ell+1)t^\ell dt$, for each positive integer $\ell$, and the growth of the combinatorial trees may be viewed as an inhomogeneous generalization of Rémy's algorithm.

Joint convergence of random quadrangulations and their cores

We show that a uniform quadrangulation, its largest 2-connected block, and its largest simple block jointly converge to the same Brownian map in distribution for the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov topology. We start by deriving a local limit theorem for the asymptotics of maximal block sizes, extending the result in \cite{BFSS}. The resulting diameter bounds for pendant submaps of random quadrangulations straightforwardly lead to Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. To extend the convergence to the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov topology, we show that exchangeable "uniformly asymptotically negligible" attachments of mass simply yield, in the limit, a deterministic scaling of the mass measure.
