Decoupling for AD-regular sets on the parabola

We improve the decoupling exponent for functions with spectrum inside AD-regular collections of arcs on the parabola. We achieve this by incorporating recent Szemer\'{e}di--Trotter-type estimates into the bootstrapping argument from \cite{BD}. As an application, our results complement, and in some cases improve earlier results \cite{chang2022decoupling} for arithmetic Cantor sets.

Diagnostic Text-guided Representation Learning in Hierarchical Classification for Pathological Whole Slide Image

With the development of digital imaging in medical microscopy, artificial intelligent-based analysis of pathological whole slide images (WSIs) provides a powerful tool for cancer diagnosis. Limited by the expensive cost of pixel-level annotation, current research primarily focuses on representation learning with slide-level labels, showing success in various downstream tasks. However, given the diversity of lesion types and the complex relationships between each other, these techniques still deserve further exploration in addressing advanced pathology tasks. To this end, we introduce the concept of hierarchical pathological image classification and propose a representation learning called PathTree. PathTree considers the multi-classification of diseases as a binary tree structure. Each category is represented as a professional pathological text description, which messages information with a tree-like encoder. The interactive text features are then used to guide the aggregation of hierarchical multiple representations. PathTree uses slide-text similarity to obtain probability scores and introduces two extra tree specific losses to further constrain the association between texts and slides. Through extensive experiments on three challenging hierarchical classification datasets: in-house cryosectioned lung tissue lesion identification, public prostate cancer grade assessment, and public breast cancer subtyping, our proposed PathTree is consistently competitive compared to the state-of-the-art methods and provides a new perspective on the deep learning-assisted solution for more complex WSI classification.

MergeUp-augmented Semi-Weakly Supervised Learning for WSI Classification

Recent advancements in computational pathology and artificial intelligence have significantly improved whole slide image (WSI) classification. However, the gigapixel resolution of WSIs and the scarcity of manual annotations present substantial challenges. Multiple instance learning (MIL) is a promising weakly supervised learning approach for WSI classification. Recently research revealed employing pseudo bag augmentation can encourage models to learn various data, thus bolstering models' performance. While directly inheriting the parents' labels can introduce more noise by mislabeling in training. To address this issue, we translate the WSI classification task from weakly supervised learning to semi-weakly supervised learning, termed SWS-MIL, where adaptive pseudo bag augmentation (AdaPse) is employed to assign labeled and unlabeled data based on a threshold strategy. Using the "student-teacher" pattern, we introduce a feature augmentation technique, MergeUp, which merges bags with low-priority bags to enhance inter-category information, increasing training data diversity. Experimental results on the CAMELYON-16, BRACS, and TCGA-LUNG datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method over existing state-of-the-art approaches, affirming its efficacy in WSI classification.

Radial Projections in $\mathbb{R}^n$ Revisited

We generalize the recent results on radial projections by Orponen, Shmerkin, Wang using two different methods. In particular, we show that given $X,Y\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ Borel sets and $X\neq \emptyset$. If $\dim Y \in (k,k+1]$ for some $k\in \{1,\dots, n-1\}$, then \[ \sup_{x\in X} \dim \pi_x(Y\setminus \{x\}) \geq \min \{\dim X + \dim Y - k, k\}. \] Our results give a new approach to solving a conjecture of Lund-Pham-Thu in all dimensions and for all ranges of $\dim Y$. The first of our two methods for proving the above theorem is shorter, utilizing a result of the first author and Gan. Our second method, though longer, follows the original methodology of Orponen--Shmerkin--Wang, and requires a higher dimensional incidence estimate and a dual Furstenberg-set estimate for lines. These new estimates may be of independent interest.

A note on maximal operators for the Schr\"{o}dinger equation on $\mathbb{T}^1.$

Motivated by the study of the maximal operator for the Schr\"{o}dinger equation on the one-dimensional torus $ \mathbb{T}^1 $, it is conjectured that for any complex sequence $ \{b_n\}_{n=1}^N $, $$ \left\| \sup_{t\in [0,N^2]} \left|\sum_{n=1}^N b_n e \left(x\frac{n}{N} + t\frac{n^2}{N^2} \right) \right| \right\|_{L^4([0,N])} \leq C_\epsilon N^{\epsilon} N^{\frac{1}{2}} \|b_n\|_{\ell^2} $$ In this note, we show that if we replace the sequence $ \{\frac{n^2}{N^2}\}_{n=1}^N $ by an arbitrary sequence $ \{a_n\}_{n=1}^N $ with only some convex properties, then $$ \left\| \sup_{t\in [0,N^2]} \left|\sum_{n=1}^N b_n e \left(x\frac{n}{N} + ta_n \right) \right| \right\|_{L^4([0,N])} \leq C_\epsilon N^\epsilon N^{\frac{7}{12}} \|b_n\|_{\ell^2}. $$ We further show that this bound is sharp up to a $C_\epsilon N^\epsilon$ factor.

Zeros of dynamical zeta functions for hyperbolic quadradic maps

We prove that the dynamical zeta function $Z(s)$ associated to $z^2 + c$ with $c < -3.75$ has essential zero-free strips of size $1/2 +$, that is, for every $\epsilon > 0$, there exist only finitely many zeros in the strip $\mathrm{Re}(s) > 1/2 + \epsilon$. We also present some numerical plots of zeros of $Z(s)$ using the method proposed in Jenkinson-Pollicott.

Incidence estimates for $\alpha$-dimensional tubes and $\beta$-dimensional balls in $\mathbb{R}^2$

We prove essentially sharp incidence estimates for a collection of $\delta$-tubes and $\delta$-balls in the plane, where the $\delta$-tubes satisfy an $\alpha$-dimensional spacing condition and the $\delta$-balls satisfy a $\beta$-dimensional spacing condition. Our approach combines a combinatorial argument for small $\alpha, \beta$ and a Fourier analytic argument for large $\alpha, \beta$. As an application, we prove a new lower bound for the size of a $(u,v)$-Furstenberg set when $v \ge 1, u + \frac{v}{2} \ge 1$, which is sharp when $u + v \ge 2$. We also show a new lower bound for the discretized sum-product problem.

Sharp superlevel set estimates for small cap decouplings of the parabola

We prove sharp bounds for the size of superlevel sets $\{x\in \mathbb{R}^2:|f(x)|>\alpha\}$ where $\alpha>0$ and $f:\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{C}$ is a Schwartz function with Fourier transform supported in an $R^{-1}$-neighborhood of the truncated parabola $\mathbb{P}^1$. These estimates imply the small cap decoupling theorem for $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Demeter, Guth, and Wang, and the canonical decoupling theorem for $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Bourgain and Demeter. New $(\ell^q,L^p)$ small cap decoupling inequalities also follow from our sharp level set estimates.

Decoupling inequalities for short generalized Dirichlet sequences

We study decoupling theory for functions on $\mathbb{R}$ with Fourier transform supported in a neighborhood of short Dirichlet sequences $\{\log n\}_{n=N+1}^{N+N^{1/2}}$, as well as sequences with similar convexity properties. We utilize the wave packet structure of functions with frequency support near an arithmetic progression.

On Kakeya maps with regularity assumptions

In $\mathbb R^n$, we parametrize Kakeya sets using Kakeya maps. A Kakeya map is defined to be a map $$\phi:B^{n-1}(0,1)\times [0,1]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n}, (v,t)\mapsto (c(v)+tv,t),$$ where $ c:B^{n-1}(0,1)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$. The associated Kakeya set is defined to be $ K:=\text{Im} (\phi). $ We show that the Kakeya set $K$ has positive measure if either one of the following conditions is true. (1) $c$ is continuous and $c|_{S^{n-2}}\in C^\alpha(S^{n-2})$ for some $\alpha>\frac{(n-2)n}{(n-1)^2}$, (2) $c$ is continuous and $c|_{S^{n-2}}\in W^{1,p}(S^{n-2})$ for some $p>n-2$.

Null structures and degenerate dispersion relations in two space dimensions

Motivated by water-wave problems, in this paper we consider a class of nonlinear dispersive PDEs in 2D with cubic nonlinearities, whose dispersion relations are radial and have vanishing Guassian curvature on a circle. For such a model we identify certain null structures for the cubic nonlinearity, which suffice in order to guarantee global scattering solutions for the small data problem. Our null structures in the power-type nonlinearity are weak, and only eliminate the worst nonlinear interaction. Such null structures arise naturally in some water-wave problems.
