A Study of Cross-Lingual Ability and Language-specific Information in Multilingual BERT

Recently, multilingual BERT works remarkably well on cross-lingual transfer tasks, superior to static non-contextualized word embeddings. In this work, we provide an in-depth experimental study to supplement the existing literature of cross-lingual ability. We compare the cross-lingual ability of non-contextualized and contextualized representation model with the same data. We found that datasize and context window size are crucial factors to the transferability. We also observe the language-specific information in multilingual BERT. By manipulating the latent representations, we can control the output languages of multilingual BERT, and achieve unsupervised token translation. We further show that based on the observation, there is a computationally cheap but effective approach to improve the cross-lingual ability of multilingual BERT.

Towards Understanding of Medical Randomized Controlled Trials by Conclusion Generation

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) represent the paramount evidence of clinical medicine. Using machines to interpret the massive amount of RCTs has the potential of aiding clinical decision-making. We propose a RCT conclusion generation task from the PubMed 200k RCT sentence classification dataset to examine the effectiveness of sequence-to-sequence models on understanding RCTs. We first build a pointer-generator baseline model for conclusion generation. Then we fine-tune the state-of-the-art GPT-2 language model, which is pre-trained with general domain data, for this new medical domain task. Both automatic and human evaluation show that our GPT-2 fine-tuned models achieve improved quality and correctness in the generated conclusions compared to the baseline pointer-generator model. Further inspection points out the limitations of this current approach and future directions to explore.

Robust Chinese Word Segmentation with Contextualized Word Representations

In recent years, after the neural-network-based method was proposed, the accuracy of the Chinese word segmentation task has made great progress. However, when dealing with out-of-vocabulary words, there is still a large error rate. We used a simple bidirectional LSTM architecture and a large-scale pretrained language model to generate high-quality contextualize character representations, which successfully reduced the weakness of the ambiguous meanings of each Chinese character that widely appears in Chinese characters, and hence effectively reduced OOV error rate. State-of-the-art performance is achieved on many datasets.
