UniSim: A Neural Closed-Loop Sensor Simulator

Rigorously testing autonomy systems is essential for making safe self-driving vehicles (SDV) a reality. It requires one to generate safety critical scenarios beyond what can be collected safely in the world, as many scenarios happen rarely on public roads. To accurately evaluate performance, we need to test the SDV on these scenarios in closed-loop, where the SDV and other actors interact with each other at each timestep. Previously recorded driving logs provide a rich resource to build these new scenarios from, but for closed loop evaluation, we need to modify the sensor data based on the new scene configuration and the SDV's decisions, as actors might be added or removed and the trajectories of existing actors and the SDV will differ from the original log. In this paper, we present UniSim, a neural sensor simulator that takes a single recorded log captured by a sensor-equipped vehicle and converts it into a realistic closed-loop multi-sensor simulation. UniSim builds neural feature grids to reconstruct both the static background and dynamic actors in the scene, and composites them together to simulate LiDAR and camera data at new viewpoints, with actors added or removed and at new placements. To better handle extrapolated views, we incorporate learnable priors for dynamic objects, and leverage a convolutional network to complete unseen regions. Our experiments show UniSim can simulate realistic sensor data with small domain gap on downstream tasks. With UniSim, we demonstrate closed-loop evaluation of an autonomy system on safety-critical scenarios as if it were in the real world.

Target Search and Navigation in Heterogeneous Robot Systems with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Collaborative heterogeneous robot systems can greatly improve the efficiency of target search and navigation tasks. In this paper, we design a heterogeneous robot system consisting of a UAV and a UGV for search and rescue missions in unknown environments. The system is able to search for targets and navigate to them in a maze-like mine environment with the policies learned through deep reinforcement learning algorithms. During the training process, if two robots are trained simultaneously, the rewards related to their collaboration may not be properly obtained. Hence, we introduce a multi-stage reinforcement learning framework and a curiosity module to encourage agents to explore unvisited environments. Experiments in simulation environments show that our framework can train the heterogeneous robot system to achieve the search and navigation with unknown target locations while existing baselines may not, and accelerate the training speed.

New Cross-Core Cache-Agnostic and Prefetcher-based Side-Channels and Covert-Channels

In this paper, we reveal the existence of a new class of prefetcher, the XPT prefetcher, in the modern Intel processors which has never been officially documented. It speculatively issues a load, bypassing last-level cache (LLC) lookups, when it predicts that a load request will result in an LLC miss. We demonstrate that XPT prefetcher is shared among different cores, which enables an attacker to build cross-core side-channel and covert-channel attacks. We propose PrefetchX, a cross-core attack mechanism, to leak users' sensitive data and activities. We empirically demonstrate that PrefetchX can be used to extract private keys of real-world RSA applications. Furthermore, we show that PrefetchX can enable side-channel attacks that can monitor keystrokes and network traffic patterns of users. Our two cross-core covert-channel attacks also see a low error rate and a 1.7MB/s maximum channel capacity. Due to the cache-independent feature of PrefetchX, current cache-based mitigations are not effective against our attacks. Overall, our work uncovers a significant vulnerability in the XPT prefetcher, which can be exploited to compromise the confidentiality of sensitive information in both crypto and non-crypto-related applications among processor cores.

Cosmological application of the lens-redshift probability distribution with improved galaxy-scale gravitational lensing sample

We conduct the cosmological analysis by using the lens-redshift distribution test with updated galaxy-scale strong lensing sample, where the considered scenarios involve three typical cosmological models (i.e., $Λ$CDM, $ω$CDM and $ω_0ω_a$CDM models) and three typical choices (i.e., non-evolving, power-law and exponential forms) for the velocity-dispersion distribution function (VDF) of lens galaxies. It shows that degeneracies between cosmological and VDF parameters lead to the shifts of estimates on the parameters. The limits on $Ω_{m0}$ from the lens-redshift distribution are consistent with those from the Pantheon+ Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) sample at 68.3% confidence level, though the uncertainties on $Ω_{m0}$ from the former are about 3 to 8 times larger than those from the latter. The mean values of $Ω_{m0}$ shift to the larger values in the power-law VDF case and to the lower values in the exponential VDF case, compared with those obtained in the non-evolving VDF case. In the $ω$CDM model, the limits on $ω_0$, i.e. the dark energy equation of state (EoS), are consistent with those from the Pantheon+ sample at 68.3% confidence level, but the mean values of $ω_0$ from the former are significantly smaller than those from the latter. In the $ω_0ω_a$CDM model, the uncertainties on $ω_0$ are dramatically enlarged compared with those obtained in the $ω$CDM model; moreover, the Markov chains of $ω_a$, i.e. the time-varying slope of EoS, do not achieve convergence in the three VDF cases. Overall, the lens-redshift distribution test is more effective on constraining $Ω_{m0}$ than on the dark energy EoS.

Comprehensive ab initio study of effects of alloying elements on generalized stacking fault energies of Ni and Ni$_3$Al

Excellent high-temperature mechanical properties of Ni-based single crystal superalloys (NSCSs) are attributed to the yield strength anomaly of Ni$_{3}$Al that is intimately related to generalized stacking fault energies (GSFEs). Therefore, clarifying the effects of alloying elements on the GSFEs is of great significance for alloys design. Here, by means of ab initio density functional theory calculations, we systematically calculated the GSFEs of different slip systems of Ni and Ni$_{3}$Al without and with alloying elements using the alias shear method. We obtained that for Ni, except for magnetic elements Mn, Fe, and Co, most of alloying elements decrease the unstable stacking fault energy ($γ_{usf}$) of the $[01\bar{1}](111)$ and $[11\bar{2}](111)$ slip systems and also decrease the stable stacking fault energy ($γ_{sf}$) of the $[11\bar{2}](111)$ slip system. For Ni$_{3}$Al, most of alloying elements in groups IIIB-VIIB show a strong Al site preference. Except for Mn and Fe, the elements in groups VB-VIIB and the first column of group VIII increase the values of $γ_{usf}$ of different slip systems of Ni$_{3}$Al. On the other hand, the elements in groups IIIB-VIIB also increase the value of $γ_{sf}$. We found that Re is an excellent strengthening alloying element that significantly increases the slip barrier of the tailing slip process for Ni, and also enhances the slip barrier of the leading slip process of three slip systems for Ni$_{3}$Al. W and Mo exhibit similar effects as Re. We predicted that Os, Ru, and Ir are good strengthening alloying elements as well, since they show the strengthening effects on both the leading and tailing slip process for Ni and Ni$_{3}$Al.

The multiplexed light storage of Orbital Angular Momentum based on atomic ensembles

The improvement of the multi-mode capability of quantum memory can further improve the utilization efficiency of the quantum memory and reduce the requirement of quantum communication for storage units. In this letter, we experimentally investigate the multi-mode light multiplexing storage of orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode based on rubidium vapor, and demultiplexing by a photonic OAM mode splitter which combines a Sagnac loop with two dove prisms. Our results show a mode extinction ratio higher than 80$\%$ at 1 $μ$s of storage time. Meanwhile, two OAM modes have been multiplexing stored and demultiplexed in our experimental configuration. We believe the experimental scheme may provide a possibility for high channel capacity and multi-mode quantum multiplexed quantum storage based on atomic ensembles.

Multilingual Sentence Transformer as A Multilingual Word Aligner

Multilingual pretrained language models (mPLMs) have shown their effectiveness in multilingual word alignment induction. However, these methods usually start from mBERT or XLM-R. In this paper, we investigate whether multilingual sentence Transformer LaBSE is a strong multilingual word aligner. This idea is non-trivial as LaBSE is trained to learn language-agnostic sentence-level embeddings, while the alignment extraction task requires the more fine-grained word-level embeddings to be language-agnostic. We demonstrate that the vanilla LaBSE outperforms other mPLMs currently used in the alignment task, and then propose to finetune LaBSE on parallel corpus for further improvement. Experiment results on seven language pairs show that our best aligner outperforms previous state-of-the-art models of all varieties. In addition, our aligner supports different language pairs in a single model, and even achieves new state-of-the-art on zero-shot language pairs that does not appear in the finetuning process.

PrivateRec: Differentially Private Training and Serving for Federated News Recommendation

Collecting and training over sensitive personal data raise severe privacy concerns in personalized recommendation systems, and federated learning can potentially alleviate the problem by training models over decentralized user data. However, a theoretically private solution in both the training and serving stages of federated recommendation is essential but still lacking.Furthermore, naively applying differential privacy (DP) to the two stages in federated recommendation would fail to achieve a satisfactory trade-off between privacy and utility due to the high-dimensional characteristics of model gradients and hidden representations. In this work, we propose a federated news recommendation method for achieving a better utility in model training and online serving under a DP guarantee. We first clarify the DP definition over behavior data for each round in the life-circle of federated recommendation systems.Next, we propose a privacy-preserving online serving mechanism under this definition based on the idea of decomposing user embeddings with public basic vectors and perturbing the lower-dimensional combination coefficients. We apply a random behavior padding mechanism to reduce the required noise intensity for better utility. Besides, we design a federated recommendation model training method, which can generate effective and public basic vectors for serving while providing DP for training participants. We avoid the dimension-dependent noise for large models via label permutation and differentially private attention modules. Experiments on real-world news recommendation datasets validate that our method achieves superior utility under a DP guarantee in both training and serving of federated news recommendations.

Lexical Complexity Controlled Sentence Generation

Text generation rarely considers the control of lexical complexity, which limits its more comprehensive practical application. We introduce a novel task of lexical complexity controlled sentence generation, which aims at keywords to sentence generation with desired complexity levels. It has enormous potential in domains such as grade reading, language teaching and acquisition. The challenge of this task is to generate fluent sentences only using the words of given complexity levels. We propose a simple but effective approach for this task based on complexity embedding. Compared with potential solutions, our approach fuses the representations of the word complexity levels into the model to get better control of lexical complexity. And we demonstrate the feasibility of the approach for both training models from scratch and fine-tuning the pre-trained models. To facilitate the research, we develop two datasets in English and Chinese respectively, on which extensive experiments are conducted. Results show that our approach better controls lexical complexity and generates higher quality sentences than baseline methods.

Multi-task unscented Kalman inversion (MUKI): a derivative-free joint inversion framework and its application to joint inversion of geophysical data

In the geophysical joint inversion, the gradient and Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling-based methods are widely used owing to their fast convergences or global optimality. However, these methods either require the computation of gradients and easily fall into local optimal solutions, or cost much time to carry out the millions of forward calculations in a huge sampling space. Different from these two methods, taking advantage of the recently developed unscented Kalman method in computational mathematics, we extend an iterative gradient-free Bayesian joint inversion framework, i.e., Multi-task unscented Kalman inversion (MUKI). In this new framework, information from various observations is incorporated, the model is iteratively updated in a derivative-free way, and a Gaussian approximation to the posterior distribution of the model parameters is obtained. We apply the MUKI to the joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersion, which is well-established and widely used to construct the crustal and upper mantle structure of the earth. Based on synthesized and real data, the tests demonstrate that MUKI can recover the model more efficiently than the gradient-based method and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, and it would be a promising approach to resolve the geophysical joint inversion problems.

Angular dependency of spatial frequency modulation in diffusion media

An optical field will undergo coherent diffusion when it is mapped into thermal-motioned atoms, e.g., in a slow or storage light process. As was demonstrated before, such diffusion effect is equivalent to a spatial low-pass filter attenuating the high spatial frequency (SF) components of the optical field. Here, employing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) based light storage in hot atomic vapor, we demonstrate that the angular deviation between the control and probe beams could be utilized as a degree of freedom to modulate the SF of the probe beam. The principle is to change the diffusion-induced low-pass filter into a band-pass filter, whose SF response can be tuned by varying the direction and magnitude of the angular deviation. Transverse multimode light fields, such as optical images and Laguerre-Gaussian modes are utilized to study such SF modulation. Our findings could be broadly applied to the fields of quantum information processing, all-optical image manipulation and imaging through diffusive media.

LitMind Dictionary: An Open-Source Online Dictionary

Dictionaries can help language learners to learn vocabulary by providing definitions of words. Since traditional dictionaries present word senses as discrete items in predefined inventories, they fall short of flexibility, which is required in providing specific meanings of words in particular contexts. In this paper, we introduce the LitMind Dictionary (https://dictionary.litmind.ink), an open-source online generative dictionary that takes a word and context containing the word as input and automatically generates a definition as output. Incorporating state-of-the-art definition generation models, it supports not only Chinese and English, but also Chinese-English cross-lingual queries. Moreover, it has a user-friendly front-end design that can help users understand the query words quickly and easily. All the code and data are available at https://github.com/blcuicall/litmind-dictionary.

Comparing the scalar-field dark energy models with recent observations

We investigate the general properties of a class of scalar-field dark energy models (i.e., $ϕ$CDM models) which behave like cosmological trackers at early times. Particularly, we choose three $ϕ$CDM models with typical potentials, i.e., $V(ϕ)\propto ϕ^{-α}$ (inverse power-law (IPL) model), $V(ϕ)\propto \coth^αϕ$ (L-model) and $V(ϕ)\propto \cosh(αϕ)$ (Oscillatory tracker model), where the latter two models are based on the $α$-attractors originated from the study of inflation. These models, which reduce to the $Λ$CDM model with $α\to 0$, are studied and compared with the recent observations, including the Pantheon sample of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurements extracted from 6dFGS, BOSS and eBOSS, as well as the temperature and polarization anisotropy power spectra data of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) from Planck 2018 results. The observational constraints from the combining sample (SNe Ia + BAO + CMB) indicate that none of the three $ϕ$CDM models exclude the $Λ$CDM model at $68.3\%$ confidence level. We find that the CMB anisotropy data have obvious advantages in constraining the dark energy models compared with other cosmological probes, which is particularly evident in the L-model. Furthermore, we apply the Bayesian evidence to compare the $ϕ$CDM models and the $Λ$CDM model with the analysis of the combining sample. The concordance $Λ$CDM model is still the most supported one. In addition, among the three $ϕ$CDM models, the IPL model is the most competitive one, while the L-model/Oscillatory tacker model is moderately/strongly disfavored.

Investigating the dynamical models of cosmology with recent observations and upcoming gravitational-wave data

We explore and compare the capabilities of the recent observations of standard cosmological probes and the future observations of gravitational-wave (GW) standard sirens on constraining cosmological parameters. It is carried out in the frameworks of two typical dynamical models of cosmology, i.e., the $ω_0ω_a$CDM model with $ω(z) = ω_0 +ω_a*z/(1+z)$, and the $ξ$-index model with $ρ_X\proptoρ_ma^ξ$, where $ω(z)$ is the dark energy equation of state, and $ρ_X$ and $ρ_m$ are the energy densities of dark energy and matter, respectively. In the cosmological analysis, the employed data sets include the recent observations of the standard cosmological probes, i.e., Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and cosmic microwave background (CMB), and also the mock GW standard siren sample with 1000 merging neutron star events anticipated from the third-generation detectors. In the scenarios of both $ω_0ω_a$CDM and $ξ$-index models, it turns out that the mock GW sample can reduce the uncertainty of the Hubble constant $H_0$ by about 50\% relative to that from the joint SNe+BAO+CMB sample; nevertheless, the SNe+BAO+CMB sample demonstrates better performance on limiting other parameters. Furthermore, the Bayesian evidence is applied to compare the dynamical models with the $Λ$CDM model. The Bayesian evidences computed from the SNe+BAO+CMB sample reveal that the $Λ$CDM model is the most supported one; moreover, the $ω_0ω_a$CDM model is more competitive than the $ξ$-index model.

Towards Making the Most of Multilingual Pretraining for Zero-Shot Neural Machine Translation

This paper demonstrates that multilingual pretraining and multilingual fine-tuning are both critical for facilitating cross-lingual transfer in zero-shot translation, where the neural machine translation (NMT) model is tested on source languages unseen during supervised training. Following this idea, we present SixT+, a strong many-to-English NMT model that supports 100 source languages but is trained with a parallel dataset in only six source languages. SixT+ initializes the decoder embedding and the full encoder with XLM-R large and then trains the encoder and decoder layers with a simple two-stage training strategy. SixT+ achieves impressive performance on many-to-English translation. It significantly outperforms CRISS and m2m-100, two strong multilingual NMT systems, with an average gain of 7.2 and 5.0 BLEU respectively. Additionally, SixT+ offers a set of model parameters that can be further fine-tuned to other unsupervised tasks. We demonstrate that adding SixT+ initialization outperforms state-of-the-art explicitly designed unsupervised NMT models on Si<->En and Ne<->En by over 1.2 average BLEU. When applied to zero-shot cross-lingual abstractive summarization, it produces an average performance gain of 12.3 ROUGE-L over mBART-ft. We conduct detailed analyses to understand the key ingredients of SixT+, including multilinguality of the auxiliary parallel data, positional disentangled encoder, and the cross-lingual transferability of its encoder.

Joint Initial Access and Localization in Millimeter Wave Vehicular Networks: a Hybrid Model/Data Driven Approach

High resolution compressive channel estimation provides information for vehicle localization when a hybrid mmWave MIMO system is considered. Complexity and memory requirements can, however, become a bottleneck when high accuracy localization is required. An additional challenge is the need of path order information to apply the appropriate geometric relationships between the channel path parameters and the vehicle, RSU and scatterers position. In this paper, we propose a low complexity channel estimation strategy of the angle of departure and time difference of arrival based on multidimensional orthogonal matching pursuit. We also design a deep neural network that predicts the order of the channel paths so only the LoS and first order reflections are used for localization. Simulation results obtained with realistic vehicular channels generated by ray tracing show that sub-meter accuracy can be achieved for 50% of the users, without resorting to perfect synchronization assumptions or unfeasible all-digital high resolution MIMO architectures.

Multitasking Framework for Unsupervised Simple Definition Generation

The definition generation task can help language learners by providing explanations for unfamiliar words. This task has attracted much attention in recent years. We propose a novel task of Simple Definition Generation (SDG) to help language learners and low literacy readers. A significant challenge of this task is the lack of learner's dictionaries in many languages, and therefore the lack of data for supervised training. We explore this task and propose a multitasking framework SimpDefiner that only requires a standard dictionary with complex definitions and a corpus containing arbitrary simple texts. We disentangle the complexity factors from the text by carefully designing a parameter sharing scheme between two decoders. By jointly training these components, the framework can generate both complex and simple definitions simultaneously. We demonstrate that the framework can generate relevant, simple definitions for the target words through automatic and manual evaluations on English and Chinese datasets. Our method outperforms the baseline model by a 1.77 SARI score on the English dataset, and raises the proportion of the low level (HSK level 1-3) words in Chinese definitions by 3.87%.

Molecular Orientation-Induced Second Harmonic Generation: deciphering different contributions apart

We demonstrate and explore an all-optical technique for direct monitoring the orientation dynamics of gas phase molecular ensembles. The technique termed 'MOISH' utilizes the transiently lifted inversion symmetry of polar gas media and provides a sensitive and spatially localized probing of second harmonic generation signal that is directly correlated with the orientation of the gas. Our experimental results reveal selective electronic and nuclear dynamical contributions to the overall nonlinear optical signal and decipher them apart using the "reporter gas" approach. 'MOISH' provides new, crucial means for exploring controlled rotational dynamics via concerted terahertz and optical field excitation.
