Correlated Electronic Structure and Incipient Flat Bands of the Kagome Superconductor CsCr3Sb5

Kagome materials exhibit many novel phenomena emerging from the interplay between lattice geometry, electronic structure, and topology. A prime example is the vanadium-based kagome materials AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with superconductivity and unconventional charge-density wave (CDW). More interestingly, the substitution of vanadium by chromium further introduces magnetism and enhances the correlation effect in CsCr3Sb5 which likewise exhibits superconductivity under pressure and competing density-wave state. Here we systematically investigate the electronic structure of CsCr3Sb5 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) and ab-initio calculations. Overall, the measured electronic structure agrees with the theoretical calculation. Remarkably, Cr 3d orbitals exhibit incoherent electronic states and contribute to incipient flat bands close to the Fermi level. The electronic structure shows a minor change across the magnetic transition at 55 K, suggesting a weak interplay between the local magnetic moment and itinerant electrons. Furthermore, we reveal a drastic enhancement of the electron scattering rate across the magnetic transition, which is relevant to the semiconducting-like transport property of the system at high temperatures. Our results suggest that CsCr3Sb5 is a strongly correlated Hund's metal with incipient flat bands near the Fermi level, which provides an electronic basis for understanding its novel properties in comparison to the non-magnetic and weakly correlated AV3Sb5.

Mott insulating phase and coherent-incoherent crossover across magnetic phase transition in 2D antiferromagnetic CrSBr

In two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, the interplay between magnetism and electron correlation can give rise to new ground states and lead to novel transport and optical properties. A fundamental question in these materials is how the electron correlation manifests and interacts with the magnetic orders. In this study, we demonstrate that the recently discovered 2D antiferromagnetic material, CrSBr, is a Mott insulator, through the combined use of resonant and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy techiniques, supplemented by dynamical mean-field theory analysis. Intriguingly, we found that as the system transitions from the antiferromagnetic to the paramagnetic phases, its Mott bands undergo a reconfiguration, and a coherent-incoherent crossover, driven by the dissolution of the magnetic order. Our findings reveal a distinctive evolution of band structure associated with magnetic phase transitions, shedding light on the investigation of intricate interplay between correlation and magnetic orders in strongly correlated van der Waals magnetic materials.

Tunable moiré bandgap in hBN-aligned bilayer graphene device with in-situ electrostatic gating

Over the years, great efforts have been devoted in introducing a sizable and tunable band gap in graphene for its potential application in next-generation electronic devices. The primary challenge in modulating this gap has been the absence of a direct method for observing changes of the band gap in momentum space. In this study, we employ advanced spatial- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy technique to directly visualize the gap formation in bilayer graphene, modulated by both displacement fields and moiré potentials. The application of displacement field via in-situ electrostatic gating introduces a sizable and tunable electronic bandgap, proportional to the field strength up to 100 meV. Meanwhile, the moiré potential, induced by aligning the underlying hexagonal boron nitride substrate, extends the bandgap by ~ 20 meV. Theoretical calculations, effectively capture the experimental observations. Our investigation provides a quantitative understanding of how these two mechanisms collaboratively modulate the band gap in bilayer graphene, offering valuable guidance for the design of graphene-based electronic devices.

Direct visualization of the impurity occupancy roadmap in Ni-substituted van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2

Impurity substitution is a general strategy to study the intrinsic properties of a quantum material. However, when the target element has more than one Wyckoff position in the lattice, it is a big challenge but with extreme necessity to know the exact position and order of the occupancy of impurity atoms. Via comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations, we establish herein the roadmap for Ni substitution in Fe3GaTe2, a van der Waals ferromagnet with the Curie temperature TC even reaching ~ 380 K. The results unambiguously reveal that in (Fe1-xNix)3GaTe2, Ni atoms initially form an van der Waals interlayer gap Ni3 sites when x < 0.1, and then gradually occupy the Fe2 sites. After replacing the Fe2 sites at x of ~ 0.75, they start to substitute for the Fe1 sites and eventually realize a full occupation at x = 1.0. Accordingly, TC and saturation magnetic moments of (Fe1-xNix)3GaTe2 both show nonlinear decrease, which is tightly tied to the Ni occupancy order as well as the different roles of Ni3, Fe1 and Fe2 sites in the spin Hamiltonian. The results not only yield fruitful insights into the essential roles of different Fe sites in producing the above room temperature high TC, but also set a paradigm for future impurity substitution study on other quantum materials.

Disorder-broadened phase boundary with enhanced amorphous superconductivity in pressurized In2Te5

As an empirical tool in materials science and engineering, the iconic phase diagram owes its robustness and practicality to the topological characteristics rooted in the celebrated Gibbs phase law (F = C - P + 2). When crossing the phase diagram boundary, the structure transition occurs abruptly, bringing about an instantaneous change in physical properties and limited controllability on the boundaries (F = 1). Here, we expand the sharp phase boundary to an amorphous transition region (F = 2) by partially disrupting the long-range translational symmetry, leading to a sequential crystalline-amorphous-crystalline (CAC) transition in a pressurized In2Te5 single crystal. Through detailed in-situ synchrotron diffraction, we elucidate that the phase transition stems from the rotation of immobile blocks [In2Te2]2+, linked by hinge-like [Te3]2- trimers. Remarkably, within the amorphous region, the amorphous phase demonstrates a notable 25 % increase of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), while the carrier concentration remains relatively constant. Furthermore, we propose a theoretical framework revealing that the unconventional boost in amorphous superconductivity might be attributed to an intensified electron correlation, triggered by a disorder-augmented multifractal behavior. These findings underscore the potential of disorder and prompt further exploration of unforeseen phenomena on the phase boundaries.

Medical Visual Prompting (MVP): A Unified Framework for Versatile and High-Quality Medical Image Segmentation

Accurate segmentation of lesion regions is crucial for clinical diagnosis and treatment across various diseases. While deep convolutional networks have achieved satisfactory results in medical image segmentation, they face challenges such as loss of lesion shape information due to continuous convolution and downsampling, as well as the high cost of manually labeling lesions with varying shapes and sizes. To address these issues, we propose a novel medical visual prompting (MVP) framework that leverages pre-training and prompting concepts from natural language processing (NLP). The framework utilizes three key components: Super-Pixel Guided Prompting (SPGP) for superpixelating the input image, Image Embedding Guided Prompting (IEGP) for freezing patch embedding and merging with superpixels to provide visual prompts, and Adaptive Attention Mechanism Guided Prompting (AAGP) for pinpointing prompt content and efficiently adapting all layers. By integrating SPGP, IEGP, and AAGP, the MVP enables the segmentation network to better learn shape prompting information and facilitates mutual learning across different tasks. Extensive experiments conducted on five datasets demonstrate superior performance of this method in various challenging medical image tasks, while simplifying single-task medical segmentation models. This novel framework offers improved performance with fewer parameters and holds significant potential for accurate segmentation of lesion regions in various medical tasks, making it clinically valuable.

Mastering Text, Code and Math Simultaneously via Fusing Highly Specialized Language Models

Underlying data distributions of natural language, programming code, and mathematical symbols vary vastly, presenting a complex challenge for large language models (LLMs) that strive to achieve high performance across all three domains simultaneously. Achieving a very high level of proficiency for an LLM within a specific domain often requires extensive training with relevant corpora, which is typically accompanied by a sacrifice in performance in other domains. In this paper, we propose to fuse models that are already highly-specialized directly. The proposed fusing framework, UltraFuser, consists of three distinct specialists that are already sufficiently trained on language, coding, and mathematics. A token-level gating mechanism is introduced to blend the specialists' outputs. A two-stage training strategy accompanied by balanced sampling is designed to ensure stability. To effectively train the fused model, we further construct a high-quality supervised instruction tuning dataset, UltraChat 2, which includes text, code, and mathematical content. This dataset comprises approximately 300,000 instructions and covers a wide range of topics in each domain. Experiments show that our model could simultaneously achieve mastery of the three crucial domains.

Deformed Laurent series rings and completions of the Weyl division ring

Let $ L((T^{-1}))$ be the space of (inverse) Laurent serieswith coefficients in some field $L$. It has a standard degree map and the induced topology. With its usual addition and a new product on this space which is continuous and preserves the standard degree map, it will be a complete topological division ring, and called a deformed Laurent series ring. Under mild restrictions, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a product on $ L((T^{-1}))$ to make it a deformed Laurent series ring. Then we apply the above theory to construct the completions of the Weyl division ring $D_1$, over some field of characteristic 0, with respect to a class of discrete valuations on it. Such completions are topological division rings with nice properties. For instance, their valuation rings are non-commutative Henselian rings; the centralizer of each element not in the center is commutative.

Pressure-induced structure phase transitions and superconductivity in dual topological insulator BiTe

The (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n homologous series possess natural multilayer heterostructure with intriguing physical properties at ambient pressure. Herein, we report the pressure-dependent evolution of the structure and electrical transport of the dual topological insulator BiTe, a member of the (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n series. With applied pressure, BiTe exhibits several different crystal structures and distinct superconducting states, which is remarkably similar to other members of the (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n series. Our results provide a systematic phase diagram for the pressure-induced superconductivity in BiTe, contributing to the highly interesting physics in this (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n series.

Modified trimaximal mixing for solar and reactor neutrino mixing angles

The trimaximal mixing scheme is one of the widely studied neutrino mixing schemes. However, the predicted solar neutrino mixing angle $θ_{12}$ and the reactor neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ cannot simultaneously realize their best-fit values. To address this issue, a minimal modification to the trimaximal mixing scheme is proposed. The modified trimaximal mixing scheme can simultaneously predict the best-fit values of $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{13}$ using an additional real parameter introduced via the modification.

Sparse Low-rank Adaptation of Pre-trained Language Models

Fine-tuning pre-trained large language models in a parameter-efficient manner is widely studied for its effectiveness and efficiency. The popular method of low-rank adaptation (LoRA) offers a notable approach, hypothesizing that the adaptation process is intrinsically low-dimensional. Although LoRA has demonstrated commendable performance, it is implemented with a fixed and unalterable intrinsic rank that might not always be the ideal choice. Recognizing the need for more flexible adaptation, we extend the methodology of LoRA to an innovative approach we call sparse low-rank adaptation (SoRA) that enables dynamic adjustments to the intrinsic rank during the adaptation process. We achieve this through the incorporation of a gate unit optimized with proximal gradient method in the training stage, controlling the cardinality of rank under the sparsity of the gate. In the subsequent inference stage, we eliminate the parameter blocks corresponding to the zeroed-out ranks, to reduce each SoRA module back to a concise yet rank-optimal LoRA. Our approach strengthens the representation power of LoRA by initializing it with a higher rank, while efficiently taming a temporarily increased number of parameters via updating in a sparse way. We further introduce a sparsifying scheduler for SoRA, aiming to examine the impact of the number of non-zero parameters on the model's memorization and generalization. Our experimental results demonstrate that SoRA can outperform other baselines even with 70% retained parameters and 70% training time.

Constructing the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in antiferromagnetic insulator CrOCl

Time reversal symmetry breaking in superconductors, resulting from external magnetic fields or spontaneous magnetization, often leads to unconventional superconducting properties. In this way, a conventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, characterized by the Cooper pairs with nonzero total momentum, may be realized by the Zeeman effect caused from external magnetic fields. Here, we report the observation of superconductivity in a few-layer antiferromagnetic insulator CrOCl by utilizing superconducting proximity effect with NbSe2 flakes. The superconductivity demonstrates a considerably weak gap of about 0.12 meV and the in-plane upper critical field reveals as behavior of the FFLO state at low temperature. Our first-principles calculations indicate that the proximitized superconductivity may exist in the CrOCl layer with Cr vacancies or line-defects. Moreover, the FFLO state could be induced by the inherent larger spin splitting in the CrOCl layer. Our findings not only demonstrate the fascinating interaction between superconductivity and magnetism, but also provide a possible path to construct FFLO state by intrinsic time reversal symmetry breaking and superconducting proximity effect.

Proximity effect induced intriguing superconductivity in van der Waals heterostructure of magnetic topological insulator and conventional superconductor

Nontrivial topological superconductivity has received enormous research attentions due to its potential for diverse applications in topological quantum computing. The intrinsic issue concerning the correlation between a topological insulator and a superconductor is, however, still widely open. Here, we systemically report an emergent superconductivity in a cross-junction composed of a magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 and a conventional superconductor NbSe2. Remarkably, the interface indicates existence of a reduced superconductivity at surface of NbSe2 and a proximity-effectinduced superconductivity at surface of MnBi2Te4. Furthermore, the in-plane angular-dependent magnetoresistance measurements reveal the fingerprints of the paring symmetry behaviors for these superconducting gaps as a unconventional nature. Our findings extend our views and ideas of topological superconductivity in the superconducting heterostructures with time-reversal symmetry breaking, offering an exciting opportunity to elucidate the cooperative effects on the surface state of a topological insulator aligning a superconductor.

A Read-and-Select Framework for Zero-shot Entity Linking

Zero-shot entity linking (EL) aims at aligning entity mentions to unseen entities to challenge the generalization ability. Previous methods largely focus on the candidate retrieval stage and ignore the essential candidate ranking stage, which disambiguates among entities and makes the final linking prediction. In this paper, we propose a read-and-select (ReS) framework by modeling the main components of entity disambiguation, i.e., mention-entity matching and cross-entity comparison. First, for each candidate, the reading module leverages mention context to output mention-aware entity representations, enabling mention-entity matching. Then, in the selecting module, we frame the choice of candidates as a sequence labeling problem, and all candidate representations are fused together to enable cross-entity comparison. Our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the established zero-shot EL dataset ZESHEL with a 2.55% micro-average accuracy gain, with no need for laborious multi-phase pre-training used in most of the previous work, showing the effectiveness of both mention-entity and cross-entity interaction.

Revisiting Sparse Retrieval for Few-shot Entity Linking

Entity linking aims to link ambiguous mentions to their corresponding entities in a knowledge base. One of the key challenges comes from insufficient labeled data for specific domains. Although dense retrievers have achieved excellent performance on several benchmarks, their performance decreases significantly when only a limited amount of in-domain labeled data is available. In such few-shot setting, we revisit the sparse retrieval method, and propose an ELECTRA-based keyword extractor to denoise the mention context and construct a better query expression. For training the extractor, we propose a distant supervision method to automatically generate training data based on overlapping tokens between mention contexts and entity descriptions. Experimental results on the ZESHEL dataset demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art models by a significant margin across all test domains, showing the effectiveness of keyword-enhanced sparse retrieval.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity and Structure Phase Transition in SnAs-based Zintl Compound SrSn2As2

Layered SnAs-based Zintl compounds exhibit a distinctive electronic structure, igniting extensive research efforts in areas of superconductivity, topological insulators and quantum magnetism. In this paper, we systematically investigate the crystal structures and electronic properties of the Zintl compound SrSn2As2 under high-pressure. At approximately 20.8 GPa, pressure-induced superconductivity is observed in SrSn2As2 with a characteristic dome-like evolution of Tc. Theoretical calculations together with high pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have identified that SrSn2As2 undergoes a structural transformation from a trigonal to a monoclinic structure. Beyond 28.3 GPa, the superconducting transition temperature is suppressed due to a reduction of the density of state at the Fermi level. The discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity, accompanied by structural transitions in SrSn2As2, greatly expands the physical properties of layered SnAs-based compounds and provides a new ground states upon compression.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity and Topological Quantum Phase Transitions in the Topological Semimetal ZrTe2

Topological transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted much attention due to its potential applications in spintronics and quantum computations. In this work, we systematically investigate the structural and electronic properties of topological TMDCs candidate ZrTe2 under high pressure. A pressure-induced Lifshitz transition is evidenced by the change of charge carrier type as well as the Fermi surface. Superconductivity was observed at around 8.3 GPa without structural phase transition. A typical dome-shape phase diagram is obtained with the maximum Tc of 5.6 K for ZrTe2. Furthermore, our theoretical calculations suggest the presence of multiple pressure-induced topological quantum phase transitions, which coexists with emergence of superconductivity. The results demonstrate that ZrTe2 with nontrivial topology of electronic states display new ground states upon compression.

Disassembling one-dimensional chains in molybdenum oxides

The dimensionality of quantum materials strongly affects their physical properties. Although many emergent phenomena, such as charge-density wave and Luttinger liquid behavior, are well understood in one-dimensional (1D) systems, the generalization to explore them in higher dimensional systems is still a challenging task. In this study, we aim to bridge this gap by systematically investigating the crystal and electronic structures of molybdenum-oxide family compounds, where the contexture of 1D chains facilitates rich emergent properties. While the quasi-1D chains in these materials share general similarities, such as the motifs made up of MoO6 octahedrons, they exhibit vast complexity and remarkable tunability. We disassemble the 1D chains in molybdenum oxides with different dimensions and construct effective models to excellently fit their low-energy electronic structures obtained by ab initio calculations. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of such chains on other physical properties of the materials and the practical significance of the effective models. Our work establishes the molybdenum oxides as simple and tunable model systems for studying and manipulating the dimensionality in quantum systems.
