Efficient Object Manipulation to an Arbitrary Goal Pose: Learning-based Anytime Prioritized Planning

We focus on the task of object manipulation to an arbitrary goal pose, in which a robot is supposed to pick an assigned object to place at the goal position with a specific orientation. However, limited by the execution space of the manipulator with gripper, one-step picking, moving and releasing might be failed, where a reorientation object pose is required as a transition. In this paper, we propose a learning-driven anytime prioritized search-based solver to find a feasible solution with low path cost in a short time. In our work, the problem is formulated as a hierarchical learning problem, with the high level finding a reorientation object pose, and the low level planning paths between adjacent grasps. We learn an offline-training path cost estimator to predict approximate path planning costs, which serve as pseudo rewards to allow for pre-training the high-level planner without interacting with the simulator. To deal with the problem of distribution mismatch of the cost net and the actual execution cost space, a refined training stage is conducted with simulation interaction. A series of experiments carried out in simulation and real world indicate that our system can achieve better performances in the object manipulation task with less time and less cost.

Inference on the structure of gene regulatory networks

In this paper, we conduct theoretical analyses on inferring the structure of gene regulatory networks. Depending on the experimental method and data type, the inference problem is classified into 20 different scenarios. For each scenario, we discuss the problem that with enough data, under what assumptions, what can be inferred about the structure. For scenarios that have been covered in the literature, we provide a brief review. For scenarios that have not been covered in literature, if the structure can be inferred, we propose new mathematical inference methods and evaluate them on simulated data. Otherwise, we prove that the structure cannot be inferred.

Feature-based Style Randomization for Domain Generalization

As a recent noticeable topic, domain generalization (DG) aims to first learn a generic model on multiple source domains and then directly generalize to an arbitrary unseen target domain without any additional adaption. In previous DG models, by generating virtual data to supplement observed source domains, the data augmentation based methods have shown its effectiveness. To simulate the possible unseen domains, most of them enrich the diversity of original data via image-level style transformation. However, we argue that the potential styles are hard to be exhaustively illustrated and fully augmented due to the limited referred styles, leading the diversity could not be always guaranteed. Unlike image-level augmentation, we in this paper develop a simple yet effective feature-based style randomization module to achieve feature-level augmentation, which can produce random styles via integrating random noise into the original style. Compared with existing image-level augmentation, our feature-level augmentation favors a more goal-oriented and sample-diverse way. Furthermore, to sufficiently explore the efficacy of the proposed module, we design a novel progressive training strategy to enable all parameters of the network to be fully trained. Extensive experiments on three standard benchmark datasets, i.e., PACS, VLCS and Office-Home, highlight the superiority of our method compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Tac3D: A Novel Vision-based Tactile Sensor for Measuring Forces Distribution and Estimating Friction Coefficient Distribution

The importance of force perception in interacting with the environment was proven years ago. However, it is still a challenge to measure the contact force distribution accurately in real-time. In order to break through this predicament, we propose a new vision-based tactile sensor, the Tac3D sensor, for measuring the three-dimensional contact surface shape and contact force distribution. In this work, virtual binocular vision is first applied to the tactile sensor, which allows the Tac3D sensor to measure the three-dimensional tactile information in a simple and efficient way and has the advantages of simple structure, low computational costs, and inexpensive. Then, we used contact surface shape and force distribution to estimate the friction coefficient distribution in contact region. Further, combined with the global position of the tactile sensor, the 3D model of the object with friction coefficient distribution is reconstructed. These reconstruction experiments not only demonstrate the excellent performance of the Tac3D sensor but also imply the possibility to optimize the action planning in grasping based on the friction coefficient distribution of the object.

BEV-SGD: Best Effort Voting SGD for Analog Aggregation Based Federated Learning against Byzantine Attackers

As a promising distributed learning technology, analog aggregation based federated learning over the air (FLOA) provides high communication efficiency and privacy provisioning under the edge computing paradigm. When all edge devices (workers) simultaneously upload their local updates to the parameter server (PS) through commonly shared time-frequency resources, the PS obtains the averaged update only rather than the individual local ones. While such a concurrent transmission and aggregation scheme reduces the latency and communication costs, it unfortunately renders FLOA vulnerable to Byzantine attacks. Aiming at Byzantine-resilient FLOA, this paper starts from analyzing the channel inversion (CI) mechanism that is widely used for power control in FLOA. Our theoretical analysis indicates that although CI can achieve good learning performance in the benign scenarios, it fails to work well with limited defensive capability against Byzantine attacks. Then, we propose a novel scheme called the best effort voting (BEV) power control policy that is integrated with stochastic gradient descent (SGD). Our BEV-SGD enhances the robustness of FLOA to Byzantine attacks, by allowing all the workers to send their local updates at their maximum transmit power. Under worst-case attacks, we derive the expected convergence rates of FLOA with CI and BEV power control policies, respectively. The rate comparison reveals that our BEV-SGD outperforms its counterpart with CI in terms of better convergence behavior, which is verified by experimental simulations.

Context-Based MEC Platform for Augmented-Reality Services in 5G Networks

Augmented reality (AR) has drawn great attention in recent years. However, current AR devices have drawbacks, e.g., weak computation ability and large power consumption. To solve the problem, mobile edge computing (MEC) can be introduced as a key technology to offload data and computation from AR devices to MEC servers via 5th Generation Mobile Communication Technology (5G) networks. To this end, a context-based MEC platform for AR services in 5G networks is proposed in this paper. On the platform, MEC is employed as a data processing center while AR devices are simplified as universal input/output devices, which overcomes their limitations and achieves better user experience. Moreover, the proof-of-concept (PoC) hardware prototype of the platform, and two typical use cases providing AR services of navigation and face recognition respectively are implemented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the platform. Finally, the performance of the platform is also numerically evaluated, and the results validate the system design and agree well with the design expectations.

Writing Style Aware Document-level Event Extraction

Event extraction, the technology that aims to automatically get the structural information from documents, has attracted more and more attention in many fields. Most existing works discuss this issue with the token-level multi-label classification framework by distinguishing the tokens as different roles while ignoring the writing styles of documents. The writing style is a special way of content organizing for documents and it is relative fixed in documents with a special field (e.g. financial, medical documents, etc.). We argue that the writing style contains important clues for judging the roles for tokens and the ignorance of such patterns might lead to the performance degradation for the existing works. To this end, we model the writing style in documents as a distribution of argument roles, i.e., Role-Rank Distribution, and propose an event extraction model with the Role-Rank Distribution based Supervision Mechanism to capture this pattern through the supervised training process of an event extraction task. We compare our model with state-of-the-art methods on several real-world datasets. The empirical results show that our approach outperforms other alternatives with the captured patterns. This verifies the writing style contains valuable information that could improve the performance of the event extraction task.

Bayesian Optimization Based Trustworthiness Model for Multi-robot Bounding Overwatch

In multi-robot system (MRS) bounding overwatch, it is crucial to determine which point to choose for overwatch at each step and whether the robots' positions are trustworthy so that the overwatch can be performed effectively. In this paper, we develop a Bayesian optimization based computational trustworthiness model (CTM) for the MRS to select overwatch points. The CTM can provide real-time trustworthiness evaluation for the MRS on the overwatch points by referring to the robots' situational awareness information, such as traversability and line of sight. The evaluation can quantify each robot's trustworthiness in protecting its robot team members during the bounding overwatch. The trustworthiness evaluation can generate a dynamic cost map for each robot in the workspace and help obtain the most trustworthy bounding overwatch path. Our proposed Bayesian based CTM and motion planning can reduce the number of explorations for the workspace in data collection and improve the CTM learning efficiency. It also enables the MRS to deal with the dynamic and uncertain environments for the multi-robot bounding overwatch task. A robot simulation is implemented in ROS Gazebo to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Trust-based Symbolic Motion Planning for Multi-robot Bounding Overwatch

Multi-robot bounding overwatch requires timely coordination of robot team members. Symbolic motion planning (SMP) can provide provably correct solutions for robot motion planning with high-level temporal logic task requirements. This paper aims to develop a framework for safe and reliable SMP of multi-robot systems (MRS) to satisfy complex bounding overwatch tasks constrained by temporal logics. A decentralized SMP framework is first presented, which guarantees both correctness and parallel execution of the complex bounding overwatch tasks by the MRS. A computational trust model is then constructed by referring to the traversability and line of sight of robots in the terrain. The trust model predicts the trustworthiness of each robot team's potential behavior in executing a task plan. The most trustworthy task and motion plan is explored with a Dijkstra searching strategy to guarantee the reliability of MRS bounding overwatch. A robot simulation is implemented in ROS Gazebo to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

SmartDeal: Re-Modeling Deep Network Weights for Efficient Inference and Training

The record-breaking performance of deep neural networks (DNNs) comes with heavy parameterization, leading to external dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) for storage. The prohibitive energy of DRAM accesses makes it non-trivial to deploy DNN on resource-constrained devices, calling for minimizing the weight and data movements to improve the energy efficiency. We present SmartDeal (SD), an algorithm framework to trade higher-cost memory storage/access for lower-cost computation, in order to aggressively boost the storage and energy efficiency, for both inference and training. The core of SD is a novel weight decomposition with structural constraints, carefully crafted to unleash the hardware efficiency potential. Specifically, we decompose each weight tensor as the product of a small basis matrix and a large structurally sparse coefficient matrix whose non-zeros are quantized to power-of-2. The resulting sparse and quantized DNNs enjoy greatly reduced energy for data movement and weight storage, incurring minimal overhead to recover the original weights thanks to the sparse bit-operations and cost-favorable computations. Beyond inference, we take another leap to embrace energy-efficient training, introducing innovative techniques to address the unique roadblocks arising in training while preserving the SD structures. We also design a dedicated hardware accelerator to fully utilize the SD structure to improve the real energy efficiency and latency. We conduct experiments on both multiple tasks, models and datasets in different settings. Results show that: 1) applied to inference, SD achieves up to 2.44x energy efficiency as evaluated via real hardware implementations; 2) applied to training, SD leads to 10.56x and 4.48x reduction in the storage and training energy, with negligible accuracy loss compared to state-of-the-art training baselines. Robust factored principal component analysis for matrix-valued outlier accommodation and detection

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a popular dimension reduction technique for vector data. Factored PCA (FPCA) is a probabilistic extension of PCA for matrix data, which can substantially reduce the number of parameters in PCA while yield satisfactory performance. However, FPCA is based on the Gaussian assumption and thereby susceptible to outliers. Although the multivariate $t$ distribution as a robust modeling tool for vector data has a very long history, its application to matrix data is very limited. The main reason is that the dimension of the vectorized matrix data is often very high and the higher the dimension, the lower the breakdown point that measures the robustness. To solve the robustness problem suffered by FPCA and make it applicable to matrix data, in this paper we propose a robust extension of FPCA (RFPCA), which is built upon a $t$-type distribution called matrix-variate $t$ distribution. Like the multivariate $t$ distribution, the matrix-variate $t$ distribution can adaptively down-weight outliers and yield robust estimates. We develop a fast EM-type algorithm for parameter estimation. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets reveal that RFPCA is compared favorably with several related methods and RFPCA is a simple but powerful tool for matrix-valued outlier detection.

Auto-Tag: Tagging-Data-By-Example in Data Lakes

As data lakes become increasingly popular in large enterprises today, there is a growing need to tag or classify data assets (e.g., files and databases) in data lakes with additional metadata (e.g., semantic column-types), as the inferred metadata can enable a range of downstream applications like data governance (e.g., GDPR compliance), and dataset search. Given the sheer size of today's enterprise data lakes with petabytes of data and millions of data assets, it is imperative that data assets can be ``auto-tagged'', using lightweight inference algorithms and minimal user input. In this work, we develop Auto-Tag, a corpus-driven approach that automates data-tagging of \textit{custom} data types in enterprise data lakes. Using Auto-Tag, users only need to provide \textit{one} example column to demonstrate the desired data-type to tag. Leveraging an index structure built offline using a lightweight scan of the data lake, which is analogous to pre-training in machine learning, Auto-Tag can infer suitable data patterns to best ``describe'' the underlying ``domain'' of the given column at an interactive speed, which can then be used to tag additional data of the same ``type'' in data lakes. The Auto-Tag approach can adapt to custom data-types, and is shown to be both accurate and efficient. Part of Auto-Tag ships as a ``custom-classification'' feature in a cloud-based data governance and catalog solution \textit{Azure Purview}.

Transition metal dichalcogenide dimer nano-antennas with ultra-small gaps

Transition metal dichalcogenides have emerged as promising materials for nano-photonic resonators due to their large refractive index, low absorption within a large portion of the visible spectrum and compatibility with a wide range of substrates. Here we use these properties to fabricate WS$_2$ double-pillar nano-antennas in a variety of geometries enabled by the anisotropy in the crystal structure. Using dark field spectroscopy, we reveal multiple Mie resonances, to which we couple WSe$_2$ monolayer photoluminescence and achieve Purcell enhancement and an increased fluorescence by factors up to 240. We introduce post-fabrication atomic force microscope repositioning and rotation of dimer nano-antennas, achieving gaps as small as 10$\pm$5 nm, opening the possibility to a host of potential applications including strong Purcell enhancement of single photon emitters and optical trapping, which we study in simulations. Our findings highlight the advantages of using transition metal dichalcogenides for nano-photonics by exploring new applications enabled by their unique properties.

Transformer-based Network for RGB-D Saliency Detection

RGB-D saliency detection integrates information from both RGB images and depth maps to improve prediction of salient regions under challenging conditions. The key to RGB-D saliency detection is to fully mine and fuse information at multiple scales across the two modalities. Previous approaches tend to apply the multi-scale and multi-modal fusion separately via local operations, which fails to capture long-range dependencies. Here we propose a transformer-based network to address this issue. Our proposed architecture is composed of two modules: a transformer-based within-modality feature enhancement module (TWFEM) and a transformer-based feature fusion module (TFFM). TFFM conducts a sufficient feature fusion by integrating features from multiple scales and two modalities over all positions simultaneously. TWFEM enhances feature on each scale by selecting and integrating complementary information from other scales within the same modality before TFFM. We show that transformer is a uniform operation which presents great efficacy in both feature fusion and feature enhancement, and simplifies the model design. Extensive experimental results on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed network performs favorably against state-of-the-art RGB-D saliency detection methods.

Anti-degenerated UWB-LiDAR Localization for Automatic Road Roller in Tunnel

The automatic road roller, as a popular type of construction robot, has attracted much interest from both the industry and the research community in recent years. However, when it comes to tunnels where the degeneration issues are prone to happen, it is still a challenging problem to provide an accurate positioning result for the robot. In this paper, we aim to deal with this problem by fusing LiDAR and UWB measurements based on optimization. In the proposed localization method, the directions of non-degeneration will be constrained and the covariance of UWB reconstruction will be introduced to improve the accuracy of localization. Apart from these, a method that can extract the feature of the inner wall of tunnels to assist positioning is also presented in this paper. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, three experiments with real road roller were carried out and the results show that our method can achieve better performance than the existing methods and can be applied to automatic road roller working inside tunnels. Finally, we discuss the feasibility of deploying the system in real applications and make several recommendations.

Weakly Supervised Prototype Topic Model with Discriminative Seed Words: Modifying the Category Prior by Self-exploring Supervised Signals

Dataless text classification, i.e., a new paradigm of weakly supervised learning, refers to the task of learning with unlabeled documents and a few predefined representative words of categories, known as seed words. The recent generative dataless methods construct document-specific category priors by using seed word occurrences only, however, such category priors often contain very limited and even noisy supervised signals. To remedy this problem, in this paper we propose a novel formulation of category prior. First, for each document, we consider its label membership degree by not only counting seed word occurrences, but also using a novel prototype scheme, which captures pseudo-nearest neighboring categories. Second, for each label, we consider its frequency prior knowledge of the corpus, which is also a discriminative knowledge for classification. By incorporating the proposed category prior into the previous generative dataless method, we suggest a novel generative dataless method, namely Weakly Supervised Prototype Topic Model (WSPTM). The experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that WSPTM outperforms the existing baseline methods.

Kernel estimation of bivariate time-varying coefficient model for longitudinal data with terminal event

We propose a nonparametric bivariate time-varying coefficient model for longitudinal measurements with the occurrence of a terminal event that is subject to right censoring. The time-varying coefficients capture the longitudinal trajectories of covariate effects along with both the followup time and the residual lifetime. The proposed model extends the parametric conditional approach given terminal event time in recent literature, and thus avoids potential model misspecification. We consider a kernel smoothing method for estimating regression coefficients in our model and use cross-validation for bandwidth selection, applying undersmoothing in the final analysis to eliminate the asymptotic bias of the kernel estimator. We show that the kernel estimates are asymptotically normal under mild regularity conditions, and provide an easily computable sandwich variance estimator. We conduct extensive simulations that show desirable performance of the proposed approach, and apply the method to analyzing the medical cost data for patients with end-stage renal disease.

Incorporating NODE with Pre-trained Neural Differential Operator for Learning Dynamics

Learning dynamics governed by differential equations is crucial for predicting and controlling the systems in science and engineering. Neural Ordinary Differential Equation (NODE), a deep learning model integrated with differential equations, is popular in learning dynamics recently due to its robustness to irregular samples and its flexibility to high-dimensional input. However, the training of NODE is sensitive to the precision of the numerical solver, which makes the convergence of NODE unstable, especially for ill-conditioned dynamical systems. In this paper, to reduce the reliance on the numerical solver, we propose to enhance the supervised signal in the training of NODE. Specifically, we pre-train a neural differential operator (NDO) to output an estimation of the derivatives to serve as an additional supervised signal. The NDO is pre-trained on a class of basis functions and learns the mapping between the trajectory samples of these functions to their derivatives. To leverage both the trajectory signal and the estimated derivatives from NDO, we propose an algorithm called NDO-NODE, in which the loss function contains two terms: the fitness on the true trajectory samples and the fitness on the estimated derivatives that are outputted by the pre-trained NDO. Experiments on various kinds of dynamics show that our proposed NDO-NODE can consistently improve the forecasting accuracy with one pre-trained NDO. Especially for the stiff ODEs, we observe that NDO-NODE can capture the transitions in the dynamics more accurately compared with other regularization methods.
