Open-Set Object Detection Using Classification-free Object Proposal and Instance-level Contrastive Learning

Detecting both known and unknown objects is a fundamental skill for robot manipulation in unstructured environments. Open-set object detection (OSOD) is a promising direction to handle the problem consisting of two subtasks: objects and background separation, and open-set object classification. In this paper, we present Openset RCNN to address the challenging OSOD. To disambiguate unknown objects and background in the first subtask, we propose to use classification-free region proposal network (CF-RPN) which estimates the objectness score of each region purely using cues from object's location and shape preventing overfitting to the training categories. To identify unknown objects in the second subtask, we propose to represent them using the complementary region of known categories in a latent space which is accomplished by a prototype learning network (PLN). PLN performs instance-level contrastive learning to encode proposals to a latent space and builds a compact region centering with a prototype for each known category. Further, we note that the detection performance of unknown objects can not be unbiasedly evaluated on the situation that commonly used object detection datasets are not fully annotated. Thus, a new benchmark is introduced by reorganizing GraspNet-1billion, a robotic grasp pose detection dataset with complete annotation. Extensive experiments demonstrate the merits of our method. We finally show that our Openset RCNN can endow the robot with an open-set perception ability to support robotic rearrangement tasks in cluttered environments. Rethinking Directional Integration in Neural Radiance Fields

Recent works use the Neural radiance field (NeRF) to perform multi-view 3D reconstruction, providing a significant leap in rendering photorealistic scenes. However, despite its efficacy, NeRF exhibits limited capability of learning view-dependent effects compared to light field rendering or image-based view synthesis. To that end, we introduce a modification to the NeRF rendering equation which is as simple as a few lines of code change for any NeRF variations, while greatly improving the rendering quality of view-dependent effects. By swapping the integration operator and the direction decoder network, we only integrate the positional features along the ray and move the directional terms out of the integration, resulting in a disentanglement of the view-dependent and independent components. The modified equation is equivalent to the classical volumetric rendering in ideal cases on object surfaces with Dirac densities. Furthermore, we prove that with the errors caused by network approximation and numerical integration, our rendering equation exhibits better convergence properties with lower error accumulations compared to the classical NeRF. We also show that the modified equation can be interpreted as light field rendering with learned ray embeddings. Experiments on different NeRF variations show consistent improvements in the quality of view-dependent effects with our simple modification.

Efficient Wideband DoA Estimation with a Robust Iterative Method for Uniform Circular Arrays

Direction-of-arrival (DoA) is a critical parameter in wireless channel estimation. With the ever-increasing requirement of high data rate and ubiquitous devices in wireless communication systems, effective wideband DoA estimation is desirable. In this paper, an iterative coherent signal-subspace method including three main steps in each iteration is proposed for wideband two-dimensional (2D) DoA estimation with a uniform circular array. The first step selects partial frequency points for the subsequent focusing process. The second step performs the focusing process, where the angle intervals are designed to generate focusing matrices with robustness, and the signal-subspaces at the selected frequency points are focused into a reference frequency. The third step estimates DoAs with the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm, where the range of the MUSIC spatial spectrum is constrained by the aforementioned angle intervals. The key parameters of the proposed method in the current iteration are adjusted based on the estimation results in the previous iterations. Besides, the Cramér-Rao bound of the investigated scenario of DoA estimation is derived as a performance benchmark, based on which the guidelines for practical application are provided. The simulation results indicate the proposed method enjoys better estimation performance and preferable efficiency when compared with the benchmark methods.

Algorithms for the uniqueness of the longest common subsequence

Given several number sequences, determining the longest common subsequence is a classical problem in computer science. This problem has applications in bioinformatics, especially determining transposable genes. Nevertheless, related works only consider how to find one longest common subsequence. In this paper, we consider how to determine the uniqueness of the longest common subsequence. If there are multiple longest common subsequences, we also determine which number appears in all/some/none of the longest common subsequences. We focus on four scenarios: (1) linear sequences without duplicated numbers; (2) circular sequences without duplicated numbers; (3) linear sequences with duplicated numbers; (4) circular sequences with duplicated numbers. We develop corresponding algorithms and apply them to gene sequencing data.

Scalar induced gravitational waves in light of Pulsar Timing Array data

The power-law parametrization for the energy density spectrum of gravitational wave (GW) background is a useful tool to study its physics and origin. While scalar induced secondary gravitational waves (SIGWs) from some particular models fit the signal detected by NANOGrav, Parkers Pulsar Timing Array, European Pulsar Timing Array, and Chinese Pulsar Timing Array collaborations better than GWs from supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), we test the consistency of the data with the infrared part of SIGWs which is somewhat independent of models. Through Bayesian analysis, we show that the infrared parts of SIGWs fit the data better than GW background from SMBHBs. The results give tentative evidence for SIGWs.

C^2:Co-design of Robots via Concurrent Networks Coupling Online and Offline Reinforcement Learning

With the increasing computing power, using data-driven approaches to co-design a robot's morphology and controller has become a promising way. However, most existing data-driven methods require training the controller for each morphology to calculate fitness, which is time-consuming. In contrast, the dual-network framework utilizes data collected by individual networks under a specific morphology to train a population network that provides a surrogate function for morphology optimization. This approach replaces the traditional evaluation of a diverse set of candidates, thereby speeding up the training. Despite considerable results, the online training of both networks impedes their performance. To address this issue, we propose a concurrent network framework that combines online and offline reinforcement learning (RL) methods. By leveraging the behavior cloning term in a flexible manner, we achieve an effective combination of both networks. We conducted multiple sets of comparative experiments in the simulator and found that the proposed method effectively addresses issues present in the dual-network framework, leading to overall algorithmic performance improvement. Furthermore, we validated the algorithm on a real robot, demonstrating its feasibility in a practical application.

Augmenting Lane Perception and Topology Understanding with Standard Definition Navigation Maps

Autonomous driving has traditionally relied heavily on costly and labor-intensive High Definition (HD) maps, hindering scalability. In contrast, Standard Definition (SD) maps are more affordable and have worldwide coverage, offering a scalable alternative. In this work, we systematically explore the effect of SD maps for real-time lane-topology understanding. We propose a novel framework to integrate SD maps into online map prediction and propose a Transformer-based encoder, SD Map Encoder Representations from transFormers, to leverage priors in SD maps for the lane-topology prediction task. This enhancement consistently and significantly boosts (by up to 60%) lane detection and topology prediction on current state-of-the-art online map prediction methods without bells and whistles and can be immediately incorporated into any Transformer-based lane-topology method. Molecular tuning of DNA framework-programmed silicification by cationic silica cluster attachment

The organizational complexity of biominerals has long fascinated scientists seeking to understand biological programming and implement new developments in biomimetic materials chemistry. Nonclassical crystallization pathways have been observed and analyzed in typical crystalline biominerals, involving the controlled attachment and reconfiguration of nanoparticles and clusters on organic templates. However, the understanding of templated amorphous silica mineralization remains limited, hindering the rational design of complex silica-based materials. Here, we present a systematic study on the stabilization of self-capping cationic silica cluster (CSC) and their assembly dynamics using DNA nanostructures as programmable attachment templates. By tuning the composition and structure of CSC, we demonstrate high-fidelity silicification at single-cluster resolution, revealing a process of adaptive templating involving cooperative adjustments of both the DNA framework and cluster morphology. Our results provide a unified model of silicification by cluster attachment and pave the way towards the molecular tuning of pre- and post-nucleation stages of sol-gel reactions. Overall, our findings provide new insights for the design of silica-based materials with controlled organization and functionality, bridging the gap between biomineralization principles and the rational design of biomimetic material.

EmerNeRF: Emergent Spatial-Temporal Scene Decomposition via Self-Supervision

We present EmerNeRF, a simple yet powerful approach for learning spatial-temporal representations of dynamic driving scenes. Grounded in neural fields, EmerNeRF simultaneously captures scene geometry, appearance, motion, and semantics via self-bootstrapping. EmerNeRF hinges upon two core components: First, it stratifies scenes into static and dynamic fields. This decomposition emerges purely from self-supervision, enabling our model to learn from general, in-the-wild data sources. Second, EmerNeRF parameterizes an induced flow field from the dynamic field and uses this flow field to further aggregate multi-frame features, amplifying the rendering precision of dynamic objects. Coupling these three fields (static, dynamic, and flow) enables EmerNeRF to represent highly-dynamic scenes self-sufficiently, without relying on ground truth object annotations or pre-trained models for dynamic object segmentation or optical flow estimation. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in sensor simulation, significantly outperforming previous methods when reconstructing static (+2.93 PSNR) and dynamic (+3.70 PSNR) scenes. In addition, to bolster EmerNeRF's semantic generalization, we lift 2D visual foundation model features into 4D space-time and address a general positional bias in modern Transformers, significantly boosting 3D perception performance (e.g., 37.50% relative improvement in occupancy prediction accuracy on average). Finally, we construct a diverse and challenging 120-sequence dataset to benchmark neural fields under extreme and highly-dynamic settings.

Differentially Private Kolmogorov-Smirnov-Type Tests

Hypothesis testing is a central problem in statistical analysis, and there is currently a lack of differentially private tests which are both statistically valid and powerful. In this paper, we develop several new differentially private (DP) nonparametric hypothesis tests. Our tests are based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kuiper, Cramér-von Mises, and Wasserstein test statistics, which can all be expressed as a pseudo-metric on empirical cumulative distribution functions (ecdfs), and can be used to test hypotheses on goodness-of-fit, two samples, and paired data. We show that these test statistics have low sensitivity, requiring minimal noise to satisfy DP. In particular, we show that the sensitivity of these test statistics can be expressed in terms of the base sensitivity, which is the pseudo-metric distance between the ecdfs of adjacent databases and is easily calculated. The sampling distribution of our test statistics are distribution-free under the null hypothesis, enabling easy computation of $p$-values by Monte Carlo methods. We show that in several settings, especially with small privacy budgets or heavy-tailed data, our new DP tests outperform alternative nonparametric DP tests.

Blow-up sets of Ricci curvatures of complete conformal metrics

A version of the singular Yamabe problem in smooth domains in a closed manifold yields complete conformal metrics with negative constant scalar curvatures. In this paper, we study the blow-up phenomena of Ricci curvatures of these metrics on domains whose boundary is close to a certain limit set of a lower dimension. We will characterize the blow-up set according to the Yamabe invariant of the underlying manifold. In particular, we will prove that all points in the lower dimension part of the limit set belong to the blow-up set on manifolds not conformally equivalent to the standard sphere and that all but one point in the lower dimension part of the limit set belong to the blow-up set on manifolds conformally equivalent to the standard sphere. In certain cases, the blow-up set can be the entire manifold. We will demonstrate by examples that these results are optimal.

Cell Population Growth Kinetics in the Presence of Stochastic Heterogeneity of Cell Phenotype

Recent studies at individual cell resolution have revealed phenotypic heterogeneity in nominally clonal tumor cell populations. The heterogeneity affects cell growth behaviors, which can result in departure from the idealized uniform exponential growth of the cell population. Here we measured the stochastic time courses of growth of an ensemble of populations of HL60 leukemia cells in cultures, starting with distinct initial cell numbers to capture a departure from the {uniform exponential growth model for the initial growth (``take-off'')}. Despite being derived from the same cell clone, we observed significant variations in the early growth patterns of individual cultures with statistically significant differences in growth dynamics, which could be explained by the presence of inter-converting subpopulations with different growth rates, and which could last for many generations. Based on the hypothesis of existence of multiple subpopulations, we developed a branching process model that was consistent with the experimental observations.

G-SPEED: General SParse Efficient Editing MoDel

Large Language Models~(LLMs) have demonstrated incredible capabilities in understanding, generating, and manipulating languages. Through human-model interactions, LLMs can automatically understand human-issued instructions and output the expected contents, which can significantly increase working efficiency. In various types of real-world demands, editing-oriented tasks account for a considerable proportion, which involves an interactive process that entails the continuous refinement of existing texts to meet specific criteria. Due to the need for multi-round human-model interaction and the generation of complicated editing tasks, there is an emergent need for efficient general editing models. In this paper, we propose \underline{\textbf{G}}eneral \underline{\textbf{SP}}arse \underline{\textbf{E}}fficient \underline{\textbf{E}}diting Mo\underline{\textbf{D}}el~(\textbf{G-SPEED}), which can fulfill diverse editing requirements through a single model while maintaining low computational costs. Specifically, we first propose a novel unsupervised text editing data clustering algorithm to deal with the data scarcity problem. Subsequently, we introduce a sparse editing model architecture to mitigate the inherently limited learning capabilities of small language models. The experimental outcomes indicate that G-SPEED, with its 508M parameters, can surpass LLMs equipped with 175B parameters. A Two-stage Based Social Preference Recognition in Multi-Agent Autonomous Driving System

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) has become a promising solution for constructing a multi-agent autonomous driving system (MADS) in complex and dense scenarios. But most methods consider agents acting selfishly, which leads to conflict behaviors. Some existing works incorporate the concept of social value orientation (SVO) to promote coordination, but they lack the knowledge of other agents' SVOs, resulting in conservative maneuvers. In this paper, we aim to tackle the mentioned problem by enabling the agents to understand other agents' SVOs. To accomplish this, we propose a two-stage system framework. Firstly, we train a policy by allowing the agents to share their ground truth SVOs to establish a coordinated traffic flow. Secondly, we develop a recognition network that estimates agents' SVOs and integrates it with the policy trained in the first stage. Experiments demonstrate that our developed method significantly improves the performance of the driving policy in MADS compared to two state-of-the-art MARL algorithms.

Atomic-scale mechanism of enhanced electron-phonon coupling at the interface of MgB$_2$ thin film

In this study, we explore the heterointerface of MgB$_2$ film on SiC substrate at atomic scale using electron microscopy and spectroscopy. We detect ~1 nm MgO between MgB$_2$ and SiC. Atomic-level electron energy loss spectra (EELS) show MgB$_2$-E2g mode splitting and softening near the MgB$_2$/MgO interface. Orbital-resolved core-level EELS link the phonon softening to in-plane boron-atom electron states' changes. Ab initio calculations confirm this softening enhances electron-phonon coupling at the interface. Our findings highlight interface engineering's potential for superconductivity enhancement.

A Robust and Constrained Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Electric Vehicle Rebalancing Method in AMoD Systems

Electric vehicles (EVs) play critical roles in autonomous mobility-on-demand (AMoD) systems, but their unique charging patterns increase the model uncertainties in AMoD systems (e.g. state transition probability). Since there usually exists a mismatch between the training and test/true environments, incorporating model uncertainty into system design is of critical importance in real-world applications. However, model uncertainties have not been considered explicitly in EV AMoD system rebalancing by existing literature yet, and the coexistence of model uncertainties and constraints that the decision should satisfy makes the problem even more challenging. In this work, we design a robust and constrained multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) framework with state transition kernel uncertainty for EV AMoD systems. We then propose a robust and constrained MARL algorithm (ROCOMA) with robust natural policy gradients (RNPG) that trains a robust EV rebalancing policy to balance the supply-demand ratio and the charging utilization rate across the city under model uncertainty. Experiments show that the ROCOMA can learn an effective and robust rebalancing policy. It outperforms non-robust MARL methods in the presence of model uncertainties. It increases the system fairness by 19.6% and decreases the rebalancing costs by 75.8%.

Multiferroic Magnon Spin-Torque Based Reconfigurable Logic-In-Memory

Magnons, bosonic quasiparticles carrying angular momentum, can flow through insulators for information transmission with minimal power dissipation. However, it remains challenging to develop a magnon-based logic due to the lack of efficient electrical manipulation of magnon transport. Here we present a magnon logic-in-memory device in a spin-source/multiferroic/ferromagnet structure, where multiferroic magnon modes can be electrically excited and controlled. In this device, magnon information is encoded to ferromagnetic bits by the magnon-mediated spin torque. We show that the ferroelectric polarization can electrically modulate the magnon spin-torque by controlling the non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure in multiferroic bismuth ferrite thin films with coupled antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders. By manipulating the two coupled non-volatile state variables (ferroelectric polarization and magnetization), we further demonstrate reconfigurable logic-in-memory operations in a single device. Our findings highlight the potential of multiferroics for controlling magnon information transport and offer a pathway towards room-temperature voltage-controlled, low-power, scalable magnonics for in-memory computing.

Sparsity-Based Channel Estimation Exploiting Deep Unrolling for Downlink Massive MIMO

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) enjoys great advantage in 5G wireless communication systems owing to its spectrum and energy efficiency. However, hundreds of antennas require large volumes of pilot overhead to guarantee reliable channel estimation in FDD massive MIMO system. Compressive sensing (CS) has been applied for channel estimation by exploiting the inherent sparse structure of massive MIMO channel but suffer from high complexity. To overcome this challenge, this paper develops a hybrid channel estimation scheme by integrating the model-driven CS and data-driven deep unrolling technique. The proposed scheme consists of a coarse estimation part and a fine correction part to respectively exploit the inter- and intraframe sparsities of channels to greatly reduce the pilot overhead. Theoretical result is provided to indicate the convergence of the fine correction and coarse estimation net. Simulation results are provided to verify that our scheme can estimate MIMO channels with low pilot overhead while guaranteeing estimation accuracy with relatively low complexity.
