3-Lie algebra $A_ω^δ$-modules and induced modules

In this paper, we define the induced modules of Lie algebra ad$(B)$ associated with a 3-Lie algebra $B$-module, and study the relation between 3-Lie algebra $A_ω^δ$-modules and induced modules of inner derivation algebra ad$(A_ω^δ)$. We construct two infinite dimensional intermediate series modules of 3-Lie algebra $A_ω^δ$, and two infinite dimensional modules $(V, ψ_{λμ})$ and $(V, ϕ_μ)$ of the Lie algebra ad$(A_ω^δ)$, and prove that only $(V, ψ_{\lambda0})$ and $(V, ψ_{\lambda1})$ are induced modules.

Minimum degree of 3-graphs without long linear paths

A well known theorem in graph theory states that every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and minimum degree at least $d$ contains a path of length at least $d$, and if $G$ is connected and $n\ge 2d+1$ then $G$ contains a path of length at least $2d$ (Dirac, 1952). In this article, we give an extension of Dirac's result to hypergraphs. We determine asymptotic lower bounds of the minimum degrees of 3-graphs to guarantee linear paths of specific lengths, and the lower bounds are tight up to a constant.

Codegree conditions for tilling balanced complete $3$-partite $3$-graphs and generalized 4-cycles

Given two $k$-graphs $F$ and $H$, a perfect $F$-tiling (also called an $F$-factor) in $H$ is a set of vertex disjoint copies of $F$ that together cover the vertex set of $H$. Let $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $t$ contains a perfect $F$-tiling. Mycroft (JCTA, 2016) determined the asymptotic values of $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ for $k$-partite $k$-graphs $F$. Mycroft also conjectured that the error terms $o(n)$ in $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ can be replaced by a constant that depends only on $F$. In this paper, we improve the error term of Mycroft's result to a sub-linear term when $F=K^3(m)$, the complete $3$-partite $3$-graph with each part of size $m$. We also show that the sub-linear term is tight for $K^3(2)$, {the result also provides another family of counterexamples of Mycroft's conjecture (Gao, Han, Zhao (arXiv, 2016) gave a family of counterexamples when $H$ is a $k$-partite $k$-graph with some restrictions.)} Finally, we show that Mycroft's conjecture holds for generalized 4-cycle $C_4^3$ (the 3-graph on six vertices and four distinct edges $A, B, C, D$ with $A\cup B= C\cup D$ and $A\cap B=C\cap D=\emptyset$), i.e. we determine the exact value of $t_2(n, C_4^3)$.

The edge spectrum of $K_4^-$-saturated graphs

Given graphs $G$ and $H$, $G$ is $H$-saturated if $G$ does not contain a copy of $H$ but the addition of any edge $e\notin E(G)$ creates at least one copy of $H$ within $G$. The edge spectrum of $H$ is the set of all possible sizes of an $H$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. Let $K_4^-$ be a graph obtained from $K_4$ by deleting an edge. In this note, we show that (a) if $G$ is a $K_4^-$-saturated graph with $|V(G)|=n$ and $|E(G)|>\lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \rfloor \lceil \frac{n-1}{2} \rceil +2$, then $G$ must be a bipartite graph; (b) there exists a $K_4^-$-saturated non-bipartite graph on $n\ge 10$ vertices with size being in the interval $\left[3n-11, \left\lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \right\rfloor \left\lceil \frac{n-1}{2} \right\rceil +2\right]$. Together with a result of Fuller and Gould in [{\it On ($\hbox{K}_t-e$)-Saturated Graphs. Graphs Combin., 2018}], we determine the edge spectrum of $K_4^-$ completely, and a conjecture proposed by Fuller and Gould in the same paper also has been resolved.

The Euclidian-hyperboidal foliation method and the nonlinear stability of Minkowski spacetime

We introduce a new method for analyzing nonlinear wave-Klein-Gordon systems and establishing global-in-time existence results for the Cauchy problem when the initial data need not have compact support. This method, which we call the Euclidian-Hyperboidal Foliation Method (EHFM), relies on the construction of a spacetime foliation obtained by glueing together asymptotically Euclidian and asymptotically hyperboloidal hypersurfaces. Well-chosen frames of vector fields (null-semi-hyperboloidal, Euclidian-hyperboloidal) allow us to exhibit the structure of the equations under consideration and analyze the decay of solutions in timelike and in spacelike directions. New Sobolev inequalities for Euclidian-hyperboloidal foliations involving the Killing fields of Minkowski spacetime (but not the scaling field), as well as pointwise bounds for wave and Klein-Gordon equations on curved spacetimes are established. Our bootstrap argument involves a hierarchy of (almost sharp) energy and pointwise bounds and distinguishes between low- and high-order derivatives of the solutions. We apply this method to the Einstein equations when the matter model is a massive field and the methods by Christodolou and Klainerman and by Lindblad and Rodnianski do not apply.

Relativistic, single-cycle tunable-infrared pulses generated by a tailored plasma density structure

The availability of intense, ultrashort coherent radiation sources in the infrared region of the spectrum is enabling the generation of attosecond X-ray pulses via high harmonic generation, pump-probe experiments in the "molecular fingerprint" region and opening up the area of relativistic-infrared nonlinear optics of plasmas. These applications would benefit from multi-millijoule single-cycle pulses in the mid to long wavelength infrared (LW-IR) region. Here we present a new scheme capable of producing tunable relativistically intense, single-cycle infrared pulses from 5-14$μ$m with a 1.7% conversion efficiency based on a photon frequency downshifting scheme that uses a tailored plasma density structure. The carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the LW-IR pulse is locked to that of the drive laser to within a few percent. Such a versatile tunable IR source may meet the demands of many cutting-edge applications in strong-field physics and greatly promote their development.

A conformal-type energy inequality on hyperboloids and its application to quasi-linear wave equation in $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$

In the present work, we will develop a conformal inequality in the hyperbolic foliation context which is analogous to the conformal inequality in the classical time-constant foliation context. Then as an application, we will apply this a priori estimate to the problem of global existence of quasi-linear wave equations in three spatial dimensions under null condition. With the aid of this inequality, we can establish more precise decay estimates on the global solution.

Proposal for quantum many-body simulation and torsional matter-wave interferometry with a levitated nanodiamond

Hybrid spin-mechanical systems have great potentials in sensing, macroscopic quantum mechanics, and quantum information science. In order to induce strong coupling between an electron spin and the center-of-mass motion of a mechanical oscillator, a large magnetic gradient is usually required, which is difficult to achieve. Here we show that strong coupling between the electron spin of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center and the torsional vibration of an optically levitated nanodiamond can be achieved in a uniform magnetic field. Thanks to the uniform magnetic field, multiple spins can strongly couple to the torsional vibration at the same time. We propose to utilize this new coupling mechanism to realize the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model by an ensemble of NV centers in a levitated nanodiamond. The quantum phase transition in the LMG model and finite number effects can be observed with this system. We also propose to generate torsional superposition states and realize torsional matter-wave interferometry with spin-torsional coupling.

The global nonlinear stability of Minkowski space for self-gravitating massive fields

The theory presented in this monograph establishes the first mathematically rigorous result on the global nonlinear stability of self-gravitating matter under small perturbations of an asymptotically flat, spacelike hypersurface of Minkowski spacetime. It allows one to exclude the existence of dynamically unstable, self-gravitating massive fields and, therefore, solves a long-standing open problem in General Relativity. By a significant extension of the Hyperboloidal Foliation Method they introduced in 2014, the authors establish global-in-time existence for the Einstein equations expressed as a coupled wave-Klein-Gordon system of partial differential equations. The metric and matter fields are sought for in Sobolev-type functional spaces, suitably defined from the translations and the boosts of Minkowski spacetime.

Cooling a Mechanical Resonator to Quantum Regime by heating it

We consider a mechanical resonator made of diamond, which contains a nitrogen-vacancy center (NV center) locating at the end of the oscillator. A second order magnetic gradient is applied and inducing coupling between mechanical modes and the NV center. By applying proper external magnetic field, the energy difference between NV center electron spin levels can be tuned to match the energy difference between two mechanical modes $a$ and $b$. A laser is used for continuously initializing the NV center electron spin. The mode $a$ with lower frequency is driven by a thermal bath. We find that the temperature of the mode $b$ is significantly cooled when the heating bath temperature is increased. We discuss the conditions that quantum regime cooling requires, and confirm the results by numerical simulation. Finally we give the intuitive physical explanation on this unusual effect.

Torsional optomechanics of a levitated nonspherical nanoparticle

An optically levitated nanoparticle in vacuum is a paradigm optomechanical system for sensing and studying macroscopic quantum mechanics. While its center-of-mass motion has been investigated intensively, its torsional vibration has only been studied theoretically in limited cases. Here we report the first experimental observation of the torsional vibration of an optically levitated nonspherical nanoparticle in vacuum. We achieve this by utilizing the coupling between the spin angular momentum of photons and the torsional vibration of a nonspherical nanoparticle whose polarizability is a tensor. The torsional vibration frequency can be one order of magnitude higher than its center-of-mass motion frequency, which is promising for ground state cooling. We propose a simple yet novel scheme to achieve ground state cooling of its torsional vibration with a linearly-polarized Gaussian cavity mode. A levitated nonspherical nanoparticle in vacuum will also be an ultrasensitive nanoscale torsion balance with a torque detection sensitivity on the order of $10^{-29} ~\mathrm{N}\cdot \mathrm{m}/\sqrt{\mathrm{ Hz}}$ under realistic conditions.

The global nonlinear stability of Minkowski space for the Einstein equations in presence of a massive field

We provide a significant extension of the Hyperboloidal Foliation Method introduced by the authors in 2014 in order to establish global existence results for systems of quasilinear wave equations posed on a curved space, when wave equations and Klein-Gordon equations are coupled. This method is based on a (3+1) foliation (of the interior of a future light cone in Minkowski spacetime) by spacelike and asymptotically hyperboloidal hypersurfaces. In the new formulation of the method, we succeed to cover wave-Klein-Gordon systems containing "strong interaction" terms at the level of the metric, and then generalize our method in order to establish a new existence theory for the Einstein equations of general relativity. Following pioneering work by Lindblad and Rodnianski on the Einstein equations in wave coordinates, we establish the nonlinear stability of Minkowski spacetime for self-gravitating massive scalar fields.

One-parameter class of uncertainty relations based on entropy power

We use the concept of entropy power to derive a new one-parameter class of information-theoretic uncertainty relations for pairs of conjugate observables in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. This class constitutes an infinite tower of higher-order statistics uncertainty relations, which allows one in principle to determine the shape of the underlying information-distribution function by measuring the relevant entropy powers. We illustrate the capability of the new class by discussing two examples: superpositions of vacuum and squeezed states and the Cauchy-type heavy-tailed wave function.

Design and Performance of a Lead Fluoride Detector as a Luminosity Monitor

Precise luminosity measurements for the OLYMPUS two-photon exchange experiment at DESY were performed by counting scattering events with alternating beams of electrons and positrons incident on atomic electrons in a gaseous hydrogen target. Final products of Møller, Bhabha, and pair annihilation interactions were observed using a pair of lead fluoride Cherenkov calorimeters with custom housings and electronics, adapted from a system used by the A4 parity violation experiment at MAMI. This paper describes the design, calibration, and operation of these detectors. An explanation of the Monte Carlo methods used to simulate the physical processes involved both at the scattering vertices and in the detector apparatus is also included.

Direct Imaging of Dynamic Glassy Behavior in a Strained Manganite Film

Complex many-body interaction in perovskite manganites gives rise to a strong competition between ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered phases with nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity and glassy behaviors. Investigating this glassy state requires high resolution imaging techniques with sufficient sensitivity and stability. Here, we present the results of a near-field microwave microscope imaging on the strain driven glassy state in a manganite film. The high contrast between the two electrically distinct phases allows direct visualization of the phase separation. The low temperature microscopic configurations differ upon cooling with different thermal histories. At sufficiently high temperatures, we observe switching between the two phases in either direction. The dynamic switching, however, stops below the glass transition temperature. Compared with the magnetization data, the phase separation was microscopically frozen, while spin relaxation was found in a short period of time.

The global nonlinear stability of Minkowski space for self-gravitating massive fields. The wave-Klein-Gordon model

The Hyperboloidal Foliation Method (introduced by the authors in 2014) is extended here and applied to the Einstein equations of general relativity. Specifically, we establish the nonlinear stability of Minkowski spacetime for self-gravitating massive scalar fields, while existing methods only apply to massless scalar fields. First of all, by analyzing the structure of the Einstein equations in wave coordinates, we exhibit a nonlinear wave-Klein-Gordon model defined on a curved background, which is the focus of the present paper. For this model, we prove here the existence of global-in-time solutions to the Cauchy problem, when the initial data have sufficiently small Sobolev norms. A major difficulty comes from the fact that the class of conformal Killing fields of Minkowski space is significantly reduced in presence of a massive scalar field, since the scaling vector field is not conformal Killing for the Klein-Gordon operator. Our method relies on the foliation (of the interior of the light cone) of Minkowski spacetime by hyperboloidal hypersurfaces and uses Lorentz-invariant energy norms. We introduce a frame of vector fields adapted to the hyperboloidal foliation and we establish several key properties: Sobolev and Hardy-type inequalities on hyperboloids, as well as sup-norm estimates which correspond to the sharp time decay for the wave and the Klein-Gordon equations. These estimates allow us to control interaction terms associated with the curved geometry and the massive field, by distinguishing between two levels of regularity and energy growth and by a successive use of our key estimates in order to close a bootstrap argument.
