Learning Automata Based Q-learning for Content Placement in Cooperative Caching

An optimization problem of content placement in cooperative caching is formulated, with the aim of maximizing sum mean opinion score (MOS) of mobile users. Firstly, a supervised feed-forward back-propagation connectionist model based neural network (SFBC-NN) is invoked for user mobility and content popularity prediction. More particularly, practical data collected from GPS-tracker app on smartphones is tackled to test the accuracy of mobility prediction. Then, a learning automata-based Q-learning (LAQL) algorithm for cooperative caching is proposed, in which learning automata (LA) is invoked for Q-learning to obtain an optimal action selection in a random and stationary environment. It is proven that the LA-based action selection scheme is capable of enabling every state to select the optimal action with arbitrarily high probability if Q-learning is able to converge to the optimal Q value eventually. To characterize the performance of the proposed algorithms, the sum MOS of users is applied to define the reward function. Extensive simulations reveal that: 1) The prediction error of SFBC-NN lessen with the increase of iterations and nodes; 2) the proposed LAQL achieves significant performance improvement against traditional Q-learning; 3) the cooperative caching scheme is capable of outperforming non-cooperative caching and random caching of 3% and 4%.

Optimal Rate of Convergence for Quasi-Stochastic Approximation

The Robbins-Monro stochastic approximation algorithm is a foundation of many algorithmic frameworks for reinforcement learning (RL), and often an efficient approach to solving (or approximating the solution to) complex optimal control problems. However, in many cases practitioners are unable to apply these techniques because of an inherent high variance. This paper aims to provide a general foundation for "quasi-stochastic approximation," in which all of the processes under consideration are deterministic, much like quasi-Monte-Carlo for variance reduction in simulation. The variance reduction can be substantial, subject to tuning of pertinent parameters in the algorithm. This paper introduces a new coupling argument to establish optimal rate of convergence provided the gain is sufficiently large. These results are established for linear models, and tested also in non-ideal settings. A major application of these general results is a new class of RL algorithms for deterministic state space models. In this setting, the main contribution is a class of algorithms for approximating the value function for a given policy, using a different policy designed to introduce exploration.

A Unified Framework for Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

This paper proposes a unified framework of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. Stochastic geometry is employed to model the locations of spatially NOMA users. The proposed unified NOMA framework is capable of being applied to both code-domain NOMA (CD-NOMA) and power-domain NOMA (PD-NOMA). Since the detection of NOMA users mainly depend on efficient successive interference cancellation (SIC) schemes, both imperfect SIC (ipSIC) and perfect SIC (pSIC) are taken into account. To characterize the performance of the proposed unified NOMA framework, the exact and asymptotic expressions of outage probabilities as well as delay-limited throughput for CD/PD-NOMA with ipSIC/pSIC are derived. In order to obtain more insights, the diversity analysis of a pair of NOMA users (i.e., the $n$-th user and $m$-th user) are provided. Our analytical results reveal that: i) The diversity orders of the $m$-th and $n$-th user with pSIC for CD-NOMA are $mK$ and $nK$, respectively; ii) Due to the influence of residual interference (RI), the $n$-th user with ipSIC obtains a zero diversity order; and iii) The diversity order is determined by the user who has the poorer channel conditions out of the pair. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are presented to verify the analytical results: i) When the number of subcarriers becomes lager, the NOMA users are capable of achieving more steep slope in terms of outage probability; and ii) The outage behavior of CD-NOMA is superior to that of PD-NOMA.

Modeling and Analysis of Two-Way Relay Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

A two-way relay non-orthogonal multiple access (TWR-NOMA) system is investigated, where two groups of NOMA users exchange messages with the aid of one half-duplex (HD) decode-and-forward (DF) relay. Since the signal-plus-interference-to-noise ratios (SINRs) of NOMA signals mainly depend on effective successive interference cancellation (SIC) schemes, imperfect SIC (ipSIC) and perfect SIC (pSIC) are taken into account. In order to characterize the performance of TWR-NOMA systems, we first derive closed-form expressions for both exact and asymptotic outage probabilities of NOMA users' signals with ipSIC/pSIC. Based on the derived results, the diversity order and throughput of the system are examined. Then we study the ergodic rates of users' signals by providing the asymptotic analysis in high SNR regimes. Lastly, numerical simulations are provided to verify the analytical results and show that: 1) TWR-NOMA is superior to TWR-OMA in terms of outage probability in low SNR regimes; 2) Due to the impact of interference signal (IS) at the relay, error floors and throughput ceilings exist in outage probabilities and ergodic rates for TWR-NOMA, respectively; and 3) In delay-limited transmission mode, TWR-NOMA with ipSIC and pSIC have almost the same energy efficiency. However, in delay-tolerant transmission mode, TWR-NOMA with pSIC is capable of achieving larger energy efficiency compared to TWR-NOMA with ipSIC.

Convolution Forgetting Curve Model for Repeated Learning

Most of mathematic forgetting curve models fit well with the forgetting data under the learning condition of one time rather than repeated. In the paper, a convolution model of forgetting curve is proposed to simulate the memory process during learning. In this model, the memory ability (i.e. the central procedure in the working memory model) and learning material (i.e. the input in the working memory model) is regarded as the system function and the input function, respectively. The status of forgetting (i.e. the output in the working memory model) is regarded as output function or the convolution result of the memory ability and learning material. The model is applied to simulate the forgetting curves in different situations. The results show that the model is able to simulate the forgetting curves not only in one time learning condition but also in multi-times condition. The model is further verified in the experiments of Mandarin tone learning for Japanese learners. And the predicted curve fits well on the test points.

Efficient Reduced-Order Models for Soft Actuators

Soft robotics have gained increased attention from the robotic community due to their unique features such as compliance and human safety. Impressive amount of soft robotic prototypes have shown their superior performance over their rigid counter parts in healthcare, rehabilitation, and search and rescue applications. However, soft robots are yet to capitalize on their potential outside laboratories and this could be attributed to lack of advanced sensing capabilities and real-time dynamic models. In this pilot study, we explore the use of high-accuracy, high-bandwidth deformation sensing via fiber optic strain sensing (FOSS) in soft bending actuators (SBA). Based on the high density sensor feedback, we introduce a reduced order kinematic model. Together with cubic spline interpolation, this model is able to reconstruct the continuous deformation of SBAs. The kinematic model is extended to derive an efficient real-time equation of motion and validated against the experimental data.

Dynamic Control of Pneumatic Muscle Actuators

Pneumatic muscle actuators (PMA) are easy-to-fabricate, lightweight, compliant, and have high power-to-weight ratio, thus making them the ideal actuation choice for many soft and continuum robots. But so far, limited work has been carried out in dynamic control of PMAs. One reason is that PMAs are highly hysteretic. Coupled with their high compliance and response lag, PMAs are challenging to control, particularly when subjected to external loads. The hysteresis models proposed to-date rely on many physical and mechanical parameters that are difficult to measure reliably and therefore of limited use for implementing dynamic control. In this work, we employ a Bouc-Wen hysteresis modeling approach to account for the hysteresis of PMAs and use the model for implementing dynamic control. The controller is then compared to PID feedback control for a number of dynamic position tracking tests. The dynamic control based on the Bouc-Wen hysteresis model shows significantly better tracking performance. This work lays the foundation towards implementing dynamic control for PMA-powered high degrees of freedom soft and continuum robots.

Energy-Efficient Mobile-Edge Computation Offloading for Applications with Shared Data

Mobile-edge computation offloading (MECO) has been recognized as a promising solution to alleviate the burden of resource-limited Internet of Thing (IoT) devices by offloading computation tasks to the edge of cellular networks (also known as {\em cloudlet}). Specifically, latency-critical applications such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have inherent collaborative properties since part of the input/output data are shared by different users in proximity. In this paper, we consider a multi-user fog computing system, in which multiple single-antenna mobile users running applications featuring shared data can choose between (partially) offloading their individual tasks to a nearby single-antenna cloudlet for remote execution and performing pure local computation. The mobile users' energy minimization is formulated as a convex problem, subject to the total computing latency constraint, the total energy constraints for individual data downloading, and the computing frequency constraints for local computing, for which classical Lagrangian duality can be applied to find the optimal solution. Based upon the semi-closed form solution, the shared data proves to be transmitted by only one of the mobile users instead of multiple ones. Besides, compared to those baseline algorithms without considering the shared data property or the mobile users' local computing capabilities, the proposed joint computation offloading and communications resource allocation provides significant energy saving.

First-principles study on the chemical decomposition of inorganic perovskites \ce{CsPbI3} and \ce{RbPbI3} at finite temperature and pressure

Inorganic halide perovskite \ce{Cs(Rb)PbI3} has attracted significant research interest in the application of light-absorbing material of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Although there have been extensive studies on structural and electronic properties of inorganic halide perovskites, the investigation on their thermodynamic stability is lack. Thus, we investigate the effect of substituting Rb for Cs in \ce{CsPbI3} on the chemical decomposition and thermodynamic stability using first-principles thermodynamics. By calculating the formation energies of solid solutions \ce{Cs$_{1-x}$Rb$_x$PbI3} from their ingredients \ce{Cs$_{1-x}$Rb$_x$I} and \ce{PbI2}, we find that the best match between efficiency and stability can be achieved at the Rb content $x\approx$ 0.7. The calculated Helmholtz free energy of solid solutions indicates that \ce{Cs$_{1-x}$Rb$_x$PbI3} has a good thermodynamic stability at room temperature due to a good miscibility of \ce{CsPbI3} and \ce{RbPbI3}. Through lattice-dynamics calculations, we further highlight that \ce{RbPbI3} never stabilize in cubic phase at any temperature and pressure due to the chemical decomposition into its ingredients \ce{RbI} and \ce{PbI2}, while \ce{CsPbI3} can be stabilized in the cubic phase at the temperature range of 0$-$600 K and the pressure range of 0$-$4 GPa. Our work reasonably explains the experimental observations, and paves the way for understanding material stability of the inorganic halide perovskites and designing efficient inorganic halide PSCs.

Multiple Antenna Aided NOMA in UAV Networks: A Stochastic Geometry Approach

This article investigates the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) networks. By utilizing a stochastic geometry model, a new 3-Dimension UAV framework for providing wireless service to randomly roaming NOMA users has been proposed. In an effort to evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, we derive analytical expressions for the outage probability and the ergodic rate of MIMO-NOMA enhanced UAV networks. We examine tractable upper bounds for the whole proposed framework, with deriving asymptotic results for scenarios that transmit power of interference sources being proportional or being fixed to the UAV. For obtaining more insights for the proposed framework, we investigate the diversity order and high signal-to-noise (SNR) slope of MIMO-NOMA assisted UAV networks. Our results confirm that: i) The outage probability of NOMA enhanced UAV networks is affected to a large extent by the targeted transmission rates and power allocation factors of NOMA users; and ii) For the case that the interference power is proportional to the UAV power, there are error floors for the outage probabilities.

Critical role of water in defect aggregation and chemical degradation of perovskite solar cells

The chemical stability of methylammonium lead iodide (\ce{MAPbI3}) under humid conditions remains the primary challenge facing halide perovskite solar cells. We investigate defect processes in the water-intercalated iodide perovskite (\ce{MAPbI3}\_\ce{H2O}) and monohydrated phase (\ce{MAPbI3}$\cdot$\ce{H2O}) within a first-principles thermodynamic framework. We consider the formation energies of isolated and aggregated vacancy defects with different charge states under I-rich and I-poor conditions. It is found that a \ce{PbI2} (partial Schottky) vacancy complex can be formed readily, while the \ce{MAI} vacancy complex is difficult to form in the hydrous compounds. Vacancies in the hydrous phases create deep charge transition levels, indicating the degradation of halide perovskite upon exposure to moisture. Electronic structure analysis supports a novel mechanism of water-mediated vacancy-pair formation.

Outage Performance of A Unified Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Framework

In this paper, a unified framework of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks is proposed, which can be applied to code-domain NOMA (CD-NOMA) and power-domain NOMA (PD-NOMA). Based on the asymptotic analysis, the diversity orders of CD/PD-NOMA are provided. It is confirmed that due to the impact of residual interference (RI), the outage probability of the n-th user with ipSIC for CD/PD-NOMA converges to an error floor in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the outage behavior of CD-NOMA is superior to that of PD-NOMA.

Downgrade Attack on TrustZone

Security-critical tasks require proper isolation from untrusted software. Chip manufacturers design and include trusted execution environments (TEEs) in their processors to secure these tasks. The integrity and security of the software in the trusted environment depend on the verification process of the system. We find a form of attack that can be performed on the current implementations of the widely deployed ARM TrustZone technology. The attack exploits the fact that the trustlet (TA) or TrustZone OS loading verification procedure may use the same verification key and may lack proper rollback prevention across versions. If an exploit works on an out-of-date version, but the vulnerability is patched on the latest version, an attacker can still use the same exploit to compromise the latest system by downgrading the software to an older and exploitable version. We did experiments on popular devices on the market including those from Google, Samsung and Huawei, and found that all of them have the risk of being attacked. Also, we show a real-world example to exploit Qualcomm's QSEE. In addition, in order to find out which device images share the same verification key, pattern matching schemes for different vendors are analyzed and summarized.

Monitoring near-surface depth profile of residual stress in weakly anisotropic media by Rayleigh-wave dispersion

Herein we study the inverse problem on inferring depth profile of near-surface residual stress in a weakly anisotropic medium by boundary measurement of Rayleigh-wave dispersion if all other relevant material parameters of the elastic medium are known. Our solution of this inverse problem is based on a recently developed algorithm by which each term of a high-frequency asymptotic formula for dispersion relations can be computed for Rayleigh waves that propagate in various directions along the free surface of a vertically-inhomogeneous, prestressed, and weakly anisotropic half-space. As a prime example of possible applications we focus on a thick-plate sample of AA 7075-T651 aluminum alloy, which has one face treated by low plasticity burnishing (LPB) that induced a depth-dependent prestress at and immediately beneath the treated surface. We model the sample as a prestressed, weakly-textured orthorhombic aggregate of cubic crystallites and assume that by nondestructive and/or destructive measurements we have ascertained everything about the sample, including the LPB-induced prestress, before it is put into service. Under the supposition that the prestress be partially relaxed but other material parameters remain unchanged after the sample undergoes a period of service, we examine the possibility of inferring the depth profile of the partially relaxed stress by boundary measurement of Rayleigh-wave dispersion.

Spectral and Energy Efficiency of Uplink D2D Underlaid Massive MIMO Cellular Networks

One of key 5G scenarios is that device-to-device (D2D) and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) will be co-existed. However, interference in the uplink D2D underlaid massive MIMO cellular networks needs to be coordinated, due to the vast cellular and D2D transmissions. To this end, this paper introduces a spatially dynamic power control solution for mitigating the cellular-to-D2D and D2D-to-cellular interference. In particular, the proposed D2D power control policy is rather flexible including the special cases of no D2D links or using maximum transmit power. Under the considered power control, an analytical approach is developed to evaluate the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) in such networks. Thus, the exact expressions of SE for a cellular user or D2D transmitter are derived, which quantify the impacts of key system parameters such as massive MIMO antennas and D2D density. Moreover, the D2D scale properties are obtained, which provide the sufficient conditions for achieving the anticipated SE. Numerical results corroborate our analysis and show that the proposed power control solution can efficiently mitigate interference between the cellular and D2D tier. The results demonstrate that there exists the optimal D2D density for maximizing the area SE of D2D tier. In addition, the achievable EE of a cellular user can be comparable to that of a D2D user.

Estimation and Control of Quality of Service in Demand Dispatch

It is now well known that flexibility of energy consumption can be harnessed for the purposes of grid-level ancillary services. In particular, through distributed control of a collection of loads, a balancing authority regulation signal can be tracked accurately, while ensuring that the quality of service (QoS) for each load is acceptable {\it on average}. In this paper it is argued that a histogram of QoS is approximately Gaussian, and consequently each load will eventually receive poor service. Statistical techniques are developed to estimate the mean and variance of QoS as a function of the power spectral density of the regulation signal. It is also shown that additional local control can eliminate risk: The histogram of QoS is {\it truncated} through this local control, so that strict bounds on service quality are guaranteed. While there is a tradeoff between the grid-level tracking performance (capacity and accuracy) and the bounds imposed on QoS, it is found that the loss of capacity is minor in typical cases.
