FairLRF: Achieving Fairness through Sparse Low Rank Factorization

As deep learning (DL) techniques become integral to various applications, ensuring model fairness while maintaining high performance has become increasingly critical, particularly in sensitive fields such as medical diagnosis. Although a variety of bias-mitigation methods have been proposed, many rely on computationally expensive debiasing strategies or suffer substantial drops in model accuracy, which limits their practicality in real-world, resource-constrained settings. To address this issue, we propose a fairness-oriented low rank factorization (LRF) framework that leverages singular value decomposition (SVD) to improve DL model fairness. Unlike traditional SVD, which is mainly used for model compression by decomposing and reducing weight matrices, our work shows that SVD can also serve as an effective tool for fairness enhancement. Specifically, we observed that elements in the unitary matrices obtained from SVD contribute unequally to model bias across groups defined by sensitive attributes. Motivated by this observation, we propose a method, named FairLRF, that selectively removes bias-inducing elements from unitary matrices to reduce group disparities, thus enhancing model fairness. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms conventional LRF methods as well as state-of-the-art fairness-enhancing techniques in terms of improving fairness while maintaining accuracy. Additionally, an ablation study examines how major hyper-parameters may influence the performance of processed models. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work utilizing SVD not primarily for compression but for fairness enhancement of DL classifications.

FairCompressAgent: An Agentic Framework for Fairness-Aware Model Compression for FPGA Deployment

Fairness-aware model compression requires selecting methods and configurations that balance accuracy, fairness, and deployment cost. These decisions become more difficult when compression methods are composed or the user's requirements change. In this paper, we propose FairCompressAgent (FCA), an agentic framework that integrates fairness-aware pruning, incremental quantization, and sparse low-rank factorization through a common operator interface. A language-model planner uses model profiles and measured outcomes to select compression configurations, while an execution layer performs compression, fine-tuning, evaluation, and constraint-based selection. FCA also supports requirement updates and reports the remaining violation when a request cannot be satisfied. Experiments on Fitzpatrick-17k with VGG-11 compare four search methods over 40 measured configurations. Under the accuracy-constrained request, FCA selects a compressed model with 59.54% less inference tensor storage, while validation average precision increases from 0.5141 to 0.5233 and equalized opportunity (EOpp) decreases from 0.2251 to 0.2168. It reaches the same final selection as one-shot planning with 7.33 versus 12 candidate evaluations on average, under their respective stopping policies. Repeated fine-tuning, held-out testing, and online requirement updates characterize the stability and interactive use of this compression workflow. The results demonstrate how measured feedback and explicit constraints support the selection and interactive refinement of fairness-aware compression configurations.

CNN-Cap: Effective Convolutional Neural Network Based Capacitance Models for Full-Chip Parasitic Extraction

Accurate capacitance extraction is becoming more important for designing integrated circuits under advanced process technology. The pattern matching based full-chip extraction methodology delivers fast computational speed, but suffers from large error, and tedious efforts on building capacitance models of the increasing structure patterns. In this work, we propose an effective method for building convolutional neural network (CNN) based capacitance models (called CNN-Cap) for two-dimensional (2-D) structures in full-chip capacitance extraction. With a novel grid-based data representation, the proposed method is able to model the pattern with a variable number of conductors, so that largely reduce the number of patterns. Based on the ability of ResNet architecture on capturing spatial information and the proposed training skills, the obtained CNN-Cap exhibits much better performance over the multilayer perception neural network based capacitance model while being more versatile. Extensive experiments on a 55nm and a 15nm process technologies have demonstrated that the error of total capacitance produced with CNN-Cap is always within 1.3% and the error of produced coupling capacitance is less than 10% in over 99.5% probability. CNN-Cap runs more than 4000X faster than 2-D field solver on a GPU server, while it consumes negligible memory compared to the look-up table based capacitance model.
