Space-time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for advection-diffusion on deforming domains: The advection-dominated regime

We analyze a space-time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the time-dependent advection-diffusion equation on deforming domains. We prove stability of the discretization in the advection-dominated regime by using weighted test functions and derive a priori space-time error estimates. A numerical example illustrates the theoretical results.

Controllable Multi-Objective Re-ranking with Policy Hypernetworks

Multi-stage ranking pipelines have become widely used strategies in modern recommender systems, where the final stage aims to return a ranked list of items that balances a number of requirements such as user preference, diversity, novelty etc. Linear scalarization is arguably the most widely used technique to merge multiple requirements into one optimization objective, by summing up the requirements with certain preference weights. Existing final-stage ranking methods often adopt a static model where the preference weights are determined during offline training and kept unchanged during online serving. Whenever a modification of the preference weights is needed, the model has to be re-trained, which is time and resources inefficient. Meanwhile, the most appropriate weights may vary greatly for different groups of targeting users or at different time periods (e.g., during holiday promotions). In this paper, we propose a framework called controllable multi-objective re-ranking (CMR) which incorporates a hypernetwork to generate parameters for a re-ranking model according to different preference weights. In this way, CMR is enabled to adapt the preference weights according to the environment changes in an online manner, without retraining the models. Moreover, we classify practical business-oriented tasks into four main categories and seamlessly incorporate them in a new proposed re-ranking model based on an Actor-Evaluator framework, which serves as a reliable real-world testbed for CMR. Offline experiments based on the dataset collected from Taobao App showed that CMR improved several popular re-ranking models by using them as underlying models. Online A/B tests also demonstrated the effectiveness and trustworthiness of CMR.

Razor SNN: Efficient Spiking Neural Network with Temporal Embeddings

The event streams generated by dynamic vision sensors (DVS) are sparse and non-uniform in the spatial domain, while still dense and redundant in the temporal domain. Although spiking neural network (SNN), the event-driven neuromorphic model, has the potential to extract spatio-temporal features from the event streams, it is not effective and efficient. Based on the above, we propose an events sparsification spiking framework dubbed as Razor SNN, pruning pointless event frames progressively. Concretely, we extend the dynamic mechanism based on the global temporal embeddings, reconstruct the features, and emphasize the events effect adaptively at the training stage. During the inference stage, eliminate fruitless frames hierarchically according to a binary mask generated by the trained temporal embeddings. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our Razor SNN achieves competitive performance consistently on four events-based benchmarks: DVS 128 Gesture, N-Caltech 101, CIFAR10-DVS and SHD.

Multi-Competitive Virus Spread over a Time-Varying Networked SIS Model with an Infrastructure Network

We study the spread of multi-competitive viruses over a (possibly) time-varying network of individuals accounting for the presence of shared infrastructure networks that further enables transmission of the virus. We establish a sufficient condition for exponentially fast eradication of a virus for: 1) time-invariant graphs, 2) time-varying graphs with symmetric interactions between individuals and homogeneous virus spread across the network (same healing and infection rate for all individuals), and 3) directed and slowly varying graphs with heterogeneous virus spread (not necessarily same healing and infection rates for all individuals) across the network. Numerical examples illustrate our theoretical results and indicate that, for the time-varying case, violation of the aforementioned sufficient conditions could lead to the persistence of a virus.

Network-based Statistics Distinguish Anomic and Broca Aphasia

Aphasia is a speech-language impairment commonly caused by damage to the left hemisphere. Due to the complexity of speech-language processing, the neural mechanisms that underpin various symptoms between different types of aphasia are still not fully understood. We used the network-based statistic method to identify distinct subnetwork(s) of connections differentiating the resting-state functional networks of the anomic and Broca groups. We identified one such subnetwork that mainly involved the brain regions in the premotor, primary motor, primary auditory, and primary sensory cortices in both hemispheres. The majority of connections in the subnetwork were weaker in the Broca group than the anomic group. The network properties of the subnetwork were examined through complex network measures, which indicated that the regions in the superior temporal gyrus and auditory cortex bilaterally exhibit intensive interaction, and primary motor, premotor and primary sensory cortices in the left hemisphere play an important role in information flow and overall communication efficiency. These findings underlied articulatory difficulties and reduced repetition performance in Broca aphasia, which are rarely observed in anomic aphasia. This research provides novel findings into the resting-state brain network differences between groups of individuals with anomic and Broca aphasia. We identified a subnetwork of, rather than isolated, connections that statistically differentiate the resting-state brain networks of the two groups, in comparison with standard lesion symptom mapping results that yield isolated connections.

Intrinsic Magnetic Topological Materials

Topological states of matter possess bulk electronic structures categorized by topological invariants and edge/surface states due to the bulk-boundary correspondence. Topological materials hold great potential in the development of dissipationless spintronics, information storage, and quantum computation, particularly if combined with magnetic order intrinsically or extrinsically. Here, we review the recent progress in the exploration of intrinsic magnetic topological materials, including but not limited to magnetic topological insulators, magnetic topological metals, and magnetic Weyl semimetals. We pay special attention to their characteristic band features such as the gap of topological surface state, gapped Dirac cone induced by magnetization (either bulk or surface), Weyl nodal point/line, and Fermi arc, as well as the exotic transport responses resulting from such band features. We conclude with a brief envision for experimental explorations of new physics or effects by incorporating other orders in intrinsic magnetic topological materials.

Enhanced coupling between ballistic exciton-polariton condensates through tailored pumping

We propose a method to enhance the spatial coupling between ballistic exciton-polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity based on available spatial light modulator technologies. Our method, verified by numerically solving a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii model, exploits the strong nonequilibrium nature of exciton-polariton condensation driven by localized nonresonant optical excitation. Tailoring the excitation beam profile from a Gaussian into a polygonal shape results in refracted and focused radial streams of outflowing polaritons from the excited condensate which can be directed towards nearest neighbors. Our method can be used to lower the threshold power needed to achieve polariton condensation and increase spatial coherence in extended systems, paving the way towards creating extremely large-scale quantum fluids of light.

Shock-induced stripping of satellite ISM/CGM in IllustrisTNG clusters at $z\sim0$

Using the IllustrisTNG simulation, we study the interaction of large-scale shocks with the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming (SF) satellite galaxies in galaxy clusters. These shocks are usually produced by mergers and massive accretion. Our visual inspection shows that approximately half of SF satellites have encountered shocks in their host clusters at $z\leq0.11$. After a satellite crosses a shock front and enters the postshock region, the ram pressure on it is boosted significantly. Both the CGM and ISM can be severely impacted, either by striping or compression. The stripping of the ISM is particularly important for low-mass galaxies with $\log (M_{*}/M_{\odot})<10$ and can occur even in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. In comparison, satellites that do not interact with shocks lose their ISM only in the inner regions of clusters. About half of the ISM is stripped within about 0.6 Gyr after it crosses the shock front. Our results show that shock-induced stripping plays an important role in quenching satellite galaxies in clusters.

Realization of Practical Eightfold Fermions and Fourfold van Hove Singularity in TaCo$_2$Te$_2$

Space groups describing the symmetry of lattice structure allow the emergence of fermionic quasiparticles with various degeneracy in the band structure. Theoretical efforts have predicted many materials hosting fermions with the highest degeneracy, i.e., eightfold fermions, yet lacking experimental realization. Here, we explore the band degeneracies in TaCo$_2$Te$_2$ crystals. Through systematic experimental and theoretical analyses, we establish TaCo$_2$Te$_2$ as a nonsymmorphic crystal with negligible spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and long-range magnetic order. These critical properties guarantee the first realization of practical eightfold fermions and fourfold van Hove singularity, as directly observed by photoemission spectroscopy. TaCo$_2$Te$_2$ serves as a topological quantum critical platform, which can be tuned into various magnetic, topologically trivial, and nontrivial phases by adding strain, magnetic field, or SOC. The latter is demonstrated by our first-principles calculations, which show that enhancing SOC in TaCo$_2$Te$_2$ will promote the experimental observation of bulk hourglass fermions. Our results establish TaCo$_2$Te$_2$ as a unique platform to explore states of matter intertwining magnetism, correlation, symmetry, and band topology.

5G PRS-Based Sensing: A Sensing Reference Signal Approach for Joint Sensing and Communication System

The emerging joint sensing and communication (JSC) technology is expected to support new applications and services, such as autonomous driving and extended reality (XR), in the future wireless communication systems. Pilot (or reference) signals in wireless communications usually have good passive detection performance, strong anti-noise capability and good auto-correlation characteristics, hence they bear the potential for applying in radar sensing. In this paper, we investigate how to apply the positioning reference signal (PRS) of the 5th generation (5G) mobile communications in radar sensing. This approach has the unique benefit of compatibility with the most advanced mobile communication system available so far. Thus, the PRS can be regarded as a sensing reference signal to simultaneously realize the functions of radar sensing, communication and positioning in a convenient manner. Firstly, we propose a PRS based radar sensing scheme and analyze its range and velocity estimation performance, based on which we propose a method that improves the accuracy of velocity estimation by using multiple frames. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the range and velocity estimation for PRS based radar sensing and the CRLB of the range estimation for PRS based positioning are derived. Our analysis and simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of PRS over other pilot signals in radar sensing. Finally, some suggestions for the future 5G-Advanced and 6th generation (6G) frame structure design containing the sensing reference signal are derived based on our study.

Exploring Dual Encoder Architectures for Question Answering

Dual encoders have been used for question-answering (QA) and information retrieval (IR) tasks with good results. Previous research focuses on two major types of dual encoders, Siamese Dual Encoder (SDE), with parameters shared across two encoders, and Asymmetric Dual Encoder (ADE), with two distinctly parameterized encoders. In this work, we explore different ways in which the dual encoder can be structured, and evaluate how these differences can affect their efficacy in terms of QA retrieval tasks. By evaluating on MS MARCO, open domain NQ and the MultiReQA benchmarks, we show that SDE performs significantly better than ADE. We further propose three different improved versions of ADEs by sharing or freezing parts of the architectures between two encoder towers. We find that sharing parameters in projection layers would enable ADEs to perform competitively with or outperform SDEs. We further explore and explain why parameter sharing in projection layer significantly improves the efficacy of the dual encoders, by directly probing the embedding spaces of the two encoder towers with t-SNE algorithm.

On the topological surface states of the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator Mn-Bi-Te family

We review recent progress in the electronic structure study of intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ ($n=0,1,2,3$) family. Specifically, we focus on the ubiquitously (nearly) gapless behavior of the topological surface state Dirac cone observed by photoemission spectroscopy, even though a large Dirac gap is expected because of surface ferromagnetic order. The dichotomy between experiment and theory concerning this gap behavior is perhaps the most critical and puzzling question in this frontier. We discuss various proposals accounting for the lack of magnetic effect on the topological surface state Dirac cone, which are mainly categorized into two pictures, magnetic reconfiguration, and topological surface state redistribution. Band engineering towards opening a magnetic gap of topological surface states provides great opportunities to realize quantized topological transport and axion electrodynamics at higher temperatures.

Map-Assisted Constellation Design for mmWave WDM with OAM in Short-Range LOS Environment

We consider a system that integrates positioning and single-user millimeter wave (mmWave) communication, where the communication part adopts wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM). This paper addresses the multi-dimensional constellation design in shortrange line-of-sight (LOS) environment, with stable communication links. We propose a map-assisted method to quantify the system parameters based on positions and reduce real-time computing overhead. We explore the possibility of using a few patterns in the maps, and investigate its performance loss. We first investigate the features of OAM beams, and find that the link gain ratio between any two sub-channels remains unchanged at some postions. Then, we prove that a fixed constellation can be adopted for the positions where the link gain matrices are sufficiently close to be proportional. Moreover, we prove that the system can adopt a fixed power vector to generate a multidimensional constellation if the difference between fixed power vector and optimal power vector is small. Finally, we figure out that the constellation design for all receiver locations can be represented by a few constellation sets.

A State Feedback Controller for Mitigation of Continuous-Time Networked SIS Epidemics

The paper considers continuous-time networked susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) diseases spreading over a population. Each agent represents a sub-population and has its own healing rate and infection rate; the state of the agent at a time instant denotes what fraction of the said sub-population is infected with the disease at the said time instant. By taking account of the changes in behaviors of the agents in response to the infection rates in real-time, our goal is to devise a feedback strategy such that the infection level for each agent strictly stays below a pre-specified value. Furthermore, we are also interested in ensuring that the closed-loop system converges either to the disease-free equilibrium or, when it exists, to the endemic equilibrium. The upshot of devising such a strategy is that it allows health administration officials to ensure that there is sufficient capacity in the healthcare system to treat the most severe cases. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our controller via numerical examples.

Remarks on Different Notions on Output Stability for Nonlinear Delay Systems

Motivated by the regulator theory and adaptive controls, several notions on output stability in the framework of input-to-state stability (iss) were introduced for finite-dimensional systems. It turned out that these output stability notions are intrinsically different, reflecting different manners of how state variables may affect the transient behavior of output variables. In this work, we consider these output stability properties for delay systems. Our main objective is to illustrate how the various notions are related for delay systems and to provide the Razumikhin criteria for the output stability properties. The main results are also critical in developing the converse Lyapunov theorems of the output stability properties for delay systems

A Sample-Based Algorithm for Approximately Testing $r$-Robustness of a Digraph

One of the intensely studied concepts of network robustness is $r$-robustness, which is a network topology property quantified by an integer $r$. It is required by mean subsequence reduced (MSR) algorithms and their variants to achieve resilient consensus. However, determining $r$-robustness is intractable for large networks. In this paper, we propose a sample-based algorithm to approximately test $r$-robustness of a digraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. For a digraph with a moderate assumption on the minimum in-degree, and an error parameter $0<ε\leq 1$, the proposed algorithm distinguishes $(r+εn)$-robust graphs from graphs which are not $r$-robust with probability $(1-δ)$. Our algorithm runs in $\exp(O((\ln{\frac{1}{εδ}})/ε^2))\cdot m$ time. The running time is linear in the number of edges if $ε$ is a constant.

Cluster Detection Capabilities of the Average Nearest Neighbor Ratio and Ripley's K Function on Areal Data: an Empirical Assessment

Spatial clustering detection methods are widely used in many fields including epidemiology, ecology, biology, physics, and sociology. In these fields, areal data is often of interest; such data may result from spatial aggregation (e.g. the number disease cases in a county) or may be inherent attributes of the areal unit as a whole (e.g. the habitat suitability of conserved land parcel). This study aims to assess the performance of two spatial clustering detection methods on areal data: the average nearest neighbor (ANN) ratio and Ripley's K function. These methods are designed for point process data, but their ease of implementation in GIS software (e.g., in ESRI ArcGIS) and the lack of analogous methods for areal data have contributed to their use for areal data. Despite the popularity of applying these methods to areal data, little research has explored their properties in the areal data context. In this paper we conduct a simulation study to evaluate the performance of each method for areal data under various areal structures and types of spatial dependence. These studies find that traditional approach to hypothesis testing using the ANN ratio or Ripley's K function results in inflated empirical type I rates when applied to areal data. We demonstrate that this issue can be remedied for both approaches by using Monte Carlo methods which acknowledge the areal nature of the data to estimate the distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis. While such an approach is not currently implemented in ArcGIS, it can be easily done in R using code provided by the authors.

The Spin of New Black Hole Candidate: MAXI J1803-298 Observed by NuSTAR and NICER

MAXI J1803-298, a newly-discovered Galactic transient and black hole candidate, was first detected by \emph{MAXI}/GSC on May 1st, 2021. In this paper, we present a detailed spectral analysis of MAXI J1803-298. Utilizing the X-ray reflection fitting method, we perform a joint fit to the spectra of MAXI J1803-298, respectively, observed by \emph{NuSTAR} and \emph{NICER}/XTI on the same day over the energy range between 0.7-79.0 keV, and found its spin (and the inclination angle i) can be constrained to be close to an extreme value, 0.991 ($i\sim$ $70 ^{\circ}$), at 68\% confidence interval. The results suggest that MAXI J1803-298 may be a fast-rotating black hole with a large inclination angle.
