Finding binary active galactic nuclei by the centroid shift in imaging surveys

The census of binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is important in order to understand the merging history of galaxies and the triggering of AGNs. However, there is still no efficient method for selecting the candidates of binary AGNs. The non-synchronous variations of the two AGNs in one binary system will induce the shift of the image centroid. Since the astrometric error is normally much smaller than the angular resolution of telescopes, it is possible to detect such shifts even in the unresolved system via multi-epoch observations. We perform some simulations and find that hundreds of observations are required to discover compact binary AGNs. This method is suitable for the future large-scale surveys, e.g., the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, and it might lead to a large sample of binary AGNs with a 1-2 yr survey.

Information and Energy Cooperation in OFDM Relaying: Protocols and Optimization

Integrating power transfer into wireless communications for supporting simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is a promising technique in energy-constrained wireless networks. While most existing work on SWIPT focuses on capacity-energy characterization, the benefits of cooperative transmission for SWIPT are much less investigated. In this paper, we consider SWIPT in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) relaying system, where a source node transfers information and a fraction of power simultaneously to a relay node, and the relay node uses the harvested power from the source node to forward the source information to the destination. To support the simultaneous information and energy cooperation, we first propose a transmission protocol assuming that the direct link between the source and destination does not exist, namely power splitting (PS) relaying protocol, where the relay node splits the received signal power in the first hop into two separate parts, one for information decoding and the other for energy harvesting. Then, we consider the case that the direct link between the source and destination is available, and the transmission mode adaptation (TMA) protocol is proposed, where the transmission can be completed by cooperative mode and direct mode simultaneously (over different subcarriers). In direct mode, when the source transmits signal to the destination, the destination receives the signal as information and the relay node concurrently receives the signal for energy harvesting. Joint resource allocation problems are formulated to maximize the system throughput. By using the Lagrangian dual method, we develop efficient algorithms to solve the nonconvex optimization problems.

Joint Power Splitting and Secure Beamforming Design in the Wireless-powered Untrusted Relay Networks

In this work, we maximize the secrecy rate of the wireless-powered untrusted relay network by jointly designing power splitting (PS) ratio and relay beamforming with the proposed global optimal algorithm (GOA) and local optimal algorithm (LOA). Different from the literature, artificial noise (AN) sent by the destination not only degrades the channel condition of the eavesdropper to improve the secrecy rate, but also becomes a new source of energy powering the untrusted relay based on PS. Hence, it is of high economic benefits and efficiency to take advantage of AN compared with the literature. Simulation results show that LOA can achieve satisfactory secrecy rate performance compared with that of GOA, but with less computation time.

Gaussian integrability of distance function under the Lyapunov condition

In this note we give a direct proof of the Gaussian integrability of distance function as $μe^{δd^2(x,x_0)} < \infty$ for some $δ>0$ provided the Lyapunov condition holds for symmetric diffusion Markov operators, which answers a question proposed in Cattiaux-Guillin-Wu [6, Page 295]. The similar argument still works for diffusions processes with unbounded diffusion coefficients and for jump processes such as birth-death chains. An analogous discussion is also made under the Gozlan's condition arising from [9, Proposition 3.5].

Intranight optical variability of radio-quiet BL Lacertae objects

Aims: Intranight variation (or microvariation) is a common phenomenon of radio-loud BL Lac objects. However, it is not clear whether the recently found radio-quiet BL Lac objects have the same properties. The occurrence rate of intranight variation is helpful in distinguishing the mechanism of the continuum of radio-quiet BL Lac objects. Methods: We conducted a photometric monitoring of 8 radio-quiet BL Lac objects by the Xinglong 2.16m and Lijiang 2.4m telescopes. The differential light curves are calculated between each target and two comparison stars. To quantify the variation, the significance of variation is examined by a scaled $F$-test. Results: No significant variation is found in the 11 sessions of light curves of 8 radio-quiet BL Lac objects (one galactic source is excluded). The lack of microvariation in radio-quiet BL Lac objects is consistent with the detection rate of microvariation in normal radio-quiet AGNs, but much lower than for radio-loud AGNs. This result indicates that the continua of the radio-quiet BL Lac objects are not dominated by jets that will induce frequent microvariations.

Positivity-Preserving Finite Difference WENO Schemes with Constrained Transport for Ideal Magnetohydrodynamic Equations

In this paper, we utilize the maximum-principle-preserving flux limiting technique, originally designed for high order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) methods for scalar hyperbolic conservation laws, to develop a class of high order positivity-preserving finite difference WENO methods for the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. Our schemes, under the constrained transport (CT) framework, can achieve high order accuracy, a discrete divergence-free condition and positivity of the numerical solution simultaneously. Numerical examples in 1D, 2D and 3D are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

A direct comparison of X-ray spectral models for tori in active galactic nuclei

Several X-ray spectral models for tori in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are available to constrain the properties of tori; however, the accuracy of these models has not been verified. We recently construct a code for the torus using Geant4, which can easily handle different geometries (Liu & Li 2014). Thus, we adopt the same assumptions as Murphy & Yaqoob (2009, hereafter MY09) and Brightman & Nandra (2011, hereafter BN11) and try to reproduce their spectra. As a result, we can reproduce well the reflection spectra and the strength of the Fe K$α$ line of MY09, for both $\NH=10^{24}$ and $10^{25}$ cm$^{-2}$. However, we cannot produce the strong reflection component of BN11 in the low-energy band. The origin of this component is the reflection from the visible inner wall of the torus, and it should be very weak in the edge-on directions under the geometry of BN11. Therefore, the behaviour of the reflection spectra in BN11 is not consistent with their geometry. The strength of the Fe K$α$ line of BN11 is also different from our results and the analytical result in the optically thin case. The limitation of the spectral model will bias the parameters from X-ray spectral fitting.

Towards barrier free contact to MoS2 using graphene electrodes

The two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors such as MoS2 have attracted tremendous interest as a new class of electronic materials. However, there is considerable challenge in making reliable contacts to these atomically thin materials. Here we present a new strategy by using graphene as back electrodes to achieve Ohmic contact to MoS2. With a finite density of states, the Fermi level of graphene can be readily modified by gate potential to ensure a nearly perfect band alignment with MoS2. We demonstrate, for the first time, a transparent contact can be made to MoS2 with essentially zero contact barrier and linear output behaviour at cryogenic temperatures (down to 1.9 K) for both monolayer and multilayer MoS2. Benefiting from the barrier-free transparent contacts, we show that a metal-insulator-transition (MIT) can be observed in a two-terminal MoS2 device, a phenomenon that could be easily masked by Schottky barrier and only seen in four-terminal devices in conventional metal-contacted MoS2 system. With further passivation y born nitride encapsulation, we demonstrate a record high extrinsic (two-terminal) field effect mobility over 1300 cm2/Vs in MoS2.

Electroluminescence and photocurrent generation from atomically sharp WSe2/MoS2 heterojunction p-n diodes

The p-n diodes represent the most fundamental device building block for diverse optoelectronic functions, but are difficult to achieve in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) due to the inability to selectively dope them into p- or n-type semiconductors. Here we report the first demonstration of an atomically thin and atomically sharp heterojunction p-n diode by vertically stacking p-type monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe2) and n-type few-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Electrical measurement demonstrates excellent diode characteristics with well-defined current rectification behaviour and an ideality factor of 1.2. Photocurrent mapping shows fast photoresponse over the entire overlapping region with a highest external quantum efficiency up to 12 %. Electroluminescence studies show prominent band edge excitonic emission and strikingly enhanced hot electron luminescence. A systematic investigation shows distinct layer-number dependent emission characteristics and reveals important insight about the origin of hot-electron luminescence and the nature of electron-orbital interaction in TMDs. We believe that these atomically thin heterojunction p-n diodes represent an interesting system for probing the fundamental electro-optical properties in TMDs, and can open up a new pathway to novel optoelectronic devices such as atomically thin photodetectors, photovoltaics, as well as spin-/valley-polarized light emitting diodes and on-chip lasers.

Energy Harvesting for Secure OFDMA Systems

Energy harvesting and physical-layer security in wireless networks are of great significance. In this paper, we study the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in downlink orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, where each user applies power splitting to coordinate the energy harvesting and information decoding processes while secrecy information requirement is guaranteed. The problem is formulated to maximize the aggregate harvested power at the users while satisfying secrecy rate requirements of all users by subcarrier allocation and the optimal power splitting ratio selection. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm. The numerical results show that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods.

Joint Resource Allocation for eICIC in Heterogeneous Networks

Interference coordination between high-power macros and low-power picos deeply impacts the performance of heterogeneous networks (HetNets). It should deal with three challenges: user association with macros and picos, the amount of almost blank subframe (ABS) that macros should reserve for picos, and resource block (RB) allocation strategy in each eNB. We formulate the three issues jointly for sum weighted logarithmic utility maximization while maintaining proportional fairness of users. A class of distributed algorithms are developed to solve the joint optimization problem. Our framework can be deployed for enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (eICIC) in existing LTE-A protocols. Extensive evaluation are performed to verify the effectiveness of our algorithms.

High order operator splitting methods based on an integral deferred correction framework

Integral deferred correction (IDC) methods have been shown to be an efficient way to achieve arbitrary high order accuracy and possess good stability properties. In this paper, we construct high order operator splitting schemes using the IDC procedure to solve initial value problems (IVPs). We present analysis to show that the IDC methods can correct for both the splitting and numerical errors, lifting the order of accuracy by $r$ with each correction, where $r$ is the order of accuracy of the method used to solve the correction equation. We further apply this framework to solve partial differential equations (PDEs). Numerical examples in two dimensions of linear and nonlinear initial-boundary value problems are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed IDC approach.

An X-ray spectral model for clumpy tori in active galactic nuclei

We construct an X-ray spectral model for the clumpy torus in an active galactic nucleus (AGN) using Geant4, which includes the physical processes of the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, Rayleigh scattering, $γ$ conversion, fluorescence line, and Auger process. Since the electrons in the torus are expected to be bounded instead of free, the deviation of the scattering cross section from the Klein-Nishina cross section has also been included, which changes the X-ray spectra by up to 25% below $10$ keV. We have investigated the effect of the clumpiness parameters on the reflection spectra and the strength of the fluorescent line Fe K$α$. The volume filling factor of the clouds in the clumpy torus only slightly influences the reflection spectra, however, the total column density and the number of clouds along the line of sight significantly change the shapes and amplitudes of the reflection spectra. The effect of column density is similar to the case of a smooth torus, while a small number of clouds along the line of sight will smooth out the anisotropy of the reflection spectra and the fluorescent line Fe K$α$. The smoothing effect is mild in the low column density case ($\NH=10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$), whereas it is much more evident in the high column density case ($\NH=10^{25}$ cm$^{-2}$). Our model provides a quantitative tool for the spectral analysis of the clumpy torus. We suggest that the joint fits of the broad band spectral energy distributions of AGNs (from X-ray to infrared) should better constrain the structure of the torus.

To understand the X-ray spectrum of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters

Hard X-rays above 10 keV are detected from several anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), and different models have been proposed to explain the physical origin within the frame of either magnetar model or fallback disk system. Using data from $\it Suzaku$ and INTEGRAL, we study the soft and hard X-ray spectra of four AXPs/SGRs, 1RXS J170849-400910, 1E 1547.0-5408, SGR 1806-20 and SGR 0501+4516. It is found that the spectra could be well reproduced by bulk-motion Comptonization (BMC) process as was first suggested by Tr$ü$mper et al., showing that the accretion scenario could be compatible with X-ray emission of AXPs/SGRs. HXMT simulations for BMC model show that the spectra would have discrepancies from power-law, especially the cutoff at $\sim$ 200 keV. Thus future observations are promising to distinguish different models for the hard tail and may help us understand the nature of AXPs/SGRs.

Secure Beamforming for MIMO Two-Way Communications with an Untrusted Relay

This paper studies the secure beamforming design in a multiple-antenna three-node system where two source nodes exchange messages with the help of an untrusted relay node. The relay acts as both an essential signal forwarder and a potential eavesdropper. Both two-phase and three-phase two-way relay strategies are considered. Our goal is to jointly optimize the source and relay beamformers for maximizing the secrecy sum rate of the two-way communications. We first derive the optimal relay beamformer structures. Then, iterative algorithms are proposed to find source and relay beamformers jointly based on alternating optimization. Furthermore, we conduct asymptotic analysis on the maximum secrecy sum-rate. Our analysis shows that when all transmit powers approach infinity, the two-phase two-way relay scheme achieves the maximum secrecy sum rate if the source beamformers are designed such that the received signals at the relay align in the same direction. This reveals an important advantage of signal alignment technique in against eavesdropping. It is also shown that if the source powers approach zero the three-phase scheme performs the best while the two-phase scheme is even worse than direct transmission. Simulation results have verified the efficiency of the secure beamforming algorithms as well as the analytical findings.

Glasgow's Stereo Image Database of Garments

To provide insight into cloth perception and manipulation with an active binocular robotic vision system, we compiled a database of 80 stereo-pair colour images with corresponding horizontal and vertical disparity maps and mask annotations, for 3D garment point cloud rendering has been created and released. The stereo-image garment database is part of research conducted under the EU-FP7 Clothes Perception and Manipulation (CloPeMa) project and belongs to a wider database collection released through CloPeMa (www.clopema.eu). This database is based on 16 different off-the-shelve garments. Each garment has been imaged in five different pose configurations on the project's binocular robot head. Test of conformal gravity with astrophysical observations

Since it can describe the rotation curves of galaxies without dark matter and can give rise to accelerated expansion, conformal gravity attracts much attention recently. As a theory of modified gravity, it is important to test conformal gravity with astrophysical observations. Here we constrain conformal gravity with SNIa and Hubble parameter data and investigate whether it suffers from an age problem with the age of APM~08279+5255. We find conformal gravity can accommodate the age of APM~08279+5255 at 3 $σ$ deviation, unlike most of dark energy models which suffer from an age problem.
