Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

Broadband gate-tunable THz plasmons in graphene heterostructures

Graphene, a unique two-dimensional material of carbon in a honeycomb lattice, has brought remarkable breakthroughs across the domains of electronics, mechanics, and thermal transport, driven by the quasiparticle Dirac fermions obeying a linear dispersion. Here we demonstrate a counter-pumped all-optical difference frequency process to coherently generate and control THz plasmons in atomic layer graphene with an octave tunability and high efficiency. We leverage the inherent surface asymmetry of graphene for a strong second-order nonlinear polarizability chi(2), which together with tight plasmon field confinement, enables a robust difference frequency signal at THz frequencies. The counter-pumped resonant process on graphene uniquely achieves both energy and momentum conservation. Consequently we demonstrate a dual-layer graphene heterostructure that achieves the charge- and gate-tunability of the THz plasmons over an octave, from 9.4 THz to 4.7 THz, bounded only by the pump amplifier optical bandwidth. Theoretical modeling supports our single-volt-level gate tuning and optical-bandwidth-bounded 4.7 THz phase-matching measurements, through the random phase approximation with phonon coupling, saturable absorption, and below the Landau damping, to predict and understand the graphene carrier plasmon physics.

Physical Layer Security in Heterogeneous Networks with Jammer Selection and Full-Duplex Users

In this paper, we enhance physical layer security for downlink heterogeneous networks (HetNets) by using friendly jammers and full-duplex users. The jammers are selected to transmit jamming signal if their interfering power on the scheduled users is below a threshold, meanwhile the scheduled users confound the eavesdroppers using artificial noise by full-duplexing. Using the tools of stochastic geometry, we derive the expressions of connection probability and secrecy probability. In particular, the locations of active jammers are modeled by a modified Poisson hole process (PHP). Determining the jammer selection threshold is further investigated for connection probability maximization subject to the security constraints. A greedy algorithm is proposed to efficiently solve this problem. The accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm are evaluated by numerical simulations.

Une véritable approche $\ell_0$ pour l'apprentissage de dictionnaire

Sparse representation learning has recently gained a great success in signal and image processing, thanks to recent advances in dictionary learning. To this end, the $\ell_0$-norm is often used to control the sparsity level. Nevertheless, optimization problems based on the $\ell_0$-norm are non-convex and NP-hard. For these reasons, relaxation techniques have been attracting much attention of researchers, by priorly targeting approximation solutions (e.g. $\ell_1$-norm, pursuit strategies). On the contrary, this paper considers the exact $\ell_0$-norm optimization problem and proves that it can be solved effectively, despite of its complexity. The proposed method reformulates the problem as a Mixed-Integer Quadratic Program (MIQP) and gets the global optimal solution by applying existing optimization software. Because the main difficulty of this approach is its computational time, two techniques are introduced that improve the computational speed. Finally, our method is applied to image denoising which shows its feasibility and relevance compared to the state-of-the-art.

A Reference Implementation of WECC Composite Load Model in Matlab and GridPACK

The composite load model (CLM) proposed by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) is gaining increasing traction in industry, particularly in North America. At the same time, it has been recognized that further improvements in structure, initialization and aggregation methods are needed to enhance model accuracy. However, the lack of an open-source implementation of the WECC CLM has become a roadblock for many researchers for further improvement. To bridge this gap, this paper presents the first open reference implementation of the WECC CLM. Individual load components and the CLM are first developed and tested in Matlab, then translated to the high performance computing (HPC) based, parallel simulation framework - GridPACK. The main contributions of the paper include: 1) presenting important yet undocumented details of modeling and initializing the CLM, particularly for a parallel simulation frame-work like GridPACK; 2) implementation details of the load components such as the single-phase air conditioner motor; 3) implementing the CLM in a modular and extensible manner. The implementation has been tested at both the component as well as system levels and benchmarked against commercial simulation programs, with satisfactory accuracy.

Exploiting Interference for Secrecy Wireless Information and Power Transfer

Radio-frequency (RF) signals enabled wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) is a cost-effective technique to achieve two-way communications and at the same time provide energy supplies for low-power wireless devices. However, the information transmission in WIPT is vulnerable to the eavesdropping by the energy receivers (ERs). To achieve secrecy communications with information nodes (INs) while satisfying the energy transfer requirement of ERs, an efficient solution is to exploit a dual use of the energy signals also as useful interference or artificial noise (AN) to interfere with the ERs, thus preventing against their potential information eavesdropping. Towards this end, this article provides an overview on the joint design of energy and information signals to achieve energy-efficient and secure WIPT under various practical setups, including simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), wireless powered cooperative relaying and jamming, and wireless powered communication networks (WPCN). We also present some research directions that are worth pursuing in the future.

Diagnosing the kinematics of the tori in active galactic nuclei with the velocity-resolved reverberation mapping of the narrow iron K$α$ line

The properties of the dusty tori in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been investigated in detail, mainly focusing on the geometry and components; however, the kinematics of the torus is still not clear. The narrow iron K$α$ line at 6.4 keV is thought to be produced by the X-ray reflection from the torus. Thus, the velocity-resolved reverberation mapping of it is able to constrain the kinematics of the torus. Such effort is limited by the spectral resolution of current CCD detectors and should be possible with the microcalorimeter on the next generation X-ray satellite. In this paper, we first construct the response functions of the torus under a uniform inflow, a Keplerian rotation, and a uniform outflow. Then the energy-dependent light curve of the narrow iron K$α$ line is simulated according to the performance of the X-ray Integral Field Unit in Athena. Finally, the energy-dependent cross-correlation function is calculated to reveal the kinematic signal. According to our results, one hundred observations with 5 ks exposure of each are sufficient to distinguish the above three velocity fields. Although the real geometry and velocity field of the torus could be more complex than we assumed, the present result proves the feasibility of the velocity-resolved reverberation mapping of the narrow iron K$α$ line. The combination of the dynamics of the torus with those of the broad line region and the host galaxy is instructive for the understanding of the feeding and feedback process of AGNs.

Joint resource allocation in SWIPT-based multi-antenna decode-and-forward relay networks

In this paper, we consider relay-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) for two-hop cooperative transmission, where a half-duplex multi-antenna relay adopts decode-and-forward (DF) relaying strategy for information forwarding. The relay is assumed to be energy-free and needs to harvest energy from the source node. By embedding power splitting (PS) at each relay antenna to coordinate the received energy and information, joint problem of determining PS ratios and power allocation at the multi-antenna relay node is formulated to maximize the end-to-end achievable rate. We show that the multi-antenna relay is equivalent to a virtual single-antenna relay in such a SWIPT system, and the problem is optimally solved with closed-form. To reduce the hardware cost of the PS scheme, we further propose the antenna clustering scheme, where the multiple antennas at the relay are partitioned into two disjoint groups which are exclusively used for information decoding and energy harvesting, respectively. Optimal clustering algorithm is first proposed but with exponential complexity. Then a greedy clustering algorithms is introduced with linear complexity and approaching to the optimal performance. Several valuable insights are provided via theoretical analysis and simulation results.

The Structural Fate of Individual Multicomponent Metal-Oxide Nanoparticles in Polymer Nanoreactors

Multicomponent nanoparticles can be synthesized with either homogeneous or phase-segregated architectures depending on the synthesis conditions and elements incorporated. To understand the parameters that determine their structural fate, multicomponent metal-oxide nanoparticles consisting of combinations of Co, Ni, and Cu were synthesized via scanning probe block copolymer lithography and characterized using correlated electron microscopy. These studies revealed that the miscibility, ratio of the metallic components, and the synthesis temperature determine the crystal structure and architecture of the nanoparticles. A Co-Ni-O system forms a rock salt structure largely due to the miscibility of CoO and NiO, while Cu-Ni-O, which has large miscibility gaps, forms either homogeneous oxides, heterojunctions, or alloys depending on the annealing temperature and composition. Moreover, a higher ordered structure, Co-Ni-Cu-O, was found to follow the behavior of lower ordered systems.

Mechanism of Contact between a Droplet and an Atomically Smooth Substrate

When a droplet gently lands on an atomically smooth substrate, it will most likely contact the underlying surface in about 0.1 s. However, theoretical estimation from fluid mechanics predicts a contact time of 10 to 100 s. What causes this large discrepancy, and how does nature speed up contact by 2 orders of magnitude? To probe this fundamental question, we prepare atomically smooth substrates by either coating a liquid film on glass or using a freshly cleaved mica surface, and visualize the droplet contact dynamics with 30 nm resolution. Interestingly, we discover two distinct speed-up approaches: (1) droplet skidding due to even minute perturbations breaks rotational symmetry and produces early contact at the thinnest gap location, and (2) for the unperturbed situation with rotational symmetry, a previously unnoticed boundary flow around only 0.1 mm/s expedites air drainage by over 1 order of magnitude. Together, these two mechanisms universally explain general contact phenomena on smooth substrates. The fundamental discoveries shed new light on contact and drainage research.

The Realizability Problem with Inertia Conditions

In this paper, we consider the inverse Galois problem with described inertia behavior. For a finite group $G$, one of its subgroups $I$ and a prime integer $p$, we ask whether or not $G$ and $I$ can be realized as the Galois group and the inertia subgroup at $p$ of an extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We first discuss the result when $G$ is an abelian group. Then in the case that $G$ is of odd order, Neukirch showed that there exists such an extension if and only if the given inertia condition is realizable over $\mathbb{Q}_p$, from which we obtain the answer for this case by studying the structure of extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and applying techniques from embedding problems. As a corollary, we give an explicit presentation of the Galois group of the maximal pro-odd extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. When $G=\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ for an odd prime $p$, we relate our realizability problem to modular Galois representations and use elliptic curves to give answers for those subgroups $I$ corresponding to weight 2 modular forms. Finally, we provide an example arising from Grunwald-Wang's counterexample for which the local-global principle of our realizability problem fails.

Power Allocation for Secure SWIPT Systems with Wireless-Powered Cooperative Jamming

This paper considers wireless-powered cooperative jamming (CJ) to secure communication between a transmitter (Tx) and an information receiver (IR), in the presence of an energy receiver (ER) which is termed as a potential eavesdropper. The full-duplex jammer harvests energy from the Tx's information signal and transmits jamming signal at the same time, where the jamming signal not only confounds the ER (potential eavesdropper) but also charges the ER. Our goal is to maximize the secrecy information rate by jointly optimizing the power allocation at the Tx and jammer while maintaining the harvested energy requirement of the ER. The studied problem is non-convex and we propose the optimal solution based on the Lagrange method. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the benchmark schemes.

A Second Order Energy Stable Scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw Equations

We present a second-order-in-time finite difference scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw equations. This numerical method is uniquely solvable and unconditionally energy stable. At each time step, this scheme leads to a system of nonlinear equations that can be efficiently solved by a nonlinear multigrid solver. Owing to the energy stability, we derive an $\ell^2 (0,T; H_h^3)$ stability of the numerical scheme. To overcome the difficulty associated with the convection term $\nabla \cdot (ϕ\boldsymbol{u})$, we perform an $\ell^\infty (0,T; H_h^1)$ error estimate instead of the classical $\ell^\infty (0,T; \ell^2)$ one to obtain the optimal rate convergence analysis. In addition, various numerical simulations are carried out, which demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed numerical scheme.

Interference-Constrained Pricing for D2D Networks

The concept of device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular networks opens up potential benefits for improving system performance but also brings new challenges such as interference management. In this paper, we propose a pricing framework for interference management from the D2D users to the cellular system, where the base station (BS) protects itself (or its serving cellular users) by pricing the crosstier interference caused from the D2D users. A Stackelberg game is formulated to model the interactions between the BS and D2D users. Specifically, the BS sets prices to a maximize its revenue (or any desired utility) subject to an interference temperature constraint. For given prices, the D2D users competitively adapt their power allocation strategies for individual utility maximization. We first analyze the competition among the D2D users by noncooperative game theory and an iterative based distributed power allocation algorithm is proposed. Then, depending on how much network information the BS knows, we develop two optimal algorithms, one for uniform pricing with limited network information and the other for differentiated pricing with global network information. The uniform pricing algorithm can be implemented by a fully distributed manner and requires minimum information exchange between the BS and D2D users, and the differentiated pricing algorithm is partially distributed and requires no iteration between the BS and D2D users. Then a suboptimal differentiated pricing scheme is proposed to reduce complexity and it can be implemented in a fully distributed fashion. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the proposed framework and algorithms.

The Covering Factor of Warm Dust in Weak Emission-Line Active Galactic Nuclei

Weak emission-line active galactic nuclei (WLAGNs) are radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that have nearly featureless optical spectra. We investigate the ultraviolet to mid-infrared spectral energy distributions of 73 WLAGNs (0.4<z<3) and find that most of them are similar to normal AGNs. We also calculate the covering factor of warm dust of these 73 WLAGNs. No significant difference is indicated by a KS test between the covering factor of WLAGNs and normal AGNs in the common range of bolometric luminosity. The implication for several models of WLAGNs is discussed. The super-Eddington accretion is unlikely the dominant reason for the featureless spectrum of a WLAGN. The present results favor the evolution scenario, i.e., WLAGNs are in a special stage of AGNs.

Hybrid Duplex Switching in Heterogeneous Networks

In this paper, a novel hybrid-duplex scheme based on received power is proposed for heterogeneous networks (HetNets). In the proposed scheme, the duplex mode (half- or full-duplex) of each user is switchable according to the received power from its serving base station (BS). The signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and spectral efficiency are analyzed for both downlink and uplink channels by using the tools of \emph{inhomogeneous} Poisson point process. Furthermore, determining power threshold for duplex mode switching is investigated for sum rate maximization, which is formulated as a nonlinear integer programming problem and a greedy algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. The theoretical analysis and the proposed algorithm are evaluated by numerical simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid-duplex scheme outperforms the half-duplex or full-duplex HetNet schemes.

Finding binary active galactic nuclei candidates by the centroid shift in imaging surveys II. Testing the method with SDSS J233635.75-010733.7

In Liu (2015), we propose selecting binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs) candidates using the centroid shift of the images, which is induced by the non-synchronous variations of the two nuclei. In this paper, a known binary AGN (SDSS J233635.75-010733.7) is employed to verify the ability of this method. Using 162 exposures in the $R$ band of \textit{Palomar Transient Factory} (PTF), an excess of dispersion in the positional distribution of the binary AGN is detected, though the two nuclei cannot be resolved in the images of PTF. We also propose a new method to compare the position of the binary AGN in PTF $g$ and $R$ band and find the difference is highly significant even only with 20 exposures. This new method is efficient for two nuclei with different spectral energy distributions, e.g., type I + type II AGN or off-set AGN. Large-scale surveys, e.g., the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, are expected to discover a large sample of binary AGN candidates with these methods.

Energy Efficiency in Multicast Multihop D2D Networks

As the demand of mobile devices (MDs) for data services is explosively increasing, traditional offloading in the cellular networks is facing the contradiction of energy efficiency and quality of service. Device-to-device (D2D) communication is considered as an effective solution. This work investigates a scenario where the MDs have the same demand for common content and they cooperate to deliver it using multicast multihop relaying. We focus on the problem of total power minimization by grouping the MDs in multihop D2D networks, while maintaining the minimum rate requirement of each MD. As the problem is shown to be NP-complete and the optimal solution can not be found efficiently, two greedy algorithms are proposed to solve this problem in polynomial time. Simulation results demonstrate that lots of power can be saved in the content delivery situation using multihop D2D communication, and the proposed algorithms are suitable for different situations with different advantages.
