The absolute values and support projections for a class of operator matrices involving idempotents

Let $λ\in \mathbb{R},$ $μ\in \mathbb{R}$ and $B$ be a linear bounded operator from a Hilbert space $\mathcal{K}$ into another Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}.$ In this paper, we consider the formulas of the absolute value $|Q_{λ,μ}|,$ where $Q_{λ,μ}$ with respect to the decomposition $\mathcal{H}\oplus\mathcal{K}$ have the operator matrix form $Q_{λ,μ}:=\left(\begin{array}{cc}λI&B\\B^*&μI\end{array}\right).$ Then the positive part and the support projection of $Q_{λ,0}$ are obtained. Also, we characterize the symmetry $J$ such that a projection $E$ is the $J$-projection. In particular, the minimal element of the set of all symmetries $J$ with the property $JE\geqslant0$ is described.

Concentration Behavior of Nonlinear Hartree-type Equation with almost Mass Critical Exponent

We study the following nonlinear Hartree-type equation \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u-a(\frac{1}{|x|^γ}\ast |u|^2)u=λu,~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} where $a>0$, $N\geq3$, $γ\in(0,2)$ and $V(x)$ is an external potential. We first study the asymptotic behavior of the ground state of equation for $V(x)\equiv1$, $a=1$ and $λ=0$ as $γ\nearrow2$. Then we consider the case of some trapping potential $V(x)$, and show that all the mass of ground states concentrate at a global minimum point of $V(x)$ as $γ\nearrow2$, which leads to symmetry breaking. Moreover, the concentration rate for maximum points of ground states will be given.

Pixel-Anchor: A Fast Oriented Scene Text Detector with Combined Networks

Recently, semantic segmentation and general object detection frameworks have been widely adopted by scene text detecting tasks. However, both of them alone have obvious shortcomings in practice. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end trainable deep neural network framework, named Pixel-Anchor, which combines semantic segmentation and SSD in one network by feature sharing and anchor-level attention mechanism to detect oriented scene text. To deal with scene text which has large variances in size and aspect ratio, we combine FPN and ASPP operation as our encoder-decoder structure in the semantic segmentation part, and propose a novel Adaptive Predictor Layer in the SSD. Pixel-Anchor detects scene text in a single network forward pass, no complex post-processing other than an efficient fusion Non-Maximum Suppression is involved. We have benchmarked the proposed Pixel-Anchor on the public datasets. Pixel-Anchor outperforms the competing methods in terms of text localization accuracy and run speed, more specifically, on the ICDAR 2015 dataset, the proposed algorithm achieves an F-score of 0.8768 at 10 FPS for 960 x 1728 resolution images.

The minimal and maximal symmetries for $J$-contractive projections

In this paper, we firstly character the structures of symmetries $J$ such that a projection $P$ is $J$-contractive. Then the minimal and maximal elements of the symmetries $J$ with $P^{\ast}JP\leqslant J$(or $JP\geqslant0)$ are given. Moreover, some formulas between $P_{(2I-P-P^{\ast})^{+}}$ $(P_{(2I-P-P^{\ast})^{-}})$ and $P_{(P+P^{\ast})^-}$ $(P_{(P+P^{\ast})^+})$ are established.

12-photon entanglement and scalable scattershot boson sampling with optimal entangled-photon pairs from parametric down-conversion

Entangled photon sources with simultaneously near-unity heralding efficiency and indistinguishability are the fundamental elements for scalable photonic quantum technologies. We design and realize a degenerate entangled-photon source from an ultrafast pulsed laser pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), which show simultaneously ~97% heralding efficiency and ~96% indistinguishability between independent single photons. Such a high-efficiency and frequency-uncorrelated SPDC source allows generation of the first 12-photon genuine entanglement with a state fidelity of 0.572(24). We further demonstrate a blueprint of scalable scattershot boson sampling using 12 SPDC sources and a 12*12-modes interferometer for three-, four-, and five-boson sampling, which yields count rates more than four orders of magnitudes higher than all previous SPDC experiments. Our work immediately enables high-efficiency implementations of multiplexing, scattershot boson sampling, and heralded creation of remotely entangled photons, opening up a promising pathway to scalable photonic quantum technologies.

Barkhausen effect in the first order structural phase transition in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

We report the first observation of the non-magnetic Barkhausen effect in van der Waals layered crystals, specifically, between the Td and 1T' phases in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. Thinning down the MoTe2 crystal from bulk material to about 25nm results in a drastic strengthening of the hysteresis in the phase transition, with the difference in critical temperature increasing from 40K to more than 300K. The Barkhausen effect appears for thin samples and the temperature range of the Barkhausen zone grows approximately linearly with reducing sample thickness, pointing to a surface origin of the phase pinning defects. The distribution of the Barkhausen jumps shows a power law behavior, with its critical exponent α = 1.27, in good agreement with existing scaling theory. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy on MoTe2 crystals of various thicknesses shows results consistent with our transport measurements.

A Galaxy-Scale Fountain of Cold Molecular Gas Pumped by a Black Hole

We present ALMA and MUSE observations of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in Abell 2597, a nearby (z=0.0821) cool core cluster of galaxies. The data map the kinematics of a three billion solar mass filamentary nebula that spans the innermost 30 kpc of the galaxy's core. Its warm ionized and cold molecular components are both cospatial and comoving, consistent with the hypothesis that the optical nebula traces the warm envelopes of many cold molecular clouds that drift in the velocity field of the hot X-ray atmosphere. The clouds are not in dynamical equilibrium, and instead show evidence for inflow toward the central supermassive black hole, outflow along the jets it launches, and uplift by the buoyant hot bubbles those jets inflate. The entire scenario is therefore consistent with a galaxy-spanning "fountain", wherein cold gas clouds drain into the black hole accretion reservoir, powering jets and bubbles that uplift a cooling plume of low-entropy multiphase gas, which may stimulate additional cooling and accretion as part of a self-regulating feedback loop. All velocities are below the escape speed from the galaxy, and so these clouds should rain back toward the galaxy center from which they came, keeping the fountain long-lived. The data are consistent with major predictions of chaotic cold accretion, precipitation, and stimulated feedback models, and may trace processes fundamental to galaxy evolution at effectively all mass scales.

Growth and characterization of HgBa2CaCu2O6+d and HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+d crystals

We report the successful synthesis of single-crystalline cuprate superconductors HgBa$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{8+δ}$. These compounds are well-known for their high optimal superconducting critical temperatures of $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 128 K and 134 K at ambient pressure, respectively, and for their challenging synthesis. Using a conventional quartz-tube encapsulation method and a two-layer encapsulation method that utilizes custom-built high-pressure furnaces, we are able to grow single crystals with linear dimensions up to several millimeters parallel to the CuO$_2$ planes. Extended post-growth anneals are shown to lead to sharp superconducting transitions, indicative of high macroscopic homogeneity. X-ray diffraction and polarized Raman spectroscopy are identified as viable methods to resolve the seemingly unavoidable inter-growth of the two compounds. Our work helps to remove obstacles toward the study of these model cuprate systems with experimental probes that require sizable high-quality crystals.

Preferred magnetic excitations in Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We have used inelastic neutron scattering to determine magnetic excitations in a single-crystal sample of Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The material's two magnetic phases, which differ in their orthorhombic and tetragonal lattice symmetries, share very similar strengths of magnetic interactions as seen from the high-energy excitations. At low energies, excitations polarized along the $c$ axis are suppressed in the tetragonal magnetic phase, in accordance with the associated reorientation of the ordered moments. Although excitations perpendicular to the $c$ axis are still prominent, only the weak $c$-axis response exhibits a spin resonant mode in the superconducting state. Our result suggests that $c$-axis polarized magnetic excitations are important for the formation of the superconductivity, and naturally explains why the critical temperature is suppressed in the tetragonal magnetic phase.

Strain-controlled valley and spin separation in silicene heterojunctions

We adopt the tight-binding mode-matching method to study the strain effect on silicene heterojunctions. It is found that valley- and spin-dependent separation of electrons cannot be achieved by the electric field only. When a strain and an electric field are simultaneously applied to the central scattering region, not only are the electrons of valleys K and K' separated into two distinct transmission lobes in opposite transverse directions, but the up-spin and down-spin electrons will also move in the two opposite transverse directions. Therefore, one can realize an effective modulation of valley- and spin-dependent transport by changing the amplitude and the stretch direction of the strain. The phenomenon of the strain-induced valley and spin deflection can be exploited for silicene-based valleytronics devices.

AGN Feedback and Multi-phase Gas in Giant Elliptical Galaxies

Recent observations have found extended multi-phase gas in a significant fraction of massive elliptical galaxies. We perform high-resolution three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of two idealized elliptical galaxies -- one representing a typical galaxy characterized by initial conditions conducive to the development of thermal instability and the other one less likely to develop thermal instability -- in order to study the development of thermal instability and the formation of multi-phase structures. We analyze the interplay between radiative cooling, momentum-driven AGN feedback, star formation, and stellar feedback from both young and old stars. We find that in one class of elliptical galaxies, the entropy of the hot halo gas rises sharply as a function of radius, and the hot halo is thermally stable and run-away cooling can only happen in the very center of the galaxy. In other class of ellipticals, the hot halo gas has a cooling to free-fall time ratio close to 10, and the non-linear perturbation driven by AGN feedback can cause the hot gas to frequently precipitate into extended multi-phase filaments. Both multi- and single-phase elliptical galaxies experience cooling-driven AGN feedback cycles. Interestingly, AGN feedback maintains the multi- or single-phase nature of the halo but does not turn multi-phase galaxies into single-phase ones or vice versa. Some of the extended cold gas in the multi-phase galaxy also forms young stars. The level of star formation and its spatial distribution are in excellent agreement with {\it Hubble} observations of nearby elliptical galaxies.

New bounds for range closest-pair problems

Given a dataset $S$ of points in $\mathbb{R}^2$, the range closest-pair (RCP) problem aims to preprocess $S$ into a data structure such that when a query range $X$ is specified, the closest-pair in $S \cap X$ can be reported efficiently. The RCP problem can be viewed as a range-search version of the classical closest-pair problem, and finds applications in many areas. Due to its non-decomposability, the RCP problem is much more challenging than many traditional range-search problems. This paper revisits the RCP problem, and proposes new data structures for various query types including quadrants, strips, rectangles, and halfplanes. Both worst-case and average-case analyses (in the sense that the data points are drawn uniformly and independently from the unit square) are applied to these new data structures, which result in new bounds for the RCP problem. Some of the new bounds significantly improve the previous results, while the others are entirely new.

Phase amplification in optical interferometry with weak measurement

Improving the phase resolution of interferometry is crucial for high-precision measurements of various physical quantities. Systematic phase errors dominate the phase uncertainties in most realistic optical interferometers. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a weak measurement scheme to considerably suppress the phase uncertainties by the direct amplification of phase shift in optical interferometry. Given an initial ultra-small phase shift between orthogonal polarization states, we observe the phase amplification effect with a factor of 388. Our weak measurement scheme provides a practical approach to significantly improve the interferometric phase resolution, which is favorable for precision measurement applications.

Large deviations analysis for the $M/H_2/n + M$ queue in the Halfin-Whitt regime

We consider the FCFS $M/H_2/n + M$ queue in the Halfin-Whitt heavy traffic regime. It is known that the normalized sequence of steady-state queue length distributions is tight and converges weakly to a limiting random variable W. However, those works only describe W implicitly as the invariant measure of a complicated diffusion. Although it was proven by Gamarnik and Stolyar that the tail of W is sub-Gaussian, the actual value of $\lim_{x \rightarrow \infty}x^{-2}\log(P(W >x))$ was left open. In subsequent work, Dai and He conjectured an explicit form for this exponent, which was insensitive to the higher moments of the service distribution. We explicitly compute the true large deviations exponent for W when the abandonment rate is less than the minimum service rate, the first such result for non-Markovian queues with abandonments. Interestingly, our results resolve the conjecture of Dai and He in the negative. Our main approach is to extend the stochastic comparison framework of Gamarnik and Goldberg to the setting of abandonments, requiring several novel and non-trivial contributions. Our approach sheds light on several novel ways to think about multi-server queues with abandonments in the Halfin-Whitt regime, which should hold in considerable generality and provide new tools for analyzing these systems.

Protonation induced high-Tc phases in iron-based superconductors evidenced by NMR and magnetization measurements

Chemical substitution during growth is a well-established method to manipulate electronic states of quantum materials, and leads to rich spectra of phase diagrams in cuprate and iron-based superconductors. Here we report a novel and generic strategy to achieve nonvolatile electron doping in series of (i.e. 11 and 122 structures) Fe-based superconductors by ionic liquid gating induced protonation at room temperature. Accumulation of protons in bulk compounds induces superconductivity in the parent compounds, and enhances the Tc largely in some superconducting ones. Furthermore, the existence of proton in the lattice enables the first proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study to probe directly superconductivity. Using FeS as a model system, our NMR study reveals an emergent high-Tc phase with no coherence peak which is hard to measure by NMR with other isotopes. This novel electric-field-induced proton evolution opens up an avenue for manipulation of competing electronic states (e.g. Mott insulators), and may provide an innovative way for a broad perspective of NMR measurements with greatly enhanced detecting resolution.

NMR Evidence of Charge Fluctuations in Multiferroic CuBr2

We report combined magnetic susceptibility, dielectric constant, nuclear quadruple resonance (NQR) and zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on single crystals of multiferroics CuBr$_2$. High quality of the sample is demonstrated by the sharp magnetic and magnetic-driven ferroelectric transition at $T_N=T_C\approx$ 74~K. The zero-field $^{79}$Br and $^{81}$Br NMR are resolved below $T_N$. The spin-lattice relaxation rates reveal charge fluctuations when cooled below 60~K. Evidences of an increase of NMR linewidth, a reduction of dielectric constant, and an increase of magnetic susceptibility are also seen at low temperatures. These data suggest an emergent instability which competes with the spiral magnetic ordering and the ferroelectricity. Candidate mechanisms are discussed based on the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) nature of the magnetic system.

Generating electromagnetic modes with fine tunable orbital angular momentum by planar topological circuits

Metamaterials made of periodic arrangements of electric permittivity and magnetic permeability and arrays of resonators can provide optic properties unexperienced in conventional materials, such as negative refractive index which can be used to achieve superlensing and cloaking. Developing new simpler structures with richer electromagnetic (EM) properties and wider working frequency bands is highly demanded for fast light-based information transfer and information processing. In the present work, we propose theoretically that a honeycomb-structured LC circuit with short-range textures in inductance can generate a topological photonic state accompanied by inversion between p- and d-orbital like EM modes carrying optic orbital angular momenta (OAM). We realize experimentally the topological photonic state in planar microstrips, a sandwich structure of bottom metallic substrate, middle dielectric film and top metallic strips with hexagonal patterns in strip width, in microwave frequency. Measuring accurately the amplitude and phase of EM fields, we demonstrate explicitly that topological interfacial EM waves launched from a linearly polarized dipole source propagate in opposite directions according to the sign of OAM, with the relative weight of p- and d-orbital like EM modes tunable precisely by sweeping the frequency in the topological band gap, which can hardly be achieved in other photonic systems and condensed-matter systems. Achieving the topological photonic state in a simple and easy fabricable structure, the present work uncovers a new direction for generating and manipulating EM modes with rich internal degrees of freedom, which can be exploited for various applications.

Minimax optimal convex methods for Poisson inverse problems under $\ell_q$-ball sparsity

In this paper, we study the minimax rates and provide an implementable convex algorithm for Poisson inverse problems under weak sparsity and physical constraints. In particular we assume the model $y_i \sim \mbox{Poisson}(Ta_i^{\top}f^*)$ for $1 \leq i \leq n$ where $T \in \mathbb{R}_+$ is the intensity, and we impose weak sparsity on $f^* \in \mathbb{R}^p$ by assuming $f^*$ lies in an $\ell_q$-ball when rotated according to an orthonormal basis $D \in \mathbb{R}^{p \times p}$. In addition, since we are modeling real physical systems we also impose positivity and flux-preserving constraints on the matrix $A = [a_1, a_2,...,a_n]^{\top}$ and the function $f^*$. We prove minimax lower bounds for this model which scale as $R_q (\frac{\log p}{T})^{1 - q/2}$ where it is noticeable that the rate depends on the intensity $T$ and not the sample size $n$. We also show that a $\ell_1$-based regularized least-squares estimator achieves this minimax lower bound, provided a suitable restricted eigenvalue condition is satisfied. Finally we prove that provided $n \geq \tilde{K} \log p$ where $\tilde{K} = O(R_q (\frac{\log p}{T})^{- q/2})$ represents an approximate sparsity level, our restricted eigenvalue condition and physical constraints are satisfied for random bounded ensembles. We also provide numerical experiments that validate our mean-squared error bounds. Our results address a number of open issues from prior work on Poisson inverse problems that focuses on strictly sparse models and does not provide guarantees for convex implementable algorithms.
