Trace Monomial Boolean Functions with Large High-Order Nonlinearities

Exhibiting an explicit Boolean function with a large high-order nonlinearity is an important problem in cryptography, coding theory, and computational complexity. We prove lower bounds on the second-order, third-order, and higher-order nonlinearities of some trace monomial Boolean functions. We prove lower bounds on the second-order nonlinearities of functions $\mathrm{tr}_n(x^7)$ and $\mathrm{tr}_n(x^{2^r+3})$ where $n=2r$. Among all trace monomials, our bounds match the best second-order nonlinearity lower bounds by \cite{Car08} and \cite{YT20} for odd and even $n$ respectively. We prove a lower bound on the third-order nonlinearity for functions $\mathrm{tr}_n(x^{15})$, which is the best third-order nonlinearity lower bound. For any $r$, we prove that the $r$-th order nonlinearity of $\mathrm{tr}_n(x^{2^{r+1}-1})$ is at least $2^{n-1}-2^{(1-2^{-r})n+\frac{r}{2^{r-1}}-1}- O(2^{\frac{n}{2}})$. For $r \ll \log_2 n$, this is the best lower bound among all explicit functions.

An Adaptive Spatial-Temporal Local Feature Difference Method for Infrared Small-moving Target Detection

Detecting small moving targets accurately in infrared (IR) image sequences is a significant challenge. To address this problem, we propose a novel method called spatial-temporal local feature difference (STLFD) with adaptive background suppression (ABS). Our approach utilizes filters in the spatial and temporal domains and performs pixel-level ABS on the output to enhance the contrast between the target and the background. The proposed method comprises three steps. First, we obtain three temporal frame images based on the current frame image and extract two feature maps using the designed spatial domain and temporal domain filters. Next, we fuse the information of the spatial domain and temporal domain to produce the spatial-temporal feature maps and suppress noise using our pixel-level ABS module. Finally, we obtain the segmented binary map by applying a threshold. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods for infrared small-moving target detection.

A Survey of Imbalanced Learning on Graphs: Problems, Techniques, and Future Directions

Graphs represent interconnected structures prevalent in a myriad of real-world scenarios. Effective graph analytics, such as graph learning methods, enables users to gain profound insights from graph data, underpinning various tasks including node classification and link prediction. However, these methods often suffer from data imbalance, a common issue in graph data where certain segments possess abundant data while others are scarce, thereby leading to biased learning outcomes. This necessitates the emerging field of imbalanced learning on graphs, which aims to correct these data distribution skews for more accurate and representative learning outcomes. In this survey, we embark on a comprehensive review of the literature on imbalanced learning on graphs. We begin by providing a definitive understanding of the concept and related terminologies, establishing a strong foundational understanding for readers. Following this, we propose two comprehensive taxonomies: (1) the problem taxonomy, which describes the forms of imbalance we consider, the associated tasks, and potential solutions; (2) the technique taxonomy, which details key strategies for addressing these imbalances, and aids readers in their method selection process. Finally, we suggest prospective future directions for both problems and techniques within the sphere of imbalanced learning on graphs, fostering further innovation in this critical area.

Scientific knowledge production of blockchain: A bibliometric and lexicometric review

While recent reviews of blockchain technology have focused on the latest developments in cryptocurrency and their derivative impacts, less attention has been given to analysing their knowledge paths and boundaries based on past research to guide their development. To address this gap, we conducted both a bibliometric study of 2525 articles and a lexicometric study of 123 articles. The bibliometric study provided holistic insights into the evolution and distribution of blockchain research, including influential researchers and countries, discipline composition, knowledge development trends, and emerging frontiers. The lexicometric study identified the boundary concept structure with a quantitative textual approach, extracting the strongest signifying epistemic communities. Our findings indicate that blockchain research draws from four major disciplines, making it a multidisciplinary field. With the increasing maturity and development of technological infrastructure, the application and management of blockchain become increasingly relevant issues. Our analysis suggests that blockchain can be considered more of a boundary object than a disruptive change from knowledge perspectives. Therefore, this paper proposes a comprehensive understanding of the development path and epistemic concepts of blockchain research.

Ferromagnetic half levitation of LK-99-like synthetic samples

We successfully synthesized polycrystalline LK-99-like ceramic samples with a solid-state-sintering method. Powder X-ray diffraction shows that the main contents are $\mathrm{Pb_{10-x}Cu_x(PO_4)_6O}$ and $\mathrm{Cu_2S}$, consistent with recent reports [arXiv:2307.12037; arXiv:2308.01192]. In some small flaky fragments, we successfully observed ``half levitation'' atop a $\mathrm{Nd_2Fe_{14}B}$ magnet. Using magnetization measurements on such small pieces, as well as on a large piece which does not exhibit the half levitation, we show that the samples ubiquitously contain weak yet definitive soft ferromagnetic components. We argue that, together with the pronounced shape anisotropy of the small fragments, the soft ferromagnetism is sufficient to explain the observed half levitation in strong vertical magnetic fields. Our measurements do not indicate the presence of the Meissner effect, nor zero resistance, in our samples, leading us to believe that our samples do not exhibit superconductivity. The precise chemical composition and the physics behind the ferromagnetic component remain outstanding questions to be addressed in future research.

Sharp blow-up result for the intercritical Inhomogeneous NLS equation

In this paper, we consider the intercritical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation. For the radial symmetry initial data, we construct the ring blow-up solutions and obtain blow-up speed. This result implies that the upper bound on the blow-up speed given by Cardoso and Farah [J. Funct. Anal.,281(8) No. 109134, (2021)] is sharp.

On traveling waves and global existence for a nonlinear Schrödinger system with three waves interaction

In this paper, we consider three components system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations related to the Raman amplification in a plasma. By using variational method, a new result on the existence of traveling wave solutions are obtained under the non-mass resonance condition. We also study the new global existence result for oscillating data. Both of our results essentially due to the absence of Galilean symmetry in the system.

Using KCWI to Explore the Chemical Inhomogeneities and Evolution of J1044+0353

J1044+0353 is considered a local analog of the young galaxies that ionized the intergalactic medium at high-redshift due to its low mass, low metallicity, high specific star formation rate, and strong high-ionization emission lines. We use integral field spectroscopy to trace the propagation of the starburst across this small galaxy using Balmer emission- and absorption-line equivalent widths and find a post-starburst population (~ 15 - 20 Myr) roughly one kpc east of the much younger, compact starburst (~ 3 - 4 Myr). Using the direct electron temperature method to map the O/H abundance ratio, we find similar metallicity (1 to 3 sigma) between the starburst and post-starburst regions but with a significant dispersion of about 0.3 dex within the latter. We also map the Doppler shift and width of the strong emission lines. Over scales several times the size of the galaxy, we discover a velocity gradient parallel to the galaxy's minor axis. The steepest gradients (~ 30 $\mathrm{km \ s^{-1} \ kpc^{-1}}$) appear to emanate from the oldest stellar association. We identify the velocity gradient as an outflow viewed edge-on based on the increased line width and skew in a biconical region. We discuss how this outflow and the gas inflow necessary to trigger the starburst affect the chemical evolution of J1044+0353. We conclude that the stellar associations driving the galactic outflow are spatially offset from the youngest association, and a chemical evolution model with a metal-enriched wind requires a more realistic inflow rate than a homogeneous chemical evolution model.

Persistent spin dynamics in magnetically ordered honeycomb cobalt oxides

In the quest to find quantum spin liquids, layered cobalt oxides Na2Co2TeO6 and Na3Co2SbO6 have been proposed as promising candidates for approximating the Kitaev honeycomb model. Yet, their suitability has been thrown into question due to observed long-range magnetic order at low temperatures and indications of easy-plane, rather than Kitaev-type, spin anisotropy. Here we use muon spin relaxation to reveal an unexpected picture: contrary to the anticipated static nature of the long-range order, the systems show prevalent spin dynamics with spatially uneven distribution and varied correlation times. This underlines that the magnetic ground states cannot be solely described by the long-range order, suggesting a significant role of quantum fluctuations. Our findings not only shed new light on the complex physics of these systems but also underscore the need for a refined approach in the search for realizable quantum spin liquids.

Existence of global solutions for the nonlocal derivation nonlinear Schrödinger equation by the inverse scattering transform method

We address the existence of global solutions to the initial value problem for the integrable nonlocal derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation in weighted Sobolev space $H^{2}(\mathbb{R})\cap H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$. The key to prove this result is to establish a bijectivity between potential and reflection coefficient by using the inverse scattering transform method in the form of the Riemann-Hilbert problem.

On the Weight Spectrum Improvement of Pre-transformed Reed-Muller Codes and Polar Codes

Pre-transformation with an upper-triangular matrix (including cyclic redundancy check (CRC), parity-check (PC) and polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes) improves the weight spectrum of Reed-Muller (RM) codes and polar codes significantly. However, a theoretical analysis to quantify the improvement is missing. In this paper, we provide asymptotic analysis on the number of low-weight codewords of the original and pre-transformed RM codes respectively, and prove that pre-transformation significantly reduces low-weight codewords, even in the order sense. For polar codes, we prove that the average number of minimum-weight codewords does not increase after pre-transformation. Both results confirm the advantages of pre-transformation.

Scientific Objectives of the Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) Mission

The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. This paper discusses the perspective of advancing these fields using the HUBS telescope.

Monocular Road Planar Parallax Estimation

Estimating the 3D structure of the drivable surface and surrounding environment is a crucial task for assisted and autonomous driving. It is commonly solved either by using 3D sensors such as LiDAR or directly predicting the depth of points via deep learning. However, the former is expensive, and the latter lacks the use of geometry information for the scene. In this paper, instead of following existing methodologies, we propose Road Planar Parallax Attention Network (RPANet), a new deep neural network for 3D sensing from monocular image sequences based on planar parallax, which takes full advantage of the omnipresent road plane geometry in driving scenes. RPANet takes a pair of images aligned by the homography of the road plane as input and outputs a $γ$ map (the ratio of height to depth) for 3D reconstruction. The $γ$ map has the potential to construct a two-dimensional transformation between two consecutive frames. It implies planar parallax and can be combined with the road plane serving as a reference to estimate the 3D structure by warping the consecutive frames. Furthermore, we introduce a novel cross-attention module to make the network better perceive the displacements caused by planar parallax. To verify the effectiveness of our method, we sample data from the Waymo Open Dataset and construct annotations related to planar parallax. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on the sampled dataset to demonstrate the 3D reconstruction accuracy of our approach in challenging scenarios.

On the Uniqueness of Balanced Complex Orthogonal Design

Complex orthogonal designs (CODs) play a crucial role in the construction of space-time block codes. Their real analog, real orthogonal designs (or equivalently, sum of squares composition formula) have a long history. Adams et al. (2011) introduced the concept of balanced complex orthogonal designs (BCODs) to address practical considerations. BCODs have a constant code rate of $1/2$ and a minimum decoding delay of $2^m$, where $2m$ is the number of columns. Understanding the structure of BCODs helps design space-time block codes, and it is also fascinating in its own right. We prove, when the number of columns is fixed, all (indecomposable) balanced complex orthogonal designs (BCODs) have the same parameters $[2^m, 2m, 2^{m-1}]$, and moreover, they are all equivalent.

Phonon thermal transport shaped by strong spin-phonon scattering in a Kitaev material Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

The recent report of a half-quantized thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$ has sparked a strong debate on whether it is generated by Majorana fermion edge currents or whether other more conventional mechanisms involving magnons or phonons are at its origin. A more direct evidence for Majorana fermions which could be expected to arise from a contribution to the longitudinal heat conductivity $κ_{xx}$ at $T\rightarrow0$ is elusive due to a very complex magnetic field dependence of $κ_{xx}$. Here, we report very low temperature (below 1~K) thermal conductivity ($κ$) of another candidate Kitaev material, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$. The application of a magnetic field along different principal axes of the crystal reveals a strong directional-dependent magnetic-field ($\bf B$) impact on $κ$. We show that no evidence for mobile quasiparticles except phonons can be concluded at any field from 0~T to the field polarized state. In particular, severely scattered phonon transport is observed across the $B-T$ phase diagram, which is attributed to prominent magnetic fluctuations. Cascades of phase transitions are uncovered for all $\bf B$ directions by probing the strength of magnetic fluctuations via a precise record of $κ$($B$). Our results thus rule out recent proposals for itinerant magnetic excitations in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, and emphasise the importance of discriminating true spin liquid transport properties from scattered phonons in candidate materials.

Inactivated COVID-19 Vaccination did not affect In vitro fertilization (IVF) / Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) cycle outcomes

Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 inactivated vaccine administration on the outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles in infertile couples in China. Methods: We collected data from the CYART prospective cohort, which included couples undergoing IVF treatment from January 2021 to September 2022 at Sichuan Jinxin Xinan Women & Children's Hospital. Based on whether they received vaccination before ovarian stimulation, the couples were divided into the vaccination group and the non-vaccination group. We compared the laboratory parameters and pregnancy outcomes between the two groups. Findings: After performing propensity score matching (PSM), the analysis demonstrated similar clinical pregnancy rates, biochemical pregnancy and ongoing pregnancy rates between vaccinated and unvaccinated women. No significant disparities were found in terms of embryo development and laboratory parameters among the groups. Moreover, male vaccination had no impact on patient performance or pregnancy outcomes in assisted reproductive technology treatments. Additionally, there were no significant differences observed in the effects of vaccination on embryo development and pregnancy outcomes among couples undergoing ART. Interpretation: The findings suggest that COVID-19 vaccination did not have a significant effect on patients undergoing IVF/ICSI with fresh embryo transfer. Therefore, it is recommended that couples should receive COVID-19 vaccination as scheduled to help mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Easy-plane multi-$\mathbf{q}$ magnetic ground state of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$

Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ is a potential Kitaev magnet with a monoclinic layered crystal structure. Recent investigations of the $C_3$-symmetric sister compound Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ have uncovered a unique triple-$\mathbf{q}$ magnetic ground state, as opposed to a single-$\mathbf{q}$ (zigzag) one, prompting us to examine the influence of the reduced structural symmetry of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ on its ground state. Neutron diffraction data obtained on a twin-free crystal reveal that the ground state remains a multi-$\mathbf{q}$ state, despite the system's strong in-plane anisotropy. This robustness of multi-$\mathbf{q}$ orders suggests that they are driven by a common mechanism in the honeycomb cobaltates, such as higher-order magnetic interactions. Spin-polarized neutron diffraction results show that the ordered moments are entirely in-plane, with each staggered component orthogonal to the propagating wave vector. The inferred ground state favors a so-called XXZ easy-plane anisotropic starting point for the microscopic model over a Kitaev one, and features unequal ordered moments reduced by strong quantum fluctuations.

ClimateNeRF: Extreme Weather Synthesis in Neural Radiance Field

Physical simulations produce excellent predictions of weather effects. Neural radiance fields produce SOTA scene models. We describe a novel NeRF-editing procedure that can fuse physical simulations with NeRF models of scenes, producing realistic movies of physical phenomena in those scenes. Our application -- Climate NeRF -- allows people to visualize what climate change outcomes will do to them. ClimateNeRF allows us to render realistic weather effects, including smog, snow, and flood. Results can be controlled with physically meaningful variables like water level. Qualitative and quantitative studies show that our simulated results are significantly more realistic than those from SOTA 2D image editing and SOTA 3D NeRF stylization.
