A new AF gravitational instanton

It has long been conjectured that the Euclidean Schwarzschild and Euclidean Kerr instantons are the only non-trivial asymptotically flat (AF) gravitational instantons. In this letter, we show that this conjecture is false by explicitly constructing a new two-parameter AF gravitational instanton with a U(1)xU(1) isometry group, using the inverse-scattering method. It has Euler number χ=3 and Hirzebruch signature τ=1, and its global topology is CP^2 with a circle S^1 removed appropriately. Various other properties of this gravitational instanton are also discussed.

Black holes on gravitational instantons

In this paper, we classify and construct five-dimensional black holes on gravitational instantons in vacuum Einstein gravity, with RxU(1)xU(1) isometry. These black holes have spatial backgrounds which are Ricci-flat gravitational instantons with U(1)xU(1) isometry, and are completely regular space-times outside the event horizon. Most of the known exact five-dimensional vacuum black-hole solutions can be classified within this scheme. Amongst the new space-times presented are static black holes on the Euclidean Kerr and Taub-bolt instantons. We also present a rotating black hole on the Eguchi-Hanson instanton.

The Stabilization of Superconductivity by Magnetic Field in Out-of-Equilibrium Nanowires

A systematic study has been carried out on the previously reported "magnetic-field-induced superconductivity" of Zn nanowires. By varying parameters such as magnetic field orientation and wire length, the results provide evidence that the phenomenon is a nonequilibrium effect associated with the boundary electrodes. They also suggest there are two length scales involved, the superconducting coherence length and quasiparticle relaxation length. As wire lengths approach either of these length scales, the effect weakens. We demonstrate that it is appropriate to consider the effect to be a stabilization of superconductivity, that has been suppressed by an applied current.

Rod-structure classification of gravitational instantons with U(1)xU(1) isometry

The rod-structure formalism has played an important role in the study of black holes in D=4 and 5 dimensions with RxU(1)^{D-3} isometry. In this paper, we apply this formalism to the study of four-dimensional gravitational instantons with U(1)xU(1) isometry, which could serve as spatial backgrounds for five-dimensional black holes. We first introduce a stronger version of the rod structure with the rod directions appropriately normalised, and show how the regularity conditions can be read off from it. Requiring the absence of conical and orbifold singularities will in general impose periodicity conditions on the coordinates, and we illustrate this by considering known gravitational instantons in this class. Some previous results regarding certain gravitational instantons are clarified in the process. Finally, we show how the rod-structure formalism is able to provide a classification of gravitational instantons, and speculate on the existence of possible new gravitational instantons.

Magneto-Stark polaron states in semiconductor quantum wells

We study theoretically the effect of a lateral electric field on the magneto-polaron states in a quantum cascade laser under a quantizing magnetic field. We show that this problem fits the original Fano model of a discrete state coupled to a continuum, present a detailed analysis of magneto-Stark polaron resonances, and finally discuss the strong consequences on the optical characteristics of an operating structure.

Optical phonon scattering and theory of magneto-polarons in a quantum cascade laser in a strong magnetic field

We report a theoretical study of the carrier relaxation in a quantum cascade laser (QCL) subjected to a strong magnetic field. Both the alloy (GaInAs) disorder effects and the Frohlich interaction are taken into account when the electron energy differences are tuned to the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon energy. In the weak electron-phonon coupling regime, a Fermi's golden rule computation of LO phonon scattering rates shows a very fast non-radiative relaxation channel for the alloy broadened Landau levels (LL's). In the strong electron-phonon coupling regime, we use a magneto-polaron formalism and compute the electron survival probabilities in the upper LL's with including increasing numbers of LO phonon modes for a large number of alloy disorder configurations. Our results predict a nonexponential decay of the upper level population once electrons are injected in this state.

Magnetic Field Induced Superconductivity in Out-of-Equilibrium Nanowires

Four-terminal resistance measurements have been carried out on Zn nanowires formed using electron-beam lithography. When driven resistive by current, these wires re-enter the superconducting state upon application of small magnetic fields. The data are qualitatively different from those of previous experiments on superconducting nanowires, which revealed either negative magnetoresistance near T_{c} or magnetic field enhanced critical currents. We suggest that our observations are associated with the damping of phase slip processes by the enhancement of dissipation by the quasiparticle conductance channel resulting from the application of a magnetic field.

A rotating black lens solution in five dimensions

It has recently been shown that a stationary, asymptotically flat vacuum black hole in five space-time dimensions with two commuting axial symmetries must have an event horizon with either a spherical, ring or lens-space topology. In this paper, we study the third possibility, a so-called black lens with L(n,1) horizon topology. Using the inverse scattering method, we construct a black lens solution with the simplest possible rod structure, and possessing a single asymptotic angular momentum. Its properties are then analysed; in particular, it is shown that there must either be a conical singularity or a naked curvature singularity present in the space-time.

Surface modified silicon nanochannel for urea sensing

Silicon nanowires have been surface functionalized with the enzyme urease for biosensor applications to detect and quantify urea concentration. The device is nanofabricated from a silicon on insulator (SOI) wafer with a top down lithography approach. The differential conductance of silicon nanowires can be tuned for optimum performance using the source drain bias voltage, and is sensitive to urea at low concentration. The experimental results show a linear relationship between surface potential change and urea concentration in the range of 0.1 to 0.68 mM. The sensitivity of our devices shows high reproducibility with time and different measurement conditions. The nanowire urea biosensor offers the possibility of high quality, reusable enzyme sensor array integration with silicon based circuits.

Channel-Width Dependent Enhancement in Nanoscale Field Effect Transistor

We report the observation of channel-width dependent enhancement in nanoscale field effect transistors containing lithographically-patterned silicon nanowires as the conduction channel. These devices behave as conventional metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors in reverse source drain bias. Reduction of nanowire width below 200 nm leads to dramatic change in the threshold voltage. Due to increased surface-to-volume ratio, these devices show higher transconductance per unit width at smaller width. Our devices with nanoscale channel width demonstrate extreme sensitivity to surface field profile, and therefore can be used as logic elements in computation and as ultrasensitive sensors of surface-charge in chemical and biological species.

Nanoscale field effect transistor for biomolecular signal amplification

We report amplification of biomolecular recognition signal in lithographically defined silicon nanochannel devices. The devices are configured as field effect transistors (FET) in the reversed source-drain bias region. The measurement of the differential conductance of the nanowire channels in the FET allows sensitive detection of changes in the surface potential due to biomolecular binding. Narrower silicon channels demonstrate higher sensitivity to binding due to increased surface-to-volume ratio. The operation of the device in the negative source-drain region demonstrates signal amplification. The equivalence between protein binding and change in the surface potential is described.

Silicon-based nanochannel glucose sensor

Silicon nanochannel biological field effect transistors have been developed for glucose detection. The device is nanofabricated from a silicon-on-insulator wafer with a top-down approach and surface functionalized with glucose oxidase. The differential conductance of silicon nanowires, tuned with source-drain bias voltage, is demonstrated to be sensitive to the biocatalyzed oxidation of glucose. The glucose biosensor response is linear in the 0.5-8 mM concentration range with 3-5 min response time. This silicon nanochannel-based glucose biosensor technology offers the possibility of high density, high quality glucose biosensor integration with silicon-based circuitry.

Signatures of Random Matrix Theory in the Discrete Energy Spectra of Subnanosize Metallic Clusters

Lead clusters deposited on Si(111) substrates have been studied at low temperatures using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The current-voltage characteristics exhibit current peaks that are irregularly spaced and varied in height. The statistics of the distribution of peak heights and spacings are in agreement with random matrix theory for several clusters. The distributions have also been studied as a function of cluster shape.

Dominant regions in noncrystallographic hyperplane arrangements

For a crystallographic root system, dominant regions in the Catalan hyperplane arrangement are in bijection with antichains in a partial order on the positive roots. For a noncrystallographic root system, the analogous arrangement and regions have importance in the representation theory of an associated graded Hecke algebra. Since there is also an analogous root order, it is natural to hope that a similar bijection can be used to understand these regions. We show that such a bijection does hold for type $H_3$ and for type $I_2(m)$, including arbitrary ratio of root lengths when $m$ is even, but does not hold for type $H_4$. We give a criterion that explains this failure and a list of the 16 antichains in the $H_4$ root order which correspond to empty regions.

Importance of chirality and reduced flexibility of protein side chains: A study with square and tetrahedral lattice models

In simple models side chains are often represented implicitly (e.g., by spin-states) or simplified as one atom. We study side chain effects using square lattice and tetrahedral lattice models, with explicitly side chains of two atoms. We distinguish effects due to chirality and effects due to side chain flexibilities, since residues in proteins are L-residues, and their side chains adopt different rotameric states. Short chains are enumerated exhaustively. For long chains, we sample effectively rare events (eg, compact conformations) and obtain complete pictures of ensemble properties of these models at all compactness region. We find that both chirality and reduced side chain flexibility lower the folding entropy significantly for globally compact conformations, suggesting that they are important properties of residues to ensure fast folding and stable native structure. This corresponds well with our finding that natural amino acid residues have reduced effective flexibility, as evidenced by analysis of rotamer libraries and side chain rotatable bonds. We further develop a method calculating the exact side-chain entropy for a given back bone structure. We show that simple rotamer counting often underestimates side chain entropy significantly, and side chain entropy does not always correlate well with main chain packing. Among compact backbones with maximum side chain entropy, helical structures emerges as the dominating configurations. Our results suggest that side chain entropy may be an important factor contributing to the formation of alpha helices for compact conformations.

Adaptive quantum design of atomic clusters

Adaptive quantum design identifies the best broken-symmetry configurations of atoms and molecules that enable a desired target function response. In this work, numerical optimization is used to design atomic clusters with specified quasiparticle densities of states. The dominant self-assembled building blocks of these engineered quantum systems are found to depend on the symmetry of the target function. For example, particle-hole symmetric spectra can be constructed from a dilute configuration of atomic dimers, whereas more complex structures such as trimers and quadrumers are required for asymmetric target functions. The convergence of the optimization algorithms depends on the shape of the target function, the density of atoms, and constraints due to substrates and boundary conditions. Hybrids of steepest descent methods, simulated annealing, and genetic algorithms are found to be most efficient.

Adaptive design of nano-scale dielectric structures for photonics

Using adaptive algorithms, the design of nano-scale dielectric structures for photonic applications is explored. Widths of dielectric layers in a linear array are adjusted to match target responses of optical transmission as a function of energy. Two complementary approaches are discussed. The first approach uses adaptive local random updates and progressively adjusts individual dielectric layer widths. The second approach is based on global updating functions in which large subgroups of layers are adjusted simultaneously. Both schemes are applied to obtain specific target responses of the transmission function within selected energy windows, such as discontinuous cut-off or power-law decay filters close to a photonic band edge. These adaptive algorithms are found to be effective tools in the custom design of nano-scale photonic dielectric structures.

On the combinatorics of $B \times B$-orbits on group compactifications

It is shown that there is an order isomorphism $ϕ'$ from the poset $V$ of $B\times B$-orbits on the wonderful compactification of a semi-simple adjoint group $G$ with Weyl group $W$ to an interval in reverse Chevalley-Bruhat order on a non-canonically associated Coxeter group $\hat{W}$ (in general neither finite nor affine). Moreover, $ϕ'$ preserves the corresponding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Springer's (partly conjectural) construction of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the analogues of $V$ for general Coxeter groups $W$ is completed by reducing it by a similar order isomorphism to known results involving a ``twisted'' Chevalley-Bruhat order on $\hat{W}$.
